    Thanks for this Michelle! Crating during the day has been a struggle because like you said, they sense when you're there. She's fine in the crate when it's time to sleep but when she's in it and no one's in view she barks murder! Even if you are there too. So, unfortunately, she has won that battle because I've tried training the quiet and it lasts for minutes when we need hours. She's 7 months now so I'm ok keeping her out, but I do want to do make sure I'm putting in that early work to prevent separation anxiety. I'm getting worried about it.

      Try putting a blanket over the crate and some music so she isn't as aware of sounds and motions? Or just keep her in a separate room while resting? She sounds like the anxious kind of puppy Michelle is talking about, and then she needs to be more independent to be a happy dog

    Very good video! I just have no idea how all of this possible and I feel absolutely sick to my stomach thinking about how I can’t do it all. I’m already spending 4-5 hours a day focusing on the puppy and my other two dogs and it’s not enough. I guess I’m
    Not spending that time wisely. Long story but basically the situation in our house and back yard is not great… and a ton of that situation is out of my control. When I’m not immediately engaged with them, I’m worried about the puppy or researching how to fix things. The other person in the house can’t/won’t help/ doesn’t fully understand what I’m dealing with. I’m beyond exhausted, at the absolute edge of burn out, it’s been almost two months and I don’t know how long I can keep going. It’s all my fault. Any suggestions?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  5 місяців тому +1

      It sounds like you have a lot on your plate. One of the things that can help the most is getting the dogs on a good schedule. The puppy needs a lot of sleep, and the older dogs probably snooze a lot during the day (more active in the morning and evening). Use that to your advantage and have them all on a good schedule that allows you some peace and able to get some work done! If you need help with that, our mini course on the schedule would be great for you!

      @@HowToTrainADreamDogThank you very much! The puppy doesnt fully nap much during the day. Even after an hour of exercise/play, attention, food if it’s food time, potty trips, Etc. She even has access to chew toy/toys in the crate that I rotate. I even tried dimming the lights, and calm music. That doesn’t even really help. If there’s anything going on… she has one eye open and wakes right up. She might kind of rest for maybe an hour or so but not really fully zonk out sleep. Sometimes she’s fully awake. I’m always worried about her and it’s exhausting. Haven’t had much support here at home. I can’t relax to even take care of myself. She sleeps through the night though so I’m so grateful for that. She’s slept through the night since the 3rd night. She’s a 15 week old Border Collie. We do a great bedtime routine and our play sessions and ‘quiet time/downtime’ in the crate for what should be nap times are pretty regular times of day too. Been trying so hard.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  5 місяців тому +1

      She might need a crate cover and even putting the crate in a back room where she can't be disturbed. We also suggest you focus heavily on mental activities and don't overstimulate her with too much physical.

I work from home and after watching this video I see I've been doing everything wrong (I'm changing my lifestyle to monitor my puppy-who sometimes goes potty outside but more often goes inside) I'm so exhausted and my tolerance is waning... time to work on these video suggestions and see if things change.....

      I'm in your boat. I'm also single and my goal right now is to not tip toe around puppy so much. Like when she's sleeping I fear having to move to go to the bathroom because I don't want to wake her up! I'm sooooo exhausted. My physical and emotional health has definitely been sacrificed.

      I'm also single and have had my puppy for one and a half months, and things get better! BUT you have to be the boss and take care of yourself to take care of your puppy baby. I recommend strict nap/quiet periods in the crate of two hours after every hour that they are awake from morning until late afternoon. Keep the TV or music on so they get used to sounds while they sleep. It is ok that the puppy wakes up, just ignore the whining, and if they don't settle down after two minutes take them out to potty (no cuddles) and then back in the crate until naptime is over. Spend time with your puppy feeding them, taking them outside and learning them tricks when they are awake, and you will soon see that they fall asleep very fast. I do keep the crate in the same room as me, but she is becoming much more independent already, and now she can even nap on her bed under my desk as I work from home

    • @flowstatenata
      @flowstatenata 3 роки тому

      @@choisant7741 yeah her crate is in my bedroom but I work in the basement. I have another smaller one that's in my car for her travel so I may bring that into the basement and send her in. She does settle. She's actually sleeping under my desk right now and sometimes she'll settle herself on the couch or her blanket at the other end of the room. She's totally fine in her crate when no one's home. I have a monitor on her so I can see she's fine. But, when people are home and she's in a room somewhere, she won't settled and the barking sounds distressful.

    Great subject and it suits us. The issue we face is, the crate works, but a playpen or in the house on a leash get's him CRAZY and chews on everything starts jumping against the play pen and barks like a mad man. Any advice from your side would help us.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  3 роки тому +8

      It sounds like he may need to get rid of some pent up energy before he goes in the pen. Have you taken him on a decompression walk before he goes in the pen? A decompression walk is different from a regular loose leash walk or even a heel walk. The decompression walk is meant to allow our dog to be a dog. This means they can explore, sniff, climb on or over objects such as fallen trees. Decompression walks are done in secluded, quiet locations without the presence of other dogs or people as well as loud noises or traffic. We want our dog to be able to focus on exploring without the interruption of distractions. Decompression walks are done on a 20-30 foot leash, not a regular 4 or 6 feet leash. We do not want the dog to pull us all over the place the entire time but instead, meander and walk around while sniffing and checking things out. Periodically a check-in is required. This means the dog stops and engages with you in some way. This could with eye contact or coming all the way back to you. If your dog is pulling we stop and wait for slack in the lead. Decompression walks should be at least one of the 2 walks you should be taking your dog on per day.

      @@HowToTrainADreamDog thanks for your reply. Yes we used when he was 8 weeks your schedule to start of with a propper schedule and adjusted it now slightly with 2.5 hours time in between the potty breaks (he is 12 weeks now). We often use a 10m lead where he can roam around at our garden and the field behind our house when we play fetch just for security(our feeling) but it's not needed. we give him once he wakes up every 2.5 hours a lead walk, propper play, training or indeed with a 10m lead. If he walks further away then the 10m lead I hide or turn myself away from him and he is next to me in a split second.
      For me it feels indeed that he needs more excersice but when we do a bit more he starts to bite us.
      We are doing some local puppy training but with Covid classes are not allowed and we have now some 1:1 trainings scheduled just to get us on track before it goes really out of control.
      Thanks for your elaborated answer your video's have helped us quite a bit! have a nice day!

    My puppy (11 weeks now, I got her at 8 weeks) sleeps in her crate a dream at night but a few days after getting her, she got her teeth stuck in the bars chewing them and had gotten herself in a funny position and was screaming. Luckily I was in the house so ran down and as I was trying to free her, she managed to free herself but for those 30 seconds she was stuck, she was wriggling so bad I thought she was going to break her little jaw. It was awful. I’m just scared now I don’t leave her in it when I’m out of the house. I leave her in the kitchen but she chews the doors, skirting boards and everything 🙈 does anyone have any suggestions? Has the teeth getting stuck happened to anyone else?
    Thank you for your videos by the way! They’re really helpful as I’m trying to establish a routine whilst being a working, single pup parent!

      Oh that's so scary but it is so great you were home. Were you using a wire crate? You might want to start over with a plastic crate. Most dogs find them more cozy and it's not as easy for a dog to get their mouth stuck. You'll want to start over with crate training to build up a positive association with it.
