I couldn't disagree with this more. I mean for one thing, even if you want to put that much emphasis on lyrics, lyric videos on youtube are notoriously terrible at getting the lyrics right. So they're usually not even worth what they're trying to accomplish. But beyond that, there is so much to get lost in with the music in Steely Dan, that its not even necessary to know what the song's about to appreciate the music. I mean its music - not poetry. Don't get me wrong, I love what SD does lyrically too and its definitely worth taking the time to look into the lyrics. But watching lyric videos on your first listen through with the music is probably the last thing you should do.. It draws your attention to the screen and away from the audio in your ears. I strongly encourage people to just close their eyes and listen to music as it is initially, and then go back and look into the lyrics on subsequent listens.

Steely Dan was named after a woman character's Dildo. William S. Burroughs, "Naked Lunch" novel. It was her nickname for the pleasurable device. No, I am not joking.
This band was in a class unto themselves. With splendid writing, instrumentation, singing and production, each song is ‘sound artistry’ taken to another realm. Gentlemen - welcome to Steely Dan.
Some of those studio musicians that played with Steely Dan were Jeff Porcaro (on drums) and David Paich (keyboards) in the early years before Jeff and David started there own band Toto.
The band of a thousand takes, very much perfectionists who spent an incredible amount of time getting the exact sound they wanted on any given song. Studio musicians who played for them tell of the extraordinary amount of effort required until the sound was just right.

I was driving across the Bay Bridge headed from Reno to SF, January of 72 I think, when this song first came on the radio. I almost drove off the bridge. Thankfully, the station announced the name of the group. Been following them ever since. 13 or 14 times live. They can do no wrong, for me. RIP, Walter.

I never looked back, steadily buying music over the next 15 or so years and developed an incredible record collection of great music from the ‘70s and ‘80s. I bought many more Steely Dan albums after this. The album Aja is their masterpiece. My top pic for you to react to off that record is Black Cow. Absolute fire!
This song takes me back to 1976 in Tallahassee, Florida when I was 7 years old. My mom and I would sing it whenever we heard "Reelin in the years or Do it again" on the radio. Great vibes and loved the funk. Recommendations Peg, Nineteen, Home at last, FM, Deacon Blues, Pretzel Logic, Babylon Sisters and Reelin in the years. Great reaction!
Steely Dan is a duo group formed by members Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. They got the name from a "Sex Toy"!! They would bring in musicians for one solo on one song, because they were perfectionists on the production side. They were considered to be the most polished music producers of all thime, and it shows in the details when you allow yourself to dissect the music and instruments involved. But it drove the record company execs crazy because of the time and money it would take for them to complete one song, not to mention the whole album! I jammed out to these guys all through high school and since then too. One of my favorite groups of all time!
Like myself, Fagen and Becker were from the NYC area and it's probably best to describe this song as having a "Latin" sound. It would be safe to say that there is a bit of Santana's influence in this song remembering that this song was only 2 or 3 years removed from Santana's big splash at Woodstock which gave rise to "Latin" sounding music in the early '70s. In addition, the Sitar harks back to the work of Ravi Shankar and George Harrison and, finally, the electronic keyboard/organ is reminiscent of the Doors. This song is so rich in references it never fails to delight.
It is straight forward, brilliant, description of a gambling addict. "gunning for the man who stole your water"...he took all your original gambling stake. Can't have your stake life's blood/"water" taken away. So you pawn your watch or something to stay in the game. "And you fire 'til he is done in"...you take your money back, leave your opponent broke. "But they catch you at the border"...even when you win the addiction is still there. They don't "hang" you, the system doesn't cast you out, it puts you right back on the same path. Jack...as in jack in a deck of cards. Wheel turinin...roulette. Do it again...addiction. The two verses starting with "When you know she's no high climber" is the gambler describing a couple of hands of cards. The "Now you swear and kick" verse is openly about Vegas. "Black cards"...he back to looking at the cards in his hand. I do agree that Steely Dan often referenced human weakness in general (Deacon Blue is amazing), but I think Do It Again, is direct with its message. Knew a sharp woman whose father gambled away their house and she said, yes, the song was deadly accurate. Really enjoy your perspectives. Subscribed.
There was a public swimming pool called Birchwood swim club that my family was members of in the 70s and 80s. Steely Dan was on the loud speakers consistently. Whenever I hear them i think of the simpler life, the care-free life, and a life that once was. Steely Dan is always referred to as Birchwood music by me, my brother, and Birchwood friends i still connect with on social media. Such nostalgia and great memories.
There are times when the Mouth needs to be closed while the Ears need to be open....listening to Steely Dan is one of those times...Walter Becker unpicking the knots on the guitar.....🤗

I love to watch you guys boogie to the music i am 62 and grew up to this awesome rock yeah
A real bands band. Musicians are on their knees TODAY, sayin, I’m not worthy. Great band, great production and GREAT SONGS!!!
Steely Dan are gods.
Subscribed.
Love Steely Dan!! My faves by them have always been Hey Nineteen and FM(No Static At All) Keep On Rockin` guys!
FM a great song from a not so great movie.
Probably been answered, but a Steely Dan was an Electric chromed metal Vibrator from the early 1900s...
Great neck work again guys!
💛. From 🇬🇧🙋🏽♀️
Steely Dan is so great. This song is my favorite of theirs, but their catalog is AMAZING and deep.
Amazing instrumentation on every SD song.
I had forgotten just how bloody brilliant this band were! I haven't listened to this for years - need to dig out the LPs
Alright! You guys recognize genius when you hear it! You got to really explore this phenomenal band to give it its due.
It's great to see you lads of your age, appreciating music that thrilled us when we were your age. Thanks very much.
