While many of you guys may disagree with the Swartzentruber Amish way of life, I actually found it to be quite refreshing. Their commitment to sustainable living and self-sufficiency is something that I’ve rarely seen outside of indigenous tribes in Africa. I also admire the way that the Swartzentrubers prioritize family, faith, and hard work, giving a strong sense of purpose and fulfillment. Lastly, while WE THINK their lives are extreme, they have no idea that other ways of life exist. So who are we to judge? Would love to hear your thoughts down below if you agree or disagree with the Swartzentruber Amish way of life. Thanks for watching!

I can’t believe I stumbled across this video! I buy eggs, produce, honey etc from Lizzie mom weekly. She is right, the best eggs anywhere! The location of her school is just down the hill from my home, I also, although English, grew up here. Sadly, I remember, as do so many in this community, when her father was killed. My mother, formed a friendship of kindness with her mother & out of a love for God they helped each other. I am so glad to see Lizzie thriving, yet still so connected to this very important piece of the world at whole ❤
Literally HISTORIC documentary. It truly is unheard of to be inside a Schwartzentruber's house. Hard enough to have a conversation longer than a few sentences with your average old order Amish. I truly appreciate watching this documentary. Thank you for showing us an unprecedented look into their way of life.
It brings tears to my eyes when I watch such programs. Big applause for Mom. She raised so many children herself. She kept the house in perfect condition. It's so clean here, everything is renovated, repainted and so tidy. I am absolutely in awe. It was definitely hard at times and there were a lot of tears and sadness. However, the community is a real support. When our modern world collapses, you will still be there and the reconstruction of the world will begin with you. Warm greetings from Wroclaw, Poland.
I hope she knows how lucky she is that her family still talks to her. You can tell her mother is a good person because she's so sweet and down to earth

Her values are incredible. I subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching more of your interesting adventures!
I might have shed a few tears on the interaction with her mom. Having grown up Amish n after leaving am shunned as well and to see her mom accepting her as she is is just beautiful!
My dad had a great fascination with and respect for the Amish, and we went and visited their communities in southern Illinois numerous times. While their way of life is very different, they’re still just people following their faith, and I appreciate you showing their culture and speaking to them like anybody else. Thanks for this video.
Everything in the home is so clean. The woodwork and paint are perfect! Simple, fine craftsmanship! No unnecessary plastic junk, nick knacks, furniture. Just what they need to survive. Much respect! Thank You Drew and Lizzie for a great video!
They don't spend money on what they consider worldly goods like decorations.I have lived around different Amish including Schwartzentrubers and yes most Amish keep their homes spotless.
I lived in a cult from 19-39 yo,& I am 63 yo now…there was good & bad,& so when I left in 2000 I discarded the bad & kept the good…most important of all, I kept my faith in Jesus Christ my Lord & Best Friend since I found Him in 1979❤

Sorry to the family for the loss of their dad. Ive watched many Lizzie videos for approx 2 years . Ive seen Drews videos about 4 years. This video was on my homepage. I was glad to watch and see how Lizzie grew up. Her home is beautiful. Im so happy she can go home. I first learned of the Amish as a kid. My family went to a week onference at Host Farms, Lancaster PA for a few summers. I was always interested to learn about the Amish and Menomonie people.
I live very close to this area. I am so happy that you came here. I have always grown up seeing the Amish and going to their markets and buying their products. It’s a wonderful and peaceful way of life. Thank you for sharing this ❤
This is the Drew Binsky style I fell in love with some years ago! This is raw, talented journalism, amazing editing and storytelling, and most of all, taking risks in conflict areas to tell a powerful story. Keep up the amazing work, Drew! 👏👏👏
She speaks 3 languages, knows how to take care of herself (true independent woman) and knows what is good food. Sounds like to me her upbringing did her a lot of good.
One of the best videos I have seen on YT. Being interested in Mennonites and Amish, coming from a tiny country in the middle of Europe (Slovakia) where noone really heard of these cultures + watching your videos on regular basis = great one ! Love and hugs to the mom and daughter ❤
I first encountered these communities , Amish and Mennonite in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. They have excellent fabulous food. Though they live a very frugal life their food is spectacular and lavish. Most of it is grown on their farms, so fresh and without additives. Lovely wooden furniture too.
The Amish are the most humble and hard working people this world has to offer. Living near Holmes county, I'm so grateful to have lived around them my entire life and be able to share this world with them.
They are such wonderful people. I have family living near Millersburg, Ohio in a country gated community. It's so beautiful there. They used to live outside of Berlin, Ohio. The food is delicious and similar to my Midwest German Russian dishes. My niece's family is Amish and she met my nephew through a internet chatroom. He was in the United States Marine Corps when they met for the first time Her grandparents are the new Amish and are just the sweetest people ever. I adore them tremendously. I went to Ohio this spring for a two week vacation to spend time with my nephew and his family. I'm already, ready for a return trip out there.
Many are, but the mistake I see repeated over and over is placing all Amish into a single box. They are varied, like any other group. If there is a sin, crime, or cruelty, there are Amish people that have committed them, just like any other group of people. There are many admirable qualities to the Amish way of life but is naive to pretend it is idyllic.
The Amish are in a single box when it comes to authority. The leaders meet privately with government officials to protect their religion and anyone who disagrees risks losing all family members for the rest of their lives. It is an injustice that the taxpayer dollars of all involved and especially victims of crime, are not being used to protect both them and their families.
I’m impressed with your coverage of this particular Amish family. You were very positive and respectful about your subjects. I’m very glad that faces were blurred to protect the family. Thank you for this video. ❤
@@lizzieenswellnessI like that you see the positive impact your Amish upbringing had on you. It’s not all good but it shaped you into who you are and it doesn’t help to run from it or pretend it didn’t have some positive impact. Many ex Amish are not like you.
Notice how every single thing in that house is immaculate? The stove, the washer, the water pump... everything looks brand spanking new because they keep everything in perfect working order and cleanliness.
Hi, Dutch here. I heard some 'Nederlandse' words :) Very interesting video, lovely lady and I do have great respect for the Amish way of living. Basic, pure, hard working and grateful. Also they have little to none environmental impact on the planet, its a big win-win 👍👍👍

Incredible video, and very true to Reality.. My Grandfather grew up Amish and left in the 8th grade as well, and would go visit them every couple of years as I was growing up. When I was younger there was one summer I spent up there with my Amish family and it gave me a complete overhaul on how I viewed things and how my time was spent for years to come. This video brought back many of those feelings I got from that summer. Thank you.
This is an incredible video -- not just a travel video, but in addition a time-travel video, a trans-cultural essay, and a comparative philosophy lesson of great depth. Congratulations!

This is nice. I was raised Swiss Amish, and it is considered conservative by Amish standards but not as conservative as Swartzentruber or Nebraska Amish. It's very lucky that she is welcomed back by her family. I don't have that, but I am happy with my decision.
Your Mom is a good woman for wanting to still be your friend! I have seen and read that when an Amish person is shunned it’s game over, don’t let the door hit you in the ass. I hear the gratitude you have for your special relationship with your mother. ❤

Im so happy the Amish went and voted. They understood their way of life was at stake... God bless them! :) Their way of life should be protected at all cost.
This is crazy! I grew up with those Amish and THAT farm! My family is actually married into Lizzie’s family! By the way, it’s Stark County, not Holmes. Great video!!
I love that yuo and Lizzy showed a positive view of this way of life. My daughter is married to an ex Hutterite, and although he knew it was not a life he wanted to live (he ran away at 17 with $20 in his pocket), he has only positive things to say about how he was raised and his life growing up...he wouldn't change it for the world. He came away from that lifestyle with determination, positive values, love and respect for family and an incredible work ethic. -- He fortunately came from a colony that does not shun, so he has a relationship with all of his family. My daughter loves them and can't wait to introduce them to that world.
19 kids? Omg my great grandparents had 15 and I thought that was alot. I like the fact that the older gentleman stated that Amish isn’t for everyone,it’s just a way of life but not the only way of life. Their young people aren’t condemned to it,they have choices.
Yet 80% now choose to stay!!! 30 years ago 60% stayed, somehow they choose Amish more now!!! Even with more Choices!!! Their population doubles every 16 years now!!! Maybe it's because the outside world moved too much towards Satan.. Look at churches these days they many became purely satanic
I'm from South Africa but now living in Maine and I was really happy to find an Amish community living here. I see them out and about with their horse and buggy and buy from their store often. I find them fascinating
Very informative and moving. Your friend was courageous to go back, but then, as she said her roots are part of who she has become. She needed to go back. ❤ Bravo, good doc!!
I just got onto your channel via, this video. My husband's late grandmother, was a school teacher in an old order Amish community in and around Arthur IL. It was her very first teaching job she told me and she worked there for quite a while. She learned many many things from them and then, she told me and I can't thank her enough for that. I go to Arthur about 3 times a year now, (it's about an hour drive south of me) and I specifically go to an Amish grocery store called Beachy's. I buy thier Roll butter (it's so good you could eat it with a spoon) pasta in HUGE bags, candy, gallon jars of honey and most especially the Cheese, BEST AROUND, in my opinion and much much more. This video, really does go into more detail of thier lives, so thank you for taking us along on this extremely informative trip. It was absolutely amazing. ❤❤ Blessings, Laurel 😁
There are very old fashioned conservative Mennonites who are similar to the Amish, who have gone into the jungle of Peru, and far away from any towns. Their home community was in Belize and they left there because their members there were using cellphones and adopting more modern ways.
I suspect there are similar groups in many places. Many Amish in the North Eastern US use “Amish Markets” for extra income, where they make and sell some amazing home-made food.
This was fun as I had found Lizzie on instagram several years ago. It’s so fun watching your prospective as I grew up old order Amish from Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
I often visited Amish communities while I was at school in the U.S. and Canada many years ago, and always found their way of life strangely appealing despite my markedly different cultural background. I myself grew up in an isolated Greek mountain village (with no electricity, plumbing, or any other modern amenities - in fact, the conveniences of this Swartzentruber homestead appear positively decadent compared to those of my poor village home). Yet, this simple rustic life, the hard manual work, the dependence on the land and the seasons, and most of all, the close-knit family bonds and strong sense of community are very attractive because they transport me back to an idyllic childhood and bring back to me all the people whom I dearly loved and long since lost. To those that reared us in the midst of much toil and hardship, it wasn’t easy living, but it was so much more beautiful, natural, and humanly fulfilling compared to our artificial urban lifestyle...after all, this is generally how the vast majority of folk all over the world lived up to just a few generations ago!
One of the cleanest homes I've ever seen.. I admire the simplicity and fortitude of the Amish. I used to do business with an Amish man who drove from Shippshiwanna IN to Chicago Swest. Some of the best food ever! There should be a class ppl can take to learn some of the self reliance and discipline skills..
But these are pretty high Swartzentrubers. The truly most conservative are the Nebraska Amish, not from Nebraska, from Pennsylvania. Their founding bishop was from Nebraska.
Beautiful home. Kicks the crap out of my childhood home. We weren't Amish, we were coal miners, in a small town. Wood / coal stove, outhouse, house half that size, preserves in the basement just like that, our tub was bigger though. Heat water on the stove fill the tub, it was bitch to empty though. My Grandmother / mother baked fantastic breads and pies, my grandmother made her own sauerkraut and mustards, she made a horse radish mustard made your nose flare up twice its size. form the heat The basement in her house had a concrete floor that was divided by a short wall, full of jars of preserves just like that. It was divided in an ingenious way as basements flooded in our town every spring. So one side would fill with water the other was dry. When it reached a certain level we would have to empty the wet into the dry side, and it would drain out from there. Child labor! We did have electricity though.
Growing up in nearby Maryland, we see and encounter the Amish all the time and as long as I’ve known them, they are the warmest, nicest and friendliest people I know. They’re incredibly down to earth and very humble people and Lizzie is the perfect example of this. If you ever get a chance to get to Lancaster or any other Amish areas, remain humble and open and you will have an incredible experience.
Maryland fren! I did some living near Reisterstown for awhile my neighborhood was all Amish it was neat. My only complaint is when the nearby farms had their animals out, soon as you go outside your nose gets a big waft of that "fresh" air lmao.
The only reason I would go to an Amish community is for the purpose of having an Anti-Religion protest. They have blinded you People just like MAGA Christian Nationalists have.
@@Meowmixery loll yes it stinks but that is country air all over not just in amish country . Drive through Kansas there they have vast amounts of that country perfume
@@Meowmixery Haha yes, you will catch a whiff of that smell in the air from time to time but you quickly adjust to it. Also helps getting stuck into those delectable Amish pretzels and pies. Make you forget everything else lol

We hired them to build our barn bc they do such a good job. Appreciate her sharing her upbringing with us & to her mother for allowing you to film. What a woman to raise 19 children. God bless. 🕊
Wow! Great work Drew! I work at the Amish and Mennonite Center in Berlin, Ohio not too far from Lizzie’s family. To answer a question you asked in the video - the Amish population doubles every 17 years. Swartzentruber's have a 95% retention rate.
As a muslim. I have great respect for this community👏🏻 lizzy’s mom is btw such an amazing powerful woman. Loved both storys about lizzy and her mom. Wish them al the best.
Thanks for sharing. What’s most interesting is that you do videos, get people to see it and you’re paid money as you explained to that guy. But you have to go the shops to get your food and stuff, pay electricity and water bills, rent etc etc. And for that guy, he just work the land and animals and it provides for all his needs. The wealth is just him and the land. But for you, your wealth is subjective to others (viewers and UA-cam). Their lifestyle is actually more free and empowering and ours are more constrained and dependent on others.
Though seems like they live quite a lot under fear and control of their church sadly, that isn't exactly freedom even if this type of life close to nature feels lot more freeing otherwise. As long as it's a choice from your heart and not out of fear.
@@teijaflink2226 The way I see it, the church to them is like IRA or the judiciary authorities ie Police etc to us. We live under the same fear, just in different forms. The true sense of freedom is like a wishful word for everybody in my opinion.
An excellent video, thank you very much indeed. I had the pleasure of visiting Amish Country when I was living and working in Columbus, OH in 1987 and remember chatting to an Old Amish about their traditions. We used a mixture of German, Swiss German, Pennsylvania Dutch and English. This brought back fond memories. Greetings from Berlin, Germany.
I really enjoyed this. It's respectful towards the Amrish and teaching us English about their community. They live peacefully with themselves and outter community. We could all learn something from them
They live peacefully with the outer community? Cut the BS. Send a member of one of the many many many many groups that Christians oppose to one of these communities and see how much respect they get from the Amish. Christians proved a long time ago that there is no coexisting with them.
@@daisymae3258 Okay let's look at all the groups Christians oppose: Atheists, People of other Religions, LGBTQ people, Feminists, Sex Workers, Vegans, People that don't want kids, Interracial Couples, People that drive electric cars, etc. Let's see how respectful the Amish would be if we sent somebody like that there for a visit.
Super interesting and emotional. Especially the part where Lizzie was in her old room. I could feel it through the screen. Thanks for showing this community to the world. Greetings from Germany.
Wow, this is amazing. Thanks so much! Love your videos, all the best from Norway :) A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to visit a friend in the US and we drove through Ohio, met a lot of friendly Amish people. Really unique to see it from the inside, from your view!
Thanks for making and posting this video; I loved it! I really enjoyed seeing the inside of the most conservative Amish home, as well as, the information that she provided. My grandmother used to shop at the Amish stores in Lancaster, PA.. for both food and furniture. We drove through Amish country to get to her home. I have often wanted to stay at an Amish home and live their lifestyle; to live more self-sufficiently and to be a part of a community that takes care of each other.
Very interesting and growing up Mennonite, so many memories came back. The outhouse with newspaper or catalogues...no toilet paper, Saturday baths...youngest to oldest using the same water, we had cold running water and electricity, church on Sunday....men on one side, women on the other, Mom always canned meat, vegetables and fruits. I really enjoyed this video.
I could live this way. I love to can things. I make butter and cheese. I see the meat. Looks like what I can here in NC. I would enjoy learning different and new things to can and cook. I really enjoyed this. I would love to visit. Thank you so much, Kelly.
They can not live as they want. They have to toe the line and live to very strict rules. All cults have both good and bad aspects about them. The Amish probably being the most charming. 😩

Sadly, it didn’t surprise me. Those sorts of questions have only been exploding in number nowadays. Regarding almost any & everything. Saddening, too, of late to see the younger ones ( like him ) gobsmacked even with a variety of fresh, home prepared foods ( the jam, home baked bread, etc. ) . V e r y grateful that I was n o t born in, say, the 1990s..
That Amish house was spotless! I was without electricity for 20 hours last week, and felt my whole world ending, sitting there in the dark eating my cold can of Chef Boyardee, bored out of my skull, and hot with no air conditioning. Watching this, I need to learn something from these people!
6 years ago I moved to a community that is visited annually by hurricanes and floods. Whether we get flooded or not, we lose power & water for days at the hottest time of the year . Also no Wi-Fi - all the niceties of civilization are gone. It does show you a side of yourself that remains hidden while those comforts are seamlessly provided.
You will be one of the first ones to fail at life when the NWO pulls the plug on our power grid! Start preparing and get used to doing without or YOU are in big trouble!
Get puzzle boxes. I like large puzzles. No less than 5000 pieces. Have boxes of tissues around? Keep the tabs for lil fans. Have a yard that retains water about 1-3 feet down? Congrats, you have a natural refrigerator. Read books, write letters. :)
They could learn from us too, as in humility, I mean, getting ousted like that for having a pin on the wrong way and a church that is that cold, ignorant and callus is truly ridiculous and dare I say disgusting. Just as people from like a hundred years from now will look upon us with our petty squabbles, belting so much hot air out of our mouths further adding to global warming ha ha, the extreme levels of food and other waste including unnecessary pollution and sufferings caused by laziness, greed, and, well, callousness as well as being more emotionally stunted due to the extreme fast paced life that many have in the developed world, especially with the way the economy is today, and yes, money is the cause of most of the worlds problems today. If we could figure out how to make everything vegan and still be just as if not more delicious nutritious and affordable as the non vegan items, that one thing would solve over half of the world eco problems, og that, and the fact that paper can be made from leafs which would be huge as well if done of a global scale. You have seedballs and all kinds of great innovations to change the world that are available today. Then you have got stubbornness, divorce laws and certain other laws, as well as these things called money and wars, so do not be so hard on yourself. If the Amish were forced to live like caveman or perhaps some point after that timeline, possibly as Egyptian slaves, they would probably be having troubles with that too. Progress is progress, it mainly depends on what stage you grow up with and the environments within said stages of your life. As for the electricity thing, I would recommend slowing down and just taking it all in like the Amish.
I am not Amish but was raised very similar, including cutting up newspaper for toilet paper, and having bath once a week on Saturdays. We were Russian Refugee family from North west China.

While their way of life is very different, they’re still just people following their faith, and I appreciate you showing their culture and speaking to them like anybody else. Thanks for this video.

Their homes are cleaner than most homes.

I first encountered these communities , Amish and Mennonite in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. They have excellent fabulous food.
Then you don't really know the Amish In Holmescounty. It's all insest and kept secret.
You can see these men working hard on the farm, not sitting on the a$$ like the men today do long absolute jack. My respect for their work ethic🫡

Hello I'm working on a documentary about neighbor disputes and was curious if I talk to you about the Amish town you lived at.
Is it Wilmont ? I grew up in Massillon
A lot of fun between the sheets.

Just passed through the Amish Town in 896 North to Lancaster PA .
It was beautiful. I hope US will have more Amish Towns and always be this way. ❤
I'm watching from Brazil, it's amazing know more about new cultures! Congrats for video.
Search for Amish barn raisin, especially for one where a barn burned down and is being rebuilt - it’s amazing

Greetings from Berlin, Germany.

They live peacefully with the outer community? Cut the BS. Send a member of one of the many many many many groups that Christians oppose to one of these communities and see how much respect they get from the Amish. Christians proved a long time ago that there is no coexisting with them.
@@ethandollarhide7943what groups are you suggesting???

I have often wanted to stay at an Amish home and live their lifestyle; to live more self-sufficiently and to be a part of a community that takes care of each other.
Very interesting and growing up Mennonite, so many memories came back. this was beautiful. This captures the meaning of "America, the land of the free" because you can live as you want.
They can not live as they want. They have to toe the line and live to very strict rules. All cults have both good and bad aspects about them. The Amish probably being the most charming. 😩

The "bored out of my skull..." got me 🤣🤣🤣🤣
They could learn from us too, as in humility, I mean, getting ousted like that for having a pin on the wrong way and a church that is that cold, ignorant and callus is truly ridiculous and dare I say disgusting.
