It'll be the true Med 3 total war once they finish over-hauling all the city maps - that will be it for me Otherwise for Med 3...officially? CA gonna have to do something special on that one haha
I have to admit, I don't like this mod. I know this opinion is heretical, but I just can't get along with the campaign map. I really dislike the way the buildings work. I much preferred how it was in vanilla Attila. I would have preferred if they had just made the campaign gameplay the same as vanilla, but with a Medieval setting, factions and units. Anyway, great to see a review of a mod for Attila, my favourite TW game :-)
Some legends say that Gudea and the 1212 historian have duelled three days and three nights on the peak of a Cappadocian mountain, before solving their controversy
I really enjoyed this review, especially the faction overview section! You have the knowledge and temperament of a true historian! I love having historical videos / documentaries on in the background while I play TW games, it’s something I’ve always done oddly enough. Especially longer videos(such as this one)! I just booted up 1212ad, going to have another go a Kingdom of Castile campaign! My last campaign I ended up attempting to complete the reconquista way too hastily, and ended up getting obliterated by an almohad+marinid+Portuguese triumvirate within 40 turns lol. This time I will take a more diplomatic and safe approach. Oh and not declare war on Portugal lol. Thank you for this review! Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the overview! To be fair, even official Total War games are riddled with historical inaccuracies, so I personally don't mind granting a mod a little leeway
Great review! Really like the historical context for the faction overview. How accurate do you recon the stated populations are for each faction? A quick Google search says the population of Europe was about 56 million around the year 1000. It seems like the sum of the populations for the factions in this game would fall quite a bit short of that.
New to this game and was having a go at the Principality of Antioch, kept my eye on Jerusalem and after several turns was asked to help the crusaders hold Egypt, at this point I noticed the whole middle east and africa already kissing the mat. Guess I wasn't paying as much attention as I should.
I don't mind the city placement on the map, they've added so much to flesh out the campaign and mod in general it's one of those things I can overlook, kind of like how i've come to overlook the lack of unit collision in battles.
@@GudeaTW Sadly I don't think anyone can fix the campaign to make it compatible with the Medieval setting. CA hardcoded the map for w/e reason. We may just have stick to the fleeting hope CA makes a Medieval 3, I guess with magic and op single entity Richard the Lionhearts and Saladins running around.
@@GudeaTW Have you tried the Medieval Warfare mod for Attila yet? It might be right up your alley. They have an updated campaign map it seems with actual medieval city models for the campaign and battle map. It's just lacking in campaign features atm.
57:07 They are best buddies with the Georgians in the mod. Because if that, the Caucasus is a bit harder to conquer because there are 4 factions in the area that are in a strong alliance with eachother. The main reason why the Ildegizids are a difficult faction.
Great review, A+ for the ability to pronounce all the names. I bought this game just for this mod! Thanks for the historical accuracy, too many take this lightly. History is sacred! By the way the new music is just hauntingly beautiful. One VERY nice highlight of TW series is the ability to rotate the camera 360 degrees.
As a naturalised swiss person, it bothers me that they use the Canton of Schwyz as the Swiss faction… Bern would make a lot more sense as it was most aggressive and one of the richest cantons (also the capital of the faction is Bern so just make it Bern, also YB!). My first campaign was early Byzantium in the original Medieval
This is a great review, thank you so much for taking time showing every faction, its one of my biggest gripes when seeing many mod reviews on youtube is when the youtubers dont show all the playable factions. I really liked listening to your insight on all these. This mod looks great, there's so much there already and they still have more to go, thats wild!
The cool thing about picking kingdom of Cilicia is when you capture the provinces of Van and Dvin you can change your kingdoms name to Kingdom of Armenia!! It’s soooo fun! 👑 🇦🇲 ⚔️
I beg to differ about the Second Bulgaria Tsardom. Ivan Asen II was a great diplomat. He made many treaties and got quite a bit of territories due to diplomacy and dynastic marriages.
@@GudeaTW I see. My point is that in the exact period the mod is set, (around 1220) Ivan Assen II becomes Tsar and is one of the wisest and best diplomats in whole Europe.
@@GudeaTW I once started a game as them simply to see if you can immediately convert to Eastern Christianity, and you can. But that doesn't account for the AI, who most certainly won't be converting turn 1.
@@GudeaTW So I just got the chance to talk to a 1212 dev about it and they said the one biggest problem is the fact that you can't recruit military order units or construct military order buildings as Eastern Christians. Apparently, the Hospitalers and Teutonic order had a fairly significant presence in Cilicia; and being Catholic (as they technically claimed to convert to so to get support from Europe), they can build military order buildings to recruit crusading units. Hopefully, someone can make a submod that starts the faction out as Eastern Christian.
Probably my favorite mod when it comes to the Warscape engine games. Oh, also regarding the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, if you pick one of the Iberian factions or the Almohids, the campaign actually starts at that battle for them, so if you play as the Almohads you can reverse history right away.
I love playing as Zagwe and Merkuria as it takes real skill to go up through Muslim power to the north and get back into the mix of things. I wish I had better cavalry and more money of course. However if you are patient you can conquer north as the Muslim kingdoms become preoccupied with the Kingdom of Jerusalem. By the time they realize what is happening you can have Alexandria under your domination. Once that happens you become more secure in your position and your economy vastly improves. I also like the 1100 AD campaign for Rome II with the different mechanics.
I'm happy you had that disagreement with the historian because when you finally did review this mod out of guilt perhaps you did such an extensive review of the mod. also, they did update the game again, seems much more fleshed out would appreciate a play through/ update video or anything else related to this mod. You can extend building slots up to 10 slots. But it's more useful after the early game essentially when your already the strongest faction. I generally build food, port, sanitation and a guard house, I tend to stop playing before doing much more building slots, however my Abbasid campaign lasted ages and I used the heck out of them. But this issue is also apparent for technology, like I would like to build libraries to speed up research but I need my building slots for other things. Tech tree is way to long at the moment
I assume that the reason they don't move cities is that it would be very hard to maintain it with updates, as you would have to do it again and again after processing a new startpos file.
It's a fantastic mod, and the fact that they got a campaign is really good. Dawnless Days is building up from the scratch, but these are great mods for Attila
Bit late, but Id strongly recommend it with a real warning: The previous version of 1212 was a great game with maybe 1-2 provinces that would always rebel. The current version has a much poorer economy with way more rebels and that just isnt as much fun

This mod is stunning on first glance. The "wow" factor of playing 1212 guarantees a positive first impression. Then there's that general desperation among many historical fans 16 years later for that Medieval 3 they've been denied. I think those two factors have a blinding effect on many who play this mod's campaign. I'd like to add some food for thought, because I think it's odd that you call the mod a masterpiece when there's so many objectively broken things in it. Agents that can't perform actions. Islamic factions that can't stabilize income, public order, and santitation due to poorly balanced buildings. The all-walled cities change simply doesn't work, it makes the campaign way too easy because the AI is terrible at attacking walls and will hardly ever attack you. And there's the poor campaign pacing. Attila is 4 turns per year yet 1212 is 2 turns per year, but isn't balanced for 2 so governors die too fast and provinces become unmanagable without mass-converting enemy priests, which because of 2 turns per year now die of old age as fast as you can replace them with new converts. This makes empire management in 1212 very tedious and repetitive. Or you can stabilize your cities with new buildings unlocked after dozens of turns of research. Except each tech takes 10 or 20 turns to research, which is simply the mod wasting your time with padding because of how few techs there are, so research often feels like a waste of time because it takes so long to get to anything worthwhile. I could forgive some of these issues since it's a mod but they've all been around since the mod first released in 2019 and there are no signs that any of it will ever be fixed. Another reason I have a hard time forgiving these problems is that many of the broken things aren't new features added by 1212, they are default features of Attila that work fine in the vanilla campaign but 1212 broke, and still hasn't fixed over 2 years later. And sometimes it *is* the 1212 features that break. No mention in the video that the HRE elector script randomly breaks around turn 150 much of the time, which is one of the most commonly reported issues with the campaign on the Discord. There's so much wrong with this mod and I find it unfortunate that review like this one can spend 90 minutes glossing over all those glaring campaign problems just because they are enthralled by the mediecal aesthetic they've been waiting 16 years for in a TW game. I know this is not the best use of my time but if I can save someone a few hours of their life and 30 dollars from their wallet because they saw this video and decided to buy Attila for 1212, then I think my time was not wasted. Maybe one day the mod will be the masterpiece you say it is, the potential is there, but it is absolutely not there yet.
I agree with a lot of your points! It is fun, but it definitely isn't there yet, and due to engine limitations it may never get there. And as I say in the video, I have seen certain members of the team be very non-receptive to constructive, polite criticism
In you opinion is there anything besides Stainless Steel these days? I haven't kept up the last few years, but I wouldn't want to play a lesser experience tbh. Stainless Steel has it's issues, but offers so much nonetheless
Hi l loved this video as I am currently only playing 1212 since months didn’t touch another game One point : for a veteran player I played as Volga Bulgaria on legendary and reached 400 turns and its absolutely one of the best campaigns in any historical game
@@GudeaTW MEDIEVAL WARFARE I have just played this and would say that it is better than Medieval 1212 completely amazing watch the video I sent. I got the link of the developer and the game is on steam.
I wouldnt consider it medieval 3, but its for sure a good QoL update for people that love medieval 2 but hate the UI, AI, old style graphics. its a great alternative for those that really love the style of the era, but dislike the jank of old. Though playing this just makes you drool over the thought of a medieval 3 on the newer engine, as three kingdoms is absolutely stunning minus all its flaws. I think of it more of a medieval 2.5 rather than a 3, expecting modders to make a full game within a game is just unfair to them tbh, especially one of this scale and not just adding some new units/buildings/stat changes. Great review though, your voice was easy to listen to, and you obviously know a lot about the era. Which is another thing, i think since you know SO much about the era, when you see something off it irks you, I know very little about the era, but i love the style, the art, the types of weapons, so when something is off, tbh i dont notice it, because i dont know the subject, i just like to play games.
All I know is that a slight remaster of M2TW consisting only of some campaign innacuracy fixes, a faction limit removal + a crash to desktop on mods and vanilla fix plus may be also some bug fixes) will be by far the best Total War game ever. They shouldn't even touch the graphics, they're perfect. Modders will take care of the rest.
@@Dexusaz Medieval 2 battles are terrible, probably the worst in the series. It's battle engine sucks and is downgrade to Rome 1. Shogun 2 and Attila battles on the other hand are the best in the series, on par with Rome 1.
33:16 Actually Georgia acquiring Armenian territories was some sort of reconquista. Prior to Seljuk invasion Armenian lands were ruled by Bagratunis and Georgian dynasty of Bagrationi was closely related to them. In short, idea of taking major Armenian cities was liberation and then legitimacy to rule came from dynastical ties with Armenian lands plus Christianity after several decades of Muslim rule. Also to give a little bit of insight, "Golden Age" played negative factor in the battle against Khwarezmians because by that time there were several distinct factions in Georgian kingdom fighting for influence. Already well established Armeno-Kurdish Zakarids were contested by emerging Georgian house of Akhaltsikhe. Zakarids were commanders in chief of Georgian army for decades already while Akhaltsikhe guys led vanguard in later times. When the vanguard clashed with Khwarezmians in the battle Zakarid commander didn't send any reinforcement from main army and left the battlefield without a fight. After the defeat (in Armenian territory) everyone went to their castles with sizable armies to hide and left the country defenseless so Khwarezmian army freely besieged Georgian capital and sacked it. Key factor in this situation was also weak female ruler who could not really control nobles anymore and couldn't gather forces. Giorgi died of wounds after several clashes with initial Mongol expeditionary forces led by Jebe and Subutai and being without a legitimate heir throne went to his sister.
I don't suppose you'll review a mod call "medieval mod 1191" for medieval 2? I recently found it while scrolling through moddb and I think it's one of the more complete mods for medieval 2, even if it does still need some work. This video just reminded me of it.
Thank you Gudea for this great post. I’m very saddened however as Atilla TW has quit working for me for some time. There is currently a thread on Steam speaking about this issue at great length as countless users are unable to get this game to work or it’s mods like 1212AD. Many of us have tried the proposed solutions posted in the thread or online but nothing is working. At least on my end. Rumours are that the developers have quit their support for this game and this would be the reason for the fact that so many can no longer enjoy this title or it’s mods. Some people debate that it’s the mods themselves that make the game no longer playable. Which I find odd as I have deleted and reinstalled the game several times to no success… Would love to know your take on this if you have the time to look into it? I don’t want to throw CA into the fire pit just yet as I am not sure if they are responsible for this mess. Thank you for the feedback! Mash potatoes always taste great
It's one of the best mods for Total War: Attila in my opinion. In terms of factions though I was kind of disappointed that they added so many but refused to include some cultures like the Irish and Welsh, but instead gave us several almost identical Byzantine factions to play as. I would have a preferred an Irish faction with unique Gaelic units instead of three Eastern Roman ones with identical units. With that said, I agree it's a masterpiece as you said - one of the most impressive Total War mods ever created.
what the hell do you mean by refused???? the mod is still a work in progress wales is already complete it just needs to be added to campaign ireland is still being worked on the dev of ireland is currently making custom medieval settlements

I love this mod. The only issue i have i think is more an ATW issue. Once you quickly solve public order, its way too easy to steamroll everyone as a christian nation. Does anyone else agree? Or maybe I'm playing easy factions. (England, Byzan, France)
when your complaining about *oddly placed cities* just remember that this is a mod set on the game which had a starting date of 395 AD and modders have not yet figured out how to change the locations of cities and actually make the AI follow it was pretty annoying how you tried to seem smart by calling out the the odd locations of cities that were obvious
I think I made myself pretty clear (also there are mods that change city locations, as I mention in the video, and the team is working on a reworked map as far as I know)

Stainless Steel has it's issues, but offers so much nonetheless
the map expansion to the mod will somtimes come they will make the map new so new states in norway germany in the east
what is that song playing in the background so beautifully?? is it from the game or the mod? sounds very familiar but just can't recall
Hi l loved this video as I am currently only playing 1212 since months didn’t touch another game
One point : for a veteran player I played as Volga Bulgaria on legendary and reached 400 turns and its absolutely one of the best campaigns in any historical game
The amount of detail in this mod is phenomenal for sure
23:40 wait wait I don't know it. Great now I have to go the decometry channels after this
Well, I would think a good chunk of the population learns about the union between Castile and Aragon that created the Kingdom of Spain...
Greta review on the factions!
Thank you!
@@GudeaTW MEDIEVAL WARFARE I have just played this and would say that it is better than Medieval 1212 completely amazing watch the video I sent. I got the link of the developer and the game is on steam.
Will give it a try
@@GudeaTW really underestimated.
Miaphysite/Apostolic in terms of the church but spot on when it comes to Cilician Armenia.. very impressive good sir!
The factions that have placeholders descriptions are due to them simply not been done. They will however, be in the next update.
Well, yes...
7k subs wow man
Congrats!
Thank you!
@@GudeaTW np
All I know is that a slight remaster of M2TW consisting only of some campaign innacuracy fixes, a faction limit removal + a crash to desktop on mods and vanilla fix plus may be also some bug fixes) will be by far the best Total War game ever.
They shouldn't even touch the graphics, they're perfect. Modders will take care of the rest.
Also fixing the bugginess of pathfinding/battle engine (unit collision, etc.)..
@@GudeaTW yeah true, but other than that and what I mentioned, it would be amazing.
Agreed, even vanilla Medieval 2 is still better than this mod, simply because Warscape engine sucks bad and battles are absolutely terrible.
@@Dexusaz Medieval 2 battles are terrible, probably the worst in the series. It's battle engine sucks and is downgrade to Rome 1. Shogun 2 and Attila battles on the other hand are the best in the series, on par with Rome 1.
Agreed, med 2 battle engine is worse than rome 1 (modders can tell you that too)
Do I need to understand Atilla systems in order to play this? I own Atilla but I failed learning it more than 3 times.
It's a little less complex
Will take a look
Is that the Witcher 3 music played on a violin? Great video also
It's just medieval 1 music
I only have 6 building slots on every settlement
Very surprised how much you know about Cilician Armenia!
Great mod, but I prefer Chivalry for Rome Remastered. It's just so much more moddable.
Thank you haha
Thank you Gudea for this great post.
I’m very saddened however as Atilla TW has quit working for me for some time. There is currently a thread on Steam speaking about this issue at great length as countless users are unable to get this game to work or it’s mods like 1212AD. Many of us have tried the proposed solutions posted in the thread or online but nothing is working. At least on my end.
Rumours are that the developers have quit their support for this game and this would be the reason for the fact that so many can no longer enjoy this title or it’s mods.
Some people debate that it’s the mods themselves that make the game no longer playable. Which I find odd as I have deleted and reinstalled the game several times to no success…
Would love to know your take on this if you have the time to look into it?
I think the focus on the byzantine rump states is well warranted given the start date... agree with everything else!
what the hell do you mean by refused????
the mod is still a work in progress
wales is already complete it just needs to be added to campaign
ireland is still being worked on the dev of ireland is currently making custom medieval settlements
Great video. How do you know so much about this topic? Any book recommendations for learning about the medieval period?

@@GudeaTW where is the Problem ???
Hello! I would like to know if have some method to start the campaign already in 15th century, with tier 3 units already developed or even already appearing to upgrade? Like some submods or some things like this?
haven't seen one unfortunately. there are era campaigns in Chivalry remastered (like in Medieval 1)
excellent review.
Thank you!
the cities has been replaced already ?
I believe so, I haven't checked out the latest release yet
A review of Age of Charlemagne, in the future?
I actually don't have that one, but I know it has nice mods I'd like to check out
I really like this mod

Great vid! Is the 1st Medieval Total War music bulit in or is it some sub mod or smth?
There are some medieval 1 tracks in there thankfully, but buried by a lot of others
and new cities in ireland
Man ur playing on old version
The video isn't that new...
I love this mod. The only issue i have i think is more an ATW issue. Once you quickly solve public order, its way too easy to steamroll everyone as a christian nation. Does anyone else agree? Or maybe I'm playing easy factions. (England, Byzan, France)
Well England and France are easier yes
when your complaining about *oddly placed cities* just remember that this is a mod set on the game which had a starting date of 395 AD
and modders have not yet figured out how to change the locations of cities and actually make the AI follow it
was pretty annoying how you tried to seem smart by calling out the the odd locations of cities that were obvious
I think I made myself pretty clear (also there are mods that change city locations, as I mention in the video, and the team is working on a reworked map as far as I know)
@@GudeaTW no there arent any mods of that particular order
TDD team themselves are working on a tool to edit the map for their campaign
and the 1212 team is just waiting for the work on that tool to be finished
edit : if there are any mods like that then link them to me im eager to know about these *mods*
