I have one. I had the barrel cut down and reprofiled. It made a huge difference in weight. I'm also going to change out the hand guard to a Geisselle. also have a hammer forged, chrome lined barrel for it made by Nefarius Arms. They did the cut down and reprofile.
Not sure if you're aware but the newest import MR556s have a thinner HK416 profile barrel, which brings the weight down about 11 oz , and mlok rail making the stock rifle around 7lbs 11oz-ish! Also a lot of people don't realize this, but you can replace the special tool pins if you want with regular (or better yet standard HK416 pins) if you don't like it but it does from my understanding usually give the rifle that tiny tiny bit of movement like a Daniel Defense.
I have the newer one with the Mlok rail, I think its solid so I didnt see the need to get a new rail. Running a Vortex Razor 1-6 E. I can easily get first round hits at 350.
Am I the only one that loves their takedown pins? It’s an extra step to field strip, but I don’t imagine id need to field strip this thing in a time crunch.
I thought you had MR556A1 videos. Now, I get why it's a SPR. The non-chrome-lined is just like the stainless steel barrels on Mark 12 clones, all for accuracy. Thanks, Navy. Always learn something new with your videos.

Solid video and info. Most think this gun is a 416 the way it works, yet dont understand intended purpose and application. Like the MK12, SS barrel was designed for accuracy and never intended for automatic fire. Can it do it? Absolutely, however not recommended. You hit it all, well done!
Exactly and people's expectations are not always realistic. But they wouldn't beat on those other guns so...you would think they could be able to apply that standard to similar setups. Not how it is unfortunately. Thanks for the feedback man I appreciate it.
How come you keep the flip up iron sights on? Do you frequently take off the LPVO and shoot irons? Wouldn’t you have to rezero the scope when you put it back on every time? Thanks
All my rifles start with irons and they stay zeroed with the paired ammo. So the irons on this MR556 are zeroed for the 77gr TMKs. I don't take the LPVOs off my rifles once they're on there. I did have to send my VCOG in because i couldn't get the battery cap off after the previous owner painted it. So it's a good thing I have the Irons zeroed so my 11.5 Geissele isn't out of commission.
It is now, at the time it was market value. You'll be upset to know I paid 2K for my second one from a buddy who was getting out of them. Part of it was a buddy hook up price and he had his eyes on another project. But the modern prices make my stomach hurt for sure. I want a second MR762 for a battle rifle project, but I might have to abandon that idea based on the prices. I like having backups. But they are absolutely worth it. Even at the aggressive prices. They just perform.
@@navyman8903 I like your style. Question are you getting any gouging from you cal pin on the upper receiver? I’m thinking about replacing it with a roller cam pin from POF.
While not euro A3 or A5 status, I'm so glad they updated these recently with the 12.5" MLOK rail, lightened barrel and OTB pin. Finally picking one up. Sucks they finally did it in Xiden's era, but it is what it is. Between the re-intro of civvy MP5's, MR556 upgrades, and OR VP's, now they just need to do OR P series and pic rails on USP's and we will be golden.
The MLOK migration was a smart move on their part save the length. But they were trying to shave weight so....I want to say I get it, but they also know it needs to be longer lol.
@@navyman8903 are 416s available for civilians? I thought they were military only and the 556a1 was the civilian one? also betweent he 416 and 556a1 which would you prefer?
@@wcsdiaries Yes they are. The 416 is available by 2 means. 1 a post dealer sample 10.4" upper. Or 2. A brownells parts kit build though some people are lamenting the quality. I like my MR556s just fine for what they are. I use them as 16" precision builds/SPRs as MK12 replacements. They're hyper accurate for an AR pattern rifle and so long as you do copper solvent treatments every 4-5K rounds, they last a long time. There are guys north of 25k rounds down the barrel.
IT's definitely a solid rifle, but a 416 it isn't. Which is what people expected. Which I can kinda get. But if you're pushing 77gr ammo and shooting farther than 200 yards, I can't recommend this setup strongly enough. IT's perfect for it.
Thanks for the detailed reviews! Any interest in SOLGW? I’ve wondered if they are worth the extra cash over a bcm. Maybe its the QC like gauging their parts, receivers etc..I know BCM has great QC when it comes to their BCG but idk about the rest of the rifle. Also, have you seen the advantages of the proprietary parts used in Knights gun over the “ traditional” DI ar? Sorry for the long message. Thanks again!
I'm not super impressed with SOLGW. I'm not saying their bad, but for me it's not a huge jump in quality or worth the increase in price. I would recommend centurion over them. Their barrels are top tier and there are tests out there to confirm. Also the owner of centurion doesn't have the issues that the owner of SOLGW has. I also purchased 7 of the SOLGW steel mags and I'm very underwhelmed with them to say the least.
I forgot to mention that the reason why HKMr556 is not able to hold the tolerance in full auto is because they didn’t chrome line the barrel, and they did relaxed the reliability of it cause, 99.99% of the time we are not going to be in that harsh environment compared to soldiers boots on the ground that are in or on the field, they made the civilian version reliable enough that it will defiantly last as long as you are
@@Chris09978 or H&K can just manufacture them to milspec here in the US and offer them to civilians like all the other companies (Colt, FN, Daniel Defense, LMT, Sig Sauer)
@@R.Tafolla No they can’t just do that, Germany have very very strict import laws when it comes to firearms. If they tried to sell like the 16” or the 14.5” they have to sell it as a “pistol” otherwise they can’t, so that’s why you see more German made pistols in states than rifles. I would love to have a fully German made Mr556 that has the same specs as the 416, but thanks to the German import laws and the 922R law we have we know who to thanks for that.
@@Chris09978 which is why I said build a plant here like FN, CZ and Sig Sauer have. If it’s manufactured in the US you don’t have to worry about import laws
To be honest it was all planning and it has taken time for me to buy nice things. IF you're consistent you can get there. The lesson/wisdom I wish I took from my uncle was stack money to the roof and ignore just spending money. Then when those deals that would hurt to pass up, you can afford to snipe. IF I had like $10K just sitting/growing here and there, then I could grab anything off my remaining buy list. It is hard though. I've been really lucky and bought at the exact right time for my finances/prices.
Ik this video is old, but HK is starting or trying to import the ones made in Germany the reason why they are having a hard time is cause the ATF is trying to ban it, so if you see them out of stock this is why. If you are looking at the ones that is like 12k for the rifle that’s the old import of them cause they got away with it selling it as a “pistol” the ones you see that are 3k standard price of the mr223 then those are the ones they imported to the US before they were put on hold from the ATF. MrGunsandGear has a video about it kinda disgusting but my fingers is crossed and hoping that the import will continue. Before you guys ask yes HK is trying to import the Mr233 as a rifle I am seeing the 16” 14.5” and 11.5” and they all go for 3k so standard price if you buy the Mr556. Mr223 is the European version or the German made on that’s is a civilian version of the 416 A5/A7 the one that’s here US is the basic 416. Mr223 is updated with an adjustable gas block, and has ambi controls. The Mr556 doesn’t have an adjustable gas block and they say ambi in specs from dealers they do not. That’s the only difference
Great video........Question: how do I know what buffer and spring to get after I chop my barrel down to 10.5 Is there a site or forum you can direct me to please regards, Rick
I would have the standard spring it comes with on hand, but also have a sprinco white or hot white spring, with an H1 buffer on stand by. The H1 is probably what it will need based on who does the chop and what gas block you go with.
@@navyman8903 So I can't use the original Gas Block? I thought it is proprietary Can I jsut cut above the gas block?| and leave the original gas block there? Thanks for all your help
@@rickvestuto You can for sure, but some dudes install the vented gas block like they do on the 416's. So if you do that you really have to go much lighter. Using the standard you'll have to see how it runs then make a judgement call.
Hey navy you got any suggestions on where to find extra SMR rail sections of the geissele handgard? I’ve been looking but they seem to be either sold out or discontinued everywhere.
I have the gray guns trigger in two of my P30’s, along with lazy wolf trigger jobs. I like the feel of it, but for some reason seem to be more proficient with the oem trigger and lazy wolf trigger job or the oem trigger and gray guns short reset (LEM).
I realized all too late how unobtainium all this stuff is now. I kinda feel like a dick because the SMR is forever out of stock, and the rifles come to the US in batches. So once they're sold out for the year, it's out of stock till the next year/shipment.
Awesome review as you always put out. I never thought to get an MR556 but I’m thinking about getting one now. The new 2020 builds have a lighter profile barrel. It’s obviously a little lighter but how do you think it’ll affect performance? Was it a good step? Better handling to sacrifice some of the accuracy, or doesn’t matter?
Hello. Excellent and informative video. The HKMR556A1 comes in a 10.5 I understand that it’s pricey, can I get it from HK?? Thank you an thank you for your timely response
So I have an MR556 and I pretty much just replaced the handguard with a UTG Pro 15". It's heavy when I hold it at home at the range you almost forget about it. That being said, what do you think about the newest MRs that came out recently ? They now come with an M-Lok and a light profile barrel. I would to try the lighter barrel, but part of me thinks that with the loss of mass in the barrel it will get hotter quicker and wear out faster all other things being equal. Now how much faster it might wear I'm not sure, but it should prove an interesting experiment.
I want one of these. Price is high, I know. But my only hang up is I don’t know how I feel about an unlined barrel. For you guys that know more than me, is the unlined MR556 barrel an issue?
@@navyman8903 Ok. I went to the store for a DD M4A1 and then saw this HK there it wanted it too. Left with neither as I do more research. Which would you go with if price isn’t an issue?
@fearnonebutone4977 depends on what you have in your safe already. If you have a good fighting rifle already, then get the HK. If you don't have a good fighting rifle then get the DD. The HK with a 1-8 on it or a 2-10 would be excellent for a precision gun with some 77gr OTM.

If it fits your requirements. I really love it as an SPR, it's very accurate and cranks out pretty solid velocity numbers for only being a 16.5" barrel.

Lifting definitely helps, it helps me move it around without issue. Good snag on the rail. I found a black SMR for my second MR556 so I'm good there. I was lucky to find it on a forgotten shelf of my LGS.
HK is evolutionary, not revolutionary. They have a solid 5.56 rifle platform that has been tested, and proven reliable, by armed forces all over the globe. Why reinvent the wheel when your product speaks for and sells itself? If you want fluted barrels, and neon green furniture, and whatever goofy designer purse you've turned your AR into... that's your business. If you want to own an overbuilt, rugged firearm from a legendary company. Invest in a HK rifle
I think the gas piston system on the MR556 is much more robust and longer lasting vs the MCX. I want to like the MCX but the reliability isn't there yet.
I don't know if I would say all that and the 516 isn't very well received or used by that many people. I've never seen one in person. I've seen other MR556s in the wild, but never a 516.

I mean once you get up there in that stratosphere they’re all going to be pretty good. but I felt LMT gave you a little something more, with the MARS lower, barrel swap system, the quality of their barrels, mono rail, and the EBCG. I looked hard at a Geissele 11.5 Super Duty that was brand new and 500 off MSRP, and still went LMT. When you broke it down it just didn’t compare. The versatility of the LMT and the quality is just ridiculous. It might not be the softest shooter, or the lightest, but it’s accurate, versatile, and tough; it’s built for war.

Happy to help where I can.

Great review. I saw PSA had a sale on these and it took every fiber of my being not to buy it. But mark my words I will own an MR556….
Suttle flex of bringing in the disassembled mr556 upper @ barrel nut discussion
That bolt is pristine!!
I love it. The machine work is second to none.

Thank you for presenting this video in a factual, unbiased manner. A lot of good information about this rifke within this video.
2,700 is a steal of a deal. Just got one for 3,500 plus tax and another 1,000 on a new giessele trigger and hand guard. Money well spent tho😂
@@element7us not gouging, just some wear. I had a roller cam pin from POF before. They make everything smoother.

@@wcsdiaries Yes they are. The 416 is available by 2 means. 1 a post dealer sample 10.4" upper. Or 2. A brownells parts kit build though some people are lamenting the quality.
I like my MR556s just fine for what they are. I use them as 16" precision builds/SPRs as MK12 replacements. They're hyper accurate for an AR pattern rifle and so long as you do copper solvent treatments every 4-5K rounds, they last a long time. There are guys north of 25k rounds down the barrel.
You narrated this like its a love story. Great review bro, thinking about getting one after I purchace a thermal for yote hunting.
Thanks man.
Interesting gun and video. In my mind I filed the MR556 under "would never own" but I can see now that was prejudiced.
Rumor mill is that BCM contracts out their parts and merely assembles them at their own warehouse.
To bad they discontinued this rail model.... nice rifle you have!
Thank you. I was lucky to get it and the black rail on my 2nd MR556.
I will trade in my s&w m&p 15 sport 2 for Hk mr556. I love Hk
I forgot to mention that the reason why HKMr556 is not able to hold the tolerance in full auto is because they didn’t chrome line the barrel, and they did relaxed the reliability of it cause, 99.99% of the time we are not going to be in that harsh environment compared to soldiers boots on the ground that are in or on the field, they made the civilian version reliable enough that it will defiantly last as long as you are
boo. If im overpaying for H&K i want it to be military spec
@@R.Tafolla you can buy the German 416 upper all you have to do is pay $6,000 or buy the German imported ones that go for $8,000

@@R.Tafolla No they can’t just do that, Germany have very very strict import laws when it comes to firearms. Thanks and it's been an excellent rifle.
Wishing I had your kinda cash for rifle setups.
Great video........Question:
how do I know what buffer and spring to get after I chop my barrel down to 10.5
Is there a site or forum you can direct me to please

I would have the standard spring it comes with on hand, but also have a sprinco white or hot white spring, with an H1 buffer on stand by. The H1 is probably what it will need based on who does the chop and what gas block you go with.
@@navyman8903

Can I jsut cut above the gas block?|
and leave the original gas block there?

Awesome review as you always put out. I never thought to get an MR556 but I’m thinking about getting one now. The new 2020 builds have a lighter profile barrel. It’s obviously a little lighter but how do you think it’ll affect performance? Was it a good step? Better handling to sacrifice some of the accuracy, or doesn’t matter?
I'm sure the new barrels will adhere to HK's quality standards and accuracy standards. I would be interested to get a hold of one myself to test out.
For sure!! I’m sure they’ll be good to go. I pulled the trigger on a new MR556. I believe it has the heavier barrel but I’m okay with that.
Thinking of making a piston AR with a quality barrel. Would that be the same thing?
I'm interested to get my hands on one and try it out.
I want one of these. Price is high, I know. But my only hang up is I don’t know how I feel about an unlined barrel. For you guys that know more than me, is the unlined MR556 barrel an issue?
The unlined barrel is fine if you don't constantly mag dump with it. Use it like a MK12 that you can shoot more and you'll be good.
