WHY JOHN BONHAM WAS SUCH A GREAT DRUMMER

  • All too many people (drummers, musicians, general music fans) are unfortunately dissuaded from truly appreciating the immense musicianship that the late drummer John Bonham from the band Led Zeppelin possessed.
I implore you to watch this video in it's entirety and to have the patience to follow my advice that in which I deliver. * At least 88.67% of you will first be very pleasantly surprised, then excitedly and ravenously curious in perusing his work.. And ultimately be very happy as a better-rounded lover of music.
The song I refer to in the video can be found here for quick and easy listening: • The Rain Song (Remaster)

One of my favorite things about Bonham's playing is the sheer number of songs that are recognizable just from the drums. I'm not just talking recognizable by drummers or other musicians, but by the general public. People hear "When the Levee Breaks", "Rock and Roll", "The Crunge", "Moby Dick", etc and they immediately know the song. I can't think of any other drummer where even the casual fan can pick out the song just from the drum part.

I like Bonham too but: I put on Stanley Clarke's album "If this bass could only talk" for a classical musician friend who didn't really even know pop music. Less than two measures in she lit up: "oh, is this Sting!??!" Er no, but it's Copeland on that track. I'll agree that Bonham is recognizable to people who know the songs, but Copeland is recognizable to people hearing a song for the first time. (And Fool in the Rain should probably be top on your list there!)

A lot of drummers hold back on albums. You have to see them live to see them unleashed. Steve Smith comes to mind. Listen to Journey and it's like OK. See them live in the day and Smith is impressive. Bonham had a sense of syncopation and dynamics that you really didn't hear until he came along. He had a unique voice if you will and he went way before his time. I can only imagine he would have improved with age, as unique and talented as he was. We see that progression in someone like Neil Peart. I wonder if Bonham ever studied with a teacher as an adult? Freddie Gruber and Peter Erskine come to mind as teachers of professional drummers. Dom Famularo too. Even the best want to get to the next level.

I was 18 when first properly introduced to Zep. I simply didn't get it, I found it noisy and too intense. One night I put on headphones and tried the first album one final time - and suddenly while listening to You Shook Me I finally got it. Something clicked in my brain and I understood. I've never looked back since. Nothing equals Zep for me.

Bohham is the only rock drummer that I ever really, really took notice off. Ultimately, a lot of great guys showed up on the scene, but Bonham's feel, groove, musical sense, behind the beat, triplet- eight note juxtaposition, monster bass drum, phat snare drum mastery was so ahead of it's time, and so immediately recognizable and so crucial/integral to the sound of the band that I just locked onto it. Eyes would glaze over and......"Must have Zepplin, must have Zepplin, must have Zepplin. Take me to the bowler hat wearing master of percussion.

When we're young, we gravitate towards what's popular. I found an eye opener was spending a whole day or more going through Drummer World. I really changed my mind about what makes a great drummer after that. I love groovers now. Rick Marotta, David Garibaldi, Bernard Purdie, Jeff Porcaro, Dennis Chambers. . There are a bunch of others. Even someone like Mike Portnoy could learn from them. Sometimes it's easy to OD on massive chops That we miss people that play what fits best and are really tight.

Number 1 - John Bonham: On the very first cut of the very first Led Zeppelin LP, John Bonham changed rock drumming forever. Years later, Jimmy Page was still amused by the disorienting impact that "Good Times Bad Times," with its jaw-dropping bass-drum hiccups, had on listeners: "Everyone was laying bets that Bonzo was using two bass drums, but he only had one." Heavy, lively, virtuosic and deliberate, that performance laid out the terrain Bonham's artful clobbering would conquer before his untimely death in 1980. At his most brutally paleolithic he never bludgeoned dully, at his most rhythmically dumbfounding he never stooped to unnecessary wankery, and every night on tour he dodged both pitfalls with his glorious stampede through "Moby Dick." "I spent years in my bedroom - literally fucking years - listening to Bonham's drums and trying to emulate his swing or his behind-the-beat swagger or his speed or power," Dave Grohl once wrote in Rolling Stone, "not just memorizing what he did on those albums but getting myself into a place where I would have the same instinctual direction as he had." This was a course that nearly every post-Bonham rock drummer would follow at one time or another, a quest that allowed the greatest to eventually find their own grooves.

I went through a led zeppelin phase for a while as a young drummer, although I don't count zeppelin among my favorite bands at this point. Like others, I came and stayed for Bonham (perhaps unlike others, I really don't like Plant's voice very much at all). But what has really stayed with me from Bonham's drumming and changed my approach at the time was the activity in the bass drum. His bass drum was almost louder and more important than his snare. When I think of how I've stained to hear the bass drum pattern in the songs of so many of zep's and bonham's contemporaries, it really is a striking difference.

For me, personally, the thing that made Bonzo great was his presence of mind in combining beats, or parts of different beats, in such a way, so that it modifies the beat he's playing, so that it works for the song, or that part of the song at least.
Case in point, I think it was Dazed and Confused. There's a quiet section towards the middle of the song and he's playing a standard blues backbeat. You know, the "BoomBoom - BoomBap" thing. ok?...ok.
When I was learning that song, I always played a straight 8th note on the hats. Seemed to make sense. Everyone else was doing it! (I was like, 19 at the time, what did I know?!).
One day, while playing through the album, I noticed that I could hear that he was doing something different, through the headphones.
The hat rhythm wasn't matching up.
So I stopped and listened closely....he was playing a Jazz triplet beat on the hats in that section...and making it work!
I really solved a little bug that had been nagging me, in that what I was playing wasn't fitting into the music, 100%. Once I changed to the dotted 8th note, it was like Bob's yer uncle. It all fit so nicely!
I've noticed him return to this philosophy over and over again, through his career.
A real stroke of genius and something that helped set him apart from other drummers of the era, since no one else was doing that then. Listen to some other band from those days. No one else was doing that.
    Check it out.

I always thought that album and specifically those 2 songs immediately set Zeppelin apart from the other rock bands of the era. It showed their versatility. It sounded like nothing that came before it. That album probably influenced the ' alternative ' movement of the 1990s more than any other album. The first few albums were mostly blues based and of course Led Zeppelin 3 had some elements of folk music , but HoH was something entirely original and different. It was a new brand of rock music. It was so different that it confused critics and fans at first . But today it's regarded as a breakthrough rock album that eventually influenced an entirely different bunch of musicians than the first 4 albums.

100%. Also the song I've always considered the "companion piece" with Rain Song, No Quarter. I honestly think Houses album is where he came into his own not as a drummer, but as a musician. In four years he went from "if I can, I will" (Good Times, Bad Times) to "how do I make this song the best it can be." For all his crazy power and technique, what amazes me most is that this 24-yo roughneck bumpkin had such incredible sensitivity. Even after hundreds and hundreds of passes, I still learn something with each new listen.

Terry that's a great choice to show bottom softer more orchestral side he uses brushes in that number which is lost on most people unless you understand what brushwork is and also you should let people know about The Song Remains the Same live version he really creates so much drama in the backdrop that I think that's just as good as to studio version if not better in some ways he puts it all together there at the peak of the songs freshness it is awesome and I'm so glad you use that as an example which probably floored a lot of the more visceral bottom fans...lol Peace, Paiste Bob

He gets the attention of the director and the camera focuses on him during his over-the-head triplets and almost looks like "drummer at the wrong gig." And I mean that in a GOOD way! You are so right. Bonham had a style like no other. I describe Bonham's style as a bull in a tutu. With as much brawn his style had it was equated with finesse grace.

Bonham, the best rock drummer ever, period. Here’s just one reason why - NO ONE, including his son (although Jason is a very good drummer in his own rite) could replace him. That’s how unique he was. No one else sounded like him, not even close. He had all the chops but he played them like no other. I grew up listening to Ginger Baker too - another original, great creative drummer BUT he didn’t play for the greatest rock band of all time and you could find other drummers who could, at least, copy his style. Bonham, rest his soul, would have also evolved over time and who knows what we all would have been treated to musically. There’s Bonham and then there’s everyone else.

John Bonham was the best drummer in Led Zeppelin at that time. He played well and did his job, when he wasn't sloshed. The greatest thing that John Bonham did was pass the torch in the historical/drumming lineage sense. It's 2018 and our vast drumming vocabulary has gone beyond what he did all those many moons ago. There are drummers out there who are now far better rhythmically and musically than he was. An important link in the chain, yes. The greatest drummer who ever lived and will never exist again? Of course not. No such beast has ever existed.

Anyone who thinks JHB isn’t worth listening too, is purposefully ignorant. Stupidity may be defined as purposeful ignorance....ignorance can be fixed...but stupidity is forever. It’s all about the feel and ability too communicate emotion. Wicked fast chops don’t do that as well...the only thing communicated is the drummer saying “look how good I am”. Bonham was about swing with gobs and gobs of power....perfect time is not relevant in and of itself, we don’t look at paintings and say certain paint strokes look rushed, it’s about expression, communication, and GROOVE baby. JHB was,in his time, “unboxable” he did it differently than it was being done...he blazed a trail for all of us to follow while simultaneously respecting those who came before him. Bonham is consistently referred to as in the top 3 rock drummers of all time...when the voters are drummers. You don’t have to be a fan to recognize the talent and musicianship. I love it when people tell me they think he is over rated.....
