Good video but a little out of date on the prices. Jakarta is just as expensive as most big American or asian cities. Street food is still relatively inexpensive it restaurants are not. A good meal in a decent restaurant in Jakarta can easily be &150 or more for two

Great video. Everything I wanted to know about Indonesia without all the dumb touristy stuff. What do you know about the authorities there? If I were to get attacked by a local is there police I can call?

@Ethereal8dream. Glad you liked it. I have read that, in most cases, the locals will protect the locals and not the foreigner, even the authority figures. So, it was advised that you don't fight back, you could file a report but it will most likely be buried with other paper work. Some may argue this point but just be mindful yourself of the do's and don'ts, it's a bit of the wild, wild west in certain places, it's especially the case in most of Southeast asia.
But, keep in mind as well, that crime is crime and is the same everywhere. Petty thief is an occurrence, especially against tourists, but the more severe crimes are rare here. Just do what you would do back home, don't walk into those dark alley ways during the night etc.

I'm an Indonesian, I think the police will help u depends on how good their English. Our people do not speak English fluently such as Singaporean, Malaysian or Philipines. The first problem must be the language, then the big different cultures with the Western, our legal & justice, and religions. But dont worried if ure nice to the local people they would be nicer to u, sometimes thats make the foreigners being afraid or questioning their kindness (do they want something from me?) Absolutely NO. We're just nice, friendly people & care to much with others.

You are most unlikely to attacked, in the sense that we would be in the west. However, almost anyone who has spent a lot of time in Indonesia will have been the victim of some sort of plot to defraud them. In my case this involved elaborate plans to kill me and my family. When I suggested that we should inform the police everyone just laughed at me.

There are more than 17000 islands in Indonesia and only few islands are tourist destinations. Why? Because those other islands are not safe for tourists. Bali's indigenous people have good culture, but unfortunately there's no way to stop radicals or criminals from other places from coming in.

More often tourists are acosted by panhandlers than radicals, but Indonesia is a big country, and sooner or later everything happens. There are far more tourists destinations than those mentioned. Probably, the poster is hesitant to send you places where you will feel less comfortable because there can be more "know before you go" issues. I hear Yogyakarta still gets more tourists than Bali because it's the main tourist draw among Indonesian nationals. Other destinations are being geared for Singaporean, Chinese and Japanese tourists. It doesn't mean you can't have a good time, but Bali and the Gili islands are a far better introduction to Indonesia for western tourists.

I am an American who has lived in Manado, Surakarta, Jakarta, and Surabaya. Although Bali is awesome to visit, I don’t like areas that have a ton of tourists. These areas have less than Bali, but if more people knew more about areas like these, their tourism would skyrocket. Most of Indonesia is very beautiful and the people friendly.

Timor Leste is an ex Portuguese colony and now an independent nation. Close proximity to Australia. There are many planned communities around Jakarta, complete with schools, malls and hospital. Essentially a self contained community. Check out PIK2, BSD City etc. To protect the locals, foreigner cannot buy properties but the can "buy" mega mansions. If I am not mistaken, they must sell after 30 years.

@Kiam Oey. Thank you for your information. So, we are allowed to buy mega mansions but have to sell after 30 years, interesting.
