2019 Yamaha YZF-R6 Review | MC Commute

- Опубліковано 11 лис 2019
- When it comes to raw handling prowess, and going fast around paved bends, few motorcycles perform better than Yamaha’s razor-sharp YZF-R6. For 20 years, the Tuning Fork brand has been stamping its middleweight 600cc supersport for riders who want to experience the thrill of sport riding.
--
Last updated for the 2017 model year, the more slippery YZF-R6 is powered by a high-revving inline-four engine that loves to scream-to the tune of nearly 16,000 rpm. Although the powertrain is 11 years old, the R6's I4 remains modern in terms of feel and performance courtesy its variable intake system (YCC-I) and adjustable D-Mode throttle mapping. It also benefits from Yamaha's 2012-gen YZF-R1 traction control system, a big plus for those who ride on the street, especially in inclement weather.
However its svelte, 420-pound curb weight and ability to eat up corners is where the R6 shines. More modern 2015-generation YZF-R1 suspension and more sturdy brake hardware make it a hoot to barrel into corners on. Factor in the MotoGP-derived body panels and full LED lighting, and it’s a motorcycle that looks as tasty as it performs.
Yes, its racy, yes, it’s not as forgiving nor as cozy to ride on the street as an MT-09, but if you desire a thrilling sportbike with a passable level of everyday street capability, you won’t be disappointed with the YZF-R6.

R6: 120HP
Motorcyclist Mag: Not alot of power
Me: Thats more than my 3000lb car makes...
Try 125cc bikes in Europe. Like the Suzuki GSX-R125 I've had.
11kW. 15PS. xD But hey, it's light and agile.
Not always about setting laptimes or top speeds.
My unit of measurement of choice is: smiles. How much fun it is to flick around corners and have a blast with.
Shiznuts for sheer riding pleasure, yes, but when it comes to long distance touring well, there no substitute for cubic inches. And in the USA you will find that often, everything is far away......
yes, 15PS definitely is too little.
But honestly, you don't need 215HP unless you want to blast around tracks.
A 600cc to me seems the sweet spot. Ditched the 125.
Thinking hard about a Triumph 765... CBR650R & Aprilia RS660...
Saucy secretz I know right, 7hp bike and 78hp car owner here.. lol, help
That's what happens when they ride the "small bike" like pussies hahaha when a 600 is ridden like its meant to, the 1000s seem unnecessary
Guy : ya the r6 is kinda slow lets just run it in mode A
Bike : pops a wheelie
Guy : wwooaaaahhhhhheeeyyyyaaa shes got the beans
LMAO DEAD WWOOOJAJA SHHEEES GOT THR BEANS WOAH
I was looking for this comment after watching that
Ya he's an idiot
The way you talk about 600’s and 100+ hp being “nothing to write home about” is part of the reason all of these younger inexperienced riders are throwing their legs over literbikes right after passing their BRC. I will never understand why people say these things about middleweight sportbikes. A 400 pound machine that produces over 100 hp at the wheel and will run 11’s on the strip fresh off the show room floor and they’re still considered slow or “nothing to write home about”. Do as you please but I just don’t understand.
capitalism
I feel you. In my country, I've trying to tell my friends that don't rush, get a 300cc-ish, those bikes will teach you a lot. But they didn't listen, they want the 1000cc bikes
Agreed, worked my way up to 1000cc super sports after many years of riding. Starting on a SV650s, ZX6r and then a CBR 1000rr. I've had other bikes since. Most people on 1000cc super sports shouldn't be on them. They just want to twist the throttle and hold on. Which is fine, they can do whatever they want, its their life. But they probably won't develop the skill to do anything other then highway pulls and are often out riding their own ability. I saw a 06 CBR 1000rr for sale in my area about a month ago. It was snatched up pretty quickly and two weeks later I saw it listed for sale again but it had be wrecked by whoever thought it was a good idea for them to buy it. I was in the market for a track bike and was pretty bummed out when i saw that.
Yeap!
600’s are quick but take the fact they are 400 and whatever lbs plus the riders weight and if your 6’1 230 lbs now your bike is about 650-700 lbs and the bike is still fast as hell unless your super morbidly obese but when you can get a liter bike for a couple grand more the quality and the amount of bells and whistles you get is actually a better deal for your money. Like for $11,500 you can get a 2018 zx10r krt edition with abs and comes with Quickshifters up and down, traction control, launch control, 3 power modes so you start off with it in low power with traction control to the highest setting and that’s making less power than a 600 so once your comfortable with your bike you can start taken your electronic aids off or lowered. That’s why a liter bike is worth getting but at the same time you can get a left over 2019 zx6r with abs brand new for $8999. That’s a steal. But 12 grand for an old r6 isn’t worth the money at all. I could have a newer faster liter bike for that price
Is it just me or does the r6 and r1 look so incredibly insanely good
they do bro
this dude talks about 100hp bikes like they're 125s
On youtube, every bike is "little" unless its a 1000+

@@Ferbocarbo How many times are you going to copy and paste your not funny comment?
I feel like he has so much experience on a motorcycle that he doesn't realize how much people don't know.
In South East Asia, 300 to 600cc bikes are dreams of so many people - not to mention liter bikes, because they are VERY expensive, tax and registration fee are expensive, gas is also expensive, streets are always packed with people in combination with tiny roads and terrible traffic. Most of us get around town using 100 - 150cc bikes everyday. And here I am watching my European and American friends telling me this 600cc 100+ HP bike "doesn't feel too small" and "still a very zippy bike"... it just feels weird to me. LOL
Yeah mate, I live some thousands of miles away but I share a very similar environment and the same feelings. Here stuff like the Ninja 400 is something not many people can afford, yet a 600cc bike that puts 100hp to the tire is "not too powerful", feels bad man.
Same here.lol
We just live in the moped culture my friend... Underbone are the more famous platform
Same in South America.
population troubles mate
I like how his hair looks like he's already been going 200 before he even got on the bike!!
😂 true that
This comment just made my morning. Thank you. Has me cracking up

ANCIENT ALIENS
Guy: Says it doesn’t have a lot of power
R6: pulls power wheelie
Guy: it’s got the beans
Since when is 100+ hp lacking power? Faster than 99.9% of cars on the road.
Anything above 80 hp is powerful
100+ hp at the wheel mind you. I bet that thing makes close to 120 at the crank
No kidding. This bike would smoke about any normal car on the road
According to modern sportbike riders if a bike has less than 200 horsepower it’s underpowered.
@@AzeveidoMateus lol, I bet 99% of liter bike owners haven't taken a 600 anywhere near its limits, ever but they buy a 1000cc cause it's cool and they can go fast in a straight line.
"because its a 600 and dosen't make a whole lot of power" lol that thing makes more power than my 1085 sohc twin
That's what happens when they ride the "small bike" like pussies hahaha when a 600 is ridden like its meant to, the 1000s seem unnecessary
@@Ferbocarbo I agree with your opinion, 600cc is enough for me. why used 1000cc sports bike if you cannot even used its full power on street. right?
@@kradzride3680 Tbh I don't think most people can use the horses of most 1000s anywhere. Even on a track most probably won't get more out of a lap than a 600 rider. Maybe on the straights... 🤷
@@Ferbocarbo and when you ride a 1000s like its ment to it makes the 600 feel like its running a 2 cylinders... dont hate on the big bikes just cuz you cant ride them
@@WhiteGravey I agree. But to talk down on a 600 you need to be riding them like they are meant to to be justified. And I've had a 200 supermoto, 100 two stroke, 250 enduro, cross 2 stroke 125, 600 inline four, 2 cylinder 700, 3 cylinder 900, and a V 1290 super duke from the depths of hell that puts inline 1000s to shame, so you may kiss my ass my man. ;) And those are not including the ones I've ridden without owning.
Supersport 600s are so out of fashion despite being some of the most fun on two wheels. Probably reflects the aging rider population. Good on Yamaha for still selling this R6.
Pc nut jobs still believe wamen will save the economy if you pander to their needs.
Whether it's guitars or bikes or sports cars
Can you elaborate on what u mean? I didn’t know 600s we’re out of fashion
@@cmfan6870 600s in general might be selling. But sales of supersports like this R6 are nowadays very small - so there's really just Yamaha and Kawasaki selling them (even the new Daytona is a ltd edition). And bikes like the cbr650r though faired are fairly soft so don't count. The rs660 might squeeze in tho reported power if fairly low. 20 years ago these things sold well.
they're more expensive and not very usable day to day than a naked or a sports standard. Honestly these days those bikes are plenty sporty fun as it is. What's the point of a supersports.. If I want one of those then why don't I just buy a superbike? 🤔
@@cmfan6870 the sales numbers have dropped drastically over the past few years in this class of super sports. Hell, Honda isn't even gonna sell their 600 any more in the UK. And is rumored to stop sales in the US if the sales keep falling. I've heard it's because most people looking for a bike over 10k are willing to spend the extra few grand for a 1000. With all the extra tech and what-not. But that's just a rumor.
"How do you like the sound"...*revs a bike with 16k+ redline to only 4k*
Hahahahaha
To be fair he literally just started it up sooo
@@gpgstudios9813 He's known for weeks that he was doing the review and part of every review is "how do you guys like the sound." In short, the bike should have been warmed up and ready.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
You shouldn't rev the engine up to redline without it being under load anyway.
I think you're trying too hard to be cool downplaying how fast a bike that puts 100hp to the rear tire really is.
Word. Power to weight ratio makes a huge difference. My 2005 R6 makes about 105hp which is the same as my little daily driver. My daily driver is slow af meanwhile my R6 moves when I want it to.
That seems to be a common issue with many bike journalists.
Agreed. I went from. 1200CC BMW to a CBR600F 2006 and it's very quick but in a different way. Not the instant torque of a big cc bike but once you get the revs up it really does take off. This guy is acting like he's riding a 300 single.
ArthurAlcantara sounds like he is trying to sell it to senior citizens
100p...just look at 6:07
I was keen when I saw they redesigned it in 2017. I watched your review of it back then and I was sold. Bought the first one in NZ and have never regretted it. Still love it.
I own this bike. 2018 Yamaha R6. I've ridden around 14,000 KMs. Yet I am so entertained watching this video. I can just step outside and go for a ride but watching this is giving me the thrills.
"This is a zippy little motorcycle from Yamaha". Those among us with some early experience on lighter bikes like 50cc two strokes know how ridiculous that statement is. These are serious race bikes that can keep up with 1000's in the right hands.
@@geroldwaltor2154 That's an example already. However I think that the reporter in this video is a skilled rider. Maybe he has just been on too many different bikes and undervalues the 600s. I mean, this guy has probably ridden the most extreme sportbikes out there.
Okay lemme just say 600s can just barely keep up with 1000s.
lol I almost turned your video off when you said this bike doesn’t put out a whole lot of power.
Because you don't know any better. Adam Waheed has ridden every single motorcycle made in the last 20 years, I'd take his word for it.
It doesn’t lol 115hp tops and the torque is garbage.. it’s zippy but not the most powerful thing out

At 06.11 she was tired of been called part of the "these small 600 cc bikes that doesn't have much power!"lol..and freaking almost ripped his arms off and wheelie like a wild horse hahahhaha
Alex Parada the dude is a moron
I've never rode a motorcycle. I've been researching for hours and hours. At first, the 600cc class seemed to scary, but if I'm being honest with myself, the yamaha R6 is the only bike that speaks to my soul.
Stop calling 600's small, tiny, little, man🤦. There's rest of the world other than USA with straight roads. You making it look like it's a 250.
Bruh Im short as fuck I want to ride a 600cc but I know my midget ass wont be able to touch the floor 😂
antisocial don’t let size deter you, anyone can ride a bike, no reason to have both feet touch the ground anyways (left foot on ground and right on peg close to rear brake in case its needed at a stop is ideal) in any case if you think thats tall, I’ve seen shorter riders use various techniques on dirt bikes with very high ground clearance. Its just getting used to a bikes dimensions.
@@IHiggs I am 6ft tall and I find my gsx-r 600 rather cramped. I think being shorter might be an advantages as far as comfort goes.
@Andrew Humphrey Well the sportbike helps haha
@Andrew Humphrey can you flatfoot on R6?
I own a 2019 Yamaha R15, which is a 150cc motorcycle and makes around 19hp. It always brings a smile on my face. I ♥️ motorcycling. I guess we all do. 🤘
I really like how this man respects intersections... Really patient when to squeeze the power on that throtle...
R6 always been my bike since 99, hope to get a new one 2020 soon
“I wouldn’t say this is a terrible beginner bike...” 😈 All I needed to hear from my favourite motorcycle reviewer!
The previous model r6 to this actually made about 133bhp. Around 20hp more(supposedly) as an engineer im currently working on a complete facelift kit for the previous model. So that you can have the new looks of the 2017+ model whilst keeping a bit more hp, also a lot cheaper option for just getting the looks of a newer bike without spending 10k+

Never heard of a comfy stock supersport bike
I actually really like the 600cc supersport sector. Ive owned 4 since 2011 a CBR 600RR 2010 and 2011 Zx6r’s and a 2013 Daytona 675R had so much fun with all of them. Adam 🇬🇧
great reviews...thanks for not playing any music!
Man the graphics in this game are amazing!
Gorgeous view looking towards Balboa!
Awesome and informative video, would be cool to see I night ride like you mentioned!!
This guy is talking about an R6 like he’s riding an r3...
Funkdreamer88 bro he rides 1000cc bikes and more often. A lot of the problem with 600s they have to be run up to high rpm so they feel asleep at the wheel till 10 grand or so. My FZ09 feels like a fucking rocket compared to a GSXR600. Part of that is gearing aswell though. End point a 600 needs high revs to feel fun especially compared to big displacement rockets.
I absolutely love my 2020 R3, going to get the TST Power Pack, and use it for commuting/mountain rides. I’m a new rider, and I’m certainly glad I didn’t start on an R6. Some day I’ll have a BMW S1000RR and I’m sure I’ll still enjoy the R3.
LastRaven I went with the yamaha blue, I swapped the gray bits with blue, and black. Also have a Carbon fiber chain guard, Yoshimura R77 slip-on, TST Industries parts. It’s a dope commuter.
@@chrisp.5272 I've had about 5 different bikes and I just recently sold my last 1000 and bought a R3. Such a fun bike and she def has the balls. I live in the city and it's hard to enjoy a 600 or a 1000. It's like having a scooter...... you can't even get out of 2nd gear. My R3 is great

Legendary bike
Little rough around here on Mr. Waheed. Remember, Adam loves this bike. Have you seen his 2018 R6 First Ride Track Review? Basically he was the reason I went back to a 600 from a fire blade. So much more fun on the track and better feeling. Not to mention speed sensation on the streets. How fast do you want to go? In this review he even says it goes and pulled a wheelie. Thanks for the review Adam!
This bike in the hands of a young new rider on the street is a terrible idea. The temptation to outride one's skill level is just too great and the cost of failure too high.
@Andrew Humphrey Good choice for a first bike! As you likely know by now the hardest part of learning to ride isn't shifting, braking, or turning. It's learning how not to let cars kill you. Most first time riders don't understand that. The R6 makes it so easy to go fast and end up in a situation you weren't expecting and can't escape.
If you later feel the urge to get something like an R6, and even if you don't, I would encourage you to go to an on-track riding school. Not only is it a lot of fun but you learn to handle your bike up to near its limit. That limit is probably a lot further than you think.
I am jealous of you. Riding since the '70s, I still remember the first time I got on a "real" motorcycle. Those first years were magic, and well, it still is. Enjoy.
Yes,its nuts, i wouldnt like to start on such a powerful bike
My first bike was a R6 lol I think it was perfect & as time went on I felt the same way he did it’s just to slow at low rpm compared to R1 you have to keep the rpm’s high to ride this bike on track at it’s full potential
@@Unique_Racing Power can't make up for basic skills. It is important for new riders to master fundamental skills before adding power whether on the street or the track. Too many riders, especially in the US where there are no license levels, start with too much power and effectively no training. Being able to extract maximum performance from any vehicle requires training and endless hours of practice.
Bill Kerr yea that’s because the price difference 😂 but I agree most people see a R6 for 12-13k than see an r1 for a couple grand more, that’s the issue honestly they need to make the 600cc cheaper compared to the 1000cc bikes to make it more appealing, but I took motorcycle courses and did everything the right way and everyone should also honestly

Everyone here wants a 1000cc, no less, but they cant even take these things into a proper corner (perfect example, 650ib "smackdowns"). I have yet to find myself in a situation on the streets where i thought, damn this r6 just isn't enough for me. But when i find myself on a 1000cc, the only thing i can think of is how badly it needs to be on a track.
@Joshua De Nunzio eczema? :P Yeah, EICMA. They had that concept last year, that's now making production.
Now the concept one is for the Tuono version... which dare I say... looks pretty badass.
Not a too big fan of the naked category, but that Tuono 660, the new Ducati V4 Streetfighter and Triumph Street Triple RS are really appealing.
Electrics are really up and coming... but it would be such a shame to miss the awesome symphonies combustion engines and their exhausts produce.

Im from the Philippines. I moved to America when I was 5, but I knew a lot about bikes back then too. Ours were like 150cc or less. And when I heard about 1000cc I was surprised. Im a proud owner of a Daytona 675R and when I show relatives in the Philippines they’re so surprised by it and I’m just bleh about it because I’m already so used to it. The first 2 weeks were crazy, but I learned throttle control pretty early. Hoping to get a liter bike in the next 5 years tho

Anyway, I thought my FZR was thrilling and so, I dont think I'll have any problem with the 2019 R6. I'm watching CBR600 reviews too and I will buy one of these bikes in the next couple months. Have you been on a CBR600RR? Which way would you go? Any big differences?

Crazy hearing someone call my dream bike a small displacement bike. Bloody Americans thinking any bike shy of 1000cc is a small bike. Come have a ride on my r3 for a year and you’ll be stoked to get to ride an r6!!!
I wonder if Yamaha at some point will make the R6 with a crossplane layout like the R1 it would sell like hot cakes
The reason the r6 doesn't really need traction control; Much lower and more manageable torque of the R6 when you first crack open throttle while leaned over vs the R1 with twice the tire-spinning part-throttle torque. The same effect applied to the Formula 2 GP 250cc road racers - they could corner even faster than the F1 500s because with less weight and initial torque, they could carry more speed and then pick up the throttle earlier.
I know this is a 2019 model but do you think it's fairings will somehow fit to r6 2009-2013? Considering some adjustments
Adam Waheed-Ever since your days at motorcycle USA I highly value your opinion. I’ve been looking at the R6 after selling my 2013 FZ1 2 yrs ago. Think it’s possible to make the r6 a little more suited for longer hauls with handle bar risers and a softer seat?
What you think about the r6 2020? Which color do you like the most and why? Hopefully you will make video on that.
Ok I’m glad I’m on the same page with everyone. I own a 2020 R6 and i easily pass liter bikes in the twisties and even keep up on the straights
Didn’t know a bike capable of doing 140+ was “little” and “nothing to write home about”

Pro tip: don’t film facing the sun when you were talking about how the bike looked at the beginning?
C’mon guys, I think its very clear that he did not mean that the bike is slow or under powered when he said that its only a 600cc. It’s almost obvious that he meant that the bike is easy to control than other bikes with higher displacement.
4:22 still feels new n sharp! I felt that 4:33
I think it's hilarious that you could, even in a reserved way, recommend a bike with that much power, and potential for total mayhem, as suitable for inexperienced riders. It's not a 'fizzy' willing little puppy dawg. It has the full potential to kill someone, very easily, that doesn't have developed rider skills. Legislation in the UK has gone too far; it discourages people from taking up biking. If you carry on in the way you are, the US will catch up very quickly and reduce the accessibility of bikes and the number of bikes on the road very quickly. Get responsible.
Clive O'Mahoney totally agree. I commented on this thread too that all of this ego trip from sportbike riders calling middleweights “too slow” or “underpowered” is peer pressuring new riders into getting literbikes or hypernaked torque monsters as their first ride. I don’t understand how a bike that can accelerate to sixty in the 3 second range can possibly be not enough power. According to all these guys if a sportbike has less than 200 horsepower it’s underpowered.
Riding is way less popular here and the majority are cruiser riders that lobby against helmet laws.
@@cognition26 yeah I still don’t understand that. Why do they want to increase their chances of not being able to see their loved ones ever again in the case of an accident?
good vid ride safe every1
Besides the taller windscreen, nicer dash, LED headlights and traction control compared to the CBR600RR, is the R6 overall a better machine?
Can you do an MC commute on the new zx6r and compare it with the R6?
Wish Kawa would go back to the drawing board and re-think their design language.
As a kid I really wanted to have a green Ninja when I grew up.
Unfortunately these days... I really wouldn't want to be seen near one. They're so fugly.
R6 cannot compare to the zx6r.

i'm middle aged and returning to biking , this seems the right choice to rebuild my skills , frankly a 200hp liter bike would be too much 4 me.
