For VR: Did I just purchase best PC For 2024? I may have made a big mistake!

  • Want VR on your PC from your Quest 2 or Quest 3 (or any headset)? VR, or Virtual Reality on PC in 2024 is amazing. What PC computer should you build (or purchase), and what do you already have? What GPU (a 4090) should you get? What is good enough, and what is great for VR gaming, VR and PC gaming? Should you get an Nvidia 4060, 4070, 4080 or 4090? What is overkill? I've made a decision for my virtual reality experience that might be the right one, or it might go terribly wrong. I'll share all in my videos!

Word on the street is, when the 50's series comes out, seems to be coinciding with a supply/container problem changing the price of all imported graphics cards, a 25% increase in new GPU's all over the world, creating a GUP shortage of stock or ready in land

    • @jollyjulian

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised. The world of GPU pricing is a very volatile and unpredictable one a lot of the time - especially Nvidia, and especially top-of the line ones. We shall see! Thanks for that!

Me being another crazy man who spent a little bit more than that for the same specs (I got 64gb of RAM though) last year, I can tell you that we all feel like that after making the purchase. Some will say you should have waited for the next generation, but you are the only one who knows how much you have held on that upgrade so far, and if you considered now to be the time, then it is.
All I can say is that I am happy for you and excited to follow, not only your comparison videos and gameplays that will happen, but also your reaction to the new hardware's capabilities because since we have pretty much the same specs now, and I had an upgrade from a 2080 as well... Nothing wrong with gently used, for sure, as long as you can test it first, or return it if it doesn't run well. And a 4080 will do great for you, I'm sure! Another option would be to get a used computer now with a 2080ti or something in (much less expensive now), and then upgrade to a 4080 or something later. Just make sure the motherboard and case can hold the 4000 series cards. They are MONSTERS!

A great question, and as amazing as the Apple Vision Pro seems to be, it's no where near the VR experience you will get from a great PC wired or streaming to a VR headset. Not even close. I'm sure it's quite the headset, but it's not made for gaming, and it's no where near powerful enough to do what a PC for VR can do for the same amount of money. Love the question, though!

Those are some sick specs on that PC! If you're going to be using that thing like on the daily, I don't think you really made a mistake going for the top of the line. The only thing I have to say is that I did not have a good experience with my Dell. Thing was so much louder than my current PC even though it was so much weaker. My favorite prebuild I've bought was from MSI, but prebuilts are kind of bit or miss in general: MSI has made some with horrible cases and even shipped them with bad windows installs before. I think it all depends on the model, and I happened to get one of the most reliable models MSI sells luckily. Hoping your Dell will be much better than my old one and knock your socks off! Plus I wouldn't be worried since you have that guarantee (I don't remember mine having that :/ )

If your psychology is anything like mine in that situation then I'd like to make a fun prediction that you will realize that you can use the new machine for a while until the novelty wears off and then return it and wait for the 5000 series and buy that instead. I like to optimize all my purchases from Amazon and I will quickly return items and get something else if during the return period I find an item that is even better. I just admit my mistakes without any shame or guilt and correct later. I once sequentially ordered 4 Dell pc's, cancelling 3 of them until I got one I liked. I then upgraded the inferior cooling and made some other mods and it has served me well ever since. Cheers!

You know, being a PRIME member, I considered just that, due to their incredible return policy. Amazon has made a lot of money on me over the years with that return policy, as more often than not, I don't return. But when it doesn't live up, I do. I almost bought one through them, but then I thought - - - I don't like that I can get it literally in 2 days (great, normally), but I figured that meant it had been sitting in a hot warehouse for who-knows-how-long, and maybe wasn't built as well as HOPEFULLY the Dell one will be, as they claim they are building it right now. Hence why I won't have it till end of next week. We shall see! Thanks for the comment!

If you do a good amount of video editing, it is money very well spent, as it saves a lot of time and frustration. No need to go full 4090 on it, but an upgrade even to a 3000 series will probably make a big difference. Depending on how much ram you have for you CPU as well, of course.

Nope, NOT a mistake! Hi Julian^^ If i had that kinda dough i would have done the same, except for getting me a Bigscreen headset on top. Consider this... You may have bought yourself the private island you were always dreaming about - just cheaper ;) I just got into VR with my Quest 3 (literally a few days ago - after hestitating for several years) and i don't regret that. It just made me hungrier for more. I have only a few years to pension now (I'm turning 61 this month) and i plan to travel after my job...travel a lot...on my PC! Just keep in mind that the Machine you just bought will be "obsolete" in about 6 months. 🤣 So go ahead, have fun and keep us posted, i'm eager to see what's gonna happen. Best regards from Germany! Oh, and you should consider geting a bigger shirt - the top button is stretching^^ Buying your machine from Dell might not be as silly as some people think. I swear I made a comment but i cant find it.... the gist was feel free to drop big bucks on a prebuilt, just not from dell/alienware. They are known to have some bad overheating issues, expensive proprietary parts if you ever need a replacement out of warranty, and iffy warranty support while you have it. I think you hit the nail on the head with pretty much everything you say in this video. You are paying a premium for Dell. You could save yourself something like $1000 and also have a better machine if you built it yourself. People who live and breathe the nuts and bolts of PC will be mystified by someone not choosing to do that.
But you represent what the majority of people face when they think about buying a PC. It's not just the cost in dollars but even more so the deep rabbit hole they see that they'll need to go down which represents a substantial commitment of time and effort.
Or they could just buy a Dell.
What you're paying for is Dell's warranty and support and dealing with the nuts and bolts so you don't have to.
The other option is system integrators, but these options usually ultimately end up with the user having to still dive into the nuts and bolts themselves anyway, having to correct whatever the SI messed up.
As for $4000... it's all about bang per buck. When you're using VR every day for hours, the bang per buck is going to be higher than most anything else in your life you also spend money on. Even for high end stuff. VR has high initial cost but almost zero ongoing costs. So in reality, virtual reality is cheap!

@@simonoregan4744 If you're planning to upgrade then sure.
I just think that the current hardware is close but not quite there to run current sims without too much compromises. And upcoming high res / fov headsets will make things even harder, so a upgrade to a 50 series GPU will become tempting quite soon.
For "normal" VR Games it's of course more than enough for the next few years.
But that's just my personal opinion (also 4080 owner with plans to upgrade 😅)
