+EvanNova95 James Luceno also makes a reference to "Dark Lord the Rise of Darth Vader." The reference is made when the Emperor and Vader are talking about the mission to Murkhana. Palpatine says that Vader had been there before to preform an execution.
I listened to the audiobook. It was made that much better by the fact that it was voiced by Euan Morton, the voice of the Sith Inquisitor in SWTOR. It's like my character was reading the book!
Its been a while, but after TLJ, I wanted to take a look at Cannon SW and see what material was really golden. This novel is that shining gem. Pretty sure you can include this in the classic EU. Praise James Luceno's quality work!
Wait... Tarkin a background character? He's like the third most important Imperial character in the OT, after Vader and Palpatine. The guy blew up Leia's homeworld! I know he's not the most action-oriented character in the films, being he never leaves the Death Star, but he's hardly a background character. As for the actual book, I've already read it, loved it, and am reading it again! I love the little nods Luceno gives to the problems Peter Cushing had with the army boots, by having Tarkin complaining about ill-fitting boots when he's designing the new Imperial uniform (which is another thing I liked, that the post-Clone Wars era Imperial officer's outfit was designed by him).
He is a background in a sense that he is not a main character in a character-story sense, if you catch my drift. He definitely has a huge impact plot-wise. But the story doesn't (or at least originally didn't) revolve around him in any way. He was basically in the movie to establish how assholes the imperial higher ups are, IMO. Wether to truly call him a background character or not is debetable, of course. Talking strictly about the OT alone, I'd put him in the same group as Boba Fett, they are there to forward the plot for the main characters. The most important characters in the OT would be Luke and Vader, then Leia and Solo as a close second. I want to put Palpatine in with Leia and Solo, but he is in the movies for such a short period, and his character isn't really established until RotJ is nearing its end, so I can't decide wether to put him in that ranking, or near the 3rd with 3PO, R2 and Lando. Tarkin and Fett would be on my 4th ranking. Of course, this is just my opinion.
But the thing is that that is it. He never gets the focus outside of that 1 scene. Unlike Vader who had several scene's where he's the focus. Like his interactions with Leia, Ben and in his starfighter against Luke. Not helping Tarkin also is that in every scene he is in Vader is as well and really draws all the attention. Also Tarkin is only in New Hope. When he dies he's gone and they never refer to him ever again.
I've watched every single video from Jensaraii, EvanNova and GreyJedi, however I am only now being introduced to you and Antoine. I welcome you and have subscribed. I am very fond of this inter-video friendship and love of Star Wars you share. I look forward to more
Yeah, Antoine and I are definitely the "new kids on the block". (Though it's almost been a year, eesh.) Antoine is more than a match for the others though, he churns out an episode a week when he's on form. I'm trailing behind thanks to my slower creation speed, but I hope I can improve. Frankly it's an honour to be counted among the people I've watched for so long. I've been a fan of GreyJedi and Jensaarai since they began and Evan a few months after he started. Antoine and I started the very same week funnily enough, he got in touch for the collaboration and the rest is history. I hope my videos do not disappoint. (The quality of all my videos has been appalling up until ua-cam.com/video/e4gxnfHrnnI/v-deo.html so bear that in mind if you watch the others I've made.)
Tarkin is probably the most intellectual Star Wars novel yet released. Everything from the politics, the military tactics, the survival training, and Tarkins raw pragmatism leads to a very articulate and well documented look at tarkins philosophies and reasoning for his command skills. P.s. James Luceno top theee books in my opinion are Darth Plagueis, DarK Lord the Rise of Darth Vader, and Tarkin.( though I admit that labyrinth of evil is probably tied with Darth Plagueis as my personal favorite)
With the new canon taking over I need to start reading these newer novels. I'm not too thrilled about this one, but the Lords of the Sith and Quinlan Vos novels seem interesting to me. I may pick this one up, anyway. As for channels, I think it's fine on Reti4's. He having the least subscribers could get him some more and we've had two videos here, so far. For topics, I'd enjoy "Rebels" reviews. I don't see them often, and when I do it's blatant hate rather than constructive criticism. It's also keep these consistent, so that's good. I'm really enjoying these, hope you can keep it up!
The original Quinlan was the "I'm a Jedi, Ladies feel the Force?" version from the Republic comics version. It was the CW Multimedia comics that retconned him FIRST into a brooding emo 90ies Antihero clishé. TCW just returned to the original.
Thanks for the review of this book. I skipped the spoiler section AND the comments because I'm going to actually read the book now. I'd pretty much read anything that Luceno writes because he's awesome.
No problem, I recommend returning to finish the video when you have read it, I felt some interesting discussion was had. I definitely agree, he's a great writer, despite some of the criticisms we bring up here.
Reti4 It's funny, I JUST downloaded the book and I just got to the spoiler section of the video when you replied. I heard a very interesting comment about how there are a lot of references to his previous book to make sure that it's canon and I just think that's super awesome because it SHOULD be canon because it was awesome and added so much to the story that I can actually stand to go back and watch the prequels. But anyway, just starting into the book. Should have it read in the next couple of days and I definitely will come back and finish this video.
Got this and Darth Plagueis for Christmas. I just finished Plagueis Monday, and it was fantastic. Hopefully this one holds up for me, but Luceno is great, so I don't have much to worry about. :P
You guys, that was a great podcast/breakdown. My only minor qualm that I had was maybe check Evan's mic levels, he was significantly louder than everyone else. And did anyone else feel like they could start a drinking game with the amount of times Evan held up a book?
Does the Council have a 'list of SWEU material recommendations' type of thing? I'd like to experience more of the EU (even though it's decannonized now, but I don't care) but where do I start? Excluding this book of course XD.
Sadly still not read the book but concerning Evannova95 saying there's no reference to Dark Lord Rise of Darth Vader, I hear the Battle of Murkhana is mentioned in Tarkin (the same battle from the beginning of Dark Lord). Is that true?
And also the Star Destroyer Executrix (from Dark Lord) makes it's "first" appearance in Tarkin (I'm getting this info from wookieepedia since I still don't own the book - but I will buy it and read it because Luceno does write some of the greatest Star Wars novels ever)
I've got to say, of all the Forcecasts episodes, this one is my favorite. I came across this book when I downloaded the Darth Bane trilogy onto my kindle. But while I was looking through, I came across a pre-order for a new novel coming out in April. It's called "Lords of the Sith." You've probably already heard about it (I seem to be that guy who gets news last). Basically, during a siege of ryloth, Vader and Palpatine's ship is shot down, stranding the two Sith on the planet, being mercilessly hunted by Twi'lek rebel leader Cham Syndulla. It got me curious because it showed something I don't think I'd ever seen before: Palpatine on the battlefield. Anywho, I'm digressing. I was wondering, after it came out, if you guys were planning to do a similar review of it.
Okay, so I finished reading the book a few days ago and just had a chance to make it back to your video to finish it. You guys certainly made some interesting points but the thing that stood out most is that half the group looks to be getting sick.
We did notice that yes. Jensaarai and Antoine both have coughs and Evan has a skin infection. I'm fine though, Sod will probably smite me for saying it but I haven't been ill for 8 years. (Not counting the very occasional, minor headache)
i think Ahsoka has already been in Rebels, i noticed that one of the containers in 'out of darkness' has the same symbol Ahsoka has on her forehead, and Fulcrum is VERY secretive which could be to prevent Vader and the empire from learning about her
Reti4 let me just say this was an interesting podcast. I always thought it was very odd for Palpatine to place Tarkin above vader, but after hearing everyones thoughts on this book, I just might change my mind after I read this book.. As for a title suggestion how about Masters of the Force? As for future subjects could you perhaps do a review on a particular series? For example Legacy of the force Star Wars Legacy, Clone Wars Comic series, etc. The amount of energy you all bring to the table really is something. Really am excited for the next episode Reti4 as you really lead the group well. Thank you for this episode.
Just as good as the last one! Glad to see the Versus Community coming closer together. Perhaps Star Wars gaming could be a future topic? Hell, you could do a whole thing on the Jedi Knight series and you'd sum up all I did from 1st grade to 4th grade! (Only 8 year old who new who Kyle Katarn was!)
'Glad you enjoyed it. The Versus community's always been close, we just haven't managed to show that off too much until recently. We now have the technology. We're discussing a range of different topic options for upcoming episodes, I have no doubt that the various games we have all played will get one at some point.
I have to say Reti, it really says something when you answer community questions and verify things on your channel. Not many UA-camrs take the time to address and really relate to their community. It's cool to see someone who takes the time to do that so regularly!
***** It sounds cheesy and run of the mill, but reading the comments after posting a video is the most satisfying part of the process. If nobody commented and all we had was a view and subscriber count then we creators would have a very hollow experience. The least I can do in return is reply to as many comments as possible, especially when I have such a kind viewer-ship.
I would also say that episode reviews of 'Rebels' would probably keep you guys out of trouble for the foreseeable future. I'd love to see a podcast on what each you feels was the high and low watermarks of the now 'Legends' continuity as the actual canon-canon is now a thing in all of our lives. I'm curious to see how what each you feels where the old Expanded Universe really worked and where it didn't. Maybe even a separate podcast in terms of characters who were introduced in 'Legends' that should survive into 'Canon' and why. I'm looking in your general direction; Mara, Jaina, Saba, and Kyle. The general consensus that i'm seeing for a name to your podcast is something like; 'The High Council Podcast' or the 'Hi-C Podcast' to it's friends.
We will definitely be looking at Rebels at some point, just a case of how we approach it. We will also definitely be looking at Legends and all the changes to original canon as they come, as it stands currently, our next episode is going to be about retcons, so you can expect a Jensaarai heavy podcast this time around :) We're in the final stages of agreeing on a name, we'll almost certainly have it decided by the next episode.
The Council of Consulars could be a cool one the idea of putting Consular into the name obviously being that they are typically viewed as intellectuals when compared to their guardian counterparts. Since your making videos that analyze and break things down. Jedi counsel I think is a cool idea but doesn't necessarily have the best ring to it. Additionally, I don't know if you plan to JUST keep it Star Wars but if not I think that Order Of The White Lotus could be a cool one as well since I know at least Jensaarai, Evan, and I think GreyJedi (if he joins you) all like Avatar.
Wow, I'm defiantly going to read this book now. But im shocked that Tarkin had the authority to order Vader to do ANYTHING. I thought Vader released that guy because HE wanted to, not because he was ordered and obeyed.... I thought only Sidous even dared to give Vader orders, not Tarkin, no Thawn, not anyone.
Tarkin and Vader are amusing together to say the least. They both have a mutual respect for one another, despite the underlying differences and resentments from the past. I'm glad we've got you intrigued, that was our number one goal with this podcast.
Great job u should continue and I know this isn't ur vs series channel but could u do like a dooku vs Sidious or do a collaboration for windu and yoda vs dooku and Sidious or vader which ever u see plausible but good job to all u guys and don't stop doing it
Excellent job as always gentleman. Is GreyJedi91 still on the fence about remaining a Star Wars fan? It'd be awesome to see all 5 of you in collaboration. Thanks again and may the Force be with you
Thanks, we're glad you enjoyed it. Don't worry about Greyjedi91, Jensaarai was largely joking when he said his Star Wars flame had burnt low. He made an video on his channel explaining his situation and what his plans are at the moment. Watch that and know that we will be posting an episode within the next 24 hours (upload allowing).
I felt sympathy for the younger Tarkin before he was basically tortured by his family into become a horrific monster just as twisted and evil and Darth Sidious
guys it would be amazing if all of you could have a debate on New Jedi Order vs Old, and even if you're all of the same opinion it would be great to hear your reasons, or (and this may be more interesting because im fairly certain you all have differing views on it) what the best sith group is, just to put my vote in there, ONE SITH
Not sure if we'll be doing a video dedicated to that one, but we are introducing a proper format for our episodes from now on. One segment being responses to comments/emails from viewers; so I'm sure this request will be fulfilled at some point. (And if all else fails, Evan and I are bound to work it into the conversation sooner or later, we love discussing both Orders and their differences.)
Reti4 Just as a side note, something I'm sure a lot of star wars fans have wondered about, what if galen marek survived the first force unleashed game(going of the view point that the clone from the second game is not the actual guy), and if you haven't already, something of a reference, this fanfiction(www.fanfiction.net/s/4569956/1/Star-Wars-Marek-s-Rebellion) in my opinion does a phenomenal job of addressing this and almost seamlessly incorporates galen into the original trilogy, but the only thing I can't reconcile is how this "arc" would affect the following years with the thrawn conflict, jedi academy and so on, I know this is a long message
Indeed, it's already written, it's just a case of when I record it (The most painful part of the creating process for me). I actually already made one, before Evan and Antoine, last year. It was the first video I ever did but it was terrible so I took it down after just a month. Rest assured this one will be of better quality, when it gets here.
Very cool podcast guys, very awesome, could you guys do a discussion about ya'lls favorite EU stories like Legacy,Dark Empire,or even New Jedi Order,I Love those stories soo much.
hey guys, watch all your versus series videos, anyway wondering if u guys gonna keep going with the character profiles and why not do TARKIN! anyway keep up the good work .
How about you guys do a video commentary on all the Star Wars films -- starting from episodes 1 to 6? Now that would be wicked. You can even have the movie playing right in the middle of the screen while you comment and react to what's going on in the film.
I was not a huge fan of this book I liked it but did not love it the backstory was my favorite part of the whole book and everything with Vader and the emperor out of 5 stars I give it a 3
How... good looking, am I? I'm not asking if you're attracted to me I'm looking for an objective answer. I have noooo idea how I remind you of an attractive Australian but okay :) P.S: The correct objective answer is 4.5/10
Reti4 I don't know, you guys look similar and your accents are, too. (I know he's Australian and you're British but I can't tell the difference). You just remind me of Chase a lot, I can't explain it lol. IMHO you're probably a 6-7/10. But I go for very different types of guys, anyways.
Awesome stuff! I love this! Keep it up! Nothing about Palpatine's first name though.. :( I really wanna hear your guys' thoughts on it! Regardless, great stuff!
One thing left to say, TARKIN!
Tarkin for the win.
One
Yoda and windu vs Sidious and dooku vs series

another great episode. Really enjoy all of you guys, both seperately and togethor
I've never had the patience to watch an hour youtube video before but I've watched most of this and its really good.
Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Your welcome, I was looking for something to watch while preparing my english presentation about the book so it was really good.
Why do they not do this anymore ?
@@Reti4what happened ?
I really want a Dooku novel.
evannova95 clone
Well, 3 years later, we got it : Dooku Jedi Lost.
Love James Luceno's Star Wars books. I actually have Darth Plagueis in my collection.
Tarkin is only a background character in ROTS. In A New Hope, Tarkin's presence is almost as big a Palpatine's presence in Return of the Jedi.
I've watched every single video from Jensaraii, EvanNova and GreyJedi, however I am only now being introduced to you and Antoine. I welcome you and have subscribed. I am very fond of this inter-video friendship and love of Star Wars you share. I look forward to more

have to favorite this. You guys are awesome!

Hmmm... no comments yet... I'll just say what's on everybody's mind:
Tarkin!
LOL
Lmfao
awesome review, you guys made me very interested in this book
No higher praise than that. James Luceno deserves as many readers as possible.
Dat ending doe :-D
Lol
Didn't see the waving coming. Haha
I only saw it when editing the video and had to just had to end it on that. Antoine brings the podcast to life with those kind of shenanigans.
Reti4 Shenanigans are the best part of podcasts, aside from the depth of the conversation. Awesome work dude.

A good idea for something you can do is each read a section of a Star Wars book you enjoy and then discuss it
Great job u should continue and I know this isn't ur vs series channel but could u do like a dooku vs Sidious or do a collaboration for windu and yoda vs dooku and Sidious or vader which ever u see plausible but good job to all u guys and don't stop doing it
Best book of the new canon, but that is not saying much.
Hey, I liked Cloak of Deception, I found it fascinating
"The Versus Consul Podcast"
Possible Show title
guys it would be amazing if all of you could have a debate on New Jedi Order vs Old, and even if you're all of the same opinion it would be great to hear your reasons, or (and this may be more interesting because im fairly certain you all have differing views on it) what the best sith group is, just to put my vote in there, ONE SITH
You guys should do Rebel reviews and reviews on Characters
We're considering it, at least as a segment of the episodes if not the entire episodes themselves.
Do you have any plans to do the Star Wars Questionnaire, Reti?
Indeed, it's already written, it's just a case of when I record it (The most painful part of the creating process for me). I actually already made one, before Evan and Antoine, last year. It was the first video I ever did but it was terrible so I took it down after just a month. Rest assured this one will be of better quality, when it gets here.
Wasn't Plagueis always canon? He was referenced in Episode 3.
Yes, but only vaguely. The details of Plagueis the book were only re-canonized after Tarkin came out.

hey guys, watch all your versus series videos, anyway wondering if u guys gonna keep going with the character profiles and why not do TARKIN! anyway keep up the good work .
Hi, I'm glad you enjoy our videos. We are definitely going to keep going with the profiles it's just a case of when, they take a lot of work.
no worries keep up the good work
How about you guys do a video commentary on all the Star Wars films -- starting from episodes 1 to 6? Now that would be wicked. You can even have the movie playing right in the middle of the screen while you comment and react to what's going on in the film.
It's definitely one of our plans.
Indeed, we have spoken about it. We just need to decide how we're going to go about doing it.
That would be interesting. I'd love to hear their analysis of the films.

I hope we can, it's just a case of finding consistent segments to cover.
Reti, you reaaaallly remind me of Chase from House, M.D. Lol, just sayin'.
How... good looking, am I? I'm not asking if you're attracted to me I'm looking for an objective answer.
I have noooo idea how I remind you of an attractive Australian but okay :)
P.S: The correct objective answer is 4.5/10
Reti4 I don't know, you guys look similar and your accents are, too.
