    I've been making this cake since I was knee high to a grasshopper ... taught to me by my Grandma. I do have to give one suggestion. The recipe by Grandma used said to stir in the vanilla to your topping right before you put it on your cake. If you add at the beginning, you're literally cooking all the vanilla out of the topping. Food for thought. Love your channel.

      You're not cooking the vanilla out that way. You'd be cooking the alcohol out and leaving the flavor of the vanilla.

      It is a rule of baking to add flavorings after removing from the heat it prevents burning(scorching) the essence.

      @ethelnewberry151 Рік тому +2

      No...That information is not true. The reason being by adding it last, while it is still cooking, the Alcohol is cooked out of it. It only needs rapid cooking for thirty seconds or so, over a good medium fire, just so it bubbles up.

    That looks amazing to try. Please try to get into the habit of pouring hot liquids away from you not towards you. My late F-I-Law was a retired cheif Fireman. He once told me that many of their calls were burn related accidents while cooking. I had been draining hot water from boiled potatoes like how you just poured your topping on. He saw me & immediately corrected me. I always remember that. Scalding hot burns to the skin can lead to months of recovery. Please don't think that I am being rude pointing this out, better safe than sorry. Going to make that cake today. Merry Christmas. 🎄💕

    When I was growing up, my mom use to make a topping similar to yours except she used crushed walnuts. Once the topping was on she would broil it in the oven for a couple minutes until it started bubbling, then she took it out. The topping when cooled had a real nice taste and texture to it. I recall her using this on chocolate cake and a few other kinds. Love your video!

    I love love love pineapple, pecans and coconut!!!thanks for this recipe...It’s good to watch all the way through because the icing I think has to be somewhat caramelized with the Sugar and pecans.
    Boiling snd semi-boiling for your time frame makes a difference.
    Thanks for demonstrating that the icing on the side warm from the pad because that helps the instructions. too.
    I like your poke hole tool!!
    (Handle bottom!)👍🏻

      Well you don't have to worry about getting in the veg storage or basement with this lovely cake. Amazing. Yes I. Bet you could use that icing recipe for the German chocolate cake. Love the simplicity of it and and you remind me of my sweet Beloved mother. Such a sweet and gentle mommy voice like yours dearest Marie. God bless you and your lovely families today, tomorrow, and always,. Missing home. Thoughtfully Yvonne Haddrell in UK.

    This cake came out in the 1960 ,s in a Texas news paper . Fruit Cocktail Cake. this the same recipe that I use today. I Have also used tropical fruit cut in smaller pieces. To make a real wet cake, double the icing recipe.

      I just did another one of these. On this one I lined the bottom of the baking dish with pineapple slices and for nuts I used a combo of pecans and walnuts. Other than that, the ingredients stayed the same. I've been using a 10 x 14 dish so I increased some the ingredients just a tad to compensate. It works!
