I've heard that rock guitarists would ask Roy Clark for lessons, even those already established would ask. Roy Clark isn't my cup of tea but that guy was a tremendous guitarist.

I was friends with Kevin Dubrow of Quiet Riot one night Randy came by Kevin's house and he started playing with one of Kevin's guitars acoustic 12 string he played can't find my way home oh my God that guy played so beautifully I couldn't believe I am sitting here next to One of the greatest musicians ever

Yes. Anything anyone could ever want from a rock and roll lead guitarist was Randy Rhoads, but like 10x more. Not that he wouldn't have become an even better lead rock guitarist but he was actually just opening up to classical guitar in the devoted puritan sense when he died. What music might this man have created. I just know that it would have been beautiful because Randy lived long enough to make that much perfectly clear.

Of all the great musicians tearing it up in my youth, it was Randy Rhoads that made me pick up a guitar. His feel, phrasing, and technique made him my favorite guitarist. Like everyone else, I was gutted when I learned of his death. It shouldn't be possible, but Randy's music still moves me, even after all this time. RIP Mr. Rhoads.
The feeling never goes away. There's never a day I wake up and go, "Okay, this is old and I don't feel like hearing it anymore." NEVER HAPPENS. Because you never tire of perfection. The guy was as close to flawless as one could get technically, tone wise, and damn near just about every aspect else. Totally refined and chiseled masterful sound on a level to me, that was never matched. The guy was obsessed with every minute note and it showed.

well, if you listen to classical music you can hear it's a medeley of classical pieces to fit the sequence of Mr Crowley - but that's just how classical music has always worked - Mr Crowley is just following the tradition of hundreds of years of classical music with new instruments.

For his young age and mastery of classical guitar he was truly a gift from God. His command of the guitar and presence live. He has so much soul in his music, there will never be another like him. Randy may not be the greatest guitarist ever but there is no one better than him either.
The BEST ever. Had such a unique sound that was unmistakably all his own. EVH is boring and EVERY one of his solos sounds the same ! Randy's use of finger tapping was always perfect, unique, and not overdone. Randy is in a class all HIS OWN !
He was not afraid to bring his classical training to the forefront of his music. That, in my opinion, is what brought him to the forefront of the industry so quickly. The ripping soloists of his time, were using alot of the same techniques, but they watered them down with the heavy ripping blues licks.....Randy just show cased it.....very well obviously.

The Entire Tribute album is a Randy Rhoads solo. Even the licks and frills he puts in the typical rhythm bars are spiced up to 11. The album is so fucking good that I actually cannot listen to the studio tracks the same way. All of the songs played on that set are nearly twice as good as the studio album versions, except for maybe Flying High and a few others. Revelation Mother Earth, Mr. Crowley, Paranoid, all of these are just examples of just how powerful Randy makes those songs when not restricted by the Studio element. It's a fucking brutal album and to this day, I consider it one of the ABSOLUTE BEST live albums I've ever heard, ever. I only wish the Mixing was a bit better - I cannot imagine how awesome the sound quality would be if Tribute were recorded today and mixed by the likes of Steven Wilson. HOLY FUCK. One of the things that has stuck with me as a musician is that I had read that Randy strived to make every bar, every repeated sequence in the song to sound slightly different in the last. He felt that each piece needed to keep exploring itself through out the track and never get stale or stagnate. This is why in songs like Over the Mountain, the variety between the verses gets spicier and spicier. Eventually on the ending verse, Randy has completely morphed the rhythmic bars on the verse to something else but yet still similar. He did this by being an absolute master of licks and frills. It was not just musical improvisation, it was purposeful amplification of tonal variety that he wanted. He never wanted each piece to become repetitive at the end. This is where his master class training in classical music and classical guitar came through - the dude was exceptionally good at composition and music theory, understanding when and where he could purposely change keys to keep section fresh with perfectly sequenced scales, sweeps, and even changing the picking rhythm for the riff itself. The end result was some crazy good live performances where the band was playing what they really wanted to play - a far more epic sounding, progressive metal style that to this day, has never been replicated. Randy Rhoads is my hero and will always be. It's so sad that he had such a short life, but he inspired all of us with his humility. He went to any new teacher he could find during tours to see if there was something else he could learn and he also had his own class to teach youngsters how to explore and play. A true humble artisan of music. He was a true brother of metal and music. Rest in Peace, Randy.
and the funny thing is Tribute is probably his worst show, you listen to the countless of bootleg recordings my man was on point every night changing up songs, the studio songs are great, but they pale in comparison to the live versions, some of the solos he put on the songs. Even in that legendary guitar seminar he talks about not being able to remember how the original Crazy Train went because he has changed it so much
Randy got tired of the rock scene, and had already told Ozzy he would be leaving to pursue a classical guitar masters in Europe. This was a little hobby for him, not even his real passion. Let that sink in for a second. Ps. He was innovating the techniques that Zakk Wylde uses now. The pinch harmonics and muted shred runs. Thankful for my late father for introducing me to music. Randy passed away 9 years before I was born and I've just become such a fan of his. By far my favorite guitarist of all time.
I absolutely agree. Randy had a smoothness to his style that Far surpasses any guitar player I have ever heard in my 50 years of listening to and playing music. I don't believe there was a note, scale or chord he didn't know. A true master of the guitar.
He was more than the guitarist. He wrote the music. He's the reason that Blizzard of Ozz and Diary are masterpieces. Ozzy has done nothing special since.
He was gone before I was born but I miss him. I can’t describe it, it’s like losing a friend you never met, my heart still aches when I think of him, it’s the strangest thing. I wish we had all had more years of his greatness but I’m grateful for the time he was here - a true legend, even almost 40 years on. Godspeed RR.
From the piano solo on to the end of that song is pure genius. The slow build up, that monstrous riff, then Randy's solo leading up to the outro. Gives me chills every time and I've heard that song a million times already.

a lot of people don't know who Randy really was. He was ready to get out of rock and roll the lifestyle the drinking and all of the trappings Just to pursue music because he was such a pure soul and love music that much.
What you said about randy wanting to opt out & persue the purity of music to its very molecules & harmonics well maybe there was a reason he left us when he did so he could not only study & perfect his music but become music, be inside it. I'm a firm believer in sound & harmonics, Sonics which we will find out in th future can do stuff that at the moment is unknowable. Th human singing voice is also something not wholly just human either. Shan't say divine or angelic coz it isnt but i think people like randy & others from past ( Mozart, Mahler, etc) were taken from earth to take research & study, experiment & discover music that would probably blow our brains apart at the present moment. They then could send out onto whatever the etheric plane is but their ideas/discoveries r planted there waiting to be plucked retrieved back down to musicians on Earth. Listening to this, I just got shivers up and down my spine, cried in his memory, and then got depressed when i realized that he's not around, nor will there be anyone like him around ever again..
So much emotion in his playing, it's almost unparalleled ... I was 17 when he passed and even now, when listening to his work I wonder what he would have become had he lived...
We were in the fourth row of the Lansing Civic Center in Lansing, Mi. I cannot remember the year but there was a massive snowstorm going on outside and they only played about 10 songs. I think they cut it short for safety reasons. I remember watching his hands from about 20 feet away and just being mesmerized. He left us waaayy too soon!

For his young age and mastery of classical guitar he was truly a gift from God. His command of the guitar and presence live. He has so much soul in his music, there will never be another like him. Randy may not be the greatest guitarist ever but there is no one better than him either.

He was not afraid to bring his classical training to the forefront of his music. That, in my opinion, is what brought him to the forefront of the industry so quickly. The ripping soloists of his time, were using alot of the same techniques, but they watered them down with the heavy ripping blues licks.....Randy just show cased it.....very well obviously.

The Entire Tribute album is a Randy Rhoads solo. Even the licks and frills he puts in the typical rhythm bars are spiced up to 11. The album is so fucking good that I actually cannot listen to the studio tracks the same way. All of the songs played on that set are nearly twice as good as the studio album versions, except for maybe Flying High and a few others. Revelation Mother Earth, Mr. Crowley, Paranoid, all of these are just examples of just how powerful Randy makes those songs when not restricted by the Studio element. It's a fucking brutal album and to this day, I consider it one of the ABSOLUTE BEST live albums I've ever heard, ever. I only wish the Mixing was a bit better - I cannot imagine how awesome the sound quality would be if Tribute were recorded today and mixed by the likes of Steven Wilson. HOLY FUCK.
One of the things that has stuck with me as a musician is that I had read that Randy strived to make every bar, every repeated sequence in the song to sound slightly different in the last. He felt that each piece needed to keep exploring itself through out the track and never get stale or stagnate.
This is why in songs like Over the Mountain, the variety between the verses gets spicier and spicier. Eventually on the ending verse, Randy has completely morphed the rhythmic bars on the verse to something else but yet still similar.
He did this by being an absolute master of licks and frills. It was not just musical improvisation, it was purposeful amplification of tonal variety that he wanted. He never wanted each piece to become repetitive at the end. This is where his master class training in classical music and classical guitar came through - the dude was exceptionally good at composition and music theory, understanding when and where he could purposely change keys to keep section fresh with perfectly sequenced scales, sweeps, and even changing the picking rhythm for the riff itself.
The end result was some crazy good live performances where the band was playing what they really wanted to play - a far more epic sounding, progressive metal style that to this day, has never been replicated. Randy Rhoads is my hero and will always be. It's so sad that he had such a short life, but he inspired all of us with his humility. He went to any new teacher he could find during tours to see if there was something else he could learn and he also had his own class to teach youngsters how to explore and play. A true humble artisan of music.
He was a true brother of metal and music.
Rest in Peace, Randy.
and the funny thing is Tribute is probably his worst show, you listen to the countless of bootleg recordings my man was on point every night changing up songs, the studio songs are great, but they pale in comparison to the live versions, some of the solos he put on the songs. Even in that legendary guitar seminar he talks about not being able to remember how the original Crazy Train went because he has changed it so much
Randy got tired of the rock scene, and had already told Ozzy he would be leaving to pursue a classical guitar masters in Europe.
This was a little hobby for him, not even his real passion. Let that sink in for a second.
Ps. He was innovating the techniques that Zakk Wylde uses now. The pinch harmonics and muted shred runs.
However, his classical influence is undeniable in everything he plays 👌👌

Thankful for my late father for introducing me to music. Randy passed away 9 years before I was born and I've just become such a fan of his. By far my favorite guitarist of all time.

I absolutely agree. Randy had a smoothness to his style that Far surpasses any guitar player I have ever heard in my 50 years of listening to and playing music. I don't believe there was a note, scale or chord he didn't know. A true master of the guitar.

From the piano solo on to the end of that song is pure genius. The slow build up, that monstrous riff, then Randy's solo leading up to the outro. Gives me chills every time and I've heard that song a million times already.

Robert Lynn he was hurt emotionally when Ozzy blacked out an attacked the band. Ozzy loved him a lot but so addicted at the time.
What you said about randy wanting to opt out & persue the purity of music to its very molecules & harmonics well maybe there was a reason he left us when he did so he could not only study & perfect his music but become music, be inside it. I'm a firm believer in sound & harmonics, Sonics which we will find out in th future can do stuff that at the moment is unknowable. Th human singing voice is also something not wholly just human either. Shan't say divine or angelic coz it isnt but i think people like randy & others from past ( Mozart, Mahler, etc) were taken from earth to take research & study, experiment & discover music that would probably blow our brains apart at the present moment. Like I never heard Randy Rhoads before.Way to go Ace Ventura! I heard Eruption and it changed my life. I heard crazy train and a bunch of other solo's from Randy and thought, That's pretty good.Not quite on the level of Van Halen but nice try... Yawn... Mr. Scary from Dokken (George Lynch) is another guitar master that's just as good ,if not better... Even anything from Pantera(Dimebag) also crushes it. Randy was good but come on...Zakk Wylde? also on that level... Even Slash.

We were in the fourth row of the Lansing Civic Center in Lansing, Mi. I cannot remember the year but there was a massive snowstorm going on outside and they only played about 10 songs. I think they cut it short for safety reasons. I remember watching his hands from about 20 feet away and just being mesmerized. He left us waaayy too soon!
