  • ➳ I hate to break this to you but your actions aren't perfect and neither are your dogs so give them a break. Today I wanted to talk about being frustrated with your dog and what you can do! I haven't seen a video on this topic yet, and I think it could be really beneficial.
I understand there may be mixed reviews in the comments, so try and stay civil and respect people's decisions. This is just the way that I choose to train MY dog.

Tip #2 is so important! So many people pick out dogs by their looks and don't take into consideration what the actual breed needs. Like Aussies and Huskies for example, Aussies were bred to shepherd they love to run, and corral animals or children and Huskies were bred to mush they love to run, pull and are a pack breed. You can't expect for the majority of Huskies to be okay with staying home all day, in a yard with maybe a toy to play with and you can't expect Aussies to relax on the couch all day and not try to round up the neighbor's kids when you let it out for a potty break. Of course there is always the exception but generally this isn't the case. Meeting the dog's bred needs with help him to be fulfilled and satisfied and in turn make him a much better behaved dog! If that's not something you want then look for a breed that fits your lifestyle and don't forget to gage the individual dog's own personality on top of that.

Thank you so much! This needs to be said. Can I add, if you are getting a puppy don't expect it to be potty trained.

I'm gonna say it, thank you for not shaming people who have hit their dog. We all know it's never appropriate, and the amount of shaming doesn't help. But being told what to do instead, and telling them that they can learn better ways, that's the way to train a human. Shaming them for their behavior only fuels guilt and frustration, which they're already struggling with. It doesn't help them to learn how to properly handle their own frustration and their dog's frustration.

Man i know this so much.... me and my dog started in dogschool for normal obedience training... he is my first dog, so i got a loot of comments about choosing this breed as a first timer. And i train him a ton in my garden on walks, i train the behaviour i want him to react to.
But since he is a ‘corona’ dog, not being allowed to meet other dogs much (since out government said the virus can be on the fur) .. so being in dogschool made him ignore me completely and react to those other dogs SO much.. barks, pulls, doesnt listen... and those moments are frustrating as heck.
I had so many moments, where i cried my eyes out being scared of having a rude dog forever, taking a nap and then getting a snack. Then I just start over with a fresh mind.
Even though he is my first (own) dog, I got him and I committed to him and a life around him. So if he is pulling, barking or whatever, its on me, not on a shelter to bring him to “because he doesnt behave”.

I totally agree. As a kid I was unaware of much dog training so when I got my first dog my dad said smack her on the nose if she bites. So I did. Now that I’m older I no longer do that and I feel so bad for listening. I now am obsessed with learning about dogs and basically always have been from then. Now I’m the one telling my family what they are doing wrong and I couldn’t feel any more proud of myself for that and I feel so much happier for my dogs.

I find it so silly when the euphemism "abuse" is used instead of "mistreat" or "hit", in their various degrees. It's no the same AT ALL to actually abuse your dog when you're angry about something, than to give him a light slap when he is too excited and did something stupid like crossing a street without the command. Yes, it is on us if they haven't learned it, but they learn through various ways and sufficient time, and telling them "it's not ok" to do something is sometimes a matter of life or death. I'd rather slap my dog (nothing stronger than a light touch, obviously, but that I know he gets it) and get the message across than have him splattered on a car. You don't like it? Guess what... me neither.

It's so important to really think about which breed to take. Working dog (sled, herding..) past cannot be bred out in a couple of generations, so they need stimulus with training and walking and sniffing etc. .
There was this massive news on protection dog training and how a civilian dog training center used shock collars and even kicked the dogs. It's horrible to look: the dogs are visibly scared and stressed. They thankfully also interviewed other trainers, who use positive methods with dogs aimed at protection and service, like border protection and showed that it can be done without pain.

great video - I really appreciate your attitude about training, exercise & treats - that's probably one reason why Frankie is such a good boy - love going along the river too

  • @kat200214
    @kat200214 3 роки тому +3

Totally agree: Physical violence is never the answer. Using choke collars, prong collars, e collars are all forms of physical corrections/violence. So are alpha rolls, hanging, hitting, swatting, or kicking. Yelling is never the answer either. Treat your dogs like you treat young children.
Dogs never do anything to deliberately make us angry or sad...they are just dogs. We demand so much of them to fit in to our modern world. We ask them of things that are not natural or instinctual. We ask them to walk a short leash, not to chase other animals, and be alone for 8 hours a day. Dogs were bred to work with humans.
So, it's normal to get frustrated, no one said raising and training a dog was easy. But don't take it out on your dog. Sit back, relax, and re-evaluate the situation. Teach the command in another way. Use management to prevent failure, set your dog up for success. Teach in low distraction environments before asking for cues in high distraction environments. Take breaks, exercise your dog mentally and physically. If they do something you don't want (reactive to other dog, chase a squirrel), don't punish. Re-direct to another behavior (sit, down), or use a lure to distract, and make note to work on something, and use management for next time.
"Corrections" used in training are not only physically dangerous (collapsed trachea, sight issues for example) they are also mentally damaging. They damage your bond with your dog, they cause dogs to be more anxious and possibly aggressive. They suppress reactions and tell your dog they cannot feel emotions, you don't care what they feel. They are constant nagging painful/uncomfortable and scary corrections on them. Mother dogs barely correct their dogs, and even then, dogs know we aren't dogs. And, we know better on how to change behavior through positive methods instead of physical violence. Frustration is normal. Take it in stride. Neither you or your dog is wrong. What is wrong is to take it out on the dog. Thanks for the great video guys! You really hit an important point!

Dog trainers are all so different. Everyone told us we would need to go to this extremely experienced one since our Aussie wasn’t “easy” and we did and spend a lot of money for someone to tell us “ignore him if he does this or that” “spray him with water to stop this behaviour” “put him in a crate when visitors come” “start a dog sport with him”. All that let us to him not getting more secure but more insecure. We went back to our first dog trainer who was like “every dog is different, yours just gets overly excited and if people then get overly excited that just adds on, just create a calm and quiet environment and make sure he has quiet brain excercise don’t hype him up with dog sports even more. And we did that and trusted our instincts and just give him the time to calm down and tell visitors to not touch or interact with him before he is going to lay down calmly. He never was aggressive we always just said overly friendly trying to kiss everyone 😂

My 1 year old is the most frustrating dog I have ever had, and I had one, a wolf hybrid, that had a major dominance problem that was not as frustrating as this Aussie. His mind is always going and he is always trying to be ahead of what I are thinking. I have him in a Canine Good Citizen class, and he is testing soon, but I am not sure he will pass it because he is so distracted, all the time. Never have I had a dog that wears me out in a 1 hour class, because I am constantly trying to keep him focused. My 7 month old is about the opposite. As long as you have treats, he does your bidding. One difference in the 2 from when we got them was my 1 year old we picked him up right when they started to lock things down, so no puppy classes until he was almost 6 months old. Could not find a way for him to meet other dogs and people during those first few months. The 7 month old, went right to puppy classes and then on to obedience. But, the breeder did keep one from the older litter, and hers is a pretty busy distracted Aussie too, so it is probably more the bloodline since the sire in this litter was new, and way outside her normal studs. Anyway, we are busy, busy, busy with Aussies in our house. Just wish the snow would melt so we can get them out more and not lose toys in the snow.

  • @MyAirMyles
    @MyAirMyles 3 роки тому

While distracting your dog from doing something bad with a recall may temporarily stop them doing it you haven't implanted in there head that the action they were taking was an unwanted behavior so they will likely do it again and again, in fact you might be reinforcing them doing it because then they get recalled and a treat. For minor things that's probably fine but for things that could cost the dog their life (running out into the street / raiding the bin etc) you do need to teach your dog the meaning of "no" for their own good and protection. That doesn't mean hit them before people attack me, there are many ways to teach "no" that cause no harm to the dog but it is important for it to be taught and understood. Training should be 95% positive and 5% corrections.
Nice videos, great to see your having so much fun with your dog. The edits are really well done also.

Ya, I get frustrated a lot with my Golden Retriever, normally what I recommend is just doing something they already know, do something else, or change the subject, maybe take a play break, especially when we’re outside, her breed and her personality fits my lifestyle perfectly Wich is why I picked this breed, but she’s super social and sometimes if she sees someone she’ll freak out and try to run towards them, she’s scared almost all our neighbors at least 6 times, but getting frustrated is pointless, the best thing to do is just stop, and try something else, Normally I’ll bring a water bottle full of treats and shake it when she goes crazy, then if she responds and looks at me I give her a treat and redirect her into a sit pretty or a speak (her favorite tricks)

I have a belgian Malinois, mixed with pitbull, german Shepherd, great Dane and greyhound. I really have mental breakdowns with her, i tried everything, redirect her with toys, play outside (only in our backyard because she doesn't have all her shots at this moment and time) its hard because the vet told us how bad parvo is getting and told us to get all 3 shots and wait 1 week before taking her out. I feel so bad because i wanna take her out and i was thinking carriers and strollers, but
    1. Shes getting too big
    2. Shes not the type of dog i can just do that to and i feel bad because i want to see her RUN and have fun.
My family spanks her when she doesn't listen and i tried to make it a positive environment but it seems the dog listens to them more and she sometimes gets mean with me. My family keeps threatening they will get rid of her if i don't get her a trainer and its just so much... With work and them stressing me out is alot. Aside from her not behaving well, she is really sweet and we do love eachother, i love her so much and don't want to give up on her. I know she can be the best dog ever and she can be my best friend, my babygirl. She doesn't have to go away, i am just stuck, even when i hired a trainer. So i am going to do what this video shows again and again because i refuse to give it up

Hello! I have a question, what do you think is better, female or male Aussie? I have been researching for 3 years now about mini Australian Shepherd’s but I have been thinking about getting a female but I heard that they are more independent and mature, but on the other hand males are more affectionate and want more attention? Frankie is adorable by the way! My Mom used to raise Australian shepherd’s but now we don’t anymore (she did this when I was young so I don’t remember them that much) My birthday is coming up so I always wanted a mini Australian shepherd, And I don’t know about the female or males personalities so that’s why I came on here, since you have Frankie I was wondering if you knew? And I’m asking to because I always seen Australian shepherd’s doing agility and so that’s why I’m wondering because when I do get an Aussie I want them to be happy and motivated! My dream is to do agility with an Aussie and be there best friend ever!

I know you're not a "dog trainer" but I honestly do enjoy your videos esp advices on how you train Frankie. My dog is great walking with leash but when there's another person walking by (esp with a dog), my pup goes crazy. Can you do a video on how you taught Frankie leash/walking manners? :D

Awesome video! Can you also do one on how touching and petting works with an Aussie? I see Frankie laid down with you at the end, but also quickly left again. I gather they’re not very cuddly dogs?

    • @mochiyeosang1908

He just lets Frankie do what he wants. Sometimes dogs just arent that big of cuddlers, or are more independent.

i got a german shepherd recently she gets frustrated at me sometimes and i looked up ''what to do when you dog is frustrated'' and this came up, it put things into perspective for me and i will do better for her me raising my voice or pulling back on the leash on walks or being too firm with her isnt the way to go... i will talk gentler and calmer to her and see how she responds because the frustration ''O IM GONNA BITE YOUR LEG N GROWL'' might be cute now but it really wont be a few weeks from now. If anyone has advice let me know, she will be starting puppy training at petsmart soon and graduate through all the classes and courses up to therapy dog lessons as i need her to be a service animal for me.

Literally while I was watching this video my 4 month old puppy peed and pooped on the floor.... this is the first accident hes had in nearly 3 weeks so i was very much so not expecting it. It’s raining outside and he hates the rain so he decided it was better to just go on the floor. He peed literally down the staircase for some reason lol. I got frustrated obviously but ik that he normally doesnt do that so its alright. (He’s also a mini aussie btw)

U spend a lot of time with him - the being apart making heart grow fonder (takes longer to lose patience) works. Time Out DOES WORK (Caesar doesn’t believe in time out for dogs) just in the OPPOSITE DIRECTION. A time out instead of owner lashing out MAY or MAY NOT be understood by the dog BUT IT def WORKS for the OWNER. Giving them time to calm down before it’s too late.

Just this morning... my dog found a pigeon's corpse... then ran away. My dog would not come back, so I got frustrated and go away. She came back but at 2 meters of me and when I tried to get her she ran away... again ! And go get the pigeon AGAIN. I begin to cry and scream. I felt really pitiful at this moment. When I got her, i put the leash on her.I was so angry I walked fast to the car. I didn't know what to do... writing this make me feel better I guess

Hey you’re not alone! Sometimes it’s not even a big thing because we also have things in our lives that are going on and it’s not always just our dog. So when they don’t work with us, it’s frustrating!
Just try to get your dog to do a simple task like sit and it may help you feel better in the situation. Or sometimes I just sit and wait and Frankie comes in because it’s not so rebellious to run away from someone who’s not wanting anything

I have a standard Aussie puppy and she gets tired out really fast but then still has unending energy… when can I take her on longer walks to get her energy out over a longer period of time? She’s almost 5 months old and when I look online it just says “contact your vet” but our vet has been hard to deal with and I’m in a new area as I just moved.
She also has a hard time remembering commands when she’s hyper so I have a hard time calming her down. And she bites at my family members feet, I know she’s probably herding but when I try to work with her on it she just goes back to nipping and going crazy no matter how much time I spend getting her energy out!

I got a puppy 4 days ago and the puppy blues is hitting me hard. I wanted her from the beginning of this year and I want her even now, I'm not thinking about giving her away. It's just hard. She is having accidents, chewing problems, she doesn't usually listens to me. She is really young, only 6 weeks old so I can't teach her to potty outside because she gets scared as I go out with her .
Seeing this video made me realize I need a lot more patience towards her. Honestly I don't really like puppyhood but I'm hoping that it could help me make a good connection with her.

I saw people slapping their dogs in my city. Really beautiful, well-behaved dogs. I thought it's something related to my culture but I guess is a human thing. I'd never do this if I had a dog (one day I will), imagine hitting your child-with a dog is the same; the dog has their own feelings, it's not a toy.
