Sisu as a word first appeared outside of Finland in a Time Magazine article on the Winter War of 1939. I'm sooo confused right now. I just saw my first trailer for this movie ten minutes ago and now here's a review. For a good movie, marketing dropped the ball.
The marketing was simple, they released a trailer with a bunch of random action scenes and then throughout the trailer said this is the greatest trailer ever made. Not only were they so egotistical that they thought their own trailer was the greatest trailer ever made, but they kept pushing it to the point that they try to make it the biggest thing ever, and what's worse is they hid behind the label that they're the same people that made John Wick and the fact that this movie is about saving a dog. They pretty much pulled on the heartstrings of people to get people to like this movie while also having an inflated ego to the point that you say that your trailer is the greatest trailer ever released. This movie is a film I will not support simply due to the fact that they're so full of themselves and it makes me not want to watch the film. I'll just go re-watch John Wick 4 again.

"Sisu is a unique Finnish concept. It is a Finnish term that can be roughly translated into English as strength of will, determination, perseverance, and acting rationally in the face of adversity." Greetings from Finland. I already saw it months ago since it came earlier to cinema here in Finland. After all those 3 hour marvel movies its refreshing to see a movie that keeps things simple. Just one guy against a group of nazis. Loved the gore and how brutal the action was. Jorma Tommila was also made for this role, cant think of any other Finnish actor who could have pulled this of. The last 1/3 gets little bit goofy with cheesy dialog(in the wrong way) and the last action sequence felt too over the top compared to the rest of film. But in overall, a solid film, would love to see this character again.

I'm going to have to throw in a quick comment about the plane "disintegrating" at the end of the movie. The plane dove indeed into a large swamp (quite recognizable to local folk). Apparently these swamps can reach the depths of even 10 meters, although 2-4 meters is more common. Still nonsensical, but I guess that's what they were going with. Regardless, if you fall into an eye of a swamp, it can be damn near impossible to pull yourself out on your own. Apparently this guy did just that. I think the story of this man is a kind of an exaggerated amalgamation of all of the stories behind many of the Mannerheim Cross recipients. The young corporal decided that they needed additional support, and dashed away. To get his message through, he had to cross terrain covered by fire from 10 heavy machine guns, more than 10 light machine guns, other infantry weapons, as well as heavy mortar fire. Getting through to the own forces, he was then able to call in artillery support to save his company. A year later the Soviet Union attacked and captured a Finnish strongpoint codenamed ‘Sevastopol’. Gerdt volunteered to take part in the counterattack to recapture it, and according to the records charged forward as the first man. Armed with a sub-machine gun and hand grenades, he took out tens of enemies, always heading for where the fighting was the fiercest. He also dragged the mortally wounded captain Toffer, another Mannerheim Knight, back to the Finnish lines, after which he swiftly returned to the battlefield. His example is quoted as playing an important role in ensuring that the counterattack succeeded. Shortly after this he was decorated with the Mannerheim Cross, and in 1943 promoted to officer in the reserve, taking part in course number 57. Yeah exactly. I mean he literally crawled out of the swamp. I wonder if these guys always talk throughout the movie cause seems like they miss certain elements they gripe about.
I’m from Finland and a big fan of your channel. It makes me happy for you to notice our country, even if its over the top action film like this. We are usually pretty invisible to the rest of the world.
nobody is noticing your country because they made a movie. it's just a movie. movies are made all over the world and 99.9% of the audiences have no clue where movies are made or shot. Hollywood shot more motion pictures in Canada last year than they did in the US according to the film institute.... and nobody knows...or cares. where movies are made is meaningless and not representative of that specific country's film industry.
8:06 I think people forget that First Blood was a slow drama for most of the film, not an action packed slaughterfest. A great movie, my favorite Rambo, but Rambo First Blood II was more when the series went full on action.
The plane hitting the ground was bit stupid, but they did try to justicy it by having it hit and be swallowed by a peat swamp that are prelevant in northern finland.
I think the wreckage from the final plane crash may have cost too much, coz every scene with the large plane was a CGI plane, maybe CGI wreckage would have looked too bad and they couldn't afford to make physical wreckage so they made the decision to show no wreckage at all. Him surviving the big crash was the single most unbelievable part, but the film gets a pass anyway, it was pure hard-hitting entertainment from start to end!
Rare Exports is another must watch by the same director, share the same main character and one of the young nazi's was the main kid actor in it. It's one of those movies I watch every Xmas.
It's a shame that gems like these are only shown in selected theaters as many will miss out on this. I know its not a major big budget Hollywood production but I wish they would have put a little more time and money into marketing so it would reach a bigger audience which it deserves.
glad you americans enjoyed this film. i am from lapland and i've actually hiked through similar ground where this was filmed and its outstanding to just be there and gaze on the far horizon.
Finnish man during world war 2 era were more hardy that the main character in Sisu. And during Winter War were Finnish fought by themselfs against Sovient Union, was full of Tall Tale but real stories: Here is one of them. Called, miracle of Winter War. 1939. Sovient Union attacks Finland. Infantry company 40 that is made from senior citizens of Finland, with poor military equipment, is doing military refresher course, when company leader Major Armas Perksalo get note, that puts Ic40 into the war. Armas and his senior company had impossible task at hand. Their job was to stop Sovient Union attacks and prevent them to go Sweden through Salla mountain. 1500 soldiers Ic40 included went against 20 000 Sovient Union soldiers. 18 december 1939. You could get anything from the sky: Water, snow, anything. And temperature was between minus 86°F and minus 104°F. Weather during that time was extraordinary. To Finns it was advantage, as Finns didn't have any high tech equipment of that time like tanks, or cars. To Sovient it was bad. Part of the Finnish 1500 men decided to flank Sovient troops, but Finns didn't have any way of contacting to other Finns so nobody knew what anybody was doing. So Finns troops were scattered all around battlefield without knowing what others were doing, because of this Sovient troops started to be scared and panic as they heard sound of war all around them. They started feel like there were billions of Finns, that were everywhere. And all the sudden a Sovient soldier dropped dead into his truck. It was last drop to Sovient. In terror and panic they retreat, as weather was horrible nothing worked and they got kicked ass by punch of senior citizens who seemed to be all around them. Finns won that battle. And today on that same battlefield is a memorial stone that reads: "God was with us." We Finns are hardy in real life too, almost as if we were biological Terminators with luck of Han Solo.
The only reason I knew this movie even existed is because a movie theatre near my university has msytery movie nights every other Monday and they were showing Sisu last week
I planned on watching it tonight but it isn't showing in any of my local theaters in Missouri. The closest one is 2 hours away. I called my local movie theaters and they didn't know why they aren't playing it. They said to check back next week and they might have it then.
My wife and I really enjoyed the movie overall, that ridiculous ending aside. It was great and gory action, I was honestly surprised she went along to see it and enjoyed it herself. By the time our guy was going down in the plane, I was laughing my head off in joy, going along with the absurdity of the escalating events. Very fun time, and I'm happy y'all enjoyed it together!
To make a hollywood looking action flick with a 6mill.. it's the embodiment of sisu in itself as a finnish guy. You just make it happen, build a solid beautifull table with some scrap wooden sticks if you have no other means or choice.
Whenever I hear WW2 and gold heist combined in a movie, I remember Kelly's War with Clint Eastwood. Different tone, of course, but one of my favorite WW2 movies.
I think I'm going to drive a couple hours over to the closest city playing this to see it tomorrow. If not tomorrow then definitely next week. *Edit Just got back from seeing this. Yes, an incredible movie. A few things where you reallllly have to suspend disbelief but I'm ok with it because I view this movie as a retelling of a legend of this man. Most stories get more and more embellished in the retelling, So in this telling, a bunch of his feats esp near the end are almost superhuman. But I didn't care. Nazis getting destroyed? Hell ya! Im going to buy this when I can.
i actually had got a early screening of Sisu from a mystery movie event but funny enough a lot of familes left the theater because they had no idea what movie it was go to be and yup it was amazing
That last part with the planecrash is about swamps. The are tons of wetlands/swamps in Finland and there are tales of people surviving huge drops to swamps.
I went and saw this in theater yesterday, definitely worth it if you enjoy action movies. I was the only person in my showing so I am guessing this is going to fly under most people’s radar.
9:24 The moment Alex said 9 I paused the video and went to watch to 10pm show the next day... And I'm back to watch the whole video after Alex's verdict 🔥😂
I seriously do not understand why this movie is getting a ton of praise. The only aspect of this film that is above average is the use of gore, but outside of that everything else is either stale or incredibly predictable. From a filmmaking point of view nothing here is above average. The acting, cinematography, story, music, etc feel so tired. Bargin bin john wick but done a decade later with a lower budget.
Namesake Alex is as close as you can get to The Critical Drinker here at Angry Joe's... and if he's this excited about this film. This is a MUST WATCH!
That is literally the worst insult you can give Alex. Critical drinker is the right up there with The Quartering in terms turning anti SJW rage into successful UA-cam business. You can't go 5 min into any of his videos without hearing a rant about diversity.
I'd rather go watch John Wick again, the fact that they skimmed off the coattails of the John Wick by claiming this is made by the same people, let alone the ego to say in the first trailer released that this is the greatest trailer ever made, is enough reason for nobody to support this hot garbage. The only reason this film will do well as because they coasted off the coattails of John Wick by using that in their trailer. Rather go see John Wick 4 again lol.
As a Finn, very happy to see this review. Personally I agree with AJ with his two points taking the number from 10 to 9. I Liked Sisu more than John Wick 4, because EVERYONE had magic suits which were bulletproof, and EVERYONE was supposed to be secret super-agent. It was like a parody of John Wick. Sisu has few issues, but still much less.
Now I know I need to see this 🎉 Just so great to get good Finnish movie available globally. Thanks for reviews and special🎉 for manscaped adds. Happy for OJ😂❤ from Finland with love❤
The fight scenes just like John Wick are over the top to the point of stupid very unrealistic looking. However people just love the small man the weak oppressed human and seeing him fight back for the greater good.
Anybody, correct if I'm wrong but didn't the Angry crew have issues with John Wick for being a bit quiet and now giving high marks to sisu for being a silent protag. No problem just curious 🤔
There is a difference between an entirely silent protagonist, and a protagonist that says something but too little compared to the run-time. The point of a silent protagonist is that he/she is silent. The point of a talking protagonist is dialogue. It's about expectations.
The people who made John Wick know their shit. I hope they continue this momentum with other culturally based movies. Kinda take it in a Assassins Creed type direction, but make less "climb this big ass tower" and more like "tell this dope ass story and filet this fish".
6 million USD but with a crisp pacing, cinematography and choreography, this is much better than any average action Hollywood movie, any MCU or any market movie. Such an impressive movie.
I'd like to point out that Aatami wasn't fighting for the Nazis, he fought in the Winter War against the Soviet Union. The Winter War is a very short war (3 months) that took place in Finland in 1939-40 when the Soviets invaded the country. The finns where only defending themselves, not fighting with the nazis. Fun fact. In that war was born an actual real legend. His name was Simo Häyhä, a finnish sniper with 219 confirmed killes, though he is believed to have killed over 500 enemy soldiers during the Winter War. Maybe the Aatami character was losely based on him.
My opinion as a Finnish person is that many swamps at the northern periphery of Finland are actually quite deep and mostly water. So MAYBE the plane didn't actually pulverise or get disintegrated it could've been that the plane just "sunk underwater" and Aatami Korpi as the SisuMan survives the impact because he is a mythological immortal Finnish superhero
This is kinda what I wish Mario was like - simple story. Mario go save Luigi.. and the obstacles on the way ( in order for the audience to learn about the world) which is why I wish the siblings were the antagonist and bowser final bosss

It's amazing how a movie with very simple plot, straight forward motivation can be so interesting and fun to watch. This is a must watch.
Anyone looking for a Finnish ww2 flick about the Winter War should check out Unknown Soldier. Amazing action scenes.
Great movie indeed, I suggest watching the 2017 remake. They're set during the Continuation War though, not Winter War.
As a Finn it's always awesome to see Finnish movies get credit abroad as well. It's also great to see Jorma Tommila as the main character. He is one of my favorite Finnish actors
Can't wait! Unfortunately not available nearby so I have to drive a little further out to a smaller theater. But I'm hyped!
Its a swamp, not solid ground where the plane Lander.
In regards to the airplane, i think it landed into a marsh or bog of some sort, a rather deep one because the plane sank completely.
Ya, again, luck is on this guys side the gods are impressed at this guys gumption.
Yeah exactly. I mean he literally crawled out of the swamp. I wonder if these guys always talk throughout the movie cause seems like they miss certain elements they gripe about.
I feel so proud that a finnish movie is actually getting recognised outside Finland.
I saw this movie in February already because I'm Finnish.
I'm still salty you guys crapped all over The Northman last year. That movie rocked.
I am so interested in seeing this. My friend showed me the trailer yesterday, it looks great fun.
We love this movie and Finland. And your metal bands! And those old Nokia brick phones! And saunas!
not invisible to metal fans :) \m/
Just got back and damn I loved it. John wick spaghetti western is pretty accurate. It’s dumb over the top action in the best way possible.
I've been describing it as a cross between John Wick and (Don Rosa's) Scrooge McDuck
It's from the same makers of Johm Wick. That's why
@@JeruTheDamaja3I don’t think it is. Do you have a source for that?
You have to see the remade Unknown soldier movie from Finland too. One of the best war movies ever. PERKELE!
6 million dollars.... super low budget guys... not really a lot of money... I can only get like 7 Lamborghinis with that.
It's a shame that gems like these are only shown in selected theaters as many will miss out on this. I know its not a major big budget Hollywood production but I wish they would have put a little more time and money into marketing so it would reach a bigger audience which it deserves.
It will get the attention it deserves once it hits home streaming. More people are streaming than they are going out to the movies.
Don't worry too much, it's already streaming on Amazon
"He is not immortal, or invincible, he just refuses to die"
Lt. Aldo Raines approves of the film and wont be happy until he has his 100 Nazi scalps.
So glad you guys liked this movie. Torille! 🇫🇮🇫🇮🇫🇮❤
glad you americans enjoyed this film. i am from lapland and i've actually hiked through similar ground where this was filmed and its outstanding to just be there and gaze on the far horizon.
I saw trailer in front of Wick weeks ago. It worked. I wanted to see it just from that alone.
most badass scene, he points the pickaxe at the couple on the motorcicle, they have maschine guns, run anyway because the know they are fucked.
And today on that same battlefield is a memorial stone that reads: "God was with us."
We Finns are hardy in real life too, almost as if we were biological Terminators with luck of Han Solo.
The plane hit a swamp and sunk in there.
I've been excited for this ever since I saw the first trailer.
Greetings from Finland guys.
I'm glad you liked the movie
Lol it's a miracle the dog survived
The guy turned into an Avenger at the end and has more plot armor that would make Tom Cruise blush😄
I misread the title as "Sifu" I thought they make a movie from Sifu game lmao
To make a hollywood looking action flick with a 6mill.. it's the embodiment of sisu in itself as a finnish guy. You just make it happen, build a solid beautifull table with some scrap wooden sticks if you have no other means or choice.
Whenever I hear WW2 and gold heist combined in a movie, I remember Kelly's War with Clint Eastwood. Different tone, of course, but one of my favorite WW2 movies.
Simo Häyhä Aka the white death
Finnish sniper killed over 500 enemies. Believed to have the most kills out of any war. It would be a cool movie joe.
Man just wanna make a deposit😆
I think I'm going to drive a couple hours over to the closest city playing this to see it tomorrow. If not tomorrow then definitely next week. *Edit Just got back from seeing this. Yes, an incredible movie. A few things where you reallllly have to suspend disbelief but I'm ok with it because I view this movie as a retelling of a legend of this man. Most stories get more and more embellished in the retelling, So in this telling, a bunch of his feats esp near the end are almost superhuman. But I didn't care. Nazis getting destroyed? Hell ya! Im going to buy this when I can.
Yes, suspension of disbelief is a must. Good movie, I agree.
This is the closest thing we’re going to get to a Wolfenstein movie.
i actually had got a early screening of Sisu from a mystery movie event but funny enough a lot of familes left the theater because they had no idea what movie it was go to be and yup it was amazing
I do want to add that I used a new term for this movie ... "gripping"no matter how far fetched unrealistic it grips you right to the very end.
As a swede it is hard to admit, but the finnish are probably the last real men of Scandinavia. Great movie 💯
But we are not part of Scandinavia..
Fenno-scandinavia
@@pekkasiren4532 it's called fennoscandia, it is different meaning from Scandinavia.
Fennoscandia comprises the Scandinavian peninsula (Norway and Sweden), Finland and north-western Russia.
That last part with the planecrash is about swamps. The are tons of wetlands/swamps in Finland and there are tales of people surviving huge drops to swamps.
that ring he wears must have great stats
I went and saw this in theater yesterday, definitely worth it if you enjoy action movies. I was the only person in my showing so I am guessing this is going to fly under most people’s radar.
I saw the trailer when watching JW4 of all things. I didn't think much of it but maybe will reconsider tbh.
9:24
The moment Alex said 9
I paused the video and went to watch to 10pm show the next day...
If All AJ, OJ and Alex enjoyed the film, then it's definitely a must watch! ❤
Namesake Alex is as close as you can get to The Critical Drinker here at Angry Joe's... and if he's this excited about this film. This is a MUST WATCH!
Eh, Critical Drinker is a culture war mouthpiece. Pandering to his niche audience to get the click bait
I pass on this movie. Just seems like another movie with style but no substance. All these guys could talk about are the kills and gore.
@@Foxfire_forty-nine He's mostly just fed up with Hollywood and it's dumb politics. He makes solid points all around.
I loved this movie too.
I give this movie a 9 as well.
Must see movie
cant wait to rent it next week for 5$
I'm glad that in America is getting foreign movies and giving it a recognition like European and Indian movies
Saw it today. Wish more people knew about it. But wow.. having the theater almost all to myself.. so amazing.
I'd give it an 8. A very solid, entertaining action movie. And a Finnish one at that!
Plot twist: He's John Wick's grandpa
The people who made John Wick know their shit. I hope they continue this momentum with other culturally based movies. Kinda take it in a Assassins Creed type direction, but make less "climb this big ass tower" and more like "tell this dope ass story and filet this fish".
6 million USD but with a crisp pacing, cinematography and choreography, this is much better than any average action Hollywood movie, any MCU or any market movie. Such an impressive movie.
Euros, not dollars, but close enough.
This movie was the FIRST EVER movie i've seen TWICE in movie theater!
Predicting this one will appear in the RLM mid-year catch-up.
Loved the lake scene. The cinematography was great and it was amazingly brutal.
I still want to see a movie made about Lauri Törni aka Larry Thorne.
Maybe it should be a miniseries, on a second thought.
Rare Exports, have same actor and it is very special film too.
This is kinda what I wish Mario was like - simple story. Mario go save Luigi.. and the obstacles on the way ( in order for the audience to learn about the world) which is why I wish the siblings were the antagonist and bowser final bosss
If you like movies with little dialogue, you need to watch more Finnish movies. 🤘🇫🇮 (p.s. 'J' is pronounced 'Y', so Jorma is "Yor-mah")
