The WRX engine has way more room to add more power and its way more useable. The GR Corolla valve springs start to fail around 325HP and the differential goes into limp mode too easily. The WRX can get to 380HP with very few mods, and it doesn't have any engine or differential issues.

OMFG!?! Skip the ad?? Nah let him cook!! I had a 16 wrx that i bought new and owned for over 6 years, it was the best car I've ever owned. Had it stage 2 bolt ons with an off the shelf tune, while it wasn't the fastest thing ( couldn't ever take any Infiniti g35/g37 or nissan maxima) it was definately plenty to get you into trouble. Tire setup were pilot sports 4s in the summer and it felt like it was on rails, i never reached the grip limit, and x-ice in the midwest winters and the thing was an absolute tank. After 6 years of ownership it only depreciated $16,000, only mechanical problem i had was the throw out bearing in the clutch fork sticking, had to have 2 clutch replacements under 30k mi. Even though i had been driving manuals for over 10 years. As for practicality one Thanksgiving i placed 4 8' tables and 20 folding chairs in it. The car did everything well, it had personality, it turned into a living thing, the wrx is a truely special car, i genuinely miss it. Thanks Mark and Jack and team for the awesome content.

4:50 The green house, there’s so much more glass. The visibility is incredible, it feels like an older car. Yeah, that really kicks me in the feels. One thing I miss about older cars is amount of light and space given to occupants. Modern cars, by a combination of safety features like side curtain airbags, side crash structures, are inherently darker spaces by design. Modern car designers make this worse by generally picking a dark interior palette. Net result is feeling like you’re sitting in a tiny cave.
The big windows is definitely something that the Subaru designers got right! I'm really hoping we see a general move in the industry towards larger windows.
@@bradcomis1066you won't, high belt lines and low rooflines will make windows seem smaller. Thick pillars are safety bonuses and full curtain airbags beef them up further.
@@mikeydude750 yeah those nannies that hate seeing their loved ones killed in accidents, weird. People with families tend to have their car purchases influenced primarily by safety ratings, and the tests that develop the ratings are constantly getting harder. It wouldn't be such a huge problem if cars were reasonably sized, but there are so many massive trucks and SUVs running around the old style sedan needs to be a tank to survive a collision.
The geese taking flight as Mark reprised the Jimmy Page psychodelic sunglasses by the lake scene from The Song Remains the Same movie was just brutally clever.
I've test driven both the new wrx (limited) and GR. As you can see in the video, there was only a 3 second lap time difference. The GR was superior but the WRX still competed well. Their drag and trap times are very close too. The GR front looks like a base model corolla and the interior seemed cheaper. The WRX sits lower and actually has better interior materials. Like the video mentioned, the WRX has better seats (I sat only the LTD). The WRX has more room inside while the GR feels a little cramped. I also like the visibility on the WRX. While the GR feels raw and racy, I felt the ride was too rough for daily driving especially in a city with a lot of potholes. The WRX was more comfortable. In the past, people complained the WRX was too immature. The WRX is now the mature car and there are still complaints that they miss the rawness of the old models. I ended up not buying either of these cars but still enjoyed test driving. If you plan to race stock on a track like autocross, the GR is the way to go. But anything else, like daily driving, space, seats, interior, etc, the WRX is superior. I terms of mods, the WRX has the higher ceiling. There's already a national known tuner company in Houston that is making the WRX a 10 second car for under 6k. There have been issues with GR mods including the rear dif overheating and AWD system also overheating (you can google it for more details). If I had to choose, the WRX would be my overall choice.

8:45 correction here, the WRX is 50:50 split with a viscous coupling with the manual gearbox. The automatic has a slightly more rear-bias split. The old CVT had a 45/55 split, but they may changed it a bit. It's still rear bias.

The GR would be a great daily, but they seem to have a problem of burning down on the side of a highway, and Toyota doesn't seem interested in figuring out why, or warranty them because they went over 85 mph in the computer data. They resolve this issue it is a great value
Great video! Excellent tuxmat ad placement! This reminds me of the Evo vs STi comparison of the 2003-2006 timeframe where one was more brutish, and one more edgy. I keep hearing ppl compare the GRC to the STi hatch, but the hatch is really where the comparison stops. It delivers powers more like the EVO and I love it! Having owned both an 05 STi and and 06 EVO 9 I traded the STi for the EVO and one was more a hatchet and the other more a scalpel in the way it delivered power and handling.
I love the the small hatchback formula. My first car was a 1988 Honda CRX si and 2nd car a 1993 Civic hatchback vx. And my next daily will be the 2024 GR Corolla Circuit.
Have never driven either, but know several men who owned WRX and modified them. They all moved on to the a Honda Civic STI or R whatever you call it. I'd go with the GR Corolla just because of Toyota build quality and long term reliability.
If you look at the potential when you tune, the wrx blows everything out of the water. They made a brillant engine capable of excess of 600 horses. Just with stage 1, i believe you get up to almost 300 hp.
It has max 12 lb boost, but after 2 years, I can tell you that except in 1rst gear, it rarely boosts over about 9 lbs. It sucks when pulling in 3rd/4th/5th because it never maxes out the power. I would get a tune to fix that, but what's the point? Just trade it in for a BMW or something else already properly tuned.
Great comparison. I really appreciate how you guys focused on what's most important for cars, which is performance and comfort. So many other "youtubers" *ahem car salesmen* drone on and on about small insignificants such as the infotainment, LED lights, how nice the dashboard feels. How many people stroke their dashboards on a daily basis or really care what technology produces their turn signals? You guys do mention those things but in such a non-intrusive way, just the way it should be. One thing that surprised me is how little power the GR Corolla made. On paper, it should blow the WRX away with 300hp but on the dyno it proved otherwise. Very interesting. Makes me wonder what the Civic type R would make on the same dyno.
Well it is faster to 60 by .5 to a full second based on testing. Also faster in the 1/4 mile by .5 a second. It’s mostly down to weight and power delivery.

This is probably one of the best production video I've seen. I mean, the Hagerty videos with Jason Cammisa are astonishing but review wise, you guys are the best out there.
Excellent comparison. Subaru missed an opportunity here, not putting the STI trans/diffs in, and not running a track pad. I chose the WRX: I got it when I wanted it, at invoice, with no haggling. And here's the kicker for me: I wanted great visibility, comfortable for 4 adults, AND capability. I can tune out the chassis later if I choose to race, or swap in an STI transmission. I can't make the car bigger, or less cramped. And that's what drove me away from the GRC to the WRX.
I own a VB and have driven a GR on track and on the road. My take: if it's a track car GR all day. if it's your daily, the WRX is unquestionably the better choice
I have a 2021 WRX and just about all the points about the VB are the reason I won't be trading in for a VB. The character of the FA20 is similar to the 1.6 in the GR, peaky boost and stronger torque hit makes it more aggressive at corner exit without having to be in higher RPM. Other than the brakes, every other issue is a cost that is incurred no matter what. I've already rebuilt all the shifter components, new billet short throw shift plate, solid bushings and shift stops, slightly stiffer suspension components. With a slightly better intercooler and a very mild tune the VA WRX is incredibly competent and I spent a fraction of the cost of a TR. Also I'll take the older infotainment in the previous gen to the horrid system Subaru is using in everything now.
@@PsychoCPU Yeah but the depreciation curve is steepest within the first 3-5 years. Especially when you consider the tacked on costs comprised of taxes and fees. If you would like to swap cars relatively often it may make more sense to lease if you can get a low money factor. You won’t get the full brunt of taxes and you’ll know exactly how much depreciation you’ll be paying for up front.
TR doesnt make sense at its price. Luckily, most dealers are selling below MSRP so that helps. WRXs only makes sense in lower trims imo. My base infotainment has literally never gave me issues but I admit the VA interior layout is more cohesive
We traded our '18 Civic SI with 82k miles for a '23 base WRX and we paid 29k and got 16k for the Civic. I absolutely love the WRX, the fa24f is extremely smooth, it's a blast to launch, great visibility, spacious enough for the family and it handles very well. The MPG isn't anywhere as good as the Civic SI, but otherwise we are very happy.
@g78912 I would recommend starting at 3k RPM, getting used to slipping the clutch while feeding the gas, and then gradually going up by 500 RPM. The hardest I have launched my car was 5k RPM, and the redline comes up really fast. You can do 6k launches, but it will eventually damage your clutch and drive train. Good luck 👍!

If the Corolla has fewer cylinders, does that mean grip is increased because there's isn't as many power pulses on the tires? It's a factor for motorcycles, but I'm not sure if it applies to cars.
Awesome video, as always. I especially like that I have driven these cars and know people who own them, and they are within reach. It's fun to see "exotics" tested but really appreciate the more affordable cars being tested as well.
Finally, the video we needed. TR is still just a perf package. It needed a better tune, because the engine is so under-tuned it's ridiculous. And I would agree with that initial statement, the Corolla GR is a real hot hatch, where the WRX is a slightly sportified sedan. I own a VB WRX, but have owned a lot of hot hatches in England and the USA.. so the GR is just natural territory for me in what I see them achieving. Long story short VB is warm sedan, whilst GR is a hot hatch.
The GRC is still sold at markup because many Toyota dealerships are awful. With that in mind, the WRX is the better buy. Toyota…fix your dealer network, please.
Only problem with the Corolla is the motors are popping at 350whp and requires full bolt ons. You can make way more than that safely with the wrx and all you need is a intake and run e30
@@Toyota4Life never said it didn't look good. If someone didn't know that's not a factory color they'd be very disappointed if they were ready to stroll into their local Toyota dealership looking for a green GR Corolla. What's your point, jagoff?

@@David_Journey out of the box the MX-5 needs help. It was dancing around on the highway with a poor stock alignment and the body roll was comical. I’ve already put a new set of springs, lowered it a couple inches, added adjustable dampers on it, and changed the alignment to a tighter response. It does really beg for just a bit more mid-range torque. The brakes are great after some different pads and fluid. No big break kit is needed unless you track it. Tires on a car like this are already very good. Perhaps going an inch wider is all you really need. People supercharge the engine all the time and don’t have to make major modifications. I just think it just needs about 230hp and it would be in the sweet spot any more and it’s overpowered.
@@David_Journey yes I already know how it drove stock. I own the car. I live in San Diego and it’s full of canyon back roads and sketchy surfaces. I daily my car and do runs with my Miata club. So it lives a full life. I’m telling you now that in stock form it needs some minor adjustments to make it better. That body roll is scary in some corners and the shocks are way too soft. You can pitch the car into oversteer very easily on a double S curve. The car is under sprung. If you don’t drive on very curvy roads and drive on well maintained roads like at less than 50% then stock is a peach, except on the highway. Stock alignment provides an unsteady amount of play in the wheel and it tends to feel a bit darty above 60mph. Especially concrete freeway. If you drive with any kind of spirit, then you need it more focused. It only took about $2k installed to make it drive so much better and there is zero body roll. It’s like a go-cart and it soaks up bumpy pavement much better with some quality dampers like the Konis I have installed that only takes a few moments to set from racing to smooth before you go driving. In stock form, the body roll is there so you get the feeling of speed without actually going fast. I guess we will call it personal preference. I do guarantee that with equal tires I will outpace any stock Miata and feel less stress doing it. Now that extra HP I’m asking for would be great with a club edition and some actual stiffer springs.

The WRX engine has way more room to add more power and its way more useable. The GR Corolla valve springs start to fail around 325HP and the differential goes into limp mode too easily. The WRX can get to 380HP with very few mods, and it doesn't have any engine or differential issues.

This is more or less exactly what Top Gear back in the 2000's said about the WRX vs the Evo, saying exactly what you're saying about the WRX about the WRX, and exactly what you're saying about the GR Corolla about the Evo
20 years later and the WRX still exists. It has a good formula.
To this day I can remember Clarkson summary. The Evo is better in every performative way but on the drive home. He finds himself more drawn to the subaru. Best single sentence summary now almost what? 20 years old?
yeah but the Evo is still running with no issues after 20 yrs and the Subaru is on its 3rd motor so yeah.@@ZackNakazora1

You bring a tear to me eye. Well said....it really is a very special car.
How the fuck was it slower than a maxima? They’re not even fast, my brother has one. Lol
A '16 stage 2 wrx with bolt ons would put bus lengths on the cars you mentioned.... My fbo is making 420whp, and that's only because I'm trying to save the trans and clutch...

Subaru with their whole "Hatchbacks don't sell so we won't make a hatchback WRX" is complete and utter bullshit. The green house, there’s so much more glass.
Yes well said I agree. Especially the back seats.
@@Hawk7886 Sad, all the safety nannies got their way and drivers have less fun for it
@@mikeydude750 yeah those nannies that hate seeing their loved ones killed in accidents, weird. People with families tend to have their car purchases influenced primarily by safety ratings, and the tests that develop the ratings are constantly getting harder.
Can't believe Subaru has never offered the WRX in green .

Still having a blast with my GRC. Everything functions great, I love the engine, surprisingly good handling, decent stick, and perfect size for my needs.
8:45 correction here, the WRX is 50:50 split with a viscous coupling with the manual gearbox. The automatic has a slightly more rear-bias split. The old CVT had a 45/55 split, but they may changed it a bit. It's still rear bias.
Was that for the VB? I remember the VAs being 45/55 for the MT and 40/60 for the CVT.
Funny how that rear bias works when tested 24:50
60/40 cvt
45/55 cvt with rear bias. However the GT has VTD variable torque distribution. So it can send more to the rear , more than 55%

I'd really like to see a video comparing the GR Corolla and the GR Yaris! If that's something you can make happen I'd be so stoked!
The GR would be a great daily, but they seem to have a problem of burning down on the side of a highway, and Toyota doesn't seem interested in figuring out why, or warranty them because they went over 85 mph in the computer data. They resolve this issue it is a great value
Just wanted to thank you guys for the awesome videos. Keep up the amazing work!
I actually took a gamble on the potenza race before any reviews came out and I love them. (2022 Veloster N)
I love the the small hatchback formula. My first car was a 1988 Honda CRX si and 2nd car a 1993 Civic hatchback vx. And my next daily will be the 2024 GR Corolla Circuit.
The WRX hatch didn't sell well?! It was over 50% of WRX sales, and now 100% of Impreza sales
It's not on an Impreza platform
Isn’t the Impreza only available as a hatchback?
Have never driven either, but know several men who owned WRX and modified them. They all moved on to the a Honda Civic STI or R whatever you call it. I'd go with the GR Corolla just because of Toyota build quality and long term reliability.
If you look at the potential when you tune, the wrx blows everything out of the water. They made a brillant engine capable of excess of 600 horses. Just with stage 1, i believe you get up to almost 300 hp.
DO you know if you can safely raise the RPM to 7000rpm? 6000 is way too freaking low for me
OMG. Only Savagegeese does an embedded commercial even better than the program.
I like that you had professional driver test the cars and give his thoughts. That was the best part of the video.

Your branded digital content Tuxmat ad was legitimately so well produced I didn't skip. Congrats on expanding the business tastefully. Appreciate ya
Without question, the best infomercial I've ever experienced for any brand. You made me cry. That was incredible!
The Tuxmat portion was brilliant, lol!
It only took Subaru 20 years to figure out proper tuning. Great review as usual
nah, they are made lean to save fuel. but the engines run a risk of overheating and breaking down prematurely. cold air intakes make it worse.
These boys and redline reviews I find the best at reviews, straight to the point no fussing around, and straight to the point, honest opinion. If you want some entertainment then throttle house but these boys are number one followed by redline. Excellent video once again, well done
So the corrrola claims 300bhp and the wrx claims 271 bhp. The dyno says differently.
That’s the engine hp, dynos test how much is actually being delivered to the wheels
@RiptideOnTop I'm pretty sure he knows that therefore he said bhp, what he's trying to convey is Toyota is either over inflating their numbers or Subaru is underrating theirs, something ain't adding up.
Dyno graphs are available online and they confirm the manufacturer claimed power figures for both to be accurate.
Yaris GRMN would smoke all of these... You guys need to see what Rally drivers have been doing with the 2024 Yaris, they have been pulling off some really CRAZY times and even setting some new world record times for a lot of stages... It's crazy how that little shitbox performs in WRC!
Only SG can make embedded sponsor plugs as entertaining as the rest of the video. Brilliant!
Thank you TuxMat! You've reunited we with my estranged father.
You guys have quickly become one of my favorite UA-cam pages! Appreciate all you do!
Why would you trade in a late MY VA for a VB anyway? Your car is only 3 years old.
@@enmass90 you keep max trade in value if you trade in while miles are still low and it's still relatively new.
This video has incredible production quality. I loved your old videos but these new videos are next level. Big props to you guys.

Just got my ‘24 Limited. I’m a pretty new manual driver, how do you launch it?
@g78912 I would recommend starting at 3k RPM, getting used to slipping the clutch while feeding the gas, and then gradually going up by 500 RPM. The hardest I have launched my car was 5k RPM, and the redline comes up really fast. You can do 6k launches, but it will eventually damage your clutch and drive train. Good luck 👍!

So it’s hard to want either of these. I’m glad I have an MX-5. I just want another 50hp.
50 hp without more tires, suspension and break tuning will just lead to spoiled balance on such a fine car as mx5 is…
@@David_Journey out of the box the MX-5 needs help.
@@AmericanDuck that body roll is welcome on real world back roads with potholes and imperfection. It is a perfect daily driver
