Exactly, who's better vocally? Who has better legatto? Who has better control of their vibratto? "Run together through the night". People don't even notice that part and the power required. Very few people can pull that off, let alone how easily he does it. It's not just high notes. At times you can "rest" on the high sustained notes if you are doing them correctly..
When Steve sings, “Tell me secrets, oh that make you cry,” I tear up a little every time. Flawless voice, but it’s his tone that makes him unparalleled-not even Freddie, who is my second favorite singer.
Raised on Radio is highly underrated!! He is the voice...I absolutely adore Whitney and discovered him about the same time as I did her. He is the completely package. Once in a century 🔥❤
I agree that Raised on Radio is extremely underrated. Yes, it sounds more like a Steve Perry solo album, but Perry’s vocals are absolutely on point. Two other songs that hit me on this same level are “Happy to Give”, and “It Could’ve Been You”. Great album.
Thank you for reviewing this song. It is often overlooked. Not only is Steve's singing so perfect but his voice has so much power and emotion when he sings. Rolling Stone magazine rated him #76 out of 100? An assessment I disagree with completely. His live singing is just as flawless as anything recorded in the studio. In my book, he is #1. Journey may have replaced him but in my heart ( and ears), he is irreplaceable.
He is not just seemingly effortlessly powerful, he doesn't just doesn't have a unique voice, he's actually singing heavenly unlike people that just try to belt. Well, like you said, superb.
There are unique voices in Rock... Robert Plant, Sammy Hagar, David Coverdale, Rod Stewart... but STEVE PERRY, is the sum of all these vocal sensations, in a single sound... Tuning, extreme highs, mesmerize and feelings that take us on journeys, sound images...he is the VOICE

Well to answer your question. Since 1978 when he joined Journey, probably 50 million people would rank him #1. Tens of millions would rank him in top 5. Tens of millions would say top ten. So many big musicians over the years rank him very high. Hes been loved by so many. Alot of so called critics have given Journey a hard time. Rolling Stone magazine is a complete joke, has trashed so many great bands over the years. They list him at #76 of all time. Which is complete insanity. One of their greatest Hits is like #7 top selling all time, still on billboard charts i think. The fans know whats great. It sounds like you do too. Thats all that matters. He grabs you from the beginning and thats it for life. Hes just so damn special, what can any one say.
I read that too. Rolling Stone, by ranking Steve Perry #76, completely ruined whatever legitimacy they thought they had. Sure, measuring the best singer is mostly subjective, but if anyone doesn’t have Steve Perry in their top 3, it’s a garbage ranking. Power, range, emotion, softness, harmony with others while still standing out as the lead....what doesn’t Steve Perry do well and if you’re not emotional hearing this particular song, then you have no soul or recognition of art. Often times, I find myself just sitting with my eyes close listening to The Voice and smile!!! I love him so much!!! It was his voice that captured my ears before I even knew who The Voice was, back in 1978!!!

I recently saw a UA-cam comment on another video of someone claiming they were at a show on the Raised On Radio Tour at which Steve did sing this song. But I know the common sentiment is that he never did, so I'm not sure if this person is just remembering incorrectly, or if he actually did sing it once and it has been lost to time... 🤔

I hate to say it, but I’ve listened to shows from that tour, and he was really struggling with his voice at times by that point. He was burned out and walked away before the tour was finished. I sometimes wonder if “Be Good To Yourself” was a cry for help. I think attempting something this difficult would’ve been tough on that tour. That’s one reason why I tend to believe he didn’t do it live. No disrespect to Perry. He’ll always be the king. Fun fact: Steve did reunite with Johnathan Cain and Neal Schon one last time for a few songs at a festival in San Francisco in 1991, and that’s the last time he sang with Journey live.

I don't think anyone can put a finger on his superlative voice..range and emotion...I've watched these videos where they comment...what he does is incomparable IMHO.. I'm 73 and I was a male soprano choirboy in the royal school of church music..many moons ago ...it saddens me that he was put under so much pressure to perform constantly and concistently....i choke up when I hear him sing.
If you want to listen to an entire album, why not start with Journey’s Infinity album? It’s the first album that Steve recorded with Journey. It’s still my favorite Journey album, even after 42 years, probably because it was on it that I first heard Steve’s voice. Patiently is my favorite song off that album, and also my favorite Journey song. It’s the first song that Steve co-wrote with lead guitarist Neal Schon for Journey. Thank you thank you thank - I have been begging some of my usual haunting spots to listen to a couple of Journey's songs that havent been done a thousand times. Still They Ride was the one I requested the most - I will go check that out. But this one is IMO a masterpiece of his vocal talent. From the same album: "Happy to Give" is breathtaking from hearing his vocals, and In "The Eyes of a Woman" is also so beautiful. These songs are not reacted to elsewhere (much) nor played on the radio and is a shame - they are gorgeous tracks.
Love your honest reaction to Steve Perry and journey. Amazing thing is they could have finished this song out with Neil's guitar, you hear it, but Steve ad-libs those notes at the end. That's not written down on a sheet of paper. That's what Steve did he would add lid the endings with those high-ranging notes

Probably my favorite Journey album is Escape, 1981, Steve is absolutely at his peak, particularly in “Keep On Running” and “Lay it Down.” This song is one of the two best from the Raised on Radio album, you gotta check out “Happy to Give.” I love your Journey reactions, I’ve been reacting that way to Steve for about 15 years, hasn’t gotten any less impressive.
For me it’s Steve and Freddie. Freddie had the operatic, showman style, and Steve had that bluesy, R&B style, like a rock Sam Cooke. They are 1A and B to me in no particular order. But when it comes to my personal taste, Perry is my favorite ever.

I have to agree his voice is like silk. I have loved this man and his voice for so many years (almost 40 yrs). And he is still amazing today.

I love this absolutely wonderful song with Steve, the voice, nobody sings like he does straight to your heart and you fly away. Journey with him were so great and perfect, such a shame that it fell apart.
