Me & my Brother had one of my favourite memories in gaming playing Project Zomboid. We toiled for days, walling off a base, clearing and burning the bodies, then spent ages on the farming... all we had were cabbage seeds, so we grew a ton of cabbages. We barely survived till harvest time - and finally did it - we harvested our first crop of cabbages... we had found tons of flour, and a lot of yeast - we could bake bread! This was it! We had secured a food source and thought we might make it through the winter. We made cabbage sandwiches - patted ourselves on the back for "a job well done" - and took a bite.... then immediately both of our characters got the "depressed" moodlet. Turns out we hated cabbage sandwiches.

Worth mentioning is that while Thoreau lived in the woods to enjoy and experience nature, he lived within easy walking distance of Concord, MA, often going to town to visit those he knew, as well as entertaining guests - simple and deliberate living, rather than isolation. I met Japanese and Indian dudes playing this. The Japanese didn't speak English, the Indian had a thick accent and nobody understood my aussie accent. We somehow managed to go a real long way. Great times... I still play with the Indian dude from time to time. The Japanese guy got married and doesn't have time to play games anymore
I made a Motte and Bailey out of the entirety of the riverside self storage place. The two center units I connected by the roof with flooring, then built up from there. 4 stories on top of the units. Log walled outside of the metal fence and connected by flooring, then the fencing to act as parapets. It was most glorious. The only thing lacking is the ability to make torches. The main floor was a sort of great hall, a feast hall, a hearth hall. It was part of a small community challenge of a base build, I did not finish my build, just the exterior. Filling it out with rooms and then filling those rooms with decorations was more than I had patience for.
@@mirjanbouma The game is really detailed in many of its life simulations and such with fat and calorie requirements in game and zombie movements. There are horde events that zombies will walk across the map to find so its entriely possible for a city to be overrun at one point and be practically empty after a bit because the zombies left, then be swamped again because they came back or were passing through. I know your comment was months ago so if you havent already tried out the game you should soon

Just one question - how is the fort, or even just the higher level itself, proof against zombies? Couldn't they just walk along the pier and then climb the stairs? If anyone could illuminate me I'd be very grateful - cheers
The idea of an god going from person to person just observing, is such a potent thought. I didn't think I would find in a project zomboid video. Thanks AA Edit: correction

New challenge suggestion. Try to survive on studio challenge map by managing to build a self sufficient farm with any sort of water collector on the top of any studio building and be able to harvest any sort of crops (cabbage or carrots or tomatoes or anything) for at least once. It is much more difficult then you would think. Things to know about the studio challenge map: - It is a custom isolated map in an overrun Hollywood studio, where you start out in your small container house - Food is not hard to find as there is a supermarket nearby, but getting there is a problem as the entire studio is overrun by a large amount of zombies - This challenge map encourages nocturnal night time gameplay as zombies become faster running zombies with better sight, hearing and smelling when it's daytime as soon as it turns 09:00 AM, but they are slow and normal zombies when it's dark from 08:00 PM - It is totally possible to find equipment tools and items for foraging and farming, also vegetable seeds in the nearby storage areas/hangars with large boxes - There are many houses around there are even vehicles spawning randomly, with a bit of luck you may be able to get even a working vehicle
The way he talked I kept thinking he was about to pull a very straight faced dry joke, but it was just genuine David Attenborough mixed with soul searching. Very nice. I too like to find the meta, the micro habitat that game systems make by accident. Like fishing giving you clothes.
Actually, I remember my high school English teacher told me Henry David Thoreau didn't actually spend all his time in the woods, he would regularly go into town to get drunk at the tavern, or have his mom do his laundry for him. I had also been romanticizing the wilderness a lot and that knowledge just sort of killed it.
It feels like you changed up the narrations just a little, what ever it is, I REALLY like it, it's...really relaxing, and it feels smoother, consistant, not as many sudden cuts. it makes for a video that's really easy to enjoy and engross one's self in. I VERY much look forward to more episodes of this series.

I did the nomad style every time. Don't even build a base. But i always take with me: 1xSaw and 1-2xPots. Also, try to find a big bag. Foraging + Fishing skill are your most important. Basically, u have a Forage -> Drink/Eat -> Forage -> Drink/Eat loop. You don't even need fishing. Stockpile the food that doesn't rot for the winter like as squirrel and u fine. I usually grind foraging as fast as possible. Fishing in Winter because if you can't forage u fish out of boredom ^,^. I actually find it the easy way to survive. Almost no Zeds to fear and there are no other threads (until we get NPC/Wildlife in 2045).

The appeal of total self sufficiency is strong, hence the prevalence of books like hatchet and my side of the mountain

God damn that's detailed wtf is this game?
This game is
i m m a c u l a t e
I don't like zombie stuff but the survival elements in this game seem top notch
@@mirjanbouma i think in the sandbox mode you can set there to be no zombies
@@user-ARCON_GRID thank you!
You playing this game was probably more of a legit nature retreat than Thoreau in Walden tho. Let's be real, man had his mom bringing him food and laundry
P.S. I love the gymnopedie in this
AA has given some real good to the world. Years later, I come back to these Zomboid videos the most. There’s a certain unknowable beauty to the quiet solitude of living off your own efforts alone.
Am I imagining things or is AA's community really cool and not toxic like so many other channels, especially Twitch ones.
Gonna be honest, I've never heard of you or this game, yet this popped up in my recommended. This game genuinely looks pretty fun and I really like how this video is formatted
Same for me, I got project Zomboid just because of this video and don't have a single regret.
1:25 lol Yuri is still learning netcode; give it another year, maybe two if their hard drives get stolen again
respect to the soundtrack, your easy listening, organizational skills, and detailed bibliography of the reflections you chose to represent yourself through a piece of software that inspires.
Whoa you can't just take off into the video without greeting everyone first. I haven't even settled in.
It's really weird of how calm he is in the beginning of the video, and I actually like it. Very calm and chill, soothing too
God, I love your Zomboid content. It always makes me want to come back to the game, and quite frankly knowing that there's mods available and proper multiplayer on the way only furthers that want.
The ability you have to just make people feel good with your commentary is truly outstanding. Then with other games its just entertaining in different ways, truly you are a master.
This video had such a peaceful energy.
I don’t watch half of your videos, I just listen. You have a wonderful voice and way of speaking. So soothing.
I'm surprised you didn't wait for Build 42 to do something like this. That's when animals NPCs are going to be added(bears, deer, rabbits, etc).
I'll be saving that for later ;)
When build 42 is released, AA will have 75M followers and will be far too big for yeoman tasks such as those, plebeian.
unfortunately plans have changed, build 42 will not have wilderness but player npc.
@@reeceshugrue6167 yes yes build 42 is the start of npc, they already have pretty much everything ready . :) maybe along the way they will introduce animals but it will be in a long time, probably build 45 or more.
This is what I love to see in games...emergent gameplay. Where you figure out a completely different way to play the game than the developers presumably intended.
I always look forward to your videos! Whether they are about "legitimate" organ donations in Rimworld or you running the most insane yet effective means of surviving the Zombie apocalypse. Keep up the good work, I know a lot of people also look forward to them!
P.S please leave my organs alone.
I've really enjoyed your more overtly ironic performative monologues, but this more natural and sincere style feels very comfortable. I'm making a wild leap and assuming it means you're more comfortable, which makes me happy.
By chance today I stumbled upon what is probably my new favorite UA-cam channel. Super fun content commentary and a really nice personality!
I really enjoyed this vid, and his other ones on Zomboid like Zero to Hero. I like his dry sense of humour.
Thanks AA
Edit: correction
Ayyyyy
That isn't omnipotence if he has to go to one person at a time
@@typerez8132 ok and?

He survived in nature without even making fire. This is madness!. Damn dude, that ending.
Hell yeah you can! I can’t wait, this is going to be so cool!
I love that Amphibian uses Erik Satie as background music.
Wow, Project Zomboid is really picking itself back up. I remember when you swung spears like pool sticks.
Came for a forest survival disaster and left with a floating wooden fortress in a lake!
Yes was waiting for something like this in a long time.
Happy to see you do it
I like how this man talks about gaming like one speaks aboit art and other hobbies... Not just something kids do, or a given, but something that teaches creativity and so on...
"a fish so juicy sweeeeeeet~"
I'm going to do the now harder CDDA challenge this way.
This channel is a gem I never knew existed
Can't wait for multiplayer to finally come back. Missed playing with my sister.
i love your lil speeches
the contrast between silly amphibian and genuine insight + reflection is very good and strong
You invite the Spiffing Brit over to play. You made him cry and you are a mean man.
Spiffing Brit is fucking annoying.
So I’ve started to play multiplayer with a friend in a one on one server. And it become apparent how even a minute amount of more experience in the game can drastically increase your survival experience. So thank you for teaching me some of the little mechanics to help me survive all the much longer
when ever this guy talks i feel like his talking down to me smiling while he caress me
you forgot no homo
@@peterhoffmann2231no i didn't
At times when I watch him at night his calming voice sometimes puts me to sleep, great voice if there were an audiobook from you I am sure it would sell well.
Another soul sustaining dose of zen. Thank you.
I don't like zombie games but I love the poetic commentary this guy puts out.
The irony is that Thoreau was never actually self sufficient, his mom did all of his laundry.
He didn’t even make his own house, he bought all of the materials from a general store
Couldn’t relate to the commentary more this time, that is what everyone’s true view of freedom should be, best lad on UA-cam hands down
Aaah... survival sims. The Thinking Man's genre.
Thanks for another chill installment of one of my faves. :v
I thought this was going to be one of the older videos from zomboid until I looked at the date, now I am awaiting more. There's something special about watchings the vids of just a guy trying to survive in a zombie apocalypse with all sorts of wacky stuff going on
"Since we are nearing PZ's multiplayer..." That aged like milk.
I still remember waiting 7 years for NPCs. Nobody even mentions NPCs anymore.
@@digitalwayfarer7404 NPCs didn't really work in old PZ anyway. At least there's a mod for it.
I mean, sure aged like milk but now its butter am i right?

New challenge suggestion.
Try to survive on studio challenge map by managing to build a self sufficient farm with any sort of water collector on the top of any studio building and be able to harvest any sort of crops (cabbage or carrots or tomatoes or anything) for at least once. It is much more difficult then you would think.
Things to know about the studio challenge map:
- It is a custom isolated map in an overrun Hollywood studio, where you start out in your small container house
- Food is not hard to find as there is a supermarket nearby, but getting there is a problem as the entire studio is overrun by a large amount of zombies
- This challenge map encourages nocturnal night time gameplay as zombies become faster running zombies with better sight, hearing and smelling when it's daytime as soon as it turns 09:00 AM, but they are slow and normal zombies when it's dark from 08:00 PM
- It is totally possible to find equipment tools and items for foraging and farming, also vegetable seeds in the nearby storage areas/hangars with large boxes
- There are many houses around there are even vehicles spawning randomly, with a bit of luck you may be able to get even a working vehicle
I shudder at the amount of log hauling that would have taken.
we either start as gerald or become gerald, this one started as gerald.
Loving it mang. This week has been fucking fuckitty fick fuck for me mang. Got fired, had to put down 3 horses... I'm really glad you're uploading and flexing your creative editing skills. never forget that while you may think what you do is a hobby, or a career... for a lot of us fans, it really makes the difference. Don't let the world get to you mang. Thanks for being you, and sharing your virtual adventures with us mang *raises glass*.
I got totally messed up this week, too, Jack. I feel your pain - my condolences, sir :) It will get better
@@ambiguousamphibian Thank you... it will get better Indeed. You;'ve got this too man! As Epictetus said: “Some things are within our power, while others are not. Within our power are opinion, motivation, desire, aversion, and, in a word, whatever is of our own doing; not within our power are our body, our property, reputation, office, and, in a word, whatever is not of our own doing.” we've GOT this.
At 28 I felt that statement about intrinsical exploration. Brought a tear to my eye thinking about Legend of Zelda on NES
Hey AA can you do another 1000 person colony vid? You can force a raid with the debug menu. I would love to see all of those dudes fight
Might return to it or something like it at some point - unfortunately it's a bit of a slideshow, but I think something of a similar scope and nature would be absolutely welcome :)
@@ambiguousamphibian Ok thanks love ur content btw
I love catching the AA Project: Zomboid videos. I cannot wait for it to inevitably turn philosophical.
Don't you hate it when you're trying to survive in a forest and accidentally build a floating wooden fortress? xD
So YOU'RE the guy that builds the staircases in the middle of the woods
Hello? Your videos are so relaxing to watch. I'm not going anywhere with this. I just wanted to let you know I appreciate the effort you put in.
Loved this idea. Funny ending though, essentially the equivalent of "I did a little mining off camera." Can't blame him though. Would take forever.
ah yes, the ooga booga playstyle.
Bushman Uga - strongest man that i will never forget
"died because he tripped off of a roof when running out of his woods to scavenge for foods."
the ballad of Flint Axe is all that is left
loved hearing you talk about us Wilderness players on your former server. Was watching your more recent videos and was thinking back to my game time on there today. Great times. Had a lot of fun foraging and roughing it!
Ok, I am gone doing a forest build now, see you in two weeks. XD
I feel like making bowls is the one you thing you do when stuck in the wild. Just carving bowl after bowl. A treasure trove of bowls measuring higher than Olympus. An ocean...of bowls.
I thought project zomboid was abandoned. Is it still being updated?
of course! still to this day, and it gains alot in popularity :)
I have an idea for a challenge for you: how long can you survive in a gas station?
the challenge is that you can't get any other supplies from anywhere else but the gas station and cars nearby, and the things you start with, and that's it
How big is a cell????
Look it up
I did the nomad style every time. Don't even build a base.
But i always take with me: 1xSaw and 1-2xPots.
Also, try to find a big bag.
Foraging + Fishing skill are your most important.
Basically, u have a Forage -> Drink/Eat -> Forage -> Drink/Eat loop.
