- A man speared, and successfully landed a free-swimming yellowfin tuna in the Dana Point Harbor on Sunday, June 14th. Video submitted by Derek Marso of Valley Farm Market, whose sister shot the video after returning from Catalina Island on the ferry. More at sdfish.com/news...
Disclaimer: Shooting a finfish without being in the water and swimming is illegal. We do not condone illegal activity. This was posted not to celebrate the catch, but to show the unusual event of a yellowfin tuna in the Dana Point Harbor.
4.3K are against fishing but will buy tuna in a can.
4.3k are dummies
the odds of seeing that fish in the harbor, let alone seeing it and having a spear gun handy... 1 in a million.
That guy should buy the Powerball
Key West Harbors are loaded with fish.
@@tee4946 not large fish or tuna for that matter
@@Liyate2 have you not been to key west?
Because I have multiple time and there are always large (depending how picky you want to be) sized fish in the harbor areas.
Same with key largo, which is where I lived.
@@spencerwells1328 not tuna but some massive tarpon
And all the people on the dock had Tuna sandwiches for the rest of the week...
I saw a kid at the dock in the bahamas hit a fish with a rock. Pull it out of the water and walk away with it.
Lmfaooo
Lmao
I caught a trout with my hands once. fish seemed a little retarded though.
@@justincruz8352 😂
Bullshit
I asked a guy in Culebra Island off Puerto Rico if there were big lobsters. The guy literally said if I bring one bag for you you own me a bottle of rum and $10. I said no problem. He ran off the dock and came back with a fricking monster Lob. Chowed it on a grill right in front of the bar! Priceless
Awesome story!
Culebra island was my favorite place ever... paradise
Sounds legit
This is what youtube was intended for
Yes
Yes 100%!
I'm hypocritically outraged as I sit here enjoying my delicious breaded deep fried flounder filet.
For all you do gooders I just want to confirm your suspicions! Yes that tuna he speared was auditioning for the next finding nemo!
you're probably dumb enough to watch that movie....lol
The empty beer bottle falling made me laugh.
commercial fishing is what is decimating fish stocks. Not one guy spearing a tuna.
It all adds up, some of the salmon rivers up north can be decimated by sport fishing alone.
It's easy to go after the guy on the dock spearing a tuna, rather that the floating slaughter houses of the commercial fishery.
Leo, It is an illegal kill, he did nothing special. Why not let the public on the pier and let them do the same thing? An interesting video but if he did it often I would label him a yahoo.
Wrong. Newest studies showing, that sport fishing take as much fish out of the water, like commercial fishing.
not the point,is illegal to spear a fish on the dock that's what we are trying to get you fucking morons to understand
One of the best things I've seen on youtube for about two days .
Its probably a small bluefin that escaped from the tuna pens. If they get out of the pens, they will swim in a circle until they beach themselves.
tuna can be farm raised?
@@The93ssfd Yes Bluefin are being farmed raised in several countries now. I have seen the operation in Mexico and it is massive...
@@TubeBoobforyou oh. i did not know that. thanks for the insight.
It was an albacore.
@@TimothyGGuth Actually I think you're right. Hard to tell from the clip but the pectoral fin does look a bit longer
Dang- I should have released this fish further out
As soon as someone said something about “LEGAL” the video ended lol 😂
It was like watching a cat over a fish tank!
I was waiting for a huge tuna with all that splashing and 3 guys landing it.....End result, a baby tuna lol
Probably an Albacore Tuna, if that's San Diego.
the guy would have been snatched off the pier if it had been even a little bigger
At the end of the day - This fella is eating fresh tuna steaks and you're eating what??? Maccas you fat blobs. Thumbs up bra
SWS fresh tuna full of worm parasites
Well, that was convenient. Dinner is served! 🐟
Haha that guy must be excited as hell. He did not know what to do. He runs towards it, away from it, he pulls, he lets go, goes home, then back again.
I was with a buddy fishing off the jetty by the harbor in Dana Point and he nailed a sailfish on a top water plug back in the 80’s during an ElNino year..
Some pockets of deep water there...
That’s awesome
Spearfishing is a way many people live. I live on Maui, Hawaii and over here a main source of food for lower and medium class people comes from spearfishing. You aren't technically suppose to shoot from shore because it's really hard to tell where something is when you're looking from the top of the water but there is nothing against it. It is just hard to do that's why no one does it.
Beanie Howden In this case spearfishing from the harbor is prohibited by Dana point Harbor rules
www.danapointmarina.com/rules.php
I went to that site, and did a search for "spear" and it returned no results... Way to make yourself look like a moron LOL
its also because its not legal to hunt with a spear gun and if you accidentally shot it in the air, the spear can fly like 200 feet and kill someone. there is no law saying you have to fire it under water, manufactures do that for liablity and legal purposes.
At least get in the water!
È vietato fare pescasub nei porti!
Can we all stop crying about whether or not it's legal or illegal to spear it and focus more on the fact that's there's a fucking tuna in the habor!? Lol, El Niño here we come
El Niño got everything f'd up
+William Davids I think he's taking about how good the fishing was
Amando Sea are you dum of course theres tuna in the harbor. theres even a mermaid spotted in the harbor.
yea but thats something you never see being it was in the florida keys people say it was a sick tuna yummy.
😂😂
Now that’s living! Sucks we have to work
Who needs to go deep sea fishing for tuna when ya can spear one right from the dock!!!!
Wow one in a million chance of having tuna in the harbor here like that. Cool af tho
Super crazy
Tuna come that close to the shores?
Did not know that.
Nice catch.
That's at least 25feet deep there tho. No shallow by any means
They chased in red crabs that year. Very unusual for S. Cal.
I once was tied to a breakwater dock, and thought i saw the dorsal fin of a shark!
Upon closer inspection, it was the nose of a skate. I jumped aboard and grabbed a gaff hook.. with a short wait, it came within reach, and i let 'im have it.
It was then I discovered that skates and rays have the aquatic equivilent to All Wheel Drive. He stuck it in reverse, and the dock i was standing on started to torque! Standing on 1 dock cleat and holding to the other sides dock cleat with my free hand, i finaly wrenched it from the water.
Proud of my teenage self, i measured it (6 1/2 feet tip of the nose to tail tip, 6 feet even accross the wings) andstarted to walk it down the dock to show my fishing buddies....
It never made it there...
Some Koreans saw me comming, and I heard the universal "Nice Catch" sound..." WaAAAHh!! "
Then started the money.. 20 and digging...60... more digging, and A 50 too!??!
. SOLD!!
What is a tuna doing swimming around in that nasty harbor water?
Probably was following some prey fish that went in the dock
They get fed when charters come in and gut fish. How it got there is another story!
*Oops!*
Man I would so love to hear a woman saying "oops" repeatedly, reacting to my every move as I'm doing a high-stress task requiring concentration. Charming habit.
IMHO, that fish is Fukushima Radioactive Tuna and may be easier to see at night when it is glowing! Haha~
Wow I attempted the same thing when I had a large yellowfin free-swimming alongside my sailboat during a passage from Zihuatanejo to Acapulco, Mexico. It didn't work for me, I missed, but it was odd to see Tuna swimming alongside my boat like a porpoise would. I'm sure that's way more likely, however, than seeing a Tuna free-swimming inside a marina in California. That's gotta be a once in a lifetime thing.
I once read amyr Klink saying that when he was crossing the Atlantic by rows, lots of fish would follow him because of the life that grows on the bottom of the hull
Wow never seen one in a harbour like that

That looked more like an albacore with it's long side fin
Yellowfin not albacore, and not yellowtail
@@taylorfranklin6537 The albacore (Thunnus alalunga), known also as the longfin tuna, is a species of tuna of the order Perciformes.
@Ramona Rael Yellowtail isn't even a tuna. Maybe youre thinking yellowfin, which albacore have a longer pectoral fin than like I said
@@taylorfranklin6537 yellowfin and albacore are both a type of tuna. Why do you think it's a yellowfin? I mean it could be, but reason being I say it looks more like albacore is they have a longer pectoral fin and it looked longer like one

@Pinochet's Helicopter ya it could be, it's hard to tell from the video though. Maybe we're all wrong and it's a big eye lol.. I've caught many of both over my life as well and sometimes yellowfin pec fins are really short compared to that one, and other albacore pec fins are about that size.
This is one of those pet fish that comes up to feed at the cleaning station. Just seems wrong. You should definitely give it to me to dispose of it properly. 🤣
Am i the only one who is waiting for a huge tuna to appear? lol
Ok since everyone commenting only fucking knows what they watch on the discovery channel, this is not just a juvenile tuna it's a different (smaller) species of tuna then what you see on television. Not the kind that get up to a bazillion pounds.
+Captain Nathan its a yellowfin. This is definitely on the small side

Is tht a baby blue fin or just a regular size yellow fin 🤔
Looks like an albacore with those long fins to me
Once killed a large salmon with rocks. Can’t beat this.
The anti-climactic "ahhhhhhhhhh" when they fish broke water
Impressive, the yellowfin tuna is among the larger tuna species, commonly reaching weights over 400 lb. Of course babies like this are much smaller. Good though, get them before they can breed so they don't propagate.
The BIG Question should be HOW MUCH FUKASHIMA Radiation does it have in it?

Tuna: Rule number one, you don't load the speargun on land.......damn....
Damn I wish my Marina had Tuna in it...
Is that Dock M/N? I think i see my boat
this is illegal, poor sportmans like and he should get a $20,000 fine.
The fact that fish was in a marina is probably a good indicator that it is very sick. You wouldn't catch me eating it.
Curious if that's legal?
D Eret Nothing illegal about spearing a tuna, even in the marina. no size limits on them and no way he had already caught his limit.
KINGMATSUDA Dana point is a conservation area, but I don't know the exclusions.
D Eret dana point is not a reserve
D Eret the harbor is not included in the Dana Point State Marine Conservation Area. The boundaries include a portion of the outside of the northwest part of the breakwall, but nothing within the harbor or south of the harbor.
SDFish.com even in the conservation area this is allowed. The recreational take of finfish by hook and line or by spearfishing, and spiny lobster and sea urchin is allowed.
Why doesn't anyone sell FRESH tuna sandwiches (not out of a can)?
1hourOfLove good question. I'd mack that

I saw the comment where you MAY use a speargun if you're in the water. Where does it say you MUST be in the water to use a speargun?
Read it carefully, and call the DFW.
Neill Drake I was looking for that section in the regulation book. Also,we should not have to call the DFG .It should be visible in the booklet or online.
Steve Giron I posted it above this somewhere
Steve Giron If I said "Anyone with a fishing license MAY catch fish, it means the same thing as you MUST have a fishing license to catch fish.
It is spoken in a tone to which the user is being given permission to catch fish as long as you have a fishing license.
Do we agree?
So if I said Anyone swimming in the water may use a speargun, it also means You MUST be in the water to use a speargun.
Make sense?
Neill Drake While you're certainly right about this being illegal. Your reply in this case is inaccurate. This is the most important regulation code pertaining to this instance "28.65. GENERAL. Except as provided in this article, fin fish may be taken only on hook and line or by hand." So basically, unless they say you can do something (like they do in 28.90), you cannot catch fish any other way. "MAY" and "MUST" are not at all the same thing, quite the opposite actually.
And I get a ticket for having a hook a quarter inch too wide . Don't hardly seem fair .
What else is swimming around in that harbor I wonder
nothing like an oily Fukushima harbor tuna!!! yum
heck if i had my speargun and i saw a free swimming yellowfin, id shoot it in a HEARTBEAT
if you saw santa you might as well shoot him that wasnt a yellow fin.

to answer all your questions, I work in this harbor at the sport fishing business. and the man was arrested at his home hours later. . you cannot spear fish from the docks.
Glad to hear that. What a chump
Yeah its much better to get a guy taking a 3 foot tuna out of the harbor than the long line commercial fleets. Another win for big business. Arresting a guy for spearfishing a tuna, no wonder Cali sucks.
Maria Edwards actually Cali is awesome and has a bigger economy that 99 % of COUNTRIES! That's why we protect our marine life from idiots like you.
Maria, it's illegal because it is dangerous. Using a speargun near so many boats, power lines, and in such shallow water could've caused a lot of damage.
full of shit lmao....most they can do is write u a ticket and take the speargun...smh spreading false info
if you have a fishing license you can spear tuna but only if you're in the water. This is not a legal way to land a tuna.
