The lead on those songs was Greg Rollie. He was a lead singer for Santana on Black magic woman. He and Niel Schon formed Journey and Steve joined later. He left Journey later and Jonathan Cain became the keyboard player.
4 octaves + 5. A decent range for sure. What sets Steve apart is his ability to stay up in the high tenor range (he is the only counter tenor I've ever heard who doesn't sound like a girl) and, of course, his flawless vocal technique. Plus he was blessed with a voice that SOUNDS beautiful.
The first album with Steve Perry. We noticed, trust me. I was 13, loved loved me some Journey. Saw them in 1979, I was 14, Steve Perry was shocking. He out did his album performances. They were touring for their second album with Steve. Amazing singer. I'll never forget how we went from awe to shock to screaming our lungs. Let's not start on Neal on the guitar, et.
That's Mr. Gregg Rolie, one of the founding members of Journey. I LOVED how he and Steve harmonized together. Steve has said that when he was four years old he was hitting those high notes and his mom would about jump out of her skin.
Agreed. I never used to like Feeling that way, and would always change the station when it was on. But I loved Anytime. Took me years to figure out why I could never hear it from the beginning though. ( Because I always changed the station before it played!)😜😊
I’m thinking that this is the first live performance of Journey after Steve joined the band. The record label was going to drop the band because they weren’t being played on the radio & their manager forced them to listen to the demo tape of Steve. His addition to the band is, as they say, the start of something beautiful! ✌️☮️
@@chaseharlann I stand corrected, Journey’s first live performance with Steve as frontman was in October 1977. Although I didn’t say that I was positive, I should’ve researched before commenting ✌️☮️
I love feeling that way... that guy is Greg Rollie...Greg was Journeys front man (Singer) before Steve...Greg and Neil were in Santana together before journey...Greg sang" black magic women". You might want to check that out... thanks 💜 Doreen from Down Under
This was soon after Steve joined the group. Greg Rolle was the primary vocalist before thus and soon after Steve's arrival, left the band. It's too bad because those 2 voices could have produced magic that would be beyond belief.
Journey was known for their "segue songs", songs that went right from one song right into the next without a break. "Morning Girl/Stay Awhile" from the album "Departure" is also very pretty. I especially love the differences in the two voices---Gregg Rollie and Steve Perry. They harmonize beautifully too. I could probably listen to this and to "Lights" and be perfectly happy.
Announcer Dude went by the stage name of "Wolfman Jack." Back in the day, he was one of the most famous and influential radio DJs. The "Howard Stern" of the 1960s and 70s. The "Guess Who" actually released a song about Wolfman Jack, called "Clap For The Wolfman": ua-cam.com/video/dO8ahHedcnk/v-deo.html
You can't miss Steve Perry's voice, it's pretty singular, plus he has perfect hair, it's an embarrassment of riches. And how's about a little love for the rhythm section, nobody talks them up, but they really hold it down
Neil Schon is a great guitar player simply for the fact that he always puts melody over flash & showboating. You can hear that he has the ability to rip it up but instead plays with taste for the song. Always admired that about him.
You should react to "Forever Right or Wrong (Love's Like a River)", a solo song by Steve Perry that most Journey fans have never heard...and as far as I can tell, no one else has reacted to. It truly shows off Steve's soulful side. If you love harmonies, you'll LOVE this song.
These two songs were always played together on the radio. Gregg Rollie was the lead in these, and I believe he wrote them. Steve became the next lead, when Rollie left.
Any song from the Infinity Album is absolutely the B💥MB!!!! Love ALL of Journey from 1977-1986...but I’m swooned by the early stuff!!! Steve and the boys at their prime. IMO. Timeless...gets me right in the feels...ANYTIME...EVERY TIME.❤️
Old school, Greg Rollie on keys Journey.....Nice ! ❤️🎼🤘😎 don’t ya love that key change ? Uh huh....😃that’s the same Greg Rollie from Santana and that’s how Neil Schindler got to both bands. Neil was a teenager for Evil Ways....meanwhile they got this started then found Steve Perry and boom. Yep.
That's Greg Rollie on the keys and singing. He was keyboard player and singer for Santana but left with Neil Schon to form Journey. Steve Perry didn't join till this album in 1978. Greg did all the singing originally.
Greg Rollie on vocals and keyboards was the original vocalist for Santana.. he sings “Black Magic Woman” and other Santana hits. Guitarist Neil Schon was a guitarist with Santana at the same time.
Can't help but sing along, can ya... 🥰🎶 Greg Rolie is the co-lead on these two songs, and with Guitarist Neil Schon, one of the original members. At this point, Steve was brand-spanking-new to Journey, and they were riding that meteoric rise to success. Greg left for other ventures and was replaced by Jonathan Cain, on keyboard.
Gregg Rolie on keys and lead vocals and Neal Schon on guitar. Gregg and Neal were both in Santana before Journey. Gregg was the singer on Santana’s Black Magic Woman, Evil Ways, etc. Neal joined Santana at 16 after turning down an offer to join Eric Clapton’s band Derek and the Dominoes.
Gregg Rolie was the lead singer for Santana and a cofounder of journey. Steve and Gregg sometimes traded vocals in the early days if perry joining the group. Gregg left journey around 1080 after their departure tour.
The introduction guy was "Wolfman Jack". If you don't know, you better know. lol. He was hugely popular back when I was growing up. He died in '95. He was like the Dick Clark of his time. From Wikipedia: Robert Weston Smith, known as Wolfman Jack, was an American disc jockey. Famous for his gravelly voice, he credited it for his success, saying, "It's kept meat and potatoes on the table for years for Wolfman and Wolfwoman. A couple of shots of whiskey helps it. I've got that nice raspy sound."
Neil and Greg along with Dean Castranovo - did a tour in California 2 or 3 years ago as Journey Through Time - Dean was playing drums and singing the Steve Perry parts - and is the closest to Perry in his prime. Also Greg was the lead singer for Santana - Black Magic Woman, Oye Como Va, Evil Ways, and also founded the Storm with Ross Valory and Steve Smith. Check out I've Got A Lot to Learn About Love
You have to react to Journey Sweet and Simple. Its the most amazing vocal performance. You wont believe what he can do. A different level. Plus great guitar work.
Steve Perry and Greg Rolie...two very different singing styles. Both compliment one another in these songs. Both excellent in their own right. Rolie was lead singer and when he exited the band Steve became the frontman/lead. As others have said, go listen to him in Santana, along with Neil Schon, get your groove on there!
You really need to check out their album Captured. It is a Live album and IMHO the BEST live album ever!!! You feel like you are at the concert and it sounds like a studio album. Check it out!!!
Please check out the Journey concert in Manila with new frontman Arnel Pineda. Journey shopped around for a long time and they found Arnel in youtube and has been the frontman for more than 10 years now. Check out his version of Journey
I'm a new subscriber to you so I'm not yet familiar with all the music you've reacted to. I noted you like the guitar in several Journey songs. Neal Schon joined Santana at the age of 15 then co-founded Journey a few years later. As for Steve, if you love seeing how high he can go, listen to wheel in the sky
The guy who is announcing the band was Wolf Man Jack and the guy on the piano is Greg and Neil Neil the guitarist is for the group Santana Greg started the band Journey after Greg and Neil left Santana
Steve and Gregg Rollie sounded amazing together. But it must have been hard on Gregg to be a great singer himself and be eclipsed by the GOAT. Steve's performance on We Are the World even seemed to rattle the great Daryl Hall, who kept flubbing his lines after each of Steve's perfect takes. And Daryl is a spectacular vocalist...
I can't recommend "Hallelujah" by Pentatonix highly enough. Five singers (one usually beatboxes the percussion but has a beautiful tenor when he sings) that range from an A6 in a counter-tenor to a bass with a Bb1 at the end. The Lead is a baritone that takes over for the bass when he sings lead and the lone woman in the group is an amazing mezzo-soprano.
Your reaction was perfect. Gregg Rolie was playing the keyboard and was lead singer until SP joined the band and took them to new heights. The guitarist is magnificent.
I have some regrets in life. Not seeing Journey live isn't the biggest one, but it ranks up there! I wish Greg Rollie had stayed with the band a bit longer, even though Jon Cain added a lot.
The lead on those songs was Greg Rollie. He was a lead singer for Santana on Black magic woman. He and Niel Schon formed Journey and Steve joined later. He left Journey later and Jonathan Cain became the keyboard player.
The guy introducing them with the cigarette voice…That’s the most famous DJ of the 70’s. Wolf man Jack
Steve and gregg vocals blended so well together wish they had traded vocals more often
The Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack! I watched it every week ❤
The other guy singing is Greg Rollie. He was the original singer & keyboardist. Came over from Santana with Neil Schon (lead guitar).
This is the best Journey line up
agreed..
His voice is not a falsetto; it’s his range. Steve Perry had the most magnificent voice of all male singers.
I dunno, gotta go with Elvis there, Bryan Adams is another- I actually saw Bryan Adams open for Journey in 1983- a truly amazing show
Gregg Rolie was the lead singer of Journey on their first 3 albums before Steve Perry joined the band.
Lot of people don't make the connection that Greg was the lead singer on Black magic woman.p
journey, Jist the same way.
Just the same way

the great Gregg Rolie !!
I keep forgetting about Greg rollie being journey's first singer and always love his voice as much as Steve Perry
Yes!! Very good information for those who don't know.👍👍👍
Wow never knew that about Greg 👍
I got to see Journey in Concert in the 80's after they released their "Escape" Album and Steve Perry's voice was no Joke back then!

Greg Rollie on keyboards/piano. He was replaced by Jonathan Cain who later came from The Babys. Love that bands tune 'Every time I think of You".
Greg Rollie was with Santana. Lead singer on Black magic woman. Left not long after the arrival of Steve. Very talented.
