Have a GRC with basically the same setup minus the brakes. I don’t think you need to take it to $70k to beat a CTR/EN on track, considering it was less than 0.1 second behind a CTR stock with identical tires. You could probably do: 2025 GRC Core - $39k Ohlins R&T/Annex- $2700 Camber Bolts - $30 That alone would probably dust a CTR/EN for a single hot lap well under CTR MSRP while not turning into complete ass in less than ideal road conditions. To take it to something that would do it all day without going into limp mode: 555 transmission cooler - $1500 (can’t speak to this just yet, mine just shipped) Syvecs AWD controller - $1000 Powertrain wise, if you don’t mind voiding your warranty, a tune and intake ($1300 for remote through Limit+1, $460 Sxth intake) will take you to +40 whp, 30 wtq. Not sure how far you’d want to go beyond that, given the relatively soft valve springs. Power will vary more than competitors given the amount of boost required. In more ideal conditions, C&D managed a 4.4 0-60 despite hitting 60 in third, stock. After a tune, I actually ended up driving my car in the custom mode with eco drivetrain most of the because I prefer the power delivery. This thing rips with a tune. www.caranddriver.com/news/a61687494/2024-toyota-gr-corolla-premium-test-analysis/ Suspension imo was the biggest weakness in the stock setup. Basically with the addition of coilovers you beat any ICE hot hatch on the market on track for under 43k. This is actually a tremendous value. Add transmission cooling ($2500), oil cooling (~$1500), and a intake/tune ($1800), you’re still getting a pretty decent deal compared to competitors that’ll do a full track day, all though value proposition isn’t as strong. 70k is kind of absurd. They paid 7k for essentially a cosmetic package as the circuit actually weighs more than a fully loaded core, then spent 6k on a brake package that’s overkill unless you live on a track, intake that sounds amazing (I have one) but could probably be replicated output wise for $1100 less, $600 rear upper control arms despite fairly aggressive rear camber (over -2 from factory that can go more aggressive with ride height adjustments alone) and also a $1000 exhaust that weighs +10lbs more than stock. Props to savagegeese for seeing the potential in this platform.
Great video! Enjoyed learning about all of the OEM limitations of these cars and the innovative aftermarket solutions to address them. Just curious if you had more to discuss regarding the Elantra N in this context. You piqued my interest with the brief mention of the Elantra N near the beginning.
People think it’s crazy Jack spent essentially 70k on a GRC, meanwhile Keiichi Tsuchiya is sitting 80k+ in his 40 year old AE86 Corolla. Lol. All jokes aside it is crazy.
Great video! So two components are needed to fix the limp mode/transfer case issue on the GRC: (1) Syvecs - AWD Controller and (2) 555 Engineering - Transfer Case Cooler. Do you happen to have a link to these products?
As someone that has tracked his last 5 daily drivers, I've come to the conclusion that it's just not worth it. Daily drivers have too many compromises. Get a second car, even if it's cheap, and build it up from there. Preferably NA and lightweight, ie Miata or GR86/BRZ or at least older (lighter and slower) Mustang/Camaro/Corvette. Turbo and supercharged engines get too hot and pull boost, killing much of the fun. Light because it's much better on brakes/tires/handling and teaches you to be a better driver. Unless you're a Jack that can afford to drop $25k on upgrades, which still didn't solve all the cars problems, just make a dedicated car.
Exactly right! these are fun street cars that can do some light track duty. i can't understand why everyone is surprised that they have deficiencies on track.
The Focus RS also suffers from premature brake failures due to them using the ABS as a traction control device rather than an actual limited slip diff. Sure...it makes the car quicker for a few laps until the brakes catch on fire and one reviewer actually got flames from a spirited run through the twisties without actually touching the brake pedal. Sorry but I find this totally unacceptable and will stay with my SVT Focus which does none of that nonsense.
Great video, love how in depth you guys get. I’ve been interested in a CTR or GR Corolla because of what they represent (especially the CTR), track ready enthusiast vehicles which are more “affordable.” But after watching this I feel like I’m actually less interested in either car, watching these major flaws that they have, and the investment needed to rectify them. Granted driving day to day on the street one wouldn’t really have these issues, but I kind of get this “you get what you pay for” vibe and see why maybe that more expensive (insert sports car name) is justified in its pricing.
If you are really tracking this much, just grab a Spec Miata and race it (way more fun) or track it. You can run it for days without any brake fade. Miata remains the answer.
Yeah.. pads, fluid and hoses is all you need brake-wise for all-day Miata fun. And you'll still be out-braking everything else on the last session. No further braking upgrades needed unless you add forced induction
This is very interesting and I had a lot of concerns with the braking on my Integra Type S. I did some research and chose to go with the stock brake fluid (higher temp rating than standard dot3), Paragon titanium brake shims to reduce heat transfer in the front into the calipers, and Hawk HP+ which were crazy loud but just tremendous braking force compared to stock. No brake issues at all at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park GP track, but maybe it has longer stretches that lets the brakes cool down but I also have some upgrades and a custom tune that should put the car to 360-380hp. Perhaps I'm just not pushing the brakes hard enough too with the PS4S tires. I did have torque vectoring on. Sessions were between 12 to 20 laps. Each lap was around 1:48. I guess there was also some traffic at times and even had to wait to pass a GT3 RS every session. So maybe I didn't get a chance to go full out for more than 3 laps at a time. Ambient temp was around 20C so more manageable too. I track once a year and really didn't want to go to dot4 and half year brake fluid flushes. Looking at the front and back of the brake shim, the color change speaks volumes as to it reducing heat transfer. Would be interesting how this car does in hotter weather with less traffic.
THANK YOU! I have been comparing these two online and on the forums ever since the GR yaris and FK8 civic were compared and people fantasized about a GR version of the corolla
So... basicaly as always the answer is Miata. Used 10k. Easy. 10 grand suspension/brakes and tires. Even if you want to splurge another 5 in miscelanious like throtle bodies and exaust maybe a clutch. We are still at 50% of the cost on a stock one of these 2. You kan say its a do it all thing, frankly why would you take your 1 car to a track day? If you kan aford a track session, you kan aford the prep eny shit box would need to be a track focused beater
Agreed. Best bet? Buy someone’s used track toy and pay the markup for the upgrades on a ratted car. It’ll be cheaper than building it yourself. The build process is exciting but goddamn do you bleed money for the chore of doing all the work yourself. All that said I’m looking at salvage title ND1s to convert to a track toy and probably won’t take my own advice. 😂
For what it’s worth, with Hawk DTC-60 front, DTC-30 rear pads and RBF brake fluid I haven’t experienced any brake fade in either my FK8 or FL5 Civic Type Rs.
I have both and love both. My GR unfortunately hit a deer and the replacement parts are non existing. They deemed it a total loss today. My 24 Type R will carry the torch for now. It has 50,000 Miles as well!
i’ll be getting the same Apex wheels on my red CTR, they look almost identical to stock and get the stance just right, while adding sidewall. Look so good.
I work for a Toyota dealership, stellar explanation of the from factory inherent lack off 'track' capability of the stock GR Corolla. The more you know...
I would love to see a manual Supra or an M2 build on the channel! A little more expensive than the Corolla was but it would be awesome to see one of those cars built track-oriented the right way!
The next build series just has to be the new Mustang GT if it's gonna be a V8. I truly believe you are the guys on YT who will objectively approach that car with a realistic mindset to turn the s650 platform into a true dual-purpose machine ...and maybe even convince those of us who prefer German to American ( example: my wife's boyfriend) into an American "sports" car
Great video. I think that it's funny that people care about the track so much. In stock form the CTR is faster, so what. You are there to have fun and if you are slightly faster or slower it doesn't change the fun factor. Most people don't track and these are both fun to drive on the street. Where the GRC really shines is on back mountain roads, and in bad weather and snow the fun really begins. There is no contest on a rally course either. The CTR gets the win in stock form on the track, but I'll take a GRC for real world, all weather driving fun every day. I'm glad to see that you spoke about the 555 transfer case cooler. When watching I kept saying, why don't you install the 555 transfer case cooler??? 🤣 Luckily you don't have to spend much of anything on the GRC to have an amazing car on the street in all kinds of weather.
@@davidzebar6876 Well that depends on where the track is in relation to the owner. I'v driven many different cars on the track and the tracks near me aren't anything to get excited about. I've been racing in different forms since the 80's so I know what I personally like and could care less about. I don't care what people do to enjoy their fun cars, the track, autoX, fun back roads, canyons, that is up to the owner. Not everyone wants to dump $400 for a track day so I don't hold that against them. But most people spend 99% of the time on public roads, so worrying about little things on the track that doesn't change the fun factor of the day does seem silly to me, but to each their own.
I run my FL5 with Carbotech XP12/XP10 and castrol SRF on Kuhmo v730 tires at VIR in advanced groups on HPDE and I never have had the pedal get to the ground and that’s a hard and fast track. Now I did eat through front pads in 3 days with VSA off in Type R mode. I did get pedal bottom out when I ran Endless MX72+ pads though.
When on track, peddle dance required!! The ITS (Acura Integra Type S aka the type r twin) is so good on track!! The same is required on a STi, full traction control OFF. Extreme summer tires on the smallest wheels you can fit.
Any chance that treadwear rating contributed to that brake fade happening earlier than expected? Who was the source on the FL5 having a different braking system (or brake-based vectoring) than the FK8? I had understood that airflow was changed, but the brakes and application of braking was the same…
I’d love to see a series like this on either a Mustang GT or an Audi RS3 since I’m considering buying one. I think you’ve said they’re both a bit boring stock, but they have high performance levels for the money and I’d love to see what some track-focused mods could do
Great video! Handful of questions for you guys: 1. Have you tried Castrol SRF brake fluid vs. the Endless? 2. Do you think adding something like titanium shims would help the front brake seals - or is it more of a gimmick 3. The brake torque vectoring on the CTR - is that only on the rear axel?
What did we learn here? That both the GRC and CTR are really about $30k worth of fun, and that parts on these cars are not “Asian” cheap. They’re “Euro” expensive.
I know Jack and Mark dislike the Golf R (at least on the track) but I'd still like to see it as the next long term car. It's the other all-wheel-drive option in the hot hatch market, and living in Michigan makes me appreciate those car in the winter.
B85 340i or 440i it's really a tough call whether I should get a gr Corolla or a b85 bmw. This would be a great car to look at right after you dived so deep into the GR.
I have a '24 GRC Premium, been following your series since the beginning, you're most of the reason I was able to convince my GF to get the car over the Honda because of the hatch size. The AWD had been great in spirited driving and anything but the track. I have the E50 Tune from Limit +1 and the Eventuri, it's like a completely different car. I'll have to get those cheap struts from your last video. Also, American V8. Please do the Camaro SS 1LE on a count of how "cheap" they are and how strong they are. I feel like they're a much better and cheaper platform than anything German you're thinking of. It would be cool to see a base/Premium/Limited VB WRX go through something like the GRC did.
I think someone else did it. The wrx took the most beating out of the 2. Was slower than type R but faster than gr corolla.
Have a GRC with basically the same setup minus the brakes. I don’t think you need to take it to $70k to beat a CTR/EN on track, considering it was less than 0.1 second behind a CTR stock with identical tires.
You could probably do:
2025 GRC Core - $39k
Ohlins R&T/Annex- $2700
Camber Bolts - $30
That alone would probably dust a CTR/EN for a single hot lap well under CTR MSRP while not turning into complete ass in less than ideal road conditions.
To take it to something that would do it all day without going into limp mode:
555 transmission cooler - $1500 (can’t speak to this just yet, mine just shipped)
Syvecs AWD controller - $1000
Powertrain wise, if you don’t mind voiding your warranty, a tune and intake ($1300 for remote through Limit+1, $460 Sxth intake) will take you to +40 whp, 30 wtq.
This thing rips with a tune.
www.caranddriver.com/news/a61687494/2024-toyota-gr-corolla-premium-test-analysis/
Suspension imo was the biggest weakness in the stock setup.
So mainly what I got from this is to buy a lightly used Cayman if I want a small track car. You pay for the performance one way or the other.
💯
Yeah, but your car won’t be as “ReLiAbLe” as the others.
People think it’s crazy Jack spent essentially 70k on a GRC, meanwhile Keiichi Tsuchiya is sitting 80k+ in his 40 year old AE86 Corolla. Lol.
All jokes aside it is crazy.
Great video! So two components are needed to fix the limp mode/transfer case issue on the GRC: (1) Syvecs - AWD Controller
and (2) 555 Engineering - Transfer Case Cooler. Do you happen to have a link to these products?
The comment about SRS sent me through the roof laughing. Keep up the great work‼️
Best UA-cam car reviews period
I love videos this honest. Helps kill the fomo of always wanting something new. (still love my evo8 😊)
Your Evo 8 is honestly a better car than the Corolla, and arguably even the Type R. I know I prefer my obsolete, slower STi.
Thank you for this series, including this particular video. The dynamic between Mark and Jack is just terrific to watch.
Why not stay with the hot hatch theme and give the Golf R a look? If you're going American, CT4V Blackwing would be a great choice for a series.
Suddenly a stock Golf R is looking pretty good again
B-b-b-but it has weird touch controls just like every other car!!
Solution: Mk7.5 R
Problem with the Golf R is the lack of a front LSD. You end up cooking the brakes to an absurd to degree.
My wife’s boyfriend and I woke up early together for this one. She just doesn’t have the T levels to understand the magnitude of this masterpiece.
I'd love to see a MK8 Golf R, specifically DSG full testing
favorite video of the year! great job guys!
Fantastic video all around guys!
Can you do a track series on Jack’s Z06 and how reliable it is for track duty?
the discrepancy between mark and jack's chairs is too great.
For what it’s worth, with Hawk DTC-60 front, DTC-30 rear pads and RBF brake fluid I haven’t experienced any brake fade in either my FK8 or FL5 Civic Type Rs.
Jack is my favorite DEI hire 😊
Oof
Hearing you talk about the wheels makes me appreciate the double meaning of the word "forged".
I have both and love both. My GR unfortunately hit a deer and the replacement parts are non existing. They deemed it a total loss today.
My 24 Type R will carry the torch for now. It has 50,000 Miles as well!
Awesome! How’s the CTR handling the miles?
are you the guy from facebook?
Time to buy Syvecs and 555 cooler 🤘
i’ll be getting the same Apex wheels on my red CTR, they look almost identical to stock and get the stance just right, while adding sidewall. Look so good.
I work for a Toyota dealership, stellar explanation of the from factory inherent lack off 'track' capability of the stock GR Corolla.
The more you know...
I bought a Camaro SS 1LE because the GRC, CTR, and Z were going for crazy money.
This video cured my FOMO
For the money yeah it was the right choice
The fk8 also has brake torque vectoring, not new, just a FYI
This was so much fun all the way through, with Jack’s theme song being the ultimate cherry on top.
Jack’s warranty is not only void, but Toyota will be sending him a fine for having this much fun.
TCR edition for the Elantra N just dropped!!!
No real world performance improvement
@@justinbecker4772larger 4 piston brakes, but that’s about it
@@jeffspaulding5116 yeah, I don't think they saw brake overheating issues on track. Correct me if I'm wrong.
@@justinbecker4772 brakes…possibly, wing only in theory, but hey the seatbelts kinda clean!
Holy shit that Silverback Jack song was absolutely gold and a perfectly describes Jack.
As the owner of an SS 1LE, I approve of the message at 19:32. Great vid, guys! Also, you know my recommendation for the next car series :)
i actually watched the ad all the way through. well done
It's always amazing to me that people will drop $50k on a performance car but then not bother spending $400 on a track day
@@davidzebar6876 Well that depends on where the track is in relation to the owner.
I have a 2024 Camaro 1SS 6MT. Amazing car! Nothing comes close for the money.
Handful of questions for you guys:
1. Have you tried Castrol SRF brake fluid vs. the Endless?
2. Do you think adding something like titanium shims would help the front brake seals - or is it more of a gimmick
3. The brake torque vectoring on the CTR - is that only on the rear axel?
6:35 Forget "King of the Track", Mark Goose is going to win an Emmy for best infomercial #runningman
What did we learn here? That both the GRC and CTR are really about $30k worth of fun, and that parts on these cars are not “Asian” cheap. They’re “Euro” expensive.
What is a Miata? $15K of fun? Weird flex.
They're too expensive for the performance. A used miata or older porsche cayman would end up costing less.
I know Jack and Mark dislike the Golf R (at least on the track) but I'd still like to see it as the next long term car. It's the other all-wheel-drive option in the hot hatch market, and living in Michigan makes me appreciate those car in the winter.
Jack’s theme song is fire. Made the whole video worth it
Okay now put a thicker rear sway bar and aftermarket rear motor mount on the type r. See how nice it’ll rotate then.
B85 340i or 440i it's really a tough call whether I should get a gr Corolla or a b85 bmw. This would be a great car to look at right after you dived so deep into the GR.
$70k Corolla is insane.
But have you seen prices for clean AE86s? 😅
Can grab an m2 for 68k out of your mind if you buy a Corolla for that much @@punjabeeplaya
Yeah the GR makes sense as a dad car when you have a couple of kids but damn… I can’t imagine spending that much on one.
As someone who is saving up to put in $17k worth of mods into my 30 year old Miata..I think it's insane in the best way lol
@@michaelw6277 as a dad who owns the car, it doesn’t have a lot of space. Lol
I can’t wait to get my 2025 GR COROLLA Premium in Heavy Metal💯💪
I have a '24 GRC Premium, been following your series since the beginning, you're most of the reason I was able to convince my GF to get the car over the Honda because of the hatch size. The AWD had been great in spirited driving and anything but the track. I have the E50 Tune from Limit +1 and the Eventuri, it's like a completely different car. I'll have to get those cheap struts from your last video. Also, American V8. Please do the Camaro SS 1LE on a count of how "cheap" they are and how strong they are. I feel like they're a much better and cheaper platform than anything German you're thinking of. Also I'm bias, my next car after my '22 ZR2 Silverado is paid off is gonna be a Camaro SS 1LE next year lol
