The live version from Houston is absolutely stunning. You even get to hear and see Steve hit those soaring high notes towards the end. Those are not guitar notes as some believe..he does it live and spot on.
Professor, considering the actual length of prime activity of the band with Steve Perry as the lead vocalist, Journey's success in the music world is truly phenomenal and its longevity truly remarkable. Without counting the band's practical hiatus and the brief final comeback in 1996, the actual number of years for the band's peak was less than a decade. Can you imagine what kind of monstrous band it would've become had they stayed together another 5 to 10 years and recorded 3 to 4 more studio albums and toured for them? I have very little doubt that they would have become as big or bigger than the likes of The Stones or Zeppelin.
wow 😯 ... yes, can you just imagine that 🤔 ?? ... that's mind-blowing !! ... they really MIGHT have become bigger than Zeppelin or the Stones with Steve's powerful vocals 🎤 and with Neal's blistering guitar 🎸 solos ... but alas, it was just not meant to be 😕 ...... I've heard new songs 🎶 from them are also to be released sometime soon ... good things to come from both fronts !!! 💜💜💜🎶🎤🎶💜💜💜
@@debbieminton9589 Yes, the endurance of Journey's popularity is remarkable. But it's not surprising because the fans never could get enough of the music from the band even when they were struggling internally in the 80s. I think the combination and chemistry they had together were simply magical and timeless. While I don't think they'll exactly relive their heyday, I'm sure they will keep the legacy alive for some years to come.
Mother, Father has always been my favorite "unsung" Journey song. When you said that was your #1, I literally yelled out, "yes!" Great video Professor!

It is so satisfying to finally see and hear people studying the talent of Journey as band and as individuals. Steve Perry, a gift of superior singing ability, given to the world to enjoy. An opera singer in rock and roll.
Mother Father was my favorite song from the escape album. The first time I heard it, I was blown away by Steve’s vocal ability. I would listen to it loud through my headphones and it gave me chills every single time!
One of my favourite bands. I loved Escape so much I wore out my cassette. I need to get it back in some form. Not only does Steve have outstanding vocal range but, he sings with such emotion. This is why he is one of my favourite male singers.
I did not know that Steve Perry did mother father in one take. In my opinion that just adds to the epicness of it and how awesome a prime Steve Perry really was. I wish I could have seen them live back then.
Same here!...I was a couple years too young to have been able to see them and eventhough I was just starting to play drums, guitar and sing at 11 or so, I could have never been able to absorb and understand the awesomeness of journey and Steve Perry
I saw them live 4 times...because they came to Jackson , Tenn. twice before they headlined, its kinda small compared to Memphis or Nashville , then in each of those cities thereafter.
My all time favorite band. I appreciate that some of the guys are still playing and Arnel does a great job, but Steve Perry was a generational voice - he will forever be Journey to me. Damn what an artist.
Journey with Steve Perry, was and is my favorite band of all time. I wanted to see them live for years, but my mom was a single mom and could never afford for me to go to any concert. It wasn't until I was 18 years old that I finally found a way to go see them in concert in Houston Texas for their Raised on Radio tour, it was epic and felt like a dream come true! The Summit (Now Lakewood Church) was packed full and I got to see my favorite band for my very first concert in my life. I really love all their music, I almost forgot about these songs you mentioned but the words immediately came back to me soon as you played the licks. Thank you for bringing back some great memories for me.
One of my favorite Journey deep cuts has always been Edge of the Blade. Neal's solo is incredible, and Perry absolutely kills it with the hard rock style.
Great job recognizing Mother Father, always my favorite, amazing vocals. This was actually the B Side of the first single Whos Crying Now, when I brought the single home and played Mother Father to see what it sounded like I was blown away, definitely Steve & Neals finest moment.

Through the years I have grown to admire and appreciate the band Journey. With all the changes Neal has been the rock to which the band stays strong. Music talent along the way made the band iconic. The one and only “The Voice” need I say more. To add Jonathan Cain addition was like getting a power hitting catcher who does just about everything. Each change gave the band a different tone but the core has always been Neal. Awesome job on this video. I’m looking forward to seeing them live.
The stories behind the songs is fascinating. Why is Journey the greatest band of all time? Each member is a talented musician and vocalist. Sadly, bands and singers, like Journey, don’t exist today. Steve Perry’s vocal range is unbelievable and splendid! It’s no surprise they only needed one take in the studio….no sweeteners needed. In closing, their songs are meaningful: Memories come flooding back reminding you of that period in life when each song was released.
48 YEAR FAN of JOURNEY and counting! Admire any band that can endure " band member changes", " Who owns the band name", Touring NONSTOP, and continuing to create and record new music 🎶 THANK U ARNEL for continuing the JOURNEY LEGACY since 2007. Hats off much respect to Steve Aujeri and Jeff Scott Soto Much love and adulation to ROBERT FLEISCHMAN...you still ROCK! And to the GREATEST ROCK SINGER ON PLANET EARTH.... ***WE MISS YOU STEVE PERRY***
I just saw yr video ... great top 5 hidden gems of Journey! Gives me goosebumps hearing all 5 songs even to this day. The Escape album was truly one of their best if not the best! Vocals and musicianship were top notch! Steve was truly the Voice, Neal was the guitar god, Jonathan the keyboard specialist, and Steve Smith held them together ...
The genius of journey the melody the melting between the guitar of Neal Schon and Steve Perry will never be matched, this was a great Journey segment Keep them coming
What a class act production of a video. Professor Rock you did an outstanding job presenting the information and epic history of the greatest band of the modern age Journey. I was blessed to grow up in the 70s and 80's being born in 1971 and I can tell you, having that music in my living memory when it was new and first released on the radio and as a cassette that I practically wore out... is something I have and will always cherish. In the last 30 years of my life I have heard some good music but I have yet to hear a band or a singer that even comes close to the likes of Journey and Steve Perry... Bravo Professor, Bravo

I was 7 when my parents bought Journey's Greatest hits, even though it had already been out for a decade. I don't know if there's a single album that captures as much nostalgia as it does for me. The artwork, the songs, everything. Every single song is an absolute classic and I could just sit and listen to it for hours.
Mother Father has been one of my favorite Journey songs. It has personal meaning for me and I get choked up when I hear it. Steve’s amazing vocals and Neal’s searing guitar...
When I think back about my teen years Journey is the background to every great memory. I felt that Journey didn't get the respect they deserved in the past and I'm so glad that the world seems to have come around to the true greatness that is Journey. The best live shows ever- Steve Perry somehow sounded better live. Neil Schon smoked the guitar and the energy of the band lifted stadium packed crowds. I can't pick my top 5 hidden gems because I'm too big a fan- I can listen to every song no skips going on 35 plus years.
Journey will always have a special place in my heart. When I was a teenager in the mid-2000s, I was utterly obsessed with them and knew their back catalogue inside-out. I would do godawful covers of their songs on UA-cam when it was still relatively new. 😅 This was before it was cool to start liking 80s AOR bands again, certainly here in the UK, haha. At the time, I was living in a town I hated and longed to move back to my hometown on the other side of the country. When I was 17 I finally had the chance to bail, the first song I listened to on my way there was "Escape" and I still get chills thinking about how alive it made me feel. Thank you Prof for bringing back all those fond memories of one of my big teenage musical loves! ❤️

Journey has been so underrated for so long but people are really starting to revisit some older music and have realized just how special they akways were. The trio of Steve, Neal, and John are in a class all by themselves. In my opinion, the best ever!! Steve Perry is THE voice!! Ridiculous how good he is... Journey will always be my #1
"Separate Ways" haunts me to this day. I first heard it/watched on MTV just a day or two after seeing my first "girlfriend" (never a committed thing, but we had a close friendship) for the first time in over a year in '83. The song just made me say, "Yes, we did, "touch and went our separate ways". We still have a great friendship all these years later. Yet, the song takes me back to Summer '83 and the "*gasp* Look who's here!" moment. Love that song. Great video Prof! Hard to pick a 'bad' Journey song...

I completely agree with your #1. Mother Father is one of my favorite Journey songs. Every time I listen to it it’s cranked up and I sing along with abandoned. 😁
Still they ride...... that song is soooo important to me on many levels, I remember when I heard it for the first time and it just blew me away on how deeply it touched me and mirrored how I felt at that time.
The recording in one take of Steve Perry's vocal for the song Mother Father, is mind-blowing. One of my favorite songs from Escape, as if I could pick just one from this album. I remember buying Escape and Judas Priest's Screaming for Vengeance from my newspaper route money when I was 13 in 1982. I recorded both albums onto cassette and played them in my Walkman everywhere I went that year. Both albums were/are multi-generational masterpieces of amazing music.

One of my favorite songs I can't get enough of is 'The Party's Over'. I also think their best live song is 'Escape'. 'Patiently' has a great story behind it. I would love to hear what they remember about it. Great video!
Great choices. 👍 A lot of people don't remember that Escape, Foreigner 4 and Hi Infidelity all came out at about the same time... Talk about an awesome time for rock fans!!!
Steve Perry is the most perfect rock voice ever. People who try and claim they are still as good with Pineda are just delusional. Pineda is a nice singer, but he is no Steve Perry and never will be
Thank you for doing this episode. Journey is my favorite band of all time. Many memories of my youth. "Still They Ride" and "Mother, Father" are in my top songs from them and have always been. Phenomenal singing, lyrics and music. The best!
Eerie how similar our tastes are. Mother Father, the solos, that insane high note at the end, it is one of the best songs ever made. Send Her My Love is still my favorite Journey song though.
Raised on Radio was Journey’s best album in my honest opinion, so rich in musical dynamics and the production was crystal clear yet still had warmth thanks to Randy Jackson’s funky bass. Suzanne is my favourite journey song.
Everyone has their opinions that are valid to them. Mine is Frontiers, and that is the right answer. For me. RoR is great for being all over the place, genre wise.
I’ve been heard it said that some consider “Raised On Radio” to be Steve’s “unofficial” 2nd solo album, as he was calling so many of the shots. Bringing on a new Bassist & Drummer that could give him more of an R&B feel and such. Can’t say they’re wrong, it was a bit of a departure (pun intended) from “Escape” & “Frontiers”. It will always be my favorite album as it’s the first Journey album that I dove into head first for the first time. I was certain aware of the other hit songs, especially “Faithfully”, but that album was the first one I’d sit and listen to from beginning to end…then do it again….and again.
You know when most people interview amazing people like you do, they fail to ask the most important deep questions a lot of us ALWAYS wanted to ask. You sir do that. When you asked Neal about the licks in Still, They Ride, I also wondered about who came up with what and thought I would never know. Until now. Thank you for your work
I love Gregg Rolie on the Hammond B3 organ just oozing with blues on Walks Like A Lady. Especially when Rolie, Schon and Perry interplay their respective instruments live.
I'll Be Alright Without You is perfection. I love everything about that song. The vocals are great even by Journey standards. Niel's guitar at the end is an underappreciated solo.
I'll be alright without you. Is an anthem in my own soundtrack. And I will never forget the first time I heard the song. It involved the video and a Moosehead beer, neither disappointed.
I sing in a band that will occasionally do Journey tributes. I just recently asked the band to say which one of our tribute songs they liked the best. 100% of us named “Mother Father”. It’s an absolutely INCREDIBLE song!!
It's hard to limit it to a top five, but one song I love that most people pass over is "After the Fall", a song that I think showcased just how good the unerrated Steve Smith is on drums!

Perry’s live version of “Mother Father” is even better live which is total mind boggling. He’s definitely a “once in a lifetime singer” as even Schon said during RRHOF speech.
I was fortunate to see Journey in 1980 in Las Cruces, NM. After 42 years I was convinced to see them with the new singer....not the same. You cannot compare. Steve Perry's awesome soulful voice is the VOICE of Journey.
There’s a reason that Steve is truly my favorite rock vocalist of all time. His vocals are truly on another level. Goosebump inducing level. I can still remember hearing Wheel in The Sky when it originally came out while I was in college, and how much, even then, I loved his voice. Over the ensuing years and decades, I only came to love it more. He just makes it all look so effortless.
I’ve seen this episode so many times. I love Journey, during the Steve Perry era. It’s like watching one of your favorite movies over and over. Steve THE VOICE Perry!!!!! PHENOMENAL!!!
My dad bought all the new Journey albums starting in the early 80's, it was his favorite band then. He also turned me on to bands like Toto, Little River Band too...I was into hard rock and metal back then, but I've always loved Journey! So much so I've seen Journey play live twice with him and my mom.
Sounds like your dad and I have similar taste! I'm 59 now, also loved Kansas, Styx, Boston, Fergie Fredricksen in LeRoux. I saw Journey in 80, 81, 86, 05 and 1 other later time. I was in the Journey Force fan club, only way to get the inside scoop back then!
@@michaelfried3123 Nope, English is my first language. Maybe...nope, no maybe, definitely your IQ is sub 100, you don't understand sarcasm. Maybe learn punctuation... and get a sense of humor while you're at it.
We share the same passion for Journey. I love so much from the Gregg Rolie/Steve Perry era. Two deep cuts are “Homemade Love” and “Precious Time” one features Steve Smith’s impeccable groove and the other Neil Schon’s prowess!
For the 70's video, without question Somethin' to Hide has to place high on the list. This is the band at its deep track best, Steve Perry at the very height of his vocal power. Not just one of Journey's best, one of the best, period.
I agree, some of these songs are great! The song "I'll Be Alright Without You" is one of my favorite Journey songs, like he said they never play it. The radio stations only play "Don't Stop Believin'", "Open Arms", "Separate Ways", and "Faithfully", they never play any of their other songs!
Can’t argue with Mother Father nor Escape. I think there is a case for Send Her My Love which is often overshadowed by Open Arms, Whose Crying now and Faithfully. Send her my Love is ridiculously melancholy and moving even before Steve Perry starts. And the live version is even better ditto The Party’s Over. Great video and keep up your passion.
"Lights" is my favorite Journey song because of a great memory of listening to it while coming off the mountain just outside of our little city. It was a beautiful sight, something that we never even thought of before hearing that song. We just took our surroundings for granted, something I never do now even in the dryness of the Sonoran Desert.
Absolutely love Raised on Radio. I'll be Alright and Girl can't help it are two of my favorites. The live version of Girl Can't help it has unbelievable vocals

Raised on Radio is definitely in their top 3 albums. Whole album is good. My favorites on the album are "Positive Touch," "It Could Have Been You," and "Why Can't This Night..."
Ok. My ‘hidden gem,’ from Journey’s history, and one that frankly, I am surprised you did not mention at all is “The Party’s Over.” On this song, Neil Schon belts out one of the most amazing introductions that I have ever heard! This song is non-stop phenomenal from start to finish.

It is so satisfying to finally see and hear people studying the talent of Journey as band and as individuals. Steve Perry, a gift of superior singing ability, given to the world to enjoy. An opera singer in rock and roll.
Perry pumped "home runs" - with his extraordinary, stratospheric, voice range!
It seemed he could hit grandslams, even without anyone else on base, vocally.
I’ve always loved Who’s Crying Now. The arrangement is so cool.
One of my very favorites!!
Just want to say Neal is an awesome guitarist !! He and Steve together was a joy to my ears.I listen Journey and Steve (solo ) everyday. !!!
"Still They Ride" should have been / still could be ... an awesome theme song for a great movie!
Neal Schon could turn "Mary Had a Little Lamb" into a blistering guitar solo!
SRV already did.
Thanks
Neal is a very, very underrated guitarist. He is sooo good!
My favorite band. I agree with you! Mother, Father that last high note by Steve is all the feels.🎶❤️
Live in Houston is one take too, and may be better than the studio version.
I saw them for the Departure, Escape, Frontiers and Raised on Radio tours. It was all glorious!!
My all time favorite band. I appreciate that some of the guys are still playing and Arnel does a great job, but Steve Perry was a generational voice - he will forever be Journey to me. Damn what an artist.
It's hard to believe that Steve nailed Mother Father in one take. Wow.
Impressive!
Steve is an amazing Icon. There is only one STEVE PERRY.
Wonder how many it would take deen castronova to do it while playing drums!
@@paulwojnilowicz5265Deen is freaking incredible
I can totally believe it, it's Steve Freakin Perry!
Still they Ride is one of my favorite Journey songs of all time. The memories and the story behind it... Thank you Adam!
One of my favorite deep tracks is definitely “Happy To Give” from Raised on Radio. Steve Perry’s vocal, that huge production...*chef’s kiss*
This song is fantastic! Pure soul and feelings. Good choice!
Story has it that Perry recorded the vocal for that song by the dozens...he always thought of Happy to Give as his “baby.”
Steve Perry has a best rock voice EVER!
Thanks for this video. Steve Perry is my favorite rock vocalist.
Wheel in the Sky is one of my favorite Journey Songs.
The vocals are amazing
My 18 yr old son loves that song
"Wheel in the Sky" is my favorite song of all time.
Mother Father is one of my favorite Journey songs. Steve's voice was so incredible it doesn't surprise me one bit that he got the song in one take.
Definitely can't forget " I 'm crying " Steve is absalutely amazing on this one.

And the problem with their catalog is it shreds the vocal cords!
48 YEAR FAN of JOURNEY and counting!
Admire any band that can endure " band member changes", " Who owns the band name", Touring NONSTOP, and continuing to create and record new music 🎶
THANK U ARNEL for continuing the JOURNEY LEGACY since 2007.
Hats off much respect to Steve Aujeri and Jeff Scott Soto
Much love and adulation to ROBERT FLEISCHMAN...you still ROCK!
"Stone In Love", "Girl Can't Help It", "Where Were You", "Only the Young", "Send Her My Love"
The genius of journey the melody the melting between the guitar of Neal Schon and Steve Perry will never be matched, this was a great Journey segment Keep them coming
Steve Perry is truly a legend with that Voice. He’s got the best voice even now!! 🎤🎶🎶♥️
I love all things Journey....even cheesy videos from 80s but I just can't do any lineup other than original with Steve 💗🕊️

I was 7 when my parents bought Journey's Greatest hits, even though it had already been out for a decade. I don't know if there's a single album that captures as much nostalgia as it does for me. The artwork, the songs, everything. Every single song is an absolute classic and I could just sit and listen to it for hours.
I have to agree! My husband bought it for me for Xmas, and it was in my 6 disc player for years!
I can't pick
my top 5 hidden gems because I'm too big a fan- I can listen to every song no skips going on 35 plus years.

Patiently... One in a MILLION. That is my favorite seldom-heard Journey masterpiece.
I completely agree with your #1. Mother Father is one of my favorite Journey songs. Every time I listen to it it’s cranked up and I sing along with abandoned. 😁
It's a classic for sure.
My favorite hidden gem is "Why Can't This Night..."
Perry's vocals are just unbelievable.
Absolutely!!!! That song gives me chills!!!! ❤❤❤❤
Our wedding song
Still They Ride , one of my favorites. Steve reaches out with his vocals and penetrates your soul. It’s crazy.
Still they ride...... that song is soooo important to me on many levels, I remember when I heard it for the first time and it just blew me away on how deeply it touched me and mirrored how I felt at that time.
Glad I was able to see them in the 80's when they were at their best!
“Still They Ride” is one of my all time favorites by Journey. Steve Perry’s vocals and Neil Schon’s guitar is just Epic for me. Great Tune!
This Greatest Hits album played on our morning alarm for the entirety of our children's childhoods. They are now Journey fans for life!
Steve did the vocals on Mother Father in one take! No surprise.

One of my favorite songs I can't get enough of is 'The Party's Over'. I also think their best live song is 'Escape'. 'Patiently' has a great story behind it. I would love to hear what they remember about it. Great video!
I agree about "The Party ...". Staccato guitar punctuated with bass and drum punches right along with the vocals.
Yes, "The Party's Over" is great. Can't get enough of that song too🎶😊
Incredible song!
Patiently is amazing, like you said especially because of the story behind it.
GREAT choice at #1. "Mother Father" is my favorite "gem" from them of all time, too.
Great choices. 👍
A lot of people don't remember that Escape, Foreigner 4 and Hi Infidelity all came out at about the same time... Talk about an awesome time for rock fans!!!
Steve Perry is the most perfect rock voice ever. People who try and claim they are still as good with Pineda are just delusional. Pineda is a nice singer, but he is no Steve Perry and never will be
Perry loon alert.
@@jamesrudd8705 is that the one on the Canadian dollar coin?
Dusional!! Absolutely
Bugs me too … Steve is in a whole different level. Pineda keeps Journey on the road, PERIOD.

🤦🏻♀️
Man, I couldn’t say it’s the best album, but surely it’s the album I listened the most. I really love it.
Their worst album by far. Cheesy 80s pop garbage.
You know when most people interview amazing people like you do, they fail to ask the most important deep questions a lot of us ALWAYS wanted to ask. You sir do that. When you asked Neal about the licks in Still, They Ride, I also wondered about who came up with what and thought I would never know. Until now. Thank you for your work
Neal is one of my all time favorite guitarist! He’s just the greatest!!❤️🎸
Journey comforted me through some very tough times in my life !!! They will always have a place on my record player and in my heart !!!
I love Gregg Rolie on the Hammond B3 organ just oozing with blues on Walks Like A Lady. Especially when Rolie, Schon and Perry interplay their respective instruments live.
Journeys music and lyrics affect me emotionally, just the beauty of it brings tears
❤️⚡️💯🎶 ”I’ll be alright without you”! One of my all time fav bands
Can you believe it's been forty years? Like the Professor says---This great music is timeless.
One of my favorites!
Still They Ride has always been one of my favorite Journey songs. You're right Professor, a very moving song.

I remember the first time I heard "wheel in the sky" it was at a planetarium Lazer show in 1973.

We share the same passion for Journey. I love so much from the Gregg Rolie/Steve Perry era. Two deep cuts are “Homemade Love” and “Precious Time” one features Steve Smith’s impeccable groove and the other Neil Schon’s prowess!
Such a major part of my late teens and early 20s! Journey was part of an era that was fun and bittersweet.
For the 70's video, without question Somethin' to Hide has to place high on the list. This is the band at its deep track best, Steve Perry at the very height of his vocal power. Not just one of Journey's best, one of the best, period.
His falsetto on that song... Damn!
Steve was at his best on Infinity, I believe. He was great on all of their albums, but I think on Infinty his voice was at its purest.
Mother Father is my all time favorite Journey song. It’s amazing from first note to last! 🤘🏻
Absolutely love Raised on Radio. I'll be Alright and Girl can't help it are two of my favorites. The live version of Girl Can't help it has unbelievable vocals

Ok. My ‘hidden gem,’ from Journey’s history, and one that frankly, I am surprised you did not mention at all is “The Party’s Over.” On this song, Neil Schon belts out one of the most amazing introductions that I have ever heard! This song is non-stop phenomenal from start to finish.
