How would this work with the true FPS series?
The true FPS series doesn't use live retarget, it involves creating a new AnimBP from scratch so that it can be customized, but in 5.3 the retargeter should be set up as it is in this video...

@@MizzoFrizzo actually if he converts the third person character to be his FPS character after setting up his fps modes, then i dont see why he couldnt experiment with this . But like you said its still experimental software for unreal {meta human}

if you will do a metahuman to vr character then you are a god :D just saying 😅I found ways to adapt metahumans to the character you explanation is prob the best out there and I found how to do manequin to vr char full body but cant find how to do so with a metahuman. Great work tough thanks a lot !

Hey! Great tutorial, I have a quick question tho, when i got to the IK Retargeter called RTG_metahuman, the way it looks on the engine is not the same as it does to you. So when i open it, there's no skeletal mesh, nothing, just an empty viewport, and literally everything else is empty, no bone names, etc. Do you know why it looks like that?? Could it be because I'm using a female metahuman?
Edit: Also the animation bp shows just the pants of the metahuman, not the whole metahuman, could that also be part of the issue?? I've imported the metahuman twice already thinking maybe it didnt import as it should, but it's still the same

The hair won’t appear and I can’t use the W and S keys when I press play so I def did something wrong and idk what it was
Followed the tuto to the letter on 5.3.2. Metahuman moves, but legs and arms don't. It's basicly stuck in idle animation while it moves around. Also, there was one option missing in my version, so I wasn't able to tick that 1 option, can't remember which one. It's crazy how Unreal changes every little thing with every update, it sucks using UE5 as a beginner.

Any advice on metahumans that use the short body? I can't stand having t-rex arms. I've tried moving the bones around and it just made it worse.
Sorry I haven't tried to retarget onto a short metahuman. 5.4 is coming out with super easy retargeting, so that should end your woes! 🫶
do you know how demanding this would be to use in an open world video game? let’s say only the main character would be a metahuman.. would the hair alone be too much for the average pc?
Yes, metahumans are very demanding. You could use a metahuman on a lowered LOD and replace the grooms with more performant alternatives...
I'm having trouble around 4:20 because my character is short and under weight so it just doesn't line up how would I fix this
Go into the retargeter asset and down in the Chain Mapping window select the left arm and change Blend To Source to 0, and do the same for the right arm. Hope this helps. :)
Quick question, does having the mannequin mesh retargeting the metahuman affects performance on your game?
I would say so, yes.

However, when I finish my game preview I get the following error, so far I have not been able to fix it.

Error code from message log:
Blueprint Runtime Error: "Accessed None trying to read property SkeletalMeshComponent". Node: Branch Graph: EnableMasterPose Function: Enable Master Pose Blueprint: BP_Playable_Antonio
I would maybe start over and try again before asking for help. You likely missed something...

@@lasse5597 I guarantee you that using this method in 5.3 works and produces no errors. It's what I do.
I think i did something wrong because when the charter jumps his fingers just like distort into his hands or something im using BP_Emory
Go into the retargeter, change the source preview mesh to SKM_Quinn, then edit the pose and make sure the upper and lower arm bones line up nicely. Save the retargeter then hit play and let me know if this helped!
Got as far as trying to change the animation but my body preview is a female and noticeably shorter than the mannequin. No idea how to progress from here.
Change what animation? Are you talking about posing the character in the retargeter?
@MizzoFrizzo yeah where you place your meta preview with the mannequin. If you look at your video before you click your preview yours looks noticeably shorter until you change to the medium tall or whatnot. Mine stays short.
@jamesc8433 that's fine, just match the angle of the arms and continue.
if your problem looks like your metahuman has "chicken wings", then go to the RTG_MannyToMeta (IK Retargeter) you created. On the two hands are yellow dices. Click on them and set Scale Vertical from 1,0 to 0,9. This should fix "chicken wing syndrome". I hope it helps

When i click enable "use live retarget mode" in metahuman BP, my character starts walking (already in the viewport..) & this is the only animation that is on, non stop in the game, i.e. third person manequinn walks in place or forward backward, never stops & there are no jump animations either hmhm
this is in UE5.3.2
I'll look into this for you next time I'm at my desk, but for now I recommend going beyond live retarget and instead implementing your own AnimBP for your metahuman. I have a video showing you how:

I'm not using 5.4 until it's actually released. In any case, creating a retargeter takes 2mins and works very well. You must have messed something up! 🫶

I'm at 3:19 and for some reason cant change the Source IKRig Asset. It appears greyed out.

My Metahuman doesn't retarget at 6:20, it still has no animations, I messed with the third person blue print a lot, I added a bunch of code before this video but still based off of third person bp
If you're not working with a fresh template then you're going to have to work out any differences. This tutorial is a standalone video.
