So I literally went for a trim on my horseshoe shaped hair cut yesterday and my hairstylist suggested a perm...but then retracted fairly quick- stating "perms are evil" Only because of the chemicals and damage it does to hair. But I have gotten so many perms in my youth (hurray for 80's hair) and I know the damage it can cause. So looking to see if the benefit outweighs the consequences- is totally a personal decision. Your video helped me so much and I think I will take the plunge and try a perm. Thank you!! 🤩
Thank you for watching and commenting! I'm so pleased my video was helpful. You're absolutely right about whether the pros outweigh the cons being up to the individual to decide- I know for me it certainly paid off! Best of luck for your perm! ♥️
This is definitely the way forward! I like how your sets are curlier since having your perm - I think they look better this way! I also think you looked great with only the curls from your perm just after getting it! I love your vintage styles, but I think you should experiment with styling just your perm curls for a change every now and then - you look great this way too! I assume you will be continuing to get perms from now on?
Yes indeed! I'm also loving the curlier sets. It helps the curl last so much longer too. Ha ha, thank you- personally the unstyled perm looks a bit too 1980s for my taste. And for sure, I will certainly be getting my hair permed again in the future. It's such a game changer! :)
Very interesting video! Just found you and subscribed :) My hair structure is pretty similar to yours by the looks of it, but it holds the curl quite well, especially after a wet set. These days however I prefer a heat set more, and usually the next day it's pretty flat. But I can't thank enough the inventor of a hair net, have you tried sleeping in it? It's a game changer! I guess now that the hair is not flattened by my sleepy and sweaty neck, lol, it behaves wonderfully!
Thank you for your comment, happy to have you here! ♥️ I've never tried a heat set actually- do you use hot rollers? And I have thought about getting my hands onto a hair net so my hair keeps its shape overnight. I'm glad to hear it works for you, now I must try it out myself! ♥️
@@MelinaMeineke I just use a modern curling iron and pin until the hair cools down 😄 Foam rollers give me way too tight of a curl and I end up looking like 1939 Norma Shearer, which is not my style. After the curling iron it's a little more relaxed and a little more 40-50's, and also a lot less frizzy 😅
It's really a great idea to help with styling!I've been struggling with this question. Do you still use styling agent when do the wet set after perm? Could you recommend which one if you use it?😊
Thanks for watching! The only thing I used was my regular flaxseed setting lotion to wet-set my hair after the perm. I definitely reccomend it if you haven't tried it yet- it's so easy to make and helps the curls hold really well! ♥️
Wow--after your hair adjusted to the perm, your wet set results looked exactly like authentic 1940s pictures! Glad it worked out so well for you! Do you know whether perms are less damaging these days than they used to be, or if perhaps there are strengthening and protecting hair products that reduce the effects of that damage better than back in the day?
Thank you- I think so, too! I'm so happy with the results. As for your question- I'm not exactly sure, but it could be a bit of both! I feel like, with perms having been around for quite a while, there probably will have been some improvements made to the method as to ensure hair isn't damaged as much. And it is recommended to use hydrating shampoo and conditioner on permed hair- for the procedure is very drying- so there's definitely truth in what you say :)
Thankyou so much for doing this video, its just what I needed. My daughter is going to perm my fine hair tomorrow and I'm quite nervous. I set my hair in the morning and have to wear rollers all day and the next night and even then if its windy it looks a mess, so I'm hoping the perm will help. Thankyou.x
What size rollers/rods did you have them use? Also, did they set it in a particular pattern? I had a perm done that’s pretty good for a wash and go style but I don’t really feel like the random rod placement my stylist used was the best option to support my pin curl wet sets.
My hairdresser used the biggest perm rods for my hair since I just wanted a wavy base for my vintage sets. As for a pattern, all the rods were rolled downwards (which I do for my regular wet sets too) and just in even rows around my head which I think is just the standard pattern for perms. I'm sorry to hear that your perm doesn't suit your pin curl sets! Hopefully you end up finding a solution ♥️
I'd love to know about what you asked for when you got it done Also how does it hold up in rainy or foggy weather? Even the slightest fog and I'll get to work after my bike ride with chunks all straight (it's hard to cover with a bike Hemet on) and it makes me want to cry everytime😅
Hello! I just explained to the hairdresser what I wanted the perm for (a base to help my roller set last longer) and she ended up using the largest size perm roller so my hair didn't end up too curly. That ended up being the perfect choice! As for the weather, I'd say the perm holds up a lot better than my natural hair did, although sadly when it's very foggy or humid it does still fall... so it's certainly not perfect (though still more durable than my normal hair)! And when it gets rained on I get that lovely '80s look, ha ha. Ahhh, I'm so sorry to hear that about your hair. I hate it when that happens! It's heartbreaking. Have you perhaps tried a headscarf under your helmet? I have no idea whether it would make a difference but maybe it's worth a try. ♥️
@@MelinaMeineke thank you, I think I'll definitely look at doing it when I grow my bleach out, 80s hair would probably look better than my straight hair in its baby midi cut😅 Yeah a hair scarf helps and I usually have a spare one in my bag I case it's to far gone to fix😅 I'm waiting on a rain bonnet to come in the mail so I'll see how that goes too
Nowadays I comb my hair instead of brushing it- my permed hair puffs and frizzes up with a brush, like you mentioned. But luckily I can still style my hair like usual- it just took a little while to get used to combing it instead. ♥️
To be frank with you, I have wavy/curly hair, with quite a lot of volume that after my hair is curled it still got a little too much volume. But when I add rose oil, it helps a little, I thought it would be a lot easier having normal straight or slightly wavy hair because my hair becomes fluffy around the air. Anyone experiencing the same thing? How can I fix this?
@@MelinaMeinekeoh wow ! You've lived in NZ since you were 8 . May I ask how you retained such a strong german accent ? Most people lose theirs when they move abroad as a child . Love your videos!! ☺️
@@_year-sb6sy Funnily enough I did have a New Zealand accent for quite a few years. But I didn't like how it sounded so I switched back to the German accent! Strange, I know, but I like my accent as it is 😊
We need a 12 month perm update!
Funnily enough I'm actually working on a perm-related video right now! It's planned for the end of the month 😊

It holds the vintage style better when I was in highschool i permed my hair and the pincurl set I use too do was beautiful.
Another amazing video Melina❤ your uploads are the highlight of me week
Thank you so much! I'm very honoured to hear that! ♥️
I have been doing hair for 30 years. And I believe 9 out of 10 women could use a perm.
Wow, 30 years, that's so impressive! I have to agree, at least in my case, a perm made such a great difference ♥️
I am also thinking to do it.
