    Awesome video, Matt! I've always had a hard time with those ghost notes, but I think your video helped clear it all up!

      Hey glad it could help. I just watched this video again and realized I made a mistake. At 6:36 I am actually playing the groove in 4/4 not 9/8. I am omitting the 3rd 8th note. Oppps!

    been playing for 40 years, can read music and still do not know how to count this damn beat. i just do not feel the 9/8. love you Bonham and damn you!! this reminds me of the purdie shuffle, aka porcaro and bonham too. love the things i cannot figure out, yet.....

      Can you play a measure of 4/4 and add one hi-hat to the ending?
      Think | 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 | | 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 |
      This can be a good starting point.

    Have you thought about the idea the 1 is really the two kick drums. “1 e”
    The bass and guitar both play pickups to 1 as “e and a 1e”
    When you hear the vocal come in. The way I’m hearing it, that puts the vocal entrance on 1.

      I guess I never did. But now that I listen to it again with that idea in mind it makes total sense. Oh man I've led so many astray!

    You know it’s amazing we have tools like UA-cam to learn stuff as musicians the possibilities are endless now. I have played guitar and piano for 20 years and just started drumming about five years ago. I think it all depends on the passion and how much do you really want to be great.

    This is a great explanation! I never would've thought to learn this in 4 first, but it helped a lot! I don't mean to criticize, but are you playing a snare hit on beat 3 at 6:30? Just attempting to play along with you, and can't tell if I'm miscounting or not. Anyway, thanks for the video!

      Hey Jeff, glad this helped you out. If you look at one of the older comments you will see that I have an error in the video. at 6:36 I am actually playing the groove in 4/4 not 9/8. I am omitting the 3rd 8th note from the pattern. This is totally an editing an issue on my part. Thanks for asking about it though.

      Great Joe I'm glad I could help. Check out Jim Rileys idea above about hearing the two kicks as "1e" to start the groove. It kinda makes more sense that way.

    thank you for posting this. Your breakdown of this beat is one of the best I have seen. been meaning to comment for awhile. My goal is to nail this and and the Stanton Moore beat by years end. I appreciate your teaching style and the way you break down parts into easier bite size bits so that they are not so overwhelming.
