This was my original way of playing retro games on my TV. I got the original Fire TV Stick back in 2014 and was able to side load Retroarch on it via ADB command line tool. I later upgraded to a newer model of the Fire TV and added a USB hub via an OTG cable so I could connect an external USB drive and wired controllers. I still have that setup with my Fire TV Cube which is still useful for playing older games.
I've have a similar setup with stand alone emulators and dig emulator similar to retro arch .. it's for all systems. I also have basically all of the coin up games for the arcade on the mame emulator
@@valley_robot That makes sense actually, I never really looked into FireStick, but with that being said it is still pretty dang cool you can emulate on such a small device, you know?
I did this with my Fire TV stick years ago, and it works pretty well. I have a TV now and did the same thing. It's nice if you have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse for navigation too. It plays pretty well on lower end games. I usually just sideload apks on mine, but using the downloader app works well, also.
I bought a 4K Firestick a couple of years ago with the intent of using it for emulation. I never got around it using it, but currently setting up emulation on my new mini-PC.
I would love a series of videos about tv boxes retro gaming. There is a lot of tv boxes and it's really hard to tell who is the best in emulating what consoles.
Cool tip customizing the output size! I did this for the gba port of celeste classic to zoom in using custom interger scaled output size and it looks FANTASTIC, with some black bars only on the left n right of the screen on my rg351p (3:2) and my rp2s (4:3)
These type of devices are great for travelling. I always take one on a road trip. I have found myself in a room with an older TV or one where its difficult to get to some of the inputs so I also carry a small bag of video adapters.
The only thing I like about Amazon fire stick is the fact that I can run play store and android apps. I dislike Amazon products so much I won't buy em period. Why you say, I watched. My grandparents buy 9 fire tables and they got scammed into getting the advertisement edition and couldn't exchange them.
Yes but not as easy as the new firesticks because it involves installing adb shell and inputting a bit of code for the firestick to recognize the USB drive... There are several videos from years by different UA-camrs that show you how to do it, you just have to do a search for it.
I would suggest you try this again on a fire tv cube. Though older and 2-3x the price it is a much more capable. Dedicated power supply port, USB-A port, rj-45 port, Double the ram (16gb), 8 core 2.0ghx processor vs 4 core 1.8. I have one for each tv in my house as the sticks are trash in comparison.
Just a thought but I think rather than going for the usb drive, it might be better to get a micro sd reader to upgrade storage over time. I hardly doubt many people will exceed 64gb but I wouldn't be surprised.
I’ve had a Nvidia shield pro for some years and I’ve always wanted to turn it into an emulation device. I just get put off by all the setting up and the downloading of roms. I’d love to see a video on how to set up an a Nvidia shield Pro for emulation, a plug and play option would be amazing.
I had a Fire Stick. Had, past tense. It overheated and shut down after just a few hours of use, and I hadn't even modded it to do emulation, so at that point I just sent it back and decided to never use one again.
I've had many over the years and never had a problem with any, and I've got it heavily modded with media players, downloaded movies, and free streaming platforms like Cinema.
@@TheBrandonnthat makes no sense. We have one on each of the 5 TV's in our house, and we can watch all of them at the same time and there is no interference. Not sure what you did to cause this problem...
Well... this video just gave me the idea of maybe installing emulation station de on my shield tv pro, I already have an external hdd connected to it, and use it as a NAS, might as well backup all my roms there and test out emulation station.
Is there a reason why Saturn standalone on the firestick 4k max from 2021 worked but not on the 2023 refreshed version of the stick? Does this mean the 2021 version is better?
Let’s face it the best thing you’re gonna be playing on your fire stick nowadays especially starting in 2024 July when Xbox game pass comes out officially on to the fire stick 4K Max and the Fire TV cube
I don’t understand what happened? I had the last model fire stick max 4k and all of the apps worked great. This new model won’t let me use my external drive in ppsspp or m64 plus. This was a waste of $40. I’m better off doing a factory reset of my last fire stick. Even he fire stick lite is better than he 2nd ed. max 4k. What happened?
What about those old Amazon Fire Wireless Game Controllers, do they still work? What about 1st Gen Fire Sticks, can they be repurposed for game emulation?
I'm probably not going to do this lol but was still a good tutorial video! I know you've done a tutorial on Batocera in the past but have you ever considered doing one for Retrobat for Windows? I think you would be able to make a great tutorial video for it!👍
When it comes to Android devices I use Arc Browser. For Samsung tablet S8+, Ayn Odin I use the playstore version. For my Nvidia shield and fire stick I had to roll back to version 1.25. Arc Browser gives SAF so no issues on the fire stick.
I’ve never actually downloaded the bio files because nothing that I actually use or play requires them plus I don’t need bootup screens from old systems anyway I’ve been using this emulator for years on my PC but I’d love for it to be on my Fire TV cube that I’m getting here shortly
If you want a good, however old, launcher, ArchEmu works well on fire stick. I have a tutorial as well as links and rom packs on a video on my channel.
I had trouble with controller when you want to play launch retroarch with the controller not the remote all i did was set a hotkey didn't change any controller input yet cuz if u mess up there will be no control and the only thing to do is uninstall and reinstall retroarch for now i wont bind any control other than hotkey
Can it at least connect to an adapter with an 1 extra usb slot for wired usb gaming so I can play 2 players? I don't know if it can handle 2 Bluetooth controller.
Tried this out for myself and it worked wonderfully. Two problems though; for some reason it's not recognizing my PlayStation 1 bios files. I have said files in a specific BIOS folder, along with every PlayStation 1 bios you could think of. The games do run, but apparently with compatibility issues -- although I haven't noticed any yet. The same issue is happening with the Sega CD as well, again I have all the bios' but it won't even run any of the games whatsoever. Is there any way to fix this specifically using the Fire TV Retroarch app? Any help would be much appreciated. Love your channel by the way! It's such a great wealth of game and tech knowledge. In fact, your review of the Super Console X Pro was one of the things that got me into emulation in the first place.
Update: Problem solved, it was just a matter of selecting the right specific directory. I knew it was an easy fix, I just wasn't putting two and two together right away. PlayStation 1 and Sega CD work great now, and -- as a bonus -- I also got Neo Geo up and running! Emulation is officially my new hobby.
Hi, I’ve previously used the Amazon Firestick 4K Max on my TV using Russ’s first Firestick video. Everything worked fantastic. I recently moved everything over to a PC monitor and now the Firestick doesn’t recognize my USB, even after re-formatting to FAT32. Any ideas or suggestions? Thank you!
I'm having trouble configuring an SN30 from 8bitDo: The right analog stick is not being detected neither while on android mode nor xinput thru bluetooth. Any ideas lol?
hey this is grear video, recently i bought one game stick (Sameo Gamestick) game stick contain only 8-bit games, but I want to add more games of 16-bit (especially Wrestlemania) do you know any other method to do so ????
It’ll depend on the controller, I tested a half dozen for this video and found that some were unplayably slow (like the Gulikit King Kong 3 Max), but that the SN30 Pro was the best but when in x-mode.
Also bear in mind that Bluetooth on Android has always had significant input delay. It's why I've always just connected my controllers to my phone through USB-C.
Bought everything that you put links to, got USB stick today and the firestick doesn’t recognise it? Its already MS-DOS (FAT32) but i formatted it again just incase. Still nothing. Any help??
Hey, Im following this guide and got the exact same usb, splitter, and fire stick you recommended, but the firestick wont do anything when I plug in the usb, no prompt or anything appears. Do you have any suggestions for what to do? Thanks
I've been trying to set up the emulators on the firestick by following the instructions in this link but now I'm stuck. My new 128gb 2.0 flashdrive is not reading on my 2021 mackbook pro even with using a USB to Thunderbolt 4 USB-C adapter, any help?

steam os or batocera for one of those
