You have somehow made such an overwhelming topic so easy to understand! Your little Noah is SO cute and probably the most adorable visual study tool I've ever seen! I'm an auditory learner and am so grateful for your videos. Staring at charts was starting to drive me crazy! Thank you Miri!

Thank you, Allison!! It's so wonderful to have you here studying with me and I'm delighted to hear that you're enjoying seeing Noah! It was hard for me to visualize or conceptualize a lot of the concepts in pediatrics prior to having my own baby so I understand the struggle. I'm delighted to know that my videos (and the love of my life Noah) can make studying more fun and less overwhelming for you. Thank you for sharing this journey with me! ❤

1:54 can't be any more SPOT ON! I graduated in 2018 and still haven't taken my COTA exam because the insane amounts of information for my constantly distracted by every dust particle in the air ADHD mind that doesn't allow me to focus(which leads to months of sadness since I'm not certified yet, then leading to determination to take it with a repeating cycle of prior). One of the problems being, all the information especially in peds, which is my hardest category due to the age ranges, diagnoses and every detail about everything known to man just being too much. It varies everywhere I look. Even programs like PasstheOT(spent $400+continuing to spend) has different age ranges for the same things! It's getting pricey for all of this information! I quit my job in 2018 just to try to help my ADHD brain have more time in the day to study and money is draining quickly while living on scraps. You study in one resource that sit /s support & pull to stand is 6mo but then in another spot sit /s support, pull to stand is 6-9mo! Which is it?! You know? I COMPLETELY understand that it varies from child to child but there seriously needs to be a set in stone time frame for test taking purposes for everything. We can learn later the varying ages, but for TESTING PURPOSES, we need a solid, correct, not varying exact age they want us to know. **Real Example** I had studied that children age 16-18mo have "Ability to hold cup & drink I'ly /c ^ control of liquid in mouth." So, naturally with all of this info locked in my brain after weeks of studying JUST peds hardcore, I go into taking a complete Ped's exam psyched that I'm solid on Ped's info finally. I come out of the test with a 62 because of so many bogus questions about varying age ranges and silly side bogus info about diseases that isn't anywhere to even study and that you should just assume would be the case(even though everyone says never assume).. anyways, I get a question on the test saying that little Timmy is delayed in feeding and can now drink from an open faced cup and hold the fluids in without a problem, blah blah, what age is that normally learned by? So, I choose 15-18mo because I know that for a FACT even though I studied 16-18mo as it said that in the text) and I get it WRONG!!! Apparently 12-14mo is when THE TEST says he should be able to do that! WHAT?! 12-14mo is supposed to be dipping /c spoon, spoon>mouth /c spills by inverting spoon and on a different spot of the text, it says 13-15mo is dips spoon, spoon>mouth /c spills & closed lip chew. HOW AM I WRONG?! Why is nothing accurate. I love OT and I plan to be an COTA in a SNF(get me the heck away from peds forever please, I worked 9yrs in SNF and plan to stay with my favorite age range ever), but the inconsistency of the information given for basic testing knowledge is completely pathetic for a profession. It's so infuriating that there's no set data to follow just for testing purposes, allowing you to test with basic knowledge, leaving varying age ranges to be determined later on in the field.
**There needs to be a "National Institute of Standards and Technology" for everything OT that can vary. "The National Bureau of Standards was founded with the mandate to provide standard weights and measures, and to serve as the national physical laboratory for the United States." They keep a record of weight, distance, mass, everything, so that there's a standard for use and research. Why is there no "standard" in OT? Everything is too inconsistent for testing purposes. There needs to be a standard and it needs to be enforced to teaching students correct and testable data in schools, books and ALL online "NBCOT exam" specified studying sites/platforms; not varying data. Studying for this COTA exam is like making an 8oz glass of chocolate milk with coco powder, following the directions to make it come out delicious and then getting tested on the "correct" measurement of powder to put into your milk to make it a delicous, properly made glass of "chocolate milk" but yet every cup that tastes good and measured properly is WRONG depending who tastes your chocolate milk.**
It's nonsense , it can be any variation to taste buds/to testing site/NBCOT. We need to pick the most average and STICK WITH IT. How else are we supposed to know the correct date to use for our $600 exam that we don't even know if we're right or wrong on questions until we get a general global score of the exam back?
I'm writing all this to you because you're the first extremely smart OT person to actually sound like it's frustrating to students/people. So, it feels like you are seeing what we're all seeing. Testing needs STANDARD DATA across all schooling/test prep areas.
I'm extremely passionate about becoming a COTA, there's just roadblocks for me and they hit hard. The inconsistency in absurd amount of silly information you need to know/assume even though there's a more or just as valid addressing answer in the answer choices really ticks me off. This COTA exam is the hardest thing, I struggle with tests in general as the information on them is too much and requires too much consistent uninterrupted studying time for a high ADHD hyper-focused/hyper-distracted brain. I have accommodations for school (using them for the NBCOT exam) and survived on 90-100s on papers, research, presentations, hands on lab, quizzes(due to small amounts of data), while failing (40s-70s) on basically every exam, with one or two 80s as miracle tests I have no idea how I did so well on. A two-four hour assignment for a normal person would take me easily 12-36 hours to complete due to needing to be insanely thorough and perfect for my inevitable test failing that I've lived my whole life having to work around. This inconsistent information makes it even harder. The sad part is that it shouldn't be inconsistent and yet no one is doing anything about standardizing it, it's just being looked over and forgot about once the person passes their exam.

    • @MiriLee

Kara Truskolawski Kara, thank you for your kind and sweet feedback. This video, along with the milestones series, is something I’ve poured my heart into for many months for our community and it’s everything I wish I had when I was preparing for the exam. As someone who never enjoyed pediatrics prior to having my own baby, this was a really hard area for me to master. Learning the milestones can be overwhelming, but focusing on the broad milestones, principles of motor development and sequence (instead of trying to memorize every detail of every month) will really help you understand and apply the important concepts clinically. I hope these videos give you the knowledge and confidence you need to not only pass the exam, but to work with children if that’s the practice setting you want to pursue. Thank you for loving and appreciating this heart project. It means a lot to me. The rest of the series can be found on my website under the VIDEOS section. Because of the personal and intimate nature of these videos showing my own baby, I’m keeping it exclusive to my dearly beloved occupational therapy community. Sending you so much love and blessings, Kara!
