      There was an argument in the Marines for awhile about whether they wanted a Drum/Magazine Fed weapon like the Singapore Industries Ultimax 100 which has a quick change barrel and weighs around 15lbs loaded vs the Belt Fed M249 at 17lbs empty. As an aside, the Ultimax 100 was designed by James Sullivan who redesigned the AR10 to become the M16 and later worked for Ruger to create the Mini-14. The Ultimax guys lost out and the Marine Brass wanted their own rifle that they, not Big Army where the program mangers for, like SOCOM tired to do with the SCAR program (everyone hates Big Army). The Marines used the replacement of the M249 as a backdoor to get a new rifle for the Marines. As a LMG replacement the M27 SUCKS. Belts are lighter, so you can carry way more rounds than you can in magazines. More importantly, is the ability to change barrels and maintain a volume of fire when needed. The whole "Accuracy Thing" is overplayed, as typically you are directing suppressive fire where you think the enemy is, sometimes using the dust kicked up by their rifles to target those areas, pinning them in-place so the infantry can either maneuver and kill them and/or hit them with heavier weapons. In built up areas, where engagements are closer and people are more exposed as they bound from positions, you saw a a lot of SAW gunners with red dots, zeroed for 300 meters, ditching their magnified optics. What really is needed is a lighter M240 replacement in 7.62x51 replacing the M249 in the TOE and not the stupid M5/M7 SIG 6.8 rifle.

      @@Chrisblau I helped Larry source and order parts for the HkM4, nothing special (furniture), so I've been following it almost from the start when he was with CDD.
      The Unit had challenges getting anything shorter than 14.5" to run, but had always wanted a shorter option for certain tasks. They had been using 653s since Colt introduced them, then replaced them with early 723s around '84-'85, later Abu Dhabi 723s with brass deflector in '87, then transitioned into the M4A1 in '94.
      They had even done rudimentary fleet testing with the ZM Weapons LR-300, but the build quality wasn't there and parts were falling off the guns (front sight parts) during CDD's testing, so it was rejected.
      My point wasn't to be a wise guy, but to simply wonder why MARSOC isn't using their service's new issue rifle after all that went into it.
      One of the initial responses to the 416 in The Unit was that it was noticeably heavier than the M4, which led to the lighter profile barrel in subsequent iterations.
      My guess is that weight might have something to do with why MARSOC stuck with M4s on the SOPMOD Block upgrade path.

    The Marines never intended for the IAR to replace the SAW.
    Roughly 2/3rds of the SAWs continued in use despite fielding the IAR. And the Marines also continued funding for a possible SAW replacement.
    The SAW replacement concept was used as a way to get years of combat testing prior to the Marines then issuing the IAR across the board to their infantry.

    12 moa vs 2 moa is a bit misleading. The DENSITY of the cone of fire matters. A sufficiently dense 12 moa cone of fire can increase hit probability, depending on what you're doing. Also, that reload may be faster but it's going to happen almost 7 times as often round for round or at least twice as often at the sustained rate. I got to run a squad with 1x 249 and 3x m27 and it was the perfect mix.

      Yeah the whole reasoning for this rifle seems like nonsense. I've heard multiple reasons for its adoption and they're all different depending on who tells the story but ultimately I've heard that a rifle that was more accurate at distance was needed and so they replaced the 20" m16 with 4x ACOGs with 16" HK416s with 3.5x ACOGs and also they had to replace everyones M4 with a 416 because the M249 sucks.
      It makes absolutely no sense really. Obviously the USMC just wanted to replace the m16/m4 and had tried to multiple times but each time congress rejected the idea because whatever gun they wanted to replace the M4/M16 with was another 5.56 rifle and it offered no additional capability. So, instead of saying they were replacing the M4/M16 they said they were technically replacing the M249 BUT in doing so required a complete doctrinal change so EVERYONE should have an M27. Finally they succeeded in replacing the m16/M4 with a rifle that does the same thing but instead it has a piston mechanism. That's fine with me quite frankly. The M4 is genuinely dated. I think the standard issue infantry rifle now should be a Geissele URGI 14.5" and infantry MOS should be issued two uppers, one with an 11.5" barrel and a 14.5" or 16" with a suppressor. Also, all infantry rifles should have a match grade trigger like an SSA or a LaRue MBT2S. The rifle would be a little bit more expensive but really not that much more. It's a price I'd be willing to pay, as a tax payer, to better equip our soldiers for the modern battlefield. BUT, I also am into guns and can understand why such upgrades would be useful.
      The KAC SR16 is what the US Military should really be using. Every branch should be using it or something like it. DI is superior to piston.

    • @cm-pr2ys
      @cm-pr2ys 9 місяців тому

      @nwaites01 the M27 does everything better than the SAW besides putting out a high volume of fire. That's it. Everything else, the IAR is leaps and bounds over the SAW. In addition, there are more m16a4 rifles and m4 carbines than there would be SAWs, so which one should the USMC choose to replace to make the most impact for the least amount of cost? The rifles and carbines because everyone has one, and not the SAW. It honestly was time for the SAW to be updated anyway.
      With that being said, why would you issue riflemen a 10.5? They need the range to properly engage the enemy. 14.5 and 16.5 only.

    • @cm-pr2ys
      @cm-pr2ys 9 місяців тому

      They need to come out with mlok handguards and a slim line stock, for one. That's not going to take off a lot of pounds but it would be better than the buttpad stock with cheek riser and pic rails. Polymer ammo would be interesting too.

    I had a 10.3 HK complete upper that I swapped a 14.5" brownells heavy barrel into (M27 profile) and it's my favorite rifle. Pinned and welded dead air flash hider and a shorty "K " suppressor and it's so damn good. Just an aero lower, B5 stock and bcm grip and trigger. It's chunky yes but it stays accurate when smoking hot- where my other guns tend to open the groups up. I have a 12'' M-lok rail on mine instead of the 9" qaud rail but I want an 11" quad like on the IAR so bad.....if you don't mind the weight- even in semi-auto only it is a GREAT and very capable set-up. The ACOG/piggy back or EO-tech w/magnifier is a good way to go with optics on them......1-8 works too but your getting heavy. Thanks for this one gentlemen.......I love the whole M27 concept.

  • @connorsproles9239
    @connorsproles9239 8 місяців тому +2

    First, let me just say that I greatly respect the Marine corps their great con: they wanted a new service weapon, but didn't want to be stuck in a long, drawn out bidding war. SO! they put out a contract for a "SAW replacement," but wrote the criteria so that they could basically rule out any LMG. They then select the H&K, and then changed their unit make up to make everyone an "automatic rifleman." They just con'ed the entire defense industry and congress so that they could buy the gun they wanted. Pretty bad ass.
    HOWEVER! what they did not do was adopt a weapon that can replace the saw. You cannot replace a belt fed, open bolt machinegun with a 30 round, box fed assault rifle; And, to be fair, They haven't tried to. They replaced the M16 with a rifle that is better at sustained fire and that as a combined unit you could remove the need for a lmg gunner entirely. I personally do not think this will work out, and feel that they should have pushed for a better LMG, but I admit that only time will decide the validity of the change.

    • @fridrekr7510
      @fridrekr7510 7 місяців тому

      I honestly think it makes more sense to just give everyone assault rifles capable of sustained fire (basically the M27). Part of the original assault rifle concept was that riflemen could switch between moving and covering each other with rapid fire, instead of having to wait on the machine guns to catch up with the riflemen before the next push. Spreading out the firepower in the squad also means the squad won't lose most of its firepower if the machine gun goes down. But I don't understand why Americans had the SAW either. Our infantry squads have one or two 7.62x51mm LMGs carried and manned by one machine gunner each. So I don't see why Americans need a 2-3 man team to operate an M240 in a dedicated machine gun squad at platoon level.

    HK Fans: please give a civilian version of the MP7 or a non-bastardized 416 (I.e. chrome lined barrel). HK: No, we hate you. Also, the Marine Corp just wanted a new service rifle. German government regulates what HK can and cant sell to the civilian market. This has been covered ad nauseam at this point. Usually the next response is "this is America and if they really wanted to they could" the answer to that once again covered previously is "its simply not that easy, they are a German company that has to follow and abide by German law" its simlar to how we here in the US cant just export whatever we want wherever we want cause of government regulation.

      If and when it's fully approved and issued, yes the Marines will adopt the M7 and M250. The m27 was a backdoor way to replace the m4/m16 in Frontline service. This is obvious when it replaced more than just the M249. It was also implemented as a squad DMR and eventually entire squads were issued M27 and still retained one or two M249s

    They talk a lot about the BCG staying cool under full auto fire, but bow much of an advantage is that? The bcg getting too hot was never a problem on the DI guns. The gas tube and the barrel are always the areas that will fail under a lot of full auto. And what they don't say about the piston guns is that the front of the handguard still gets super hot, to the point that you will have to adjust your grip further back.
    Everybody is saying how this really wasn't supposed to be replacing the SAW, but rather it was a workaround for the Marines to get a new primary rifle (which the M27 makes way more sense for).
    I just don't see how all that front heavy weight is better and more manageable, especially considering that the marines are putting suppressors on the muzzle. The thing is gonna wind up being just as long and unwieldy as an M16, in addition to being heavier.
    They also tout reliability, but piston driven ARs are gassed much harder than DI guns, which then compounds even harder with a can on the front. These guns are going to beat themselves to death pretty quickly with all of that overgassing.
    I'm glad the Marines got new rifles, God knows they needed new equipment. I just don't know if this configuration was the right choice.

    PMAGs actually are 25% heavier than an Aluminum magazine. It’s a common misconception that polymer magazines are lighter due to them being made out of molded plastics. So there are no weight savings by using PMAGs, certainly not 2.5lbs across a combat load-out.

I can't see how the Marines gave up a light machine gun for just another rifle. The SAW is a force multiplier and I think this rifle is a step back to the days of the BAR.
