How To Put Your Baby To Sleep, According To "The Baby Whisperer"

  • Dr. Harvey Karp, also known as "The Baby Whisperer," explains how to put your baby to sleep using his five S's. This involves swaddling the baby, providing gentle white noise, and rocking the child. By doing this you are imitating the womb, which helps the baby to fall asleep.

Did you watch the video? Maybe you should read the book. He goes into keeping babies asleep in great detail (hint: whooshing deep white noise and swaddling are key).
However, nothing is going to cause a newborn to sleep more than 2-3 hours at a time. Just gotta get through that newborn phase.

I eat, rest and get help.. I'm glad when baby sleeps, but not obsessed by it. I plan my say around my babies, calm my mind & just be. Never met a baby swaddled correctly with the five S's who didn't benefit from it. They will sleep SO much longer if you swaddle them.

None of my three kids accepted any type of pacifier. They spat them farther I thought would be possible, no matter which model I tried. But I didn't have any problems with them lying around crying, either, or not getting them to sleep. I just put them into my handsewn mei tai (for the first months heart to heart against my chest, so I could breastfeed them everywhere and at every time without any hindrances; as soon as they were able to hold their heads I carried them on my back), and got moving. They loved to be carried around, slept during me vacuuming, cleaning, going to the playground / shopping / for a walk, breastfed them as often as they wanted to, and, the most important: trusted my motherly instincts, without getting caught up in "you must let them cry", "they have to learn to sleep on their own", "you may only breastfeed every 2,5 hours", "isn't that way too hot for them to be carried like this? why don't you just put them into a stroller?" or any other well-meant tips and hints.
Of course, the first days and nights are difficult for everyone, but very soon they will find their rhythm, and you don't die when you sleep for 3 hours and then have some 30-minute long naps throughout the day for some time. Hey, congratz if they sleep 8 hours from their second day on, but it's totally okay if they don't.
I probably sound terribly insensitive and old-fashioned, but way too many people are just way too pampered and used to self-unfolding and just dancing to their own drum. And instead of doing summersaults around their fragile feelings, every one of us should have someone who tells him to get it together 'cause everything will be all right, and to put the grown-up-pants on once in a while.

I think my baby hates kisses from her dad. She shakes her head at him somexs. He must feel like a cactus. It's OK bb, I feel the same way. Ive only heard about skin contact w/the mom tho. But our guinea pigs like eating his chest hair, lol. Also, 1 time I walked in on him letting her get on his nipples. Ha, mine are inverted. He said shut up I was just trying to comfort her. I thought they were more about seeking mommy's odors (milk) & heartbeat. Bc thats what they're used to.. I'm trying now but w/ the help of some machinery & nip covers &what not. I guess I gave up to easily w/ my first.

Another major tip he didn’t mention to have your baby sleep like a pro is the darkness your babies room needs to be for sleeping proper.
I consider myself a baby whisperer, when I had my baby at 18 I was impressed with my mother instincts at a seemingly younger age.
But really the major key points I used were white noise type of things. Humidifiers and fans worked like a charm. But on top of that, making sure the sun wasn’t a thing during their slumber helped so much I couldn’t believe it.
Get the kind of curtains that block out light completely, or get crazy and hang up extra blankets over the blinds. You won’t regret the extra bit of sleep you’ll be able to scrounge in the process :D

Now she sleeps up to five hours at night and wakes up without fussing. I breastfeed her and she goes straight back to sleep for another 4-5 hours. And i get the same amount of sleep at night too.

@@anjuparajuli8614 don't be so hard on yourself. Are you sure you are swaddling tightly enough? this was my mistake. If you let the baby move their arms inside the swaddle. where they can fight it and get their arms up or out of the swaddle. They get frustrated and start to cry... if you wrap them snug where the arms dont move when they try to Jerk themselves awake at night. They will soothe themselves and go back to bed... to loose and those arms get any movement... they'll startle awake and start to cry.

My baby nephew hated all the traditional methods. He pushed out pacifiers with his tongue, he hated being swaddled, he cried anytime he was in a laying position, he loved to prove advice after advice wrong. Then finally we found a fool proof way to make him sleep. Hold him upright against the heartbeat and go on a short walk. Works every time.

The minute I lay her down in her bassinet, 10 minutes later she starts crying. Every night this has been a routine now. I'm not sure when I can stop rocking her enough that she'll fall into a deep sleep I just set her down on my soft bedding and she loves it (and stays asleep of course) but I can't have her in my bed so now I'm stuck.

I always put our 4 babies to sleep on their side & blocked their body so they couldn't roll into their stomach. So if they spit up while in their bed, they couldn't choke on it if stuck on their back. They often feel asleep nursing while I slept on my side, the baby on the outside of the bed not between us. Only for a couple weeks. As soon as they could sleep ok in their own room, yay! 5 weeks with me with our first baby. 4 weeks with #2. 3 weeks with #3, and I got the 4th trained in only 2 weeks to sleep in the baby's room. I did have a bassinet next to my bed to help with training. I found that one arm down straight & one arm up was the most soothing, but unfortunately that allowed thumb sucking to become a habit for too many years, so if I had it to do over, I would do both arms down!

He was the one who made me sleep very deeply and I still see him do the same with other kids..
He really makes everyone sleep.. sometimes with soft voice.
    Sometimes shaking them.
Sometimes he turns them and shakes.
Sometimes he do something that can make them sleepy in a crying or angry moment of kids.....

White and pink noise facilitating long, deep and healthy sleep are of particular importance for children. There is no absolute silence in the mother's womb. Various sounds reach the fetus - voices, music, and even the sound of flowing blood. Through the amniotic fluid and the specific environment in the mother's body, all sounds that reach the fetus appear as white noise. After giving birth, such a sound makes the baby feel safe and confident. This noise reminds the baby of the conditions in the mother's belly. In the case of newborns and infants, white noise will work not only during sleep. It is also worth using it to soothe and calm a crying baby.
