Just saw this on Friday night. Was such a badass movie. My only complaint is it was too short. If it was 2 hours long, I think it'd be even better. Such a great film, just wish it was a little bit longer. I'd definitely watch it again. Saw it with my best friend and another friend of mine.
The Raid and The Raid Berandal are better than any action movies ever made. They're in fact the two best action movies ever made, better than Predator, better than T2, better than Die Hards or Lethal Weapons....and I love those movies. Imo nothing comes close to the Raids. It's just a shame that it was overshadowed by the subpar and barely watchable JW.
Loved it, was great. It was playing at my local AMC in the Dolby Theater. One of the better experiences in the theater I've had in a long time. The minefield scene was insane and pure cinema goodness.
Holy shit, I was hoping for this one but wasn't really expecting it! Greetings from Finland, expect a few of us here 😅 Sisu is a common word in here, and there really isn't a direct translation of it. The movie does that quite well. You should check a finnish war movie The Unknown Soldier from 2017, it was quite a big release since it was our countrys 100 year anniversary too 😅
Even I, an American of half Finnish background know about Sisu and it is real! Been to Finland twice and it was a fantastic experience. I want to go back once more and visit the small town where my grandmother was born and raised as I did not really get much outside Helsinki.
Loving seeing Finland getting some recognition in the mainstream media/popculture media! Loved seeing this movie with my wife (who is Finnish) and she herself thoroughly enjoyed the film and loved how the story stayed true to the word “SISU.” There isn’t a definition to the word but man does the protagonist portray what it means to live by “Sisu” and what it means to be Finnish 🇫🇮!!
Stoked you are bringing awareness to this film as well. I got to see an early screening about 2 weeks ago and absolutely loved it!! I did a review of it as well on my channel. I’m always interested in hearing your perspective on things and I can’t wait for Shelby Oaks this year!! Cheers Chris!
We need more concepts like this, but NOT this type of “leave him hes dead when we know hes not dead and we can just shoot him now” crap. That was so unbelievable it was ridiculous.

Speaking of 80s movies and the ability to defy death brings Indiana Jones to mind. Jumping out of the plane on an inflatable dinghy is just part of the Indy's adventures. In all honesty most of the stuff, which happens in action movies, would either kill or put a normal person into a hospital. If we're thinking about a potential sequel for Sisu, he could immigrate to the US like the real life Finnish WW2 soldier Lauri Törni/Larry Thorne did. When he went MIA during the Vietnam War, people found it hard to believe, that he could actually have died. Funny thing about the Raid you mentioned is, that there's this humorous Finnish novel, TV and movie action hero character nicknamed Raid; getting his nickname after the insecticide and its Finnish slogan "Kills indoors and in the garden also". Similar kind of humor and dialogue with few words. Also funny thing is, that Jorma Tommila plays a bad guy in that film and he gets killed. A scene from that Raid movie: "Raid moottorisaha blondi". The dialogue goes something like: Sundman (the currently former adult shop keeper): "That blonde with a chainsaw, where did she go?" Raid: "She ran out of gas."
Just saw the movie and was blown away by the cinematography. I got 70's grindhouse flashbacks and rambo revenge vibes and that makes for a very entertaining ride.
Saw this yesterday at our film festival (HÕFF, Haapsalu Horror and Fantasy Film Festival). Wonderful experience and the movie was also voted the best movie of the festival.
Back in the mid 90’s I saw movie that I had never even heard of at the time , with three of my friends, and I still to this day have never laughed so hard in a theater. The movie was “There’s Something About Mary” and I was laughing I couldn’t help but punch the stranger to my right, in the arm, and he didn’t care one bit because he was laughing uncontrollably and too. My top movie experience to this day. Sometimes you just need to go see a movie without any pre knowledge or expectations.
Interesting what you said about a lot of people being there. I’m from India and went to see it last night and there was just a wide range of age groups seeing this film and I’m glad because this movie is for everyone. Cinema is back!
I think you may be right. Sisu pulled me back into a theatre after not thinking I would ever watch another movie on a screen bigger than the one in my living room.
So glad to see so many liking this film. We Finns have our small marks in Hollywood, we do have maybe the biggest flop of all time in Cutthroat Island but the same director, who directed Cutthroat Island, has also directed Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger among others. Maybe this will leave a bigger mark in theri. Also the last line spoken in the film is a gem xD Kinda summarizes who we Finns are, or at least who we think we are :)
Greetings from Finland! Been fan of your channel for over a decade now. I'm really pleasently surprised that this movie is getting so much positive attention outside of Finland or outside of Europe altogether for that matter. We've had movies like "Rare Exports" "The Big Game (with Samuel L. Jackson, also by Helander" and "Iron Sky" that have been out of the ordinary from otherwise boring thriller/drama/comedy type of movie offerings that are typically made in Finland. Certainly having far more commercial potential. Movies like these and "Sisu", getting made in Finland is almost like finding an unicorn in the wild. I'm so happy that it's getting noticed as we have a serious lack of good action movies in our pathetic little film industry! ...with that said, i still need to watch this as it's still played here in theaters. I would've done so sooner, but ticket prices are ripping us off big time (17€ ffs...).
Yes Chris! Because of John Wick, action in films have improved significantly! Glad to see Finnish film getting much attention! Highly looking forward to Extraction 2!
I don’t think John Wick was the beginning of this wave of action movies. I’d say Taken may have been the starting point for one man army type movies to make a come back.
@@joshhunt4146you mean "the raid"? Because Taken was inspired by the Bourne movies given its shaky camera and John wick was inspired by the raid movies
Did exactly what you said and went in blind (although I had seen the trailer for it and forgot about it). It's a good time with creative kills. I love that I didn't know a single actor in the movie cause they were all awesome! ETA: The tender moment with the horse had me tearing up, ngl.
Fun fact: the young tank driver is played by the protagonist's real life son. He was in a movie called big game where he saves Samuel l Jackson, also a Finnish movie
I saw this on Saturday after watching The Black Demon, and man, did Sisu ever perk up that double feature! I hadn't seen anything up until seeing the trailer prior to John Wick 4, and got many people hyped to see it. So much "show, don't tell" to give you his backstory without having to explicitly define it, outside of "The Legend" part. Such a fun movie.
Chris, just a note to say that I always enjoy your reviews. I haven't been to a theater in years. but if a film is good enough and at a fair price, I'll purchase it at home.
This is kind of how us Finnish people metaphorically see our lives: Push through all the shit that life throws at us, if we fall down (mentally or physically) our free healthcare picks us back up and off we go again!
And I had never even heard of it or seen a trailer. At first I was like “there is no way I’m sitting here for two hours watching this”, thinking it was going to be all about this dude looking for gold with his dog and his horse. 😅
While too late to see it in such a setting as this guy did, one tip remains: GO IN COLD, don’t even watch the trailer! I know this review gave away a lot, but get your significant other to watch it cold. This is BY FAR the single best film of all time in the Revenge genre!!
We saw the movie yesterday and it was very entertaining. Quite brutal at times but the movie just worked, I definitely recommend it unless you dislike violence then maybe it's not the best pick 😅
I saw this film yesterday. I knew about it because they showed the trailer when I saw John Wick. It's incredible movie. I'm not saying it the best made movie, but it might be my new favorite movie I've seen this year.
My wife and I saw this movie last night. There were only eight other people in the theater and I walked out wanting to tell everybody about the next John wick
This is a great movie! Anybody who a fan of the John wick style should enjoy this movie. Only setback is I did sort of expect more kills. Felt most of the main really creative kills were the ones we already saw in the trailer.
So this isn’t a horror movie based on Raya and the Last Dragon? I can already see how THAT would turn out: Sisu (after being resurrected): “Raya… I am SO Hungry…” *ungodly scream of horror* *title drop*
I full heartedly agree with you man, really great action flick. One of the most fun and enjoyable I've seen in a while. The lack of dialog and the mystery of the man really complements this film and its concept... Man, I gotta say watching your videos and hearing your thoughts on films has really enhanced the love I already have of film. I also have been given a whole new appreciation for my interest in films. Before I thought I was just a casual movie goer, but I in fact have an immense love and enjoyment for films and everything they offer.
Bro you’ve got me so sold on this movie I’ll admit when you said the 80s had a baby with RRR I had to stop the review because I need to just go see this for myself and then I’m gonna come back and watch the review all the best brother
Before seeing "Sisu", all I knew about it was that a lot of Nazis are killed. Which was enough for me. The fantastical part of the story just made it more fun. This is a classic in my book.
Watched it a few days ago.....that old dude is frickkin badass!!!!......Unbelievably tough asf....He makes Rambo looks like childsplay & feels like a John Wick stuck in a WW2 era....For anyone who loves a good action flick, this is a must see!
I watched it after reading a reddit thread and ran here to see what you thought and we have the exact same energy. I freaking loved it. I got goosebumps when the armed woman walked through the fog. That was so badass.
I tend to be quite sceptical of films produced in my country so I just shrugged this one off, but if Chris tells me to go see it, then I guess I’ll have to go see it :D. Greetings from Finland
The thing is Jalmari Helander is a really big exception in Finnish movie makers. When he does something it's instantly interesting to me. Otherwise Finnish movies are just a big bunch of nothing burgers with the very occasional good one, like Tuntematon Sotilas.
@@FINNSTIGAT0R I have to be honest, I don’t really like this guy’s movies. I remember feeling embarrassed that Samuel L. Jackson had to be part of Big Game, and I was a kid with very little critical thinking when I saw it lol. I’m not a big fan of Tuntematon Sotilas either (don’t really care about war movies in general). The recent film Compartment No. 6 was great and I enjoy bunch of Aki Kaurismäki’s films, but I guess those are a bit more acquired taste. My problem usually is that most finnish films are weird melodramas or bad comedies and I just couldn’t care less about them :D
@@lukapitkanen3333 Samuel L. jackson has been in so many different kinds of movies from brilliant to extreme crap, that in no way Big Game was a low point for him. I like Jalmari's productions first and foremost because he brings something else to the Finnish movie scene, and for better or for worse, has his own kinda style and subject matters. That all may be mainly heavily emulated action movies from the 80's to 90's, but that's his thing and he seems to stick with it. I like to watch these kinds of movies mainly because they remind me of my childhood, as I was a late 80's and 90's kid/teen. And when these movies are unapologetically made, and with genuine, sincere enthusiasm I don't really care how stupid they get. Like Iron Sky for example, I can't stand that movie, because none of it is sincere and it shows. It's like nobody was actually intetested about the whole movie, and they wrote it as a joke, like I don't mean as a funny and original movie, but as a joke - Nazis on the moon, hilarious, now let's write Sarah Palin in this n shit 🤷🏻♂️
Yup, a little gem of a good movie this year. That horse scene 🤐 i didn't want the movie to finish and to see more carnage. The cinematography and the sound was great. 4/5
I always wanted to see this film, thanks for the recommendation. I don’t usually go to the theater, I’ll just purchase the movie. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I’m much more comfortable watching it at home.
Very nice movie. Slightly rough around the edges but fun time for sure. A bit needed to swallow on the believability side of things but otherwise it's pretty clever and fun with it's environments that mostly lack cover of any kind. Also nazis communicating in English was a bit distracting at first but given the budget and size of Finnish movie industry I can't hold that too much against the film. Ultimately happy how it turned out and how widely it's been recognized. As a Fin I'm happy every time some of us try something interesting or "hollywoody" instead of comedies or dramas that rule the industry here. Sisu is one of the better and most fun outliers out there.
I so love this movie very much that after watching it I replayed it again. His killing skill is different. The lead actor believe it or not just spoke once in the entire film but still this one is a great one movie that you just cannot miss.
Funny thing, my co worker just mentioned this movie today. Then you video pops up. Sold! Not to mention you brought up RAID! One of my favorites. Subbed.
As a Finn I'm happy to see people like Sisu. Some comments. "Sisu" means litterally guts, the intestines. If you have "sisu", you won't puke nor sh1t your pants in a dangerous situation. You keep precious food inside you. As to pronunciation, the first vowel is short, like in "kiss". I'd like to have seen the Germans speak German, especially because they don't speak so much. As to military history, we Finns don't think of Wehrmacht as die-hard Nazis. The real Nazi baddies would have been the Skull'n'Bones -wearing SS Corps, which these poor sods definitely aren't.
So great that you're promoting this! Saw it opening weekend here in Finland and knew it was gonna be at least somewhat of a hit, but $1.4 million in opening weekend in the States?! That never happens to Finnish cinema.
"He's not immortal, he just refuses to die."

Just saw this on Friday night. Was such a badass movie. My only complaint is it was too short. If it was 2 hours long, I think it'd be even better. Such a great film, just wish it was a little bit longer. I'd definitely watch it again. Saw it with my best friend and another friend of mine.
No more super long movies. It was perfect.
@@blackirish6868 I agree for the most part, but this movie is one I think would definitely benefit from that treatment.
I did see the trailer for this and loved how much of the violence it displayed. I will definitely be seeing this.
Hey, it's you! One of your Finnish subscribers here :D
The movie's great and it's definitely a gory one!
I saw the movie and I still watch the trailer. So awesome.
Chris: “Please don’t say I’m comparing them.”
Also Chris: “The Raid is a better movie.” 😂
we'll let that slide :D
The Raid and The Raid Berandal are better than any action movies ever made. They're in fact the two best action movies ever made, better than Predator, better than T2, better than Die Hards or Lethal Weapons....and I love those movies. Imo nothing comes close to the Raids. It's just a shame that it was overshadowed by the subpar and barely watchable JW.
@@mushmushi1 your opinion is trash.
Loved it, was great. It was playing at my local AMC in the Dolby Theater. One of the better experiences in the theater I've had in a long time. The minefield scene was insane and pure cinema goodness.
Everything you said!
Thank you for appreciating the little movies and spreading the word out for others to see "our" little gem.
Holy shit, I was hoping for this one but wasn't really expecting it! Greetings from Finland, expect a few of us here 😅
Sisu is a common word in here, and there really isn't a direct translation of it.
The way you're describing this film makes it sound like Brotherhood of the Wolf.
That's a good thing.
I’m glad this movie is getting praise. We need more films like this!
We need more concepts like this, but NOT this type of “leave him hes dead when we know hes not dead and we can just shoot him now” crap. That was so unbelievable it was ridiculous.
@@gagelindell271 man bro I was laughing 90% of it cause of how dumb it was
@@calebe5848 I was hyped for the movie and I just kinda felt numb and bored. Glad im not alone.
I am happy that Superheroes movies are slowly slipping away, not that it's gone completely, but good to know other piece of action blockbusters are killing it this year. Thanks to John Wick 4 and this movie.
This movie looks so fascinating, can’t wait to see this!
One time watch with very poor climax with no logic
@@ronaknanda6175 I think varied opinions keeps things interesting, thanks for your thoughts!
I’m curious to see which side I take once I do see it. You say it was a one time watch, was there anything you enjoyed about it during that one time?
@@solaris263 i like the color grading n making of this film , it's very very simple revenge film .
@@ronaknanda6175 I see, at least there was some stuff you liked- not a complete waste then! Out of sheer curiosity can I ask you to recommend me some of your favourite movies? I’m always on the hunt for new stuff!
@@ronaknanda6175 I’ve only seen burning from your list, really awesome movie! Thank you for all these, I’ll surely check them out!! Have a good one~
You randomly punching a stranger in the arm because you were laughing uncontrollably is a hilarious image to me 😂
Interesting what you said about a lot of people being there.
This movie was great. I wished it was market better. It deserves to be seen in theaters and make more money than it’s doing.
Great review Chris.
Saw this yesterday when the theater near us didn't have evil dead aaaand frickin loved it.
Sisu is a combination of grit, perseverance, determination, indomitable spirit and sometimes even stupid stubbornness.
Helander is knocking on the door of America's monopoly on action movies.
All I can say it that this movie just kicks ass and is fun. Great to see movies like this coming from other parts of the world. Hope they do more.
Yes Chris! Because of John Wick, action in films have improved significantly!
Glad to see Finnish film getting much attention!
Highly looking forward to Extraction 2!
Wick was just the newest wave of action movies that brought the genre back to bigger box office numbers.
@@vgjunkie8386 is the raid a ‘one man army’ film? Iv never seen it…
Did exactly what you said and went in blind (although I had seen the trailer for it and forgot about it).
We saw it last night and loved it! The women in the film need a sequel!
Looks like I'm the only one who watched Once Upon a Time in America. It is a great, mighty, wonderful masterpiece
Yes it is.
I'm so happy that you Chris did like sisu ! as Finnish guy this warms my heart
I just went to go see it last night, such a great movie. I was hoping you would do a review on it Chris, so im happy you did
Chris, just a note to say that I always enjoy your reviews.
I saw Sisu as Regal’s mystery movie and loved it! Wouldn’t mind watching it again. :)
And I had never even heard of it or seen a trailer. At first I was like “there is no way I’m sitting here for two hours watching this”, thinking it was going to be all about this dude looking for gold with his dog and his horse. 😅
This movie gets the job done. Pure and simple.
While too late to see it in such a setting as this guy did, one tip remains: GO IN COLD, don’t even watch the trailer!
I know this review gave away a lot, but get your significant other to watch it cold. This is BY FAR the single best film of all time in the Revenge genre!!
Saw this in Dolby, really dope visceral film that takes its time so it feels very refreshing to see amidst all these fast paced action films.
We saw the movie yesterday and it was very entertaining. Quite brutal at times but the movie just worked, I definitely recommend it unless you dislike violence then maybe it's not the best pick 😅
Saw this last night. it was awesome and brilliant. only complaint is I wish there was more
I watched your video yesterday and immediately bought a ticket for today and it was as great as you said. I had such a blast in the theater!
Saw this one Thursday night in a packed theater and it is great! Definitely gave me Sergio Leone vibes.
Bro that shirt is immaculate. Also I didn't think I could respect you more as a person, then you go wearing SH merch.
A miner punching Nazis? Great, count me in.
I can already see how THAT would turn out:
Sisu (after being resurrected): “Raya… I am SO Hungry…”
*ungodly scream of horror*
*title drop*
😂
Oh, boy, I was hoping you'd see this one! Saw in in theatres last week here in Norway. I guess i should have expected as much. ❤
Yes I was hoping for this! I love this movie! Fantastic acting and cinematography!
Greetings, this is Miika from Finland. Thank you Chris for this wonderful review
I would definitely watch a sequel or prequel for this movie
I want to see a prequel… the story of what made him a legend
I full heartedly agree with you man, really great action flick. One of the most fun and enjoyable I've seen in a while. The lack of dialog and the mystery of the man really complements this film and its concept... Man, I gotta say watching your videos and hearing your thoughts on films has really enhanced the love I already have of film. I also have been given a whole new appreciation for my interest in films. Before I thought I was just a casual movie goer, but I in fact have an immense love and enjoyment for films and everything they offer.
Tiedätte mitä tämä tarkoittaa? TORILLE!
Bro you’ve got me so sold on this movie I’ll admit when you said the 80s had a baby with RRR I had to stop the review because I need to just go see this for myself and then I’m gonna come back and watch the review all the best brother
Sisu make Rambo look like Mary Poppins 😂😂
Before seeing "Sisu", all I knew about it was that a lot of Nazis are killed. Which was enough for me. The fantastical part of the story just made it more fun. This is a classic in my book.
Watched it a few days ago.....that old dude is frickkin badass!!!!......Unbelievably tough asf....He makes Rambo looks like childsplay & feels like a John Wick stuck in a WW2 era....For anyone who loves a good action flick, this is a must see!
One of 2023's best surprises in cinema.
Chris mainitsi suomen, torille!
I watched it after reading a reddit thread and ran here to see what you thought and we have the exact same energy. I freaking loved it. I got goosebumps when the armed woman walked through the fog. That was so badass.
Just saw it with my dad yesterday. Loved it. I was quite "blown away"
When I saw the trailer before John Wick 4 I was immediately excited to see this!
@@lukapitkanen3333
Samuel L. jackson has been in so many different kinds of movies from brilliant to extreme crap, that in no way Big Game was a low point for him.
@@FINNSTIGAT0R well I’m glad his movies have found an audience. I can definitely appreciate someone who is passionated about what they do.
Yup, a little gem of a good movie this year. That horse scene 🤐 i didn't want the movie to finish and to see more carnage. The cinematography and the sound was great. 4/5
I loved the part in Sisu where the Sisu said, “It’s Sisuing time!” and Sisu’d all over the Nazis and left his Sisu all over the place.
I always wanted to see this film, thanks for the recommendation. I don’t usually go to the theater, I’ll just purchase the movie. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I’m much more comfortable watching it at home.
Been waitting for this one for a bit. LOVED Rare Exports, will watch anything the director makes.
Sisu is something Finnish people have 😊
Nice review, and greetings from Finland.
I saw it a couple hours ago and it was so badass.
Way better than Rambo, more bloody, more emotional and so much action.
The finnish Rambo.
Sisu is an amazing movie. Loved every second of it.
I got to see an exclusive screening of this at Alamo Drafthouse, it was awesome!
Quite excited to see this movie asap 😃 cool review. The joy is visible Chris ❤
I so love this movie very much that after watching it I replayed it again. His killing skill is different.
The lead actor believe it or not just spoke once in the entire film but still this one is a great one movie that you just cannot miss.
Saw it today and it was fantastic. More people need to go see this film!
First John Wick 4 and now Sisu. So happy the the actions movies are back in form again!!
This was a great movie. The fact that he doesn't utter a word until the very end shows the actors prowess. A very fun movie.
I'm always sceptical about finnish movies so when someone makes review of them it means something (usually good)
I watched this last night and loved it so much I immediately started it over and watched it again! So good!
I heard about this film a day before seeing it. I loved it. I had to post my own video review of it. It's impossible to not recommend.
Love that Silent Hill / Suffocation mashup print, so sick
