The ultimate band. The band that other musicians can appreciate due to their originality, jazz influence and perfection on every song. They chose the best studio musicians and merged the best tracks to their liking. You can listen to their music and still not be tired of it decades later. One hundred years from now they will still be playing Steely Dan. Can’t say the same for today’s music.

I saw a live band, the other day, and they played "Do It Again". They didn't have a keyboard. I had been playing it on the keyboard, earlier that day. It's fun, memorable, and easy, as it has mostly one chord, then walks up and down three chord steps, and then hits another chord, and starts over. When you have one chord, in the rhythm hand, it frees up the focus, for the soloing relationships of the melody hand.

Agreed. I checked to see if how others ranked it as far as its place among best solos. I think it was down in the 50s somewhere. Really thought it should be higher. I like how his guitar "responds" to each lyric in the chorus. When I listen to this, it's like Randall's guitar is trying to sing its own lyrics.

You two definitely need to listen to more Steely Dan. They are legendary.
I have always had a sentimental attachment to Steely Dan for two reasons: First, my very first girlfriend gave me all their CD’s as a present back in 1989. Second, I was fortunate enough to see Steely Dan in concert at the Miami Arena back in 1994. Very unusual concert…Donald Fagen and Walter Becker came out, sat on wooden barstools with regular old fashioned can lights above them. During the applause after each tune, the guy sitting right behind me, was shouting crazy sounds just like Steven Tyler. After a few songs, that got old. So I had planned to turn and say I like his enthusiasm, but could he just applaud like everyone else. I turned around…it was Steven Tyler. Lol.

Lex has the best Metaphors when discussing music. 🍊🤣
One of the best things about Steely Dan is not only are they musically intense and complex in a jazz-informed kinda way, they write songs that sketch out characters. interesting characters living lives you can imagine. There are actually short story collections published which flesh out the people and stories described in their songs.

Great early SD tune! Very popular on the radio back in the day. But every one of their albums was packed with great songs from start to finish. A lot of them got airplay on the radio, but others didn't. Back in the day I could sing along with all of them and remember every word. Very clever wordplay in their songwriting. They used studio musicians for their backup band and they had very catchy, funky melodies in their songs. One of the best from the '70s! You could take a deep dive into Steely Dan and never get tired of them. They were sort of like Cake; they sounded different than anybody else at the time and you always knew it was Steely Dan, but their songs also had some variety to them.

Lex for the win! The natural perfection of freshly squeezed orange juice is exactly the right metaphor for the perfection of soundscapes that Steely Dan were known for. You guys are so much fun!

This is one of their first big hits and probably one of their most "normal" rock tunes. FM, or Kid Charlemagne if you want some more "Steely Dan" Steely Dan.

Love Lex’s groove with this. You have to recognise the pure musicianship and genius of Steely Dan, very deep rabbit hole there and such variation of music. One of the most talented bands of the last 50 years.

So this is the second video I have watched from you two.
I love how she isn't afraid to let the music move her but he seems to analyze the music rather than moving with it so much.
I really enjoy how She enjoys things and isn't afraid to show it.
It's especially fun to watch my favorite music I grew up with affect people for the first time hearing it.
You should have heard how amazing it was back then!
Y'all are fun and I'll be watching more.
God Bless from an old hippie boomer!

LOVE it! Such a CLASSIC Brad & Lex reaction with Lex just instantly riding the groove and becoming music and perfect fresh orange juice while Brad is absorbing and processing every sonic molecule that comes his way and releasing that great smile of his more and more. Y'all never fail to put a smile on my face and some hope and joy in my heart. Thank You! 🥰❤

Lex you crack me up. You’re all bouncing around while Brad is sitting there studiously contemplating the meaning of the lyrics. I adored your orange juice metaphor and totally get it. Some of these old classics just seem more fresh and tastier than the highly processed music of recent years.

They had some of the finest players of the day on their records. Everyone was 100% in control, and that left them all the space they needed to stretch out and be creative with all of the parts. They made lots of really great songs you can just groove to. But the more times you listen, the more new things you can hear. True classics. They brought top 40 to a whole new level.

The guitar solo on the original recorded version, by session player Elliott Randall, was recorded in one take. It has reportedly been rated by Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page as his favorite solo of all time, and he scored it 12/10. In 2016 the solo was ranked the 40th best guitar solo of all time by the readers of Guitar World magazine. - Guitar Wiki

Brad speaks of Donald Fagen's offbeat timbre to his voice and he does have an unusually beautiful voice, it's not a perfect melodic singing voice but that's what is so appealing about it. The Japanese have a philosophy in art called wabasabi which is finding Beauty in the imperfect and I believe perhaps Brad's tuned into that aesthetic

Steely Dan has dozens of songs that are written very well, and performed by the best studio musicians money could buy, at the time. I always thought it was obvious they were New Yorkers…..Not good, not bad, just obvious. Great artists, and a great reaction! My wife and I will be in Florida, soon. Maybe we’ll see y’all!
