Greg was the lead singer for Santana before helping form Journey with Neal Schon. At this point, Steve was the backup singer 🙂 Love Greg's voice but Steve is on another level. Great harmony ❤️
I grew up watching the Midnight Special as a kid..my parents would be drinking whisky and rye and playing cards, smoking cigarettes partying with their friends..and us kids all 10 of us would watch this show....Sooo many great performances hard to pick a favorite
No Neal isn’t on that track on the album. He was hanging with the band during Abraxas but didn’t join or record with them until Santana III. However, there are videos of Neal playing on Black Magic Woman, but it was after the album was released.
Oh my God! Wolfman Jack doing the intro. I had totally forgotten about him. Sorry funny to see! Don't know these songs at all. Steve Perry. Sweet Jesus! What a voice! Unmistakable!
I’m so happy you guys gave Gregg his props for vocals. A sweet guy who volunteered to leave the band and let Perry shine. My favorite Journey album because of Gregg’s contribution ms
The entire Infinity album is incredible. Gregg Rolie (keys) and Steve Perry are amazing together. Neal Schon pronounced “Shawn” on guitar. All amazing. Neal Schon is the founding member. Played with Santana at age 15. Totally self-taught. Neal is 68 years old now and still ripping that guitar in Journey today. They are getting ready to celebrate their 50 year as a band. Pretty incredible I’d say. Forever fan here. React to Winds of March from that same Infinity album.
Schon might be the most underappreciated guitarist in rock. His pieces are a master class in composition. And listen to his performance of this solo compared to the recorded version. They differ byONE note. That is really tough to do.
I'll admit I didn't know it at the time, but both Greg Rolle and Neal Schon (it's a German name meaning beautiful, more or less) came from Carlos Santana's band.
There are great bands out there today...BUT...they are not on the radio. It is a crying shame. The 70's and 80's were the sweet spot for rock and roll. Journey was on the pinnacle.
At this point, Steve was the lead singer, but Gregg - being the former lead - would share leads with Steve on a few songs until he left in 1980. Listen to the live album Captured. You will be amazed at how great these guys were live.
The hosts name is Wolfman Jack. He was a huge DJ in the 1970's.This was days of terrestrial radio. Wolfman had his radio station located in Mexico to bypass the sensors in the United States.
All of us oldtimers watched Midnight Special. LOL Graduated in the '70's so Midnight Special was the show you had to see for all the bands that were hot at the time. Also, once the Midnight Special was over, the TV went off the air until morning. We didn't have shows on TV 24 hours a day back then.
For those too young to know, one of the greatest moments in rock history occurs during this song at 3:36 when Greg Rolie figuratively passes the torch to Steve Perry. Two seconds before, we were collectively holding our breath...could the new guy sing? Any doubt was completely smashed and destroyed within the next ten seconds - Steve Perry instantly ascended to the greatest male vocalist ever recorded. Dream Duo: Greatest male & female vocalists ever recorded, together: Steve Perry & Karen Carpenter, produced by Richard Carpenter. An unusual idea that’s never been considered but I think it would stun. Technically possible as Richard still controls the Carpenters’ catalog.
The host I believe was a guy who also had a show on the radio, his name was The Wolfman🤔 This is my favorite Journey song! It’s very often overlooked but it’s killer!
Never missed The Midnight Special . We were treated to a concert every Friday night , featuring multiple bands / performers . Man alive, what memories . Nice reaction guys, as usual. Y'all's love of music is a joy to watch. You gotta listen to the original album versions. Songs play back to back with a very short break between them. Even shorter than the break in this performance. A great radio experience. The DJ's always played both songs . They sort of had to, I guess , with technology being in it's relatively early stages back then. Radio listeners were spoiled . And we loved it .
Soooooo many times I fell asleep trying to stay up to watch this show, missed a lot, was just a kid...😴 Greg Rolie and Neal Schon formed Journey after departing Santana, later Jonathan Cain came aboard on keyboards. Maybe Santana's "Black Magic Woman" is where you heard his voice and Neal with Carlos on 🎸!! 🔥🔥🔥
"The Host" is the legendary Wolfman 🐺 Jack, maybe the greatest radio 📻 DJ of all-time. He did cartoon voicework, too, I believe, what with his unique voice, and also stars as himself (sorta) in the film 🎥 American Graffiti.
Wife here...This is my Husband's FAVORITE song!!...It's so cool to hear you guys referencing "Stadium Rock"...We call it "Arena Rock"...Your Reactions are totally Awesome..!!!👍💯😎
Yes, boys, Rolie and Schon come from Santana, Aynsley Dunbar, drums w Frank Zappa, others. This band was STACKED! Ross Valory bass man. Steve Perry could have learned a little rhythm guitar….
I lived in Los Angeles for 30 years, and I worked retail management in a wealthy area, so celebrities would come into the store frequently. One day, I looked over, and there was Steve Perry at the front of the line waiting to be rung up. In my head I was like, "Hey, Steve Perry. Cool! Wow, he's shorter than I thought." I'd say he was/is 5' 7", maybe 5' 8", tops, which I never would have guessed from all the MTV videos I'd seen. And there you have it, another brush with greatness from my early days (this was 20 years ago, roughly).
Greg Rollie on the keys. He was the lead singer before Perry joined the band. When he quit, the keyboard player for the band Baby's, Jonathan Cain, took his place.
I do love me some Journey so thanks for your reaction guys! If you'd like to hear another great live performance try "Mother, Father" from their Houston 1981 concert.
Okay, so here's the story. Gregg Rolie was the keyboardist / Organ player and singer for Santana from 1969 til the end of 1971. Guitarist Neal Schon was briefly in Santana as the second Guitarist, Gregg and Neal went to do their own thing in 1973, and Journey released three albums as a four piece, Journey (1975), Look Into The Future (1976) and Next (1977), they were a huge selling live act, but their records didn't sell much, all great albums, but more fusion rock / Prog Rock, their record company, Columbia, told them, "write catchier songs, and get a singer or we are dropping you", Hence Steve Perry was found and joined the band. Gregg continued to sing one to two songs at each Perry album Infinity (1978), Evolution (1979), and Departure (1980), after the live album Captured (1981) was mixed, and before their soundtrack effort Dream After Dream (1980) in Japan was released, Gregg left at the start of 1981, and Jonathan Cain from The Baby's was brought in. Jon helped create their juggernaut "Escape" in 1981, the rest is history.
Perry’s vocals are amazing on the three Dream After Dream songs that have vocals, so, no, most Perryites don’t hate it. And this particular Perry fan was over the moon to get a copy of it on vinyl.
Greg Rolie. Original singer til Steve came in, Journey needed something to the next level in their band. Steve was the answer. Greg stayed awhile, then left the band on his own. Wish Greg would've stated. His voice compliments Steves very well. This album & Escape. My favorites.
You guys are cool as shit! Saw Journey live several times. Great Show! Watched the Midnight Special every week religiously. Rock On My Younger Brothers from a Different Mother!
The guy playing the piano is Greg Rolie..him and Neal school are the bands founders..journey was formed like 4 or 5 years before steve perry joined the band..after steve joined Greg was only on 2 albums, infinity and evolution..
Dude you got to remember the Midnight Special was all we had for music other than Bandstand and in Britain top of the pops in the old gray whistles test
Greg Rolie was a lead singer in Santana and Neal Schon played as a teenager with Carlos Santana. The rest of the band had more members from different California bands but eventually, Steve Perry came later after his band broke up due to a bandmember's death.
These two songs are still played back to back on St Louis KSHE-95! Gregg was lead singer, their manager brought in Steve Perry to sell more albums. He eventually took over all lead, of course. Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie are the founding members of Journey. They both played with Santana before that. Neal was playing guitar at the age of 14 with Santana. Yes, his solos are on the albums as well. This is my favorite era of Journey.
Gregg Rolie was a founding member of Journey along with Neal Schon (pronounced Shawn). Greg was a founding member of Santana (vocals on Black Magic Woman, Evil Ways) and Neal was also briefly a Santana bandmate. The young guitar prodigy had a choice between joining Santana or Eric Clapton's band. Later he and Rolie left Santana to form Journey to pursue a more progressive jazz/rock fusion style. Rolie was the original lead vocalist until they decided to add a different vocalist and pursue a bit more commercial radio friendly style. When Robert Fleischmann didn't pan out, their manager, Herbie Herbert, suggested and introduced the band to Steve Perry. Infinity was the first release with Perry in the band and still had songs featuring Rolie on vocals and implementing a hybrid approach. For more of this, check out the track "Just the Same Way." Rolie departed the band due to unhappiness with his lifestyle (excessive drinking, etc.) and wanting to tour less to focus on family, but has continued his music career. He was replaced by Jonathan Cain (the Babys). Rolie later formed another melodic rock band The Storm, with other former Journey bandmates and Perry-esque singer Kevin Chalfant. In 1994 he formed Abraxas Pool, going back to his Latin infused roots, similar to Sanatana. He has performed with the Ringo Starr's All-Star Band and currently helms The Gregg Rolie Band. In 2018-19, he and Neal performed a few dates as Journey Through Time, with Journey drummer Deen Castronova handling the Steve Perry vocal role. You can find videos of these performances on UA-cam. Neal has recently opened the door for Journey's upcoming 50th anniversary for Perry, Rolie and potential certain other former members to return in a limited capacity in order to help celebrate the band's milestone. We shall see on Perry as he hasnt performed live much in years, though Rolie would not surprise me. We can hold out hope for even 1 special performance if only for 1 song as a finale. Thank you for reacting to both songs together as it should be.
A story from a few years ago pointed out that Rolie didn't sign away his publishing. For that reason, he'll have to be on board if they want to perform most of their early catalog.
Journey was a prog rock jam band with Greg and Neal. The record label was about to drop them because they couldn't get radio airplay. So they brought in Steve to make them more radio friendly. Greg left a couple of years later. He said that he wanted to spend more time at home. There was much speculation that he didn't like being upstaged by Steve. BTW-Neal resisted bringing Steve into the band, too. Said he didn't think he fit in with the band. 🙂
It should be noted that the first person to leave from this grouping is the drummer, Ansley Dunbar. He'd played with David Bowie and Frank Zappa before joining the embryonic Journey. The year after this, John Barbata, the drummer for Jefferson Starship, was injured in a car crash, and Starship being the kings of the San Francisco music scene, they were able to get Dunbar to "trade up" and join them. But I've also heard tell that Ansley thought these songs were a bit too commercial as opposed to "Kohoutek" and "Of A Feeling" and the earlier Journey stuff. I don't know that for sure, though.
Peter Frampton performing Show Me the Way, Starbuck performing Moonlight Feels Right and Redbone performing Come and Get Your Love on the Midnight Special are great.
It's rare to find true live performances of journey not clips... I don't know may be a copyright issue... with all the legal battles currently going on between cain schon and perry..nothing surprises me now. I think Steve left this band because of that tension. He saw that building up and made his exit and landed one of the best retirement plans in musical history. He gets 30 percent of their touring profit and he can sit home and do what he wants. The best line up was cain scheon and perry thst was the height of their success. But I love rollie with perry... their vocals ranges blended effortlessly... just lovely complemented perfectly. Rollie can sing his little tushy off 😅 And the harmonies these two created just magical ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wolfman Jack was the host that night he introduced Journey. He had the most recognizable voice in the 70s and 80s. R.I.P. Wolfman
I worked at a radio station in the 80s and he came in several times. He was so nice..
The Guess Who's Clap for the Wolfman has him in it.
I remember Wolfman Jack from Mungo Jerry
That guy is Greg Rolle. He had platinum selling records with 3 different bands in three different decades.
I was a teenager watching midnight special with wolfman Jack and journey I love you❤❤❤ I'm 60 years old and I still rocking ❤
Greg was the lead singer for Santana before helping form Journey with Neal Schon. At this point, Steve was the backup singer 🙂 Love Greg's voice but Steve is on another level. Great harmony ❤️
Neal Schon was in Santana too
Steve wasn't just the backup singer. He sang lead on most of the songs on this album.
@@Irockthere4 16 years old Neal was, Gregg brought him in.
Ross and Aynsley were also from Santana
@@jimc3786 Ross Vallory came from the Steve Miller band and Ainsley Dunbar was in many bands but not Santana.
I absolutely loved how Steve and Gregg harmonized. I miss them together.
Ya, my fav rock harmonies are the two of them together.
Why did he leave then? Was it a clash of two egos between him and Steve?
Saw them back in the day for $1.92 in Portland, Oregon...As their Star was rising....They came and hung out with the crowd! Great times.
Gregg Rollie and Neal Schon had just left Santana in 73, to form Journey. Steve Perry had just joined when this show was filmed in 78
Thanks for doing it this way guys...nice...
Yes, no computers, no Internet, we had to stay up until midnight to ROCK OUT! So many good shows!
The voice!!!!!!
Two songs that should always be played together .. 👍🏼
Feeling that way/Anytime are the Brain Damage/Eclipse of Journey
This is how we got our music back in the 70s, before MTV.
We had Saturday Night Special and Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert.
MOTHER FATHER. LIVE FROM HOUSTON gotta do it next!!!!!!!!
Just makes me want to go back to around 1983-1985
You guys are awesome, great reaction video made my day.

This song is sooo good. Thx
If you've ever heard "Black Magic Woman" by Santana, that's Gregg Rolie on vocals and Neil Schon on rhythm guitar.
No Neal isn’t on that track on the album. He was hanging with the band during Abraxas but didn’t join or record with them until Santana III. However, there are videos of Neal playing on Black Magic Woman, but it was after the album was released.

This two for one should always be played together. Was always played back to back on the radio.
It's the LAW

as well as Brain damage/Eclipse they SHOULD be played together
I was one of those DJ's back then that DID play this back to back...always, people would always ask me why, I said, it's music law! Rock ON!
I miss Gregg Rolie. Wish he never left Journey.
Talk about a treat - seeing Journey live at the Hampton Coliseum in 1978 and just groooooooovin' it
Greg Rollie sang Black Magic Woman for Santana. You can also see him in the Santana performance at Woodstock.

Peter Frampton performing Show Me the Way, Starbuck performing Moonlight Feels Right and Redbone performing Come and Get Your Love on the Midnight Special are great.
Do you feel like we do is great on MS too.
Give song Just the same way a listen, Gregg is the lead singer again and has a great guitar solo by Neil.
Rollie can sing his little tushy off 😅
And the harmonies these two created just magical ❤❤❤❤❤❤
