  • Newborns display several behaviors that can often be confusing for new parents, and lead to less than ideal sleep as a result. Often we see our babies doing certain things, and that can lead us to thinking they're awake when they aren't.
Then there are times when we put all of this pressure on ourselves to get them to sleep, when really it's an uphill battle and one that's impossible to win. The end result being excess stress and anxiety - which is the last thing any new parent needs.
In this video you'll learn 4 newborn sleep behaviours and how to manage them when you see them so you avoid unnecessary waking, experience better naps, and hopefully also feel a little more relaxed when it comes to your baby's sleep.

@@christianreed4396 the number 1 thing I wish I knew from the start was that newborns cry in their sleep. If yours start crying give them a good 30 seconds before you pick them up or you’re just disturbing their sleep. Other than that I would setup your phone to only allow it to ring from the hospital/your wife. You don’t want it ringing off the hook when your baby is sleeping. Set alarms every 3 hours to make sure your baby eats. Mine didn’t wake up on his own for them but it’s important they get enough formula/milk. And try to take care of yourself. Sleep when they sleep if you can. I ended up losing a pile of weight because I wasn’t sleeping and forgetting to eat. I wish you the best of luck, I assure you that it’s worth everything in the end

Just knowing this variability and unpredictability is 'normal' will help so much I think and I wish I had seen it before having my first child! Our sons' sound kept my wife up all night, where I just ignored him. We have a monitor for breathing, and if he stops, it goes off. I just listen for an alarm or crying, so I've been making my wife go to bed early, and little man and I sleep in the living room. Sooo much better for her. Emma,
Such an important work you do because babies are not just mindless cuties/ mindless troublemakers.
They are already individuals, and although they ALL will not remember their infancy, amazingly, many will remember MANY episodes within this first era of their lives on earth.
A child given food, but no loving affection - will die.
A child who is not given time and occasion to bond with his parents will always feel alienated from them.
Thank you for your video guides!!!

Hello Emma! Thanks a lot for all the useful info! I have a question regarding the end of your video, the 3 features of your baby's sleep. When it comes to sleeping environment I understand that it has to be implemented specially from 6 weeks onwards but it is not clear on the video if the room temperature that you mention should also be set from 6 weeks or from their first week. I read that the room temperature should be around 22-24°c for a newborn so I'm a little confused on the temperature that you mention. Thanks a million!

We're 3 weeks into it. The first two weeks, he didn't make noises he just slept. When I say slept, I mean like we literally still now have to wake him up to feed him. He sleeps 4 to 5 hours at a time and gets actively irritated when woken up to feed. He JUST started to make these grunting noises, and he now is up for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. When he started these noises I of course, started getting nervous. Thank you to all the people who make videos like this. I thought we were doing something wrong.

I won the baby lottery. My nb hasn't had colic. At 2 and a half month's, she sleeps at 8 every night and wakes at 6 In the morning. She wakes every 2 hour's to feed.

Everything in this video makes sense expect the last bit. Many midwifes have told me that babies fall asleep faster and sleep better when there's noise around. Babies love wihte noise because that's what they are used to from being in the womb (the mother's organs are considered to emit quite a lot of sound). If it's completely quiet around them, their subconscious might get the signal of abandonment and they will make themseves heard.
    Otherwise lovely video!

  • @lilstars5599

None of my babies or myself can sleep in quiet or dark. And ironically it began because I was feeding my first son so often, I got too tired to get up and put on the telly for each feed. So I started watching shows on my computer. While feeding in bed. He stopped napping all together at 6 months old. By 2 he was drumming, but 5-6 a very accomplished drummer. ADHD like his mumma. This video was great. But just wanted put my hand up here for neurodiverse families. Full blown panic attacks if I'm in a dark, quiet environment. Seems 2/3 of my babies are the same. We can sleep nicely to black and white relaxed music. Lanegan live is our go to.

Yeah I just had my baby last month and picked up on this quick 🤣 I won't move/touch her unless she's actually awake. She will be actively crying and her eyes will be open, thats how I know. And she only wakes crying when she's hungry so ill rush to feed her but thats about it. If she wakes and she's just looking around I'll scoop her and walk around so she can enjoy the scenery lol

This is 💯 true. I use to have a night light and music on bc I thought babies slept better with it until I forgot to turn it on one night and my son slept for longer and was well rested in the morning. The music is soothing for sure but now I play music only in the day time whether it be in his play time or nap time. No more night light either not even to feed him.

This is the scariest part of having a newborn for me. I have epilepsy, and sleep deprevation is the number one siezure trigger for me. My medications control my siezures, but its always possible to have a break through siezure woth hormonal changes, and of course sleep deprevation. Really wishing I had a village...
