When I was a little girl, my mama worked as a waitress at a diner/lunch counter in downtown Cincinnati, OH. She ate a piece of this pie with her lunch one day and went bonkers. The nice Jewish lady that she worked for scribbled down the recipe and I have it to this day. It truly is wonderful. Thanks for sharing.
Pie Baking Tip: If you want to use aluminum foil to prevent the crust from overbrowning, just take a piece of foil, cover the pie entirely and secure it over the edges. Then take scissors and cut the foil in a circle around the inside edge. It stays on so much better than using strips! Uses less foil than making strips and you can just throw it away after -- one less item to clean. 😊
I was so thankful to see that you had put this recipe on UA-cam. I was the clinic nurse for the chief of medicine at Vanderbilt medical center before I retired. We had a nurse that lived in Kentucky and drove to Vanderbilt to work in our clinic. Every year when it was time for Kentucky Derby she would bring a bunch of Derby pies and let me tell you they went as fast as we could inhale them. They are wonderful and I’ve always wished that I would have written that recipe down and now I have it thanks to you. 😊
Thank you for sharing this recipe. First time viewers in Ohio. We're originally from Kentucky (me) and South Carolina (husband). We had a "Derby" tradition with my Mom. If we'd had this recipe then I'd have made it to celebrate the Derby!
That was a sweet gesture. Like this channel already because I like these people! Their manner seems so genuine! Enjoyed this video very much. Keep 'em coming!

The fact that you actually scrape the bowls and utensils got you an instant sub from me. I can't stand waste, so it grinds my gears when I see people cook/bake, leaving a ton behind. Going to make this next week 😊 Thank you!!
I feel the exact same way and it drives me crazy. I got it from my mom. She never wasted those bits. The other thing I got from my mom is I don't understand why everybody always calls it a spatula when it's a rubber scraper. 😂
I think Tom has such a way with teaching this cooking channel he really takes his time but yet he gets right to the point and they're not hard. I really enjoy watching them. Watching from Michigan
My mom was given this recipe and made it for the family on Derby Day circa 1978. It was such a treat, we made it over and over again. It is a big hit still after all these years when it's made and shared with friends. I know the recipe by heart I've been asked for it so many times.
I worked in a restaurant in Illinois back in the 80's and we had a pie almost identical to this but it had bourbon in it as well. We'd serve it with a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream and hot fudge. It was great!
Thanks for this. Originally the pie fell into the classification of "Chess Pie" known as a very sweet pie that was offered up to travelers in the Kentucky area. Variations include rum soaked raisins instead of the chocolate pieces and also a meringue topping. Always a delight !
Cathie I see no reason why you couldn't exchange the sugars. Today's taste for sugar is nothing like it was years ago. I actually had to cut back on the sugar a bit for my taste. You'll find that this pie will be a favorite ! Should also mention that you can vary the nuts as well. @@cathiestarnes4812

My husband and I lived in Louisville for 20 years and were never able to attend the Derby. BUT I have made several different variations of Derby pie. This one is hands down the best! We just, in the last 3 months moved to Tennessee and I now have been on the hunt for the best Derby pie! Woohoo!!!🎉🎉🎉 Hands down THE best one! Thank you!!!😊
I liked that you shared the flour on the nuts and chips but I also liked that you measured with the pie server for people who are new to serving up a good pie.Thank you Melissa good camera work. To your chef!
@@randeebecker2455 I go overboard but I filled a quart jug with Maker's Mark and added thirty-four vanilla beans. That is what I call turbo vanilla, you really only need a dozen or so. Keeping the rest whole, after I've used a few tablespoons of this liquid gold, I just top the jar off with more bourbon. What a wonderful dessert to have whether it's after a sunny day at the Derby or on a rainy day after a comforting meal. Thank you so much! Wonderful looking pie! I learned something new from you on pie making and that was to dust the pecans and chips with flour. Great tip! Thanks for sharing your great recipes.
Obvious to all but the most novice cooks, but your instructions say the toss the pecans and nuts with flour. Should be corrected to nuts and chocolate chips.
My mother has made this pie, using an identical recipe, at Thanksgiving for at least 30 years. I started making it myself this year and have used brown sugar instead of white sugar. It's so good.

Woo hoo,I had been wanting this recipe for years. Thank you so much. I used to get a slice of this pie at a restaurant when they had it. Its a yummy pie.❤
Tell you something, this is not a pie you can get anywhere, yet Kentucky Derby Pie is a thing. My mouth actually watered, and I never had it! I will be making this. Wonderful video. Simple, right to the point and I have to say, you have got one of the most proper gentlemanly Southern accents,.....and that's coming from a NY Brooklynite.....lol. TY
I was born and raised in Kentucky and my aunt used to make these every year. I loved them but no one in Texas has heard of them. This is such an easy to follow video I might have to try making one myself. Thank you for this!
I've lived in Texas all my 71yrs and I've made this pie forever! It's called Chess pie or Buttermilk pie....you can also use a small amount of cornmeal. We don't use the chocolate chips though and no flour. Don't know where you live in Texas, but I've never met any old time cooks here that don't know what it is.
Thanks for sharing this recipe. I tried it out and my husband, quite the pie connoisseur, said that Kentucky Derby pie is now his second favorite pie. Nothing but cherry will be in first place. Ever. But we all enjoyed this recipe immensely. Thanks again.
I'm from Louisville Kentucky, now living in Florida and I'm going to make this for my future in laws (From NY) for Thanksgiving, with down home pride!! Thanks guys!! 😁
This has got to be one of the best cooking videos I have ever watched. I stumbled across youtube tonight and straight into your kitchen! What an awesome surprise! I have to tell you, my mouth watered while watching you taste that pie at the end. Haha! What a simple recipe but Oh so good, I'm sure! Thank you both for sharing. I look forward to spending more time in your kitchen. Greetings from East Tennessee...
Ok I had to improvise here in California .Instead of Vanilla extract,I used almond extract .Instead of dark chocolate I used white plus I added dried cranberries and sweetened condensed milk with my margarine brown sugar and finally walnuts instead of Pecans . OMG its amazing . I call it "Hollywood Park pie" from California inspired by Your Kentucky Derby Pie.Tomorrow Ill check in when I can get to the store that has all the original ingredients .Taste test competition tomorrow .Thank you two !!!!! From California .
Holy Smokes!! I could literally taste this pie. I reminds me of home made chocolate chip cookies without the brown sugar. I always make toll house cookies for our family camping trips but I’m thinking I should surprise everyone with this pie on our next trip. I just subscribed and thank you for sharing!
30 years ago a coworker brought this pie to a party and I absolutely fell in love with it. He share the recipe with me then, but I lost it. Thanks for sharing this. Definitely making it soon. 😊😍
Kentucky girl here... My mom used to make this pie all the time when I was a kid. I live in Tennessee now and I want to make it for a work potluck for this Friday (and the Derby is Saturday, so I knew I had to make one and show my coworkers how we Kentuckians do things)... But my Mom can't find her recipe!!! Ahhh!! How does that even happen?!?! Lol... but You're coming through for me, Dude!! Much appreciation! Happy Derby 2024!
Thank you for another great recipe. As an Australian, I have not heard of this pie before and am glad you described it in such detail. I shall try it soon!
O M G.... that pie looks soo yummy. I will definitely be making it for me and my family. But I will njoy the first piece 😁 I am grateful for your channel. And for you and your wife, showing; teaching all the delicious recipes you make. Thank you all the way from Colorado.
Nice to meet you! As a West Coast Gal, this pie is new to me, but since it's made with all good stuff, I'm sure it's undoubtedly delicious! I was pleasantly surprised how it rose in the crust and didn't at all look like you should have added another 50%! Although my cooking for our family excludes white flour and white sugar, Ive learned to find alternatives. I'll look forward to seeing what other deliciousness us served at your table... or counter!!! Thanks for the invite! Stay safe, Be blessed, Give thanks!
That looks absolutely delicious! You guys are great people with kindness in your makeup.❤ Tom, your clear and concise directions are perfect for a kinesthetic learner like me. It's almost as if I was there. Thank you.

@@comesitatmytable9044 That's funny because pecans actually float to the top of a pecan pie!🤔 And you really didn't add any salt to balance the flavors?🤔
All I needed to hear was you have been making this pie for 40 years and I was sold. I love Kentucky, my first duty station was at Fort Knox and consider it my second home. I appreciate this recipe and can't wait to make this at home! So glad I found this channel and can't wait to see what else you guys share. Have a blessed day!
I love KY Derby Pie. I’ve made it since the late 70’s. One difference though, the way I’ve been told, is the pie you made is a DERBY PIE, to be a KENTUCKY DERBY PIE, you soak the pecans in one half cup of good Kentucky Bourbon. Either way it’s a great pie, and I’ve made it both ways. Being from KY & the Bible Belt, you don’t want to take the one with bourbon to a Baptist Church Social……….love that you are from Mt. Sterling, I’m from Ashland.
Wow, I'm so glad I found your channel! My husband actually found you and showed me. We love how you explain everything and lay all your ingredients out. I'm going to make this pie tomorrow! I've checked out all of your recipes and have to say, I've going to try and make them all. Thank you so much!
You both are so sweet!! Thanks for inviting us into your lovely kitchen. I cannot wait to try this recipe. Pecan pie is my favorite and adding chocolate chips is the icing on the cake. No wait the cherry on top. 😊 😉 May God bless and keep you both!! 🙏
Hello, so over here in Canada we do not have any sort of Derby let alone a Kentucky derby., but you caught my attention with pie! Pie oh my everyone loves pie. My absolute favourite part of your video is when you gave the first bite to your wife. Literally brought tears to my eyes. I loved that!! You two are adorable. I will definitely try your pie it looks delicious. Have a delicious Derby. Lol.
Lightly sprinkle flour on bottom of pie crust Before adding filling A friend who makes lots of pies taught me that. I have 2 of your derby pies in oven right now. I’m excited to try Thanks for sharing God Bless
A Derby Pie is one of my favs, too. But I have always used a recipe that includes corn syrup & then the other ingredients minus the flour. However, if it is baked too long it can be hard (pecans like candy). I am really excited to try your recipe, you made it SO easily & it looks DELICIOUS! Thank you!
I just pulled this out of the oven. Can’t wait to taste it. Your videos are very well done. I like how you lay out the ingredients and make it simple to understand. We have been enjoying your videos. Thank you!!
Thank you for this recipe, I have been trying to find these in the stores around Derby time. I almost ordered them, but seeing this video just saved me a lot of money❤
You can definitely make your own cheaper than most places will charge to make it for you. Tip: I love to warm a slice up in the microwave for a few seconds before I eat it. So good! Thanks so much for watching.
I am excited to make and try this pie! When I was growing up, my favorite pie was Egg Custard pie (and still is). It's hard to find in a restaurant though and I need to learn to make it! :) I am enjoying your recipes ! Thanks for all you and your wife do to make it possible!
Hi Tom & Melissa! I will have to make this pie for some friends! I don’t usually eat rich foods like this, but splurge every now & again. Tom, what made me laugh & what I liked is that you got EVERY DROP of butter, not wasting anything! I cringe when people leave half of the ingredients in bowls, or else scrape them off camera. I always feel they are throwing food away or their recipe is not right, because the don’t add 100% of the ingredients to the mixing bowl. Thank You! I didn’t cringe, but laughed out loud instead and felt good watching you put it together. Also, I am left handed too. All my life we were told that left handed people were more artistic and very creative, and you seem to be the same. I am you guys age, and love to cook, so thank you for sharing. And, how did this pie get it’s name? Was it ever served at the races?
❤ I fixed this two nights ago. The three of us ABSOLUTELY loved it. I'm so glad I found your channel. I plan to make the Kool Aid pie tomorrow and the Chicken and Dumpling Casserole later next week 😊
The Kool aid pie is delicious I've been making for my family for more than ten years. Many years ago long b4 I retired a lady make one, brought it to work & shared it with us, but would not share the recipe. So I made it from taste at first I add a pkg of room temperature cream cheese to my can of condensed milk. It was really good, but whenever I made it at other for one of my coworkers I omitted the cream cheese, cause she didn't like the cream cheese. I just found this channel & immediately became a fan & subscriber😉
The description recipe is great for when I make the dish. The video is great for visuals, tips, tricks and enjoyment. This looks delicious. Have a favorite horse in this year’s Derby?
We did watch the derby but we aren’t very “schooled” in horse racing. We never have any hot tips. I usually go with one that has a name I like. Great way to bet, I know! 🤪
It looks like you reached that 3,000 subscriber goal plus some. Congratulations! I have never had a Kentucky Derby pie but it's definitely going to be the next thing I try. It looks DELICIOUS. Thank you so much for sharing! ❤🙏😊
I love all your recipes. The same dishes that I grew up with. At 85, I don’t cook as well as I’m used to. Yes I was raised on a farm but the cows weren’t ‘ fresh’, I think that’s the word for it, nor chickens weren’t putting the eggs. There was 10 of us! Mother always cut the pie in fourths, she baked at least three. Do love your videos!
Thanks for sharing! I'm a Kentucky gal and will be sharing the Derby Pie recipe on my channel along with mint juleps. I enjoyed watching your presentation. Good job! Yum! Yum!😊
I found the recipe for K..D. Pie in an old cookbook my Mom had when I was in high school. The cookbook was old in the mid 80's! This pie has been served at every Christmas and Thanksgiving since! If you love warm, gooey Chocolate Chip Cookies you will love this pie!!
I love the simplicity of your recipes, and they are really good. You also do an exceptional job of showing how to put it all together. My dad’s family are originally from Southeastern Kentucky. We currently live in Alabama but still have a large family of relatives in the Bluegrass State.
Thanks for this recipe! We just had our community pie social last weekend and I made 18 pies for it. Your recipe is going on my list for the next pie social in the spring. It looks great and I'm sure everyone will love it! ❤❤❤

I love pecan pie, and chocolate chip cookie dough, and this looks like a combo of both! Can't wait to try this! Thank you!
It is.
The pie crimping looks just amazing! Way better than a lot of other videos that I watch on pies
Just found you recently . Love watching. Just subscribed. 😊
Woo hoo,I had been wanting this recipe for years. Thank you so much. I used to get a slice of this pie at a restaurant when they had it. Its a yummy pie.❤
We agree! It really is a delicious pie. Thank you very much for watching our video.
TY
I bought the scraper blade for my kitchenaid also. It's really a time saver.
The Derby Pie looks so delicious. Thank You for sharing the recipe 😊👍❤️🥧
You are so welcome. We hope you enjoy it.
Oh my word....my sister fixed this and it was gone in a flash. Love all your videos.
Hey you’ve got plenty of time to restock before the derby on Saturday! 😊Thank you so much for watching!
I was born and raised in Kentucky and my aunt used to make these every year. I loved them but no one in Texas has heard of them. This is such an easy to follow video I might have to try making one myself. Thank you for this!
You’re so welcome. You definitely need to introduce your Texas friends to this wonderful pie! They’ll love you for it!
I love any type of pecan pie. But,have not had this pie! I will now. Thank you
I've lived in Texas all my 71yrs and I've made this pie forever!
I love how down to earth you are! Now I don't feel bad about using my fingers to scrape the mixing blades. 😊
Yes! Every smidgeon!😂
This looks so good! Love the way you lay out and show all the ingredients before starting to cook. By the way,bet you were a great teacher!
I thank you so much for putting the recipes in the drop box.
How much sw cond milk?
Love this recipe! I’m a Ky. girl and I appreciate all your recipes! I love how you explain everything too!
I think you did an awesome job fluting the edge of your pie crust. I think it's beautiful!
Thanks so much! 😊 We appreciate the nice comment!
I think he did a good job too, it looked great!!
Tom must be a perfectionist because that pie crust was "gorge"ous! 😍
The pie looks amazing!!! Thank you for the video and the recipe ❤
You guys are so sweet together! Its so nice to see especially in this day and age! Love the recipes! Thank you for taking the time to share with us!❤️
That looks so yummy, like a chocolate chip cookie in a pie! I can't wait to try this!
I thought that too! For all of us who love snitching a spoonful of cookie dough, this is a must!
Thank you for another great recipe. As an Australian, I have not heard of this pie before and am glad you described it in such detail. I shall try it soon!
O M G.... that pie looks soo yummy. I will definitely be making it for me and my family. But I will njoy the first piece 😁
I am grateful for your channel. And for you and your wife, showing; teaching all the delicious recipes you make. Thank you all the way from Colorado.
It's so nice to have you at the table with us. We really do appreciate your kind comments. You are such an encouraging person. Thank you so much.
Thank you for sharing your Derby Pie recipe. It looks easy to make and so delicious. I can’t wait to make it and share it with my family.
I thought the same thing! The filling rose up really well. It didn’t look scant.
That looks absolutely delicious! You guys are great people with kindness in your makeup.❤ Tom, your clear and concise directions are perfect for a kinesthetic learner like me. It's almost as if I was there. Thank you.
We’re thrilled to have you watching. We really appreciate your kind comments. Thank you so much!
I love the typed instructions, and I’ve almost stopped looking at any recipe that asks you to click on another site.
The DIRECTIONS are as important as the recipe itself! 😂❤
I’ll be back.
You remind me of my husband and I busy in the kitchen making something good!
@@comesitatmytable9044
That's funny because pecans actually float to the top of a pecan pie!🤔
And you really didn't add any salt to balance the flavors?🤔

All I needed to hear was you have been making this pie for 40 years and I was sold. I love Kentucky, my first duty station was at Fort Knox and consider it my second home. I appreciate this recipe and can't wait to make this at home! So glad I found this channel and can't wait to see what else you guys share. Have a blessed day!
Welcome home! We love having you at our table. We have many videos so we hope you find some more recipes to enjoy!
The pie looks so delicious 😊
Lol.
Lightly sprinkle flour on bottom of pie crust
Before adding filling
A friend who makes lots of pies taught me that.
I have 2 of your derby pies in oven right now.
I’m excited to try
Thanks for sharing
God Bless
Why sprinkle flour?
@@adjustableisland8806 keeps from getting soggy
A Derby Pie is one of my favs, too. But I have always used a recipe that includes corn syrup & then the other ingredients minus the flour. However, if it is baked too long it can be hard (pecans like candy). I am really excited to try your recipe, you made it SO easily & it looks DELICIOUS! Thank you!
This is a cool & delicious looking pie, kind of cookie-ish. I love it, thank you. I could eat that entire pie also.
It’s VERY rich! We absolutely love it, though.
I’m thinking vanilla ice cream would also go well with it.
I never had a pie like this. I love trying new things, and this looks like it would be easy enough for me to make. TYSM.
This looks yummy! I love a time-tested recipe--will definitely make a note of increasing filling 50% for deep dish pies. Thanks!
We hope you find it as delicious as we did!
It looks sooo yummy! I'm going to make one right away.!" Thank you for writing out the rescipe.
This pie looks so good!!!🥧
I am excited to make and try this pie! When I was growing up, my favorite pie was Egg Custard pie (and still is). It's hard to find in a restaurant though and I need to learn to make it! :) I am enjoying your recipes ! Thanks for all you and your wife do to make it possible!
If you like egg custard pie, you should try buttermilk pie. Not the same but very good.
my dad's favorite pie and mine too...and coconut custard pie too !
I love how you gave her the first bite! Can't wait to try this recipe.
Irish lady here. I just found your channel and am so glad I did. I will, for sure, try this lovely pie.
I don’t know but I think it’s a possibility. I would serve it if i was in charge of the Derby!
It looks scrumptious! God bless you for sharing your baking secrets.
Thank you so much for watching. Hope you can enjoy this pie soon.
My brother used to live near Louisville and sent me one for my birthday. It's excellent.
I have never heard of this pie before but it looks super good and I just have to make this 😊 Thank you Tom and Melissa for sharing ❤❤
This pie looks amazing! Can’t wait to try this. Thanks for sharing this recipe.
I made this pie in the 80's from a recipe that I got from the Courier Journal. It was so rich and yummy. You guys do a great job
Bravo . I could almost taste your pie. I will be sure to try it.
I can't wait to try this pie. Your directions are so complete and I'll bet you were a great teacher!
Ingredients great makes me anticipate baking &easing first time I've watched you guys
Yum! That looks positively divine! Y’all have me about to run out to the store late at night for a pie crust!
Love Kentucky, love the Derby, love the memories still have family there and in Indiana.
I can't wait to try this pie, it looks so yummy. Thank you for sharing this with us. 💕
Thanks for sharing! I'm a Kentucky gal and will be sharing the Derby Pie recipe on my channel along with mint juleps. I enjoyed watching your presentation. Good job! Yum! Yum!😊
Thank you fellow Kentuckian! Enjoy Derby Day!
I've never had this pie, but I'm pretty sure that's gonna change in the next couple days. Looks awesome!
18 pies? Wow!!
I can’t wait to go to the store later and get the ingredients for this pie. It looks wonderful!.
