Metahuman As A Playable Character Beginner Tutorial | Unreal Engine 5.3 & 5.2

- Have you ever wondered what it would be like to play a game with characters that looked exactly like real people? A hyper-realistic videogame character in other words. Well, the tech is here! With Unreal Engine's Metahumans paired with lumen and nanite, you can create realistic and immersive game characters that are indistinguishable from real people. On top of this amazing feat, these characters can not only be lone wanderers in one's game, they can by played as the main character in a third person RPG or shooter, adventure game or whatever else your heart desires.
In this tutorial, I will show you how to implement these Metahumans in your Unreal Engine 5.2 and Unreal Engine 5.3 projects. I will walk you step by step through the process of first downloading your created metahuman all the way through basic live retargeting and by the end, you will be able to use your metahuman with the third person template seamlessly.
This video was created because a lot of you guys had requested a video where I explain step by step how I added a metahuman as my third person character in the Electric Dreams PCG Demo so this video does exactly that. Even though I'm doing it in a new project, the same steps are to be followed even if the project isn't empty.

I'm very glad it helped. I too, when trying to get this to work, started off by following a few tutorials, but none worked so I understand how frustrating it must have been. When I finally came across an answer, I made a video so no others would need to face that pain.

For top down characters, there doesn't seem to be anything in the event graph to copy/paste. Does this mean this isn't possible for top down characters?

Hey man thanks for doing this tutorial big life saver! I’m just starting to explore unreal engine and getting into it. I’m completely new to all of this. I watched your Electric Dreams PCG tutorial. I was wondering can you add other assets from Epic Market Place and add to it? I wanted to do a forest/ jungle with a burnt part to it. I think I wanna try to do a survival type game.
I'm really glad you found my tutorials helpful. About your question: Yes, it is possible to add Marketplace assets, plugins, etc. to any supported project in Unreal Engine (including the Electric Dreams Demo). There may be some problems when adding assets that don't work with the current engine version, but most of them can be fixed! I really hope this helps. 😀

Do you have any idea on why the animations look weird in short characters, the arms are a little bit bent
You may need to use a different Target Preview Mesh that applies to short characters.

Any idea why unreal just freezes when I click to open my meta human blueprint it doesn’t crash it just freezes

Do you know how to create metahumans from photos? Like doing a Metahuman from a famous actor for example?
Thank you so much! About your question, you'd be able to achieve something close enough if you have pictures from multiple sides and compile each picture into a video which can then be used with Metahuman Animator to create a metahuman identity.

Very useful and easy to follow tutorial thank you. But maybe you should also explain why are you doing what are you doing. For example I have no idea why we need to do all the stuff after 8th minute.
Thank you for watching and for the feedback. I'll take that into careful consideration. 🙏 Also, about why we're doing everything past the 8 minute mark is--simply put, to fix the animations since the metahumans and mannequins don't have the same skeleton.
I like your style, when I tried to switch back to third person map all I could see was black?
Have you made sure that the lights still exist in your scene? If not, the fastest way to set up lighting is through the Environment Light Mixer. Also, it may be helpful to see what lighting method you are using (Lumen Dynamic Global Illumination, Ray/Path Tracing, Baked Lighting, etc.).
Works with movement but none of my other Anims are playing
After doing everything, my character is in t-pose, no walking or running animations.. Did I do anything wrong?
If you rewatch the video, you'll probably notice there are small details in there. Some must be enabled or added in. Especially when dealing with the live retarget. Hope you get the problem sorted out 😀

You need to click on the LODSync component, otherwise the option won't show up.
