Wolfman Jack was the host that night he introduced Journey. He had the most recognizable voice in the 70s and 80s. R.I.P. Wolfman
I worked at a radio station in the 80s and he came in several times. He was so nice..
The Guess Who's Clap for the Wolfman has him in it.
Greg was the lead singer for Santana before helping form Journey with Neal Schon. At this point, Steve was the backup singer 🙂 Love Greg's voice but Steve is on another level. Great harmony ❤️
Neal Schon was in Santana too
Steve wasn't just the backup singer. He sang lead on most of the songs on this album.
@@Irockthere4 16 years old Neal was, Gregg brought him in.
Ross and Aynsley were also from Santana
@@jimc3786 Ross Vallory came from the Steve Miller band and Ainsley Dunbar was in many bands but not Santana.
That guy is Greg Rolle. He had platinum selling records with 3 different bands in three different decades.
I absolutely loved how Steve and Gregg harmonized. I miss them together.
Ya, my fav rock harmonies are the two of them together.
If you've ever heard "Black Magic Woman" by Santana, that's Gregg Rolie on vocals and Neil Schon on rhythm guitar.
No Neal isn’t on that track on the album. He was hanging with the band during Abraxas but didn’t join or record with them until Santana III. However, there are videos of Neal playing on Black Magic Woman, but it was after the album was released.
@@Jihavoh777 Good to know. I was just going by the video : )
yep!
@@Jihavoh777 Here's Schon and Rolle: ua-cam.com/video/ZyRmZe_9Z3I/v-deo.html
Don't forget Greg headed up The Storm who had a platinum album.
Two songs that should always be played together .. 👍🏼
Feeling that way/Anytime are the Brain Damage/Eclipse of Journey
This is how we got our music back in the 70s, before MTV.
We had Saturday Night Special and Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert.
I grew up watching the Midnight Special as a kid..my parents would be drinking whisky and rye and playing cards, smoking cigarettes partying with their friends..and us kids all 10 of us would watch this show....Sooo many great performances hard to pick a favorite
Same here! Midnight special for us kids while the parents were getting bombed!! Awesome times!
The studio cut of this is SO MOVING when you play it SUPER LOUD!!! Especially when "Anytime" drops! OMG - FABULOUS FIRE, YOU-GUYS!!!
Yes, no computers, no Internet, we had to stay up until midnight to ROCK OUT! So many good shows!
This two for one should always be played together. Was always played back to back on the radio.
It's the LAW
This comment contains FACTS.
as well as Brain damage/Eclipse they SHOULD be played together
I was one of those DJ's back then that DID play this back to back...always, people would always ask me why, I said, it's music law! Rock ON!
Saw them back in the day for $1.92 in Portland, Oregon...As their Star was rising....They came and hung out with the crowd! Great times.
The entire Infinity album is incredible. Gregg Rolie (keys) and Steve Perry are amazing together. Neal Schon pronounced “Shawn” on guitar. All amazing. Neal Schon is the founding member. Played with Santana at age 15. Totally self-taught. Neal is 68 years old now and still ripping that guitar in Journey today. They are getting ready to celebrate their 50 year as a band. Pretty incredible I’d say. Forever fan here. React to Winds of March from that same Infinity album.
that album is straight FIRE:))))
Winds of March kills me every time I hear it. ❤️
Schon might be the most underappreciated guitarist in rock. His pieces are a master class in composition.
And listen to his performance of this solo compared to the recorded version. They differ byONE note. That is really tough to do.
Old Journey is fantastic. Loved Gregs vocals
The best thing about this is not even the music! It is the banter from 10:40 for 1 minute.
When Tyler says, "The HOST!" Ryan nearly self-destructs! LMFAO!!!! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I miss Gregg Rolie. Wish he never left Journey.
I was a teenager watching midnight special with wolfman Jack and journey I love you❤❤❤ I'm 60 years old and I still rocking ❤
I’m so happy you guys gave Gregg his props for vocals. A sweet guy who volunteered to leave the band and let Perry shine. My favorite Journey album because of Gregg’s contribution ms
Actually, he was very tired of the road and wanted to raise and spend time with his kids. What a great dad
The hosts name is Wolfman Jack. He was a huge DJ in the 1970's.This was days of terrestrial radio. Wolfman had his radio station located in Mexico to bypass the sensors in the United States.
Just makes me want to go back to around 1983-1985
The host that night was Wolf Man Jack, probably the best known disc jockey of that era. He was featured in the film American Graffiti.
At this point, Steve was the lead singer, but Gregg - being the former lead - would share leads with Steve on a few songs until he left in 1980. Listen to the live album Captured. You will be amazed at how great these guys were live.
Gregg Rollie and Neal Schon had just left Santana in 73, to form Journey. Steve Perry had just joined when this show was filmed in 78
I saw Journey early 80s and couldn't believe how good they were live. Probably the best live band I've ever seen. Steve's vocals are unsurpassed. He's King.
The videos from the Houston concert are ridiculous. How can they be even better live in execution? but they are.
Same here! 💯
Now you see why us old timers will always Say this version of Journey blows the other Away!
Check out Journey's Blazer JUST The Same way!
The host was Wolfman Jack. The Guess who made a song about him called clap for the Wolfman. He was a famous DJ in the 60's and 70's
I miss the days when rock bands could all do complex harmonies.
This is the earlier form of Journey with Greg Rollie on keys. Guitarist Neal Schon and Gregg came out if Santana to form Journey. If you want to hear Gregg at his best , listen to his vocal on Santana’s Black Magic Woman!!!!
The 1981 Houston Journey show is a pinnacle- any song!
The host was the iconic radio deejay , Wolfman Jack, who ruled the airwaves for 30 years.
This was Steve Perry’s first album and performance with Journey! What a beautiful voice! He is amazing! Gregg Rolie and Steve are awesome together .
Growing up with Journey was the best. I bet everyone has a memory about what or where they were when hearing them for the first time. ❤️
"The Host" is the legendary Wolfman 🐺 Jack, maybe the greatest radio 📻 DJ of all-time. He did cartoon voicework, too, I believe, what with his unique voice, and also stars as himself (sorta) in the film 🎥 American Graffiti.
Talk about a treat - seeing Journey live at the Hampton Coliseum in 1978 and just groooooooovin' it
“Just the same way” and “Stone in love” two other great songs.
As always you guys made me laugh so hard 😂😂😂
And tonight's high school prom music is provided by Journey!
Some of greatest music of all time in that era.
For those too young to know, one of the greatest moments in rock history occurs during this song at 3:36 when Greg Rolie figuratively passes the torch to Steve Perry. Two seconds before, we were collectively holding our breath...could the new guy sing? Any doubt was completely smashed and destroyed within the next ten seconds - Steve Perry instantly ascended to the greatest male vocalist ever recorded.
Dream Duo: Greatest male & female vocalists ever recorded, together: Steve Perry & Karen Carpenter, produced by Richard Carpenter. An unusual idea that’s never been considered but I think it would stun. Technically possible as Richard still controls the Carpenters’ catalog.
Journey- Who's crying now - live in Houston. 💯 You're welcome 😉!
The host I believe was a guy who also had a show on the radio, his name was The Wolfman🤔
This is my favorite Journey song! It’s very often overlooked but it’s killer!
Oh my God! Wolfman Jack doing the intro. I had totally forgotten about him. Sorry funny to see! Don't know these songs at all. Steve Perry. Sweet Jesus! What a voice! Unmistakable!
Ooooh the harmonies rollie and perry pure gold baby ❤❤❤❤❤
I lived in Los Angeles for 30 years, and I worked retail management in a wealthy area, so celebrities would come into the store frequently. One day, I looked over, and there was Steve Perry at the front of the line waiting to be rung up. In my head I was like, "Hey, Steve Perry. Cool! Wow, he's shorter than I thought." I'd say he was/is 5' 7", maybe 5' 8", tops, which I never would have guessed from all the MTV videos I'd seen. And there you have it, another brush with greatness from my early days (this was 20 years ago, roughly).
Wolfman Jack was everywhere back in the day. Listened to him "host" all over the radio and television.
Steve said HOLD MY BEER.. I love them both. To bad they couldn’t get along!
Watch rock and roll induction 2017 they all thanked one another
I think they made up
These two were always played together on the radio
Best Journey songs, hands down.
Journey were loaded with talent; fantastic harmonies. But the best version of these songs is on their live album, Captured. They really amped it up.
This is my favorite two songs from Journey 😘😂💘✌️
"Clap for the Wolfman - He gonna rate your record high / Clap for the Wolfman - You gonna dig him 'til the day you die"
If you like Gregg n Steve together do "just the same way" official video! Another banger with Neil killing the guitar 🎸 solo
How blown would these guys be if they actually listened to the" Dream After Dream" album? Most of the Perry'ites hate it, which is joyous in itself.
Perry’s vocals are amazing on the three Dream After Dream songs that have vocals, so, no, most Perryites don’t hate it. And this particular Perry fan was over the moon to get a copy of it on vinyl.
Wife here...This is my Husband's FAVORITE song!!...It's so cool to hear you guys referencing "Stadium Rock"...We call it "Arena Rock"...Your Reactions are totally Awesome..!!!👍💯😎
RIP Wolfman Jack! Rock n Roll Radio legend.
The singer on keys is Greg Rolie who was the original singer in Santana. He's the vocalist you hear on Black Magic Woman.
The Host: Wolfman Jack. The Voice: Steve Perry. 😂 After they got Scones but Neil was a Shawn. 😉
These 70's songs are the best journey songs!!!!!!
Greg Rollie on the keys. He was the lead singer before Perry joined the band. When he quit, the keyboard player for the band Baby's, Jonathan Cain, took his place.
The guy who introduced journey was a DJ named Wolfman Jack . He had a radio show for a long time and he did TV shows!!!
DJ Wolfman Jack introduced Journey 😎
All of us oldtimers watched Midnight Special. LOL Graduated in the '70's so Midnight Special was the show you had to see for all the bands that were hot at the time. Also, once the Midnight Special was over, the TV went off the air until morning. We didn't have shows on TV 24 hours a day back then.
Greg and Neal were in Santana before they formed Journey. Love Greg’s voice bouncing off of Steve Perry’s. They’re all amazing.
The first time i heard this was in my now husbands-then teenage crush's- 1967 baby blue mustang. wow!!!!! i was hooked
You really need to check out Mother/Father from Journey's Houston Live 1981 show. You'll be blown away!
Okay, so here's the story. Gregg Rolie was the keyboardist / Organ player and singer for Santana from 1969 til the end of 1971. Guitarist Neal Schon was briefly in Santana as the second Guitarist, Gregg and Neal went to do their own thing in 1973, and Journey released three albums as a four piece, Journey (1975), Look Into The Future (1976) and Next (1977), they were a huge selling live act, but their records didn't sell much, all great albums, but more fusion rock / Prog Rock, their record company, Columbia, told them, "write catchier songs, and get a singer or we are dropping you", Hence Steve Perry was found and joined the band. Gregg continued to sing one to two songs at each Perry album Infinity (1978), Evolution (1979), and Departure (1980), after the live album Captured (1981) was mixed, and before their soundtrack effort Dream After Dream (1980) in Japan was released, Gregg left at the start of 1981, and Jonathan Cain from The Baby's was brought in. Jon helped create their juggernaut "Escape" in 1981, the rest is history.
Greg Rolie was a lead singer in Santana and Neal Schon played as a teenager with Carlos Santana. The rest of the band had more members from different California bands but eventually, Steve Perry came later after his band broke up due to a bandmember's death.
Journey was my 1st concert with Steve Perry and Neal is just amazing on guitar
If you like Greg's voice, check out Just the Same Way off the Evolution album
...or the interaction between the two on People and Places off departure. Any time they shared lead it worked really well.
Love it guys! The host was Wolfman Jack. A legend back in the day
Best songs by them. Love it , even with bad audio.
Journey at their best. Would have loved it if Gregg and Steve had both stayed for the duration. Great chemistry.
Journey was a prog rock jam band with Greg and Neal. The record label was about to drop them because they couldn't get radio airplay. So they brought in Steve to make them more radio friendly. Greg left a couple of years later. He said that he wanted to spend more time at home. There was much speculation that he didn't like being upstaged by Steve. BTW-Neal resisted bringing Steve into the band, too. Said he didn't think he fit in with the band. 🙂
It should be noted that the first person to leave from this grouping is the drummer, Ansley Dunbar. He'd played with David Bowie and Frank Zappa before joining the embryonic Journey. The year after this, John Barbata, the drummer for Jefferson Starship, was injured in a car crash, and Starship being the kings of the San Francisco music scene, they were able to get Dunbar to "trade up" and join them.
But I've also heard tell that Ansley thought these songs were a bit too commercial as opposed to "Kohoutek" and "Of A Feeling" and the earlier Journey stuff. I don't know that for sure, though.
Yeah, but he left to join Jefferson Starship- which sounded much more commercial if you ask me.
Love this song. Gregg Rollie and Steve Perry are a great tandem.
Journey had a bunch of great hits. You MUST check out the Live version of Mother Father from Houston I believe. It shows how GREAT Steve Perry's VOICE was
That's how great rock music was back in the late 70's/early 80's. Too bad you guys weren't there to enjoy it first time around. But, at leat you're gaining an appreciation for those great tunes now.
Never missed The Midnight Special . We were treated to a concert every Friday night , featuring multiple bands / performers . Man alive, what memories .
Nice reaction guys, as usual. Y'all's love of music is a joy to watch. You gotta listen to the original album versions. Songs play back to back with a very short break between them. Even shorter than the break in this performance.
A great radio experience. The DJ's always played both songs . They sort of had to, I guess , with technology being in it's relatively early stages back then. Radio listeners were spoiled . And we loved it .
Never heard this/these Journey song(s). Really enjoyed the performance. Will be added to my playlist.
Steve Perry always awesome in his sexiness and angelic voice, Neil Schon started with Santana at the age of just 15 amazing talent right there!! Greg actually picked Jonathan Cain for his replacement when he left
The best live performance (from any group from that era), is without a doubt Mother, Father, November 6, 1981 Houston Summit! A must see/hear!!!!!!!!!
The host's name is Wolfman Jack, and he was a famous radio disc jockey in Los Angeles. He was also in "Star Wars" director George Lucas's 1960s-set California teen dramedy "American Graffiti" (1973) and played, naturally, a radio disc jockey. Wolfman Jack was known for his gravelly voice and wolf-like howls as part of his gimmick/schtick.
The host was Wolfman Jack, a famous DJ with a very distinctive voice and look, as you can see and hear. He was known to all listeners of music in those days.
Steve Smith is extremely underrated on drums.
That’s Ainsley Dunbar, not Steve Smith, Smith didn’t join till the next album.
I keep thinking how lucky them people are to see Gregg and Steve sing together,I seen journey in 84 Gregg was gone but Steve killed it whole show it was 100 degrees outside and humid must of drank 30 beers that day great pick love these songs
10:04 -10:07-- "He's barely trying" 100%- Steve Perry greatness is effortless!
Even on crappy audio, there is no sweeter sound to my ears than Steve's voice.
Their friendship is a beautiful thing. Or maybe they're brothers.
My son Matthew S. Reynolds favorite song by Journey
Greg was the lead singer on their first three albums before Perry was hired. This is Steve's first album with them. It ws also their transition album between their earlier prog fusion sound, into AOR.
I do love me some Journey so thanks for your reaction guys! If you'd like to hear another great live performance try "Mother, Father" from their Houston 1981 concert.
Y'all don't even realize that this was produced by Roy Thomas Baker the same guy who produced all the early Queen
Gregg Rolie was a founding member of Journey along with Neal Schon (pronounced Shawn). Greg was a founding member of Santana (vocals on Black Magic Woman, Evil Ways) and Neal was also briefly a Santana bandmate. The young guitar prodigy had a choice between joining Santana or Eric Clapton's band. Later he and Rolie left Santana to form Journey to pursue a more progressive jazz/rock fusion style. Rolie was the original lead vocalist until they decided to add a different vocalist and pursue a bit more commercial radio friendly style. When Robert Fleischmann didn't pan out, their manager, Herbie Herbert, suggested and introduced the band to Steve Perry. Infinity was the first release with Perry in the band and still had songs featuring Rolie on vocals and implementing a hybrid approach. For more of this, check out the track "Just the Same Way." Rolie departed the band due to unhappiness with his lifestyle (excessive drinking, etc.) and wanting to tour less to focus on family, but has continued his music career. He was replaced by Jonathan Cain (the Babys). Rolie later formed another melodic rock band The Storm, with other former Journey bandmates and Perry-esque singer Kevin Chalfant. In 1994 he formed Abraxas Pool, going back to his Latin infused roots, similar to Sanatana. He has performed with the Ringo Starr's All-Star Band and currently helms The Gregg Rolie Band. In 2018-19, he and Neal performed a few dates as Journey Through Time, with Journey drummer Deen Castronova handling the Steve Perry vocal role. You can find videos of these performances on UA-cam. Neal has recently opened the door for Journey's upcoming 50th anniversary for Perry, Rolie and potential certain other former members to return in a limited capacity in order to help celebrate the band's milestone. We shall see on Perry as he hasnt performed live much in years, though Rolie would not surprise me. We can hold out hope for even 1 special performance if only for 1 song as a finale. Thank you for reacting to both songs together as it should be.
A story from a few years ago pointed out that Rolie didn't sign away his publishing. For that reason, he'll have to be on board if they want to perform most of their early catalog.
Peter Frampton performing Show Me the Way, Starbuck performing Moonlight Feels Right and Redbone performing Come and Get Your Love on the Midnight Special are great.
Do you feel like we do is great on MS too.
I really appreciate your appreciation for Neil's solo, It just fits and works so well with the song, and takes us powerfully into the big finish. Schon is absolutely one of the best ever. They could all rip fast, ferocious solos, most could even do it well technically. But his guitar work is a cut above in it's tastefulness, and ability to evoke strong emotion.
This is the very first single of this band in 1978. When I heard it, I was blown away. It is still the very best of there songs, hands down. This version is great. Sounds like the studio version. And yes, definitely meant to be a back-to-back song. That transition is incredible to me.
The voice!!!!!!
This was one of the last performances by drummer Aynsley Dunbar. He saw where it was going, and after the first three albums of ultra instrumentation, he said get me the hell out of here.
Possibly my very favorite Journey medley. brings back some amazing memories.Hope y'all enjoy listening to it as much as I have.
The reason these two are always played together is because, back in the day radio stations had ONE WAY to play the big songs...off the album. The space between the songs was so SLIGHT here, the (probably stoned) DJ could never kill it in time, so they just said "F*&k it, let 'em both play!" True story.
The wheel in the sky keeps turning, and I don't know where I'll be tomorrow.. I will just love the journey..
I am Class of "81" and saw these guys in 82 in Denver Colorado USA and they were Phenominal, absolutely shredded it. Master Musicians🤘😎
McNichols or Red Rocks?
😉
Was that the Escape tour?
Saw them 4 times! Starting 1976 to 1981. Thank you!!
I was in high school when Midnight Special was on air. Every Friday night they had a variety of bands. At that time Wolfman Jack was big on radio and TV. It was a fun time to be a teen.
The guy playing the piano is Greg Rolie..him and Neal school are the bands founders..journey was formed like 4 or 5 years before steve perry joined the band..after steve joined Greg was only on 2 albums, infinity and evolution..
Avalon Ball room 1978, WInds of March...My favorite Journey song.
Gregg Rolie was an original member of Journey! Gregg and Neil were members of Santana! Greg left because he got tired of touring and as far as I know Steve kind of took over! I think Greg felt like the 5th wheel!
BEST ALL TIME JOURNEY SONG! "Walks like a Lady is great."
