Now I understand how was my grandma feeling when I taught her how to use her new iPhone
Tab 2, page 4: "Release without lens". When you shoot with an old manual lens with simple adapter, and there is no electronic communication from lens to body, you MUST have this setting enabled. That is, in this situation the camera thinks that there is no lens attached, and it won't shoot unless this setting is enabled.

also the e-shutter makes less light in than mechanical
Good to know! Thank you.
I shoot a lot with Legacy lenses and this is an important parameter to change....
I shoot with old lenses and also with adapters, some do not communicate with the camera so this function is essential.
Finally a video by someone who either speaks well, or spends the time to remove the irritating filler words, (ah, you know, actually). You deserve to have the many viewers because you care enough to put out a quality presentation.
The one thing I wish you would have covered is how to connect to your computer using wi-fi.
Camera brands MUST pay you to ship their cameras with your user guide videos (Maybe a QR code?), this is way better than going through the ones that come with the camera.
I know this video is old but there's one important correction for the people looking to customize this (still) popular camera:
Long Exposure NR *does* affect RAW files. It doesn't work like other forms of noise reduction where they only apply to JPEGs. Basically, if you take a long exposure (say, 30 seconds) then some pixels may get "hot" and display as bright red or other colors. Long Exposure NR counteracts this by immediately taking an equal length, dark (shutter curtain down) exposure after your initial/real exposure. It then detects these hot pixels in the otherwise black exposure and references their location to then subtract the hot pixels from your initial exposure. This way, the camera knows that it is removing a hot pixel rather than, say, stars in a night sky.
The benefit is that your final image has faulty, bright pixels removed. It can drastically improve the quality of a long exposure photo. The downside is that your exposure takes twice as long to finish.
Just received my A7iii yesterday. I love it so far!! Thank you Jared Polin for this User's Guide. There are tons of settings!
Every time I learn something new about my camera, I feel as if I have a new camera, but really it's a new me and better photographer. Thank Fro Bro 👁🙏👁
7:54 "there are 38000 pages" - I laughed so hard
Thanks for this Jared, been struggling since I got mine. This is so helpful!
Thanks for this Jared! My a7iii finally arrived and this walkthrough helped. The menu layout is not too different from the a6000, so that's nice that there's some consistency between models. You did a great job explaining what you change and why. The why is the most important part for my purposes. Thanks again and keep up the great work.
By the way, I listened to your pod about UA-cam and your channel. This is a good example of a longer video that I watched all the way through. You kept the segments short and to the point, which will keep the folks with short attention spans watching. Just my .02 thanks
This is one of the most helpful videos for getting started with Sony Aiii 7. Thank you for making it. I plan on signing up for your course. Since I have been away from the photography world for a long time. Thanks Again!
This was by far the most helpful guide that I’ve seen on the A7iii. Thank you!
Thanks for this Jared! I just picked up the A7III and this helped get the initial settings ready to go. Also, I've never commented before but have been following for a while now. Thank you for all the information you put out to the photography world!
Thank you ! Watched it twice, followed along with my new A7iii that I purchased after your real world review... saved me a ton of time as I’m new to higher end cameras. I watch every video and listen to raw talk and the daily fro every day... thank you again for all your hard work! You’ve educated and inspired me...
I just found Jared, what is raw talk and fro everyday? Where do I find this?
I've watched many of your videos and I've never commented below any of them, this seems like the right occasion. Thank you very much, Jared, your videos rock!
AT 12:50 SWT V/H af area is actually pretty cool. I turn it on and it let's you have independent focus areas for portrait and landscape orientation and it will switch automatically when using flexible spot focus so you don't have to keep joysticking back and forth.
Just upgraded from A7ii, so this was a useful review. It made sense to me because it was well done and also because of my previous experience with Sony’s arcane menu system. Glad this was still available! Thanks for all you do.
Really good advice, thank you! Had an issue with formatting cards (couldn’t find the option) and you sorted it for me.
Man you just dont know how much you have helped me with this video i got my A7iii coming soon, and now i know how to set it up and how to make changes and also customize to my liking, Great Video as always. Thanks Bro!
I am looking at options of cameras as I am looking to take my photography and career to the next level. I appreciate the tutorial. This helps to filter through my preferences and know what the experience may be like. Thanks for the detailed tutorial.
Thanks! This was very helpful & now I’m super excited to buy mine!
Huge thanks again. Your users guide was a huge help for me when I was getting started on my Sony A6000. Can't wait to get started shooting on my A7iii. Cheers!
Excellent review Jared. You did an outstanding job, thanks for your expertise
Also reliable videos when it comes to setting up my camera!
Mine is ordered and I'm excited for my first full frame camera since I shot with 35 mm black and white. The a6000 that I'm currently using, will move to a backup. Thanks for all your videos. You are fun to watch and very informative.
Thanks for making the billion menu pages really straight forward - appreciate it!
Thank you so much Jared! As a new Sony user, this video totally helped me out.
Dude I just bought the sony A7iii and your video was such a huge help. I have shot canon since I picked up a camera and I've decided to try the Sony out. I was so confused on the menu settings and was getting worried. However, you broke it down effortlessly that I now feel super confrontable with it and ready to take some beautiful imaginary. I have always enjoyed your videos but now I have; like, comment, subscribed, AND I have that bell on!!! Keep up the great work you freaking rock!!!!
FML this was soooo helpful! Thank you! I still read the manual, but seeing it makes more sense!
Thanks for the detailed info on the camera. Rented it for a project and this helped a ton! Thanks fro
Brilliant info'... I have the A7rIII and you have explained the menu for as much as I need to know..... I will run through it all again.. with the camera active.
Thanks.. from Dj.
Great video. Received this camera for Christmas and this expedited my ability to get out and shoot with it. Extremely helpful, thank you! Subscribed.
"FRO" really does know photo. I just acquired this camera and having learned so much from your commentary in other videos re Nikon and fundamentals, I was happy to find that you cover this equipment as well. I appreciate the effort you put into covering the useful information that we, your loyal viewers can rely on consistently.
Thank you for going over the outside of the camera. First day with the a7iii coming over from Canon. I needed the quick tour!
Thank you. I just received my camera today. Now I have a great starting point. Your videos on Sony convinced me to purchase the A7III.
This was super helpful since I recently upgraded to this from a 5Dii. Thanks!
This was so helpful. I actually ended up putting RAW on slot 1 and JPG on slot 2. I do big shoots and loading the RAWs onto the computer is time consuming. We review the JPGs to decide which ws to open. It'll be nice to only have to load jpgs while reviewing shoots.
The 'Reg Cust Shoot Set' and 'Recall Custom hold' are very useful. You should look into it.
Hey Jared. Solid video on thorough menu descriptions and recommendations. Just got my A7iii and it's a steep learning curve although I've been a Nikon user for many years. It is a complicate menu and your suggestions are greatly appreciated. I just subscribed.
Thank you so much for such a detailed video and I also agreed, you spoked so well and explained the menus well too. So much better than reading the manual. Thanks again.
This was a huge help! I made those setting from JPEG to RAW and EXTRA FINE and most others setting as well and what a huge difference in quality. Thanks!
thanks a lot, about to collect my a73 today . your video is much appreciated. keep it up.
Thanks Jared this helped a lot! the menus are nuts so but I'm glad you cleared up some stuff for me.
Brilliant and very helpful, used for my newly collected A7iii with 16-35 f4 today, thankyou.
So much appreciated! I just ordered a Sony a7iii and while I'm used to Sony's insane menu system (been shooting Sony since 2011), this was a good run down of what's going to be on the new camera!
This was fantastic and thorough, thank you!
Hi Jared. I just want to take the time to thank you for the incredible service that you provide for both amateur and professional photographers. I just recently discovered your UA-cam page. I recently returned from an Alaskan cruise vacation, where I used my Samsung s10+ for video shooting and my daughter's Canon Rebel XS for stills. I didn't realize how generic that camera was until I compared the shots with my cell phone pics. I used to be in the photo game some 30+ film years ago, using Canon AE-1 (which I still have, boxed away somewhere), but I had to get out of the game because I am also a professional musician and couldn't keep up with both "hobbies'. Anyway, after looking at my Rebel XS photos, I've decided I need to invest in a good up to date system and get back into the game. So I've been watching your channel. Probably watched 20 or more videos and now narrowing it down to which camera system I want. Although I really wanted to like and stay with Canon ( the EOS R or RP), this Sony A7 III is probably the one I will go with. It's a little more than I wanted to invest right now, but, I think I won't have to invest in another camera for at least a couple years or more. I won't be shooting professionally. I really appreciate your video reviews. They are very informative, lively, no BS, not pushing one brand over another, simply stating the realistic facts. I just watched a review of this A7 III from another UA-cam channel. It was so dry and dull that if I had seen that UA-cam review first, I may not have bought ANY camera at all! Anyway , thanks a lot. Once I'm back into the game, I'll be sure to invest in some of your videos and photography programs. Thanks.
Also: I just read through a couple of comments below. Now I see where that word "haters" comes from. If they could do it better they'd have their own UA-cam channel and wouldn't be depending on your reviews. Geez!
Keep up the good work Jared!
Just picked up my A7III and it was nice to have someone go through the menus. Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much! I'm still waiting for delivery of my camera but this will make setting it up so much easier.
I just picked up this camera and this video was extremely helpful.Thank you for doing this.
Thank you! Just ordered the a7III - these steps were very easy to follow and start with. Who needs hours of detailed explanations from other Sony experts that make no sense or put you to sleep?
FYI It is Flexible Spot Medium with the M. There is a S and L option if you go left or right that changes the size of your flexible spot. Great Video!
Excellent!!! I'm researching this camera for purchase and you answer a couple of questions in my mind with this clip!!!! Many thanks!
Thank you for the users' guide, I found it very helpful.
Hi Jared, I'm so glad I found this video. I just bought this camera on Saturday. I'm an amateur/hobby newborn photographer. I am investing in my future as a photographer and I went from a Canon Rebel XSI crop sensor camera that was bought used to the Sony a7 lll. I wanted a full frame camera because I was about ready to give up with cameras and just go back to using my S20 ultra cell phone only. I found exactly what I needed with this video. I will be watching a lot of your videos. On to the next one now. Thanks so much!!!
Just rented this for a week - what a menu system nightmare!!! But, your video helped a lot to explain the madness, so thanks.
Bro, that was a marathon effort to go through all those settings. Great job! And viewers get rewarded at the end to hear your catchy byline once more.🤘
Thank you for making this helpful video. Yours is the first video I watched to set up my new a7iii
Even though I just bought myself an A7R II this video was still VERY helpful as A LOT of the menu and settings are VERY similar or even the SAME! This is my first really good camera and my first mirrorless as I had been using my mom's Nikon D90 before this and just recently scraped up enough money to buy myself this new used camera and used lens (both of MPB) and the menu was SUPER initimidating! (An it wasn't even as big as the III).I really appreciate your recommendation on what you changed and what you kept the same so now I'm thinking I'm gonna go back through and re-arrange some things! I super appreciate all of your help with the photography community!
Thanks Jared! Very informative (and complex)! I'm seriously considering this camera...
Thanks Jared, I could see you were nearly falling asleep due to its simplicity to you but you've helped a lot of people. This is my first camera (with the sigma 24-70mm 2.8 art). I now feel less intimidated by those menus and know where to find things, without reading the manual.
Great video Jared, i really enjoyed it and it helped me a lot i just bought the camera and watching all your tips has given me some extra confidence in using it!
Loved watching this video! So incredibly helpful!
I’ve got my Sony a 73 a couple of days ago and will be having some fun with it shortly I’ve no doubt!
Hey Jared, thanks for this. Just got my a7iii and this guide is very helpful.
Great video bud. I had to watch it gto find out where the grid lines were hidden. Ended up watching all your video cause it's amazing. Keep posting the good content. Cheers
Thanks for putting this video together. It was very helpful.
I just purchased the Sony a7iii and appreciate the complete walk through. Very helpful!
Very helpful tutorial. I am coming from Canon FF and this is a great short-cut to access the way Sony does stuff. I am sure I will be able to jump off this once I become more familiar with my A7R 111 and see what some of the settings that were glossed over in the video, actually do.
I watched a Sony a7iii user's guide video by a renowned photographer. He spoke too fast and used fancy terms I didn't understand. It made me feel overwhelmed and hopeless. Then, I watched yours, and I felt like it makes sense. Thank you!
I hoping to buy this exact camera this week. Thanks so much for the helpful guide
This video helped me out a ton! Thank you! Just switched from Canon.
Brilliant Video, Ty I think the release without lens is for allowing one to take images when a totally manual lens adaptor is fitted for M42 threaded lens or manual focus nikons etc.
Jared Polín makes the most reasonable camera videos on UA-cam. This guy really deserves a TV show. Make him famous UA-cam!!!
Thanks for making the effort putting this vid together. Subscribed!
Excellent directions and easy to follow. Thank you.
One of the best videos out there. Liked and subscribed. Thank you!
This video is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
You had a hard job for new beginner who is with Sony. I just got A7C but it's hard to set or use this new one. I learned a lot of this function. Thank you Jared!!
Thanks so much for taking time to make this for us all!!
Thank you! Very helpful...wish you would make these videos for all the electronics I have to deal with!
This was great! Just followed it step by step to get me going. Cheers!
Great video and straight to the point, will be referencing this. thanks!
Very Helpful, thank you for sharing
just purchased this camera ... thank you so much for this amazing video ... appreciated :)
Sony adicto I agree. i switched from Canon (40 years a pro SLR and DSLR user) to Sony in January 2017, and happy I did. Coming from Nikon and Canon there is small learning curve but once you set up your menu and custom buttons and functions you can pretty much forget the menu. It is all well worth it for the features and image quality of these cameras. Their menus are bigger because the cameras do more, simple as that. Cheers. BTW I own A6500, A7RIII and new A7III and love them for my professional and personal use.
Good work. Quick and to the point. A perfect primer to get me started after being used to Canon FF. I am sure I can step off into more advanced and personal settings once I become more familiar with the Sony way of doing things.
I am using it for over a week now and I LOVE IT! I was shooting with Canon 6D, and bought this one. For the first 3 days it was really awkward, but after I use it for one week I tried the Canon 6D again and I felt light I am using some ancient piece of camera. The A7 feel super intuitive after I spend 3 or 4 hours of learning the Menu and the way it works. I absolutely love it!
me too. I have 2x Canon 6Ds. a few days with the a7iii (only taking practice shots before my first pro job with it on Saturday), and the 6D seems like an slug-like thing from yester-decade.. the a7iii basically has night vision and the AF is amazing....i think i may have to sell all my Canon gear, get a second A7iii and another lens to be honest! the f2.8 24-70 GM is great so far..
Same here and totally agree. I also tested out the very inexpensive 24-240mm Sony lens for travel. I have G lenses too but I was blown away by this lens simply used on full auto for fast shooting on a vacation. Amazing quality. Just the a7iii and one all-purpose lens ... holiday heaven for me.
I was at our local camera shop with my son and I was asking about the trade-in value of my 6D when my son asked what camera I would trade it in on. I said the Sony a7III.. He said "Father's day is coming up and I want you to have the camera you want"... so he bought it for me on the spot. Goodbye to my 6D and hello to a shiny new a7III. This video helped me to set it up and I have to say it's a phenomenal camera!!
Excellent video. Thank you. I just received my a7 iii yesterday, and I am enjoying it very much!
Thanks so much. Really helped understandin how to navigate and understand the menu.
It helped me a lot. Keep up the good work Jarred. Greetings from Poland.
This information was helpful, Jared, thanks.
Great video thanks, had this camera a few days now and getting to know how things work after owning Nikon’s up till now. This video has saved me hours. Love the Sony so far, definitely a good move . 👍
Just bought a used one today.. so incredibly helpful. Thank you!
great video man! just picked up the camera and this video helped me a lot!
Thanks Fro. just got the Sony 7 III. Now I am ready to give it a test tomorrow.
In the video you skipped the ISO Auto Min SS setting. 3 years ago when I bought the camera and watched this video, this is how I learned the settings. Today I discovered ISO Auto Min. SS setting. You could have saved me this 3 years :D
Thanks, Jared! Just in time, I am sitting at my desk with my A7 III at the moment.
Thank you! This video helped me understand my new camera quite a bit better.
Thanks for the crash course tour. That was super helpful.
Most Enjoyable video Ive watched in a Long Time!! Thank You!!
