What would have been interesting is to connect a prior NTFS formatted hard disk that had media content connected to the Max & then use 3rd party apps to see if they could read that NTFS hard disk.
Does this external storage when configured as INTERNAL work the same way as the older FireTV 2nd Gen (metal box) that has a SDcard slot for added storage? I have the 2nd Gen and noticed the SDcard slot only made a slight difference when transferring APPs to it. I am hoping the FireTV Max when the external storage is configured as INTERNAL storage is much more effective and freeing up space on the internal storage. Would a USB SDcard be faster than a USB 3.0 flash drive.
Some ISP's have TV apps which support DVR functions on an Android box. This method might allow for doing the same with a Firestick but beware of over heating risk.
I bought 2 fire stick max's. I added the usb adapter type like your adapter 2 (buy the way the link does not go to the adapter, thought about buying the one you had listed thinking might be my adapter) then added a usb stk. After 25-45 mins or so the screen turns to snow. The only way to fix it is to unplug the stick to restart but it just happens again. I tried changing usb stick type, same problem. Thinking it was a bad max stk, I ordered another one to return the first. Same problem. Not sure what is going on. I tried a small san disk 16gb stick, then 64 and 128 which have worked with regular 4 Kfirestick. I also tried putting the stick with usb over a fan but still happening after running for awhile the screen turns to snow and I need to unplug to restart to clear it. Then it happens again. Any ideas? I also have the adapter plugged into a hdmi switcher. I have tivo 4k streamer set up the same exact way running on the 4k hdmi switcher and it runs without a hitch. No snow screen with any other devices. The switcher handles 4k 60 htz etc. Oh I am also using the hdmi fire stick extender coming from the switcher because there is not enough room to plug in the max stick in the switcher without it. The only differen between the tivo and 4k max. I have other media devices on the switcher to and no probs. Do you know what might be causing this? I really love your channel. Very informative. I have tried everything and CANNOT get my Firestick to recognize the USB drive!! Heeeeelp! I had the standard Firestick 4K then found out it doesn't accept external USB so I just bought a 4K Max which does. Here is my setup...4K Max, OTG cable, a 64GB Samsung USB 3.0 drive AND I am using the Amazon Ethernet adapter for hard wire plug in. Power is plugged into a surge protector then goes to the Ethernet adapter first, OTG plugged into Ethernet adapter on one end then male side of OTG into the Firestick. Firestick software up to date, and it STILL will not recognize the USB drive. I was under the impression the Firestick would format the drive to FAT32 so I shouldn't have to format it first but could I be wrong? I already tried to format it to FAT32 on my PC and FAT32 was not an option
Try an older usb 2 flash drive. Use the DIskpart method to prepare it. 1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and type these commands. 2. At the command prompt, enter diskpart. 3. Enter list disk. 4. Enter select disk ( flash drive letter). 5. Enter clean. 6. Enter create partition primary. 7. Enter select partition 1. 8. Enter active. 9. Enter format fs=fat32. 10. Enter exit.

every app ive installed via the amazon play store goes to the firestick drive, and no option to change it, all those identical apps i was able to install via downloader or apk time and they go directly to the usb with an option to change it if you so choose to do so

It would have to be a powered hub and don't get your hopes up. I would stick to maximum 256gb SSD / flash drive in FAT32 format. You risk damaging your Firestick if too much power is pulled through that usb 2.0 port. Some models of USB 3 flash drive will not work as the OS doesn't care for fast flash drive similar to Dodge UConnect OS which maxes out at 32gb and has speed cap which will prevent a fast flash drive from being detected at all. I can confirm that a Canadian Firestick 4K doesn't allow webcam, probably an OS restriction. There are blogs which imply a webcam and Skype can be work on a UK Firestick.

Bought the cable, tried every hard drive/usb stick I own but the stick doesn’t even know it’s there. Yes I have formatted to fat32. I connect the usb and a usb icon bottom right shows up, when I disconnect the usb drive it says I should remove it properly in my tv through the settings. It doesn’t show in the settings! My brand new firestick 4k for my bedroom tv came preloaded with so much stuff that it has less than one gig of free space right out of the box. I know you always want at least 1 gig of free space. Something i didnt understand you choose the 2nd option to format you drive in fat32. So why you get 256g ntfs drive then ? Fat32 isnt limited to 32 g capacity?
I have had Best Buys Geek Squad come out 4 times trying to get this to work. I've been given several reasons for this not working. Needs more power, thumb drive to large, needs to be a USB 3 thumb drive, need 4k firestick. I have bought 3 OTGs, thumbdrives 1g 2.0, 32g 2.0, 32g 3.1, early versions of the firestick, & a 4k firestick. My firestick is in my hdmi port, otg connected to firestick, thumbdrive, and power. This setup exists on all 3 of my smart vizio tvs. TV can't find the drive just the firestick. What's wrong.
Imhave only had success using a 4k Max, with a Ugreen rj45/usb with the otg, others see it temporarily, hit and miss, even with resetting to factory firestick settings, uggggg, thanx for the vid, 👍👍

Not getting those options. Using a 512gb flashdrive. It shows a USB icon appear in the bottom right. When unplugged, says incorrectly disconnected. Shows up in x-plorer but not in firestick settings anywhere. HELP!
I try eith a case 3.0 and 256gb ssd, but nothing...maybe due to the adapter, sometime the light flashed sometimes it doesn't, looks like it doesn't have enaught power (I plug to the wall socke with original adaptor), and I'm so sad since I bought it (luckily on discount price) to see my movies on my external HD :-(

I have an old 32GB microsd that I use in my drone, formatted this to FAT32 on a windows 11 laptop. using the same usb OTG that you have, and have a USB microsd/sdcard reader where I inserted the FAT32 32GB microsd and plugged this to my OTG. went to firestick and usb and shows external usb with about 31GB space. It did not prompt me whether to format as external or device storage. installed a couple of apps - Downloader, Netflix and NordVPN and checked my usb drive and nothing in there. I thought that it would install apps directly to my external USB device. Please advise and thank you.

Why go through all that just to add storage to your Firestick when you can get any number of other devices with more storage built in in the first place? How much better do you feel the 4k max is than the TIvo stream 4k? I was wasting time at Walmart today and saw they had the tivo 4k for $22 dollars. Spec wise the tivo, chromecast, and 4k max are pretty similar right? Wonder if this low price is a bad sign for tivo or a sign a new tivo device is coming out soon.

Hi Mr. Triple, FYI; when at the Home screen on your Firestick, 3 clicks to the Left will put Cursor on the Apps Icon.. After U Select it, 2 clicks to the Left will put Cursor on the last Apk downloaded.. After the Long Press (which I think U learned from me) 2 clicks to the Right will move icon to the top 1st position.. (how is that??) (no charge for this information) It is called Wrap around; works on lots of applications.. ♠W.G.

I did what you did, except with a 64gb usb stick and it isn't showing up on my 4k stick. I tried two usb sticks that work on my computer but they are not showing on the "my fire tv" menu and I don't get the message you get when I plug them in. Any ideas on what is wrong?
guys just go the the app in manage applications if it has an option to move to usb storage otherwise the app has to stay on internal ie kodi can be moved to usb

This video does nothing about the lack of internal storage to install apps like Netflix, Hulu, TNT, etc. Yes you have more storage with the flash drive now to add pictures, emulators and other files but it is useless if you can't move the main streaming apps onto the external drive which is the root of the internal storage issue.

Pardon the stupid question, but why would one need to add so much extra storage? Can you use the drive as a DVR? Or can you only store apps on it?
People add movies, photos, apps, games to their firestick. 8gb of storage runs out quickly. 256 is definitely overkill though 😆

Firesticks and cubes cannot read the 3.0 USB drives only 2.0 format 2.0 USB drive no matter how big to Fat32.

I notice a lot of my apps don’t give the option to move it to external? Some do some don’t. Am I missing something ?
you have to make a copy of the app and delete the original from the firstick and use a file manager app to save that copy back to the firestick.
Do you have to set up on computer before you plug into tv?

Yeah, I get that but a lot of people get it for the ecosystem. Also, a lot of people already have this device and are looking for a storage solution.
I spent 5 bucks on a path drive and 12 on a 64 gig memory stick.

How much better do you feel the 4k max is than the TIvo stream 4k? I was wasting time at Walmart today and saw they had the tivo 4k for $22 dollars. Spec wise the tivo, chromecast, and 4k max are pretty similar right? Wonder if this low price is a bad sign for tivo or a sign a new tivo device is coming out soon.

Hi Mr. Triple, FYI; when at the Home screen on your Firestick, 3 clicks to the Left will put Cursor on the Apps Icon.. After U Select it, 2 clicks
to the Left will put Cursor on the last Apk downloaded.. After the Long Press (which I think U learned from me) 2 clicks to the Right will move
icon to the top 1st position.. (how is that??) (no charge for this information) It is called Wrap around; works on lots of applications.. ♠W.G.

My fire stick 4k I got 256 stick and put a 5 apps on it but I only have 2 mb on my internal it didn’t make a difference why?

I did what you did, except with a 64gb usb stick and it isn't showing up on my 4k stick. I tried two usb sticks that work on my computer but they are not showing on the "my fire tv" menu and I don't get the message you get when I plug them in. Any ideas on what is wrong?
Format the usb from ntfs to default using pc. Then try it

guys just go the the app in manage applications if it has an option to move to usb storage otherwise the app has to stay on internal ie kodi can be moved to usb

This video does nothing about the lack of internal storage to install apps like Netflix, Hulu, TNT, etc. Yes you have more storage with the flash drive now to add pictures, emulators and other files but it is useless if you can't move the main streaming apps onto the external drive which is the root of the internal storage issue.

Couldn't listen due to annoying background music.
Not getting those options. Using a 512gb flashdrive. It shows a USB icon appear in the bottom right. When unplugged, says incorrectly disconnected. Shows up in x-plorer but not in firestick settings anywhere. HELP!
