For a right handed drummer, Buddy's "weak" hand moves faster than anything I've ever seen. I've been playing the drums for 20+ years and could never even deign to achieve a fraction of the greatness that was Buddy Rich. 🤘🏻 One of the all time greats to ever grace the throne.
I would say that his snare speed (one-hand rolls) has been surpassed (or at least matched) by many modern drummers. However, no one had that speed until much later. I believe Jojo Mayer was one of the first to begin to even understand how Buddy got that speed, or at least teach it. There's a handful of heavy metal drummers who's got control beyond belief these days. Alot of them are using triggers, and very few of them groove the way Buddy did.
The greatest hands of any drummer I've ever seen! Just his left hand alone is beyond all belief. And when he would play with Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show Orchestra it was pure magic. Buddy and Ed Shaughnessy always had a great mutual respect for each other.
Probably the only video I’ve seen in which my smile is unchanged for the entire duration . The feeling of his pushing so hard no matter what and still making time to have a laugh because , why not ? The red sweater one , evoked misty eyes and laughs when he finished . It’s something so hard to put into words … but when you feel it , you know . This is like witnessing an alchemy… someone playing with dynamite like it’s no big deal and respecting it at the same time . Willing to go to the edge and jump off for us . God bless this gd wonder of the world
No one ever been as great as this guy. His clarity, consistency, phrasing is unmatched. And he hits, drummers gotta hit. And that it comes through on these recordings that are one notch better than stone tablets, and a type of music that is not on heavy rotation for me, its just awe inspiring. Whatever your list, top 5, top 10, or best ever, he has to be on that list.
I am into metal and prog for decades and I have never seen a drummer as good as Buddy. Buddy says “hold my beer” to the most technically advanced death and prog metal drummers.
Everything and every skill reaches a peak of what is possible and the maximum abilities of the human being. Buddy Rich is in my opinion the the epitome of just that.
dude was a showman; cameras and crowd are there he is an entertainer first and foremost! now, on the bus when he doesn't know a band mate is recording.... well. he's a perfectionist.
The man is in absolute unity with his instrument and the universe there is ∅ between his moment and the note he is playing it is demonstrable perfection 🎶
Bonham is my Fav Rock drummer. If you wanna learn some Bonham drum licks, watch Buddy Rich. He made it look easy and kicked your butt at the same time with the Carson band who were all " unknown " musicians that were monsters unto themselves. Braaavo!! In the days when you had to be able to PLAY to make it.
Most people don't realize that Buddy Rich was either the favorite drummer or the 2nd favorite drummer, in Keith Moon's case (Gene Krupa)....John Bonham, Ginger Baker, Neil Peart, etc. Loved Buddy...
I remember seeing this live. As a drummer in a garage band, I discovered Buddy Rich by watching Johnny Carson. Johnny was a good friend and helped Buddy revive his career when the public was losing interest in jazz. I loved the Tonight Show band and I anxiously awaited the shows with Buddy. This was long before the days of the VCR. Since then, I learned to play jazz and moonlighted for over 50 years. While I respect Buddy's ability, he is not my favorite drummer. In the rock genre, I think Jon "Bonzo" Bonham was the best. In the crossover rock/jazz, I prefer Danny Seraphine. My overall favorite drummer in jazz - and I have many - is Joe Morello.
Thanks for posting. Dad brought home Swingin New Big Band in the 60's. West Side Story. Awesome. The WSS on the Tonight Show, soon after the album release showed they still had that chart down pat. Again, awesome.
Most modern rock drummers couldn't even remotely keep up with Buddy Rich and they are 1/3 his age, and dressed in a t-shirt. He drums circles around them in his 60s, wearing a 3-piece suit and a tie, and barely breaks a sweat...
Perhaps...I'm a HORRIBLE lip reader myself, and I would not be surprised if he couldn't hear as those sound stages often have terrible acoustics. Sound stages are built to keep noise from outside out...not for acoustics. In this situation I think there was an equal chance that he was complimenting Conte Candoli on a great trumpet solo.
An afternoon show, brought 99% of the Drummers in North East Ohio all across the back of the small hall "too cool". Ringside for Pop and myself. Amazing, after big conference of the local drum world. Drum tech struck all the brass, saw Me being nosey, "Wanna sit?" On the Throne of thrones? The energy was palpable, look up to see all back wall jaws on the floor, no sticks only a Speed King. The Juliard grad tech smiled "Do it" rah ta BOOM! On the Kick Drum, you'd sworn I shot the back row
Starting at 13:50. Beyond belief what a human can do musically. Much like Roy Clark with a guitar on Malaguene on the Odd Couple. Hands moving so fast they are a complete blur.
7 Decades of the most furious unbridled playing ever recorded. Never once did his wig fall off. Kudos.
Always a must see on Johnny Carson. Looking back I didn’t realize how good we had it. My fav drummer of all time.
Nice to hear Buddy playing in a trio with brushes. Very rare. At that tempo you really get a sense of his ability to swing.
Well said! @@farshimelt

There will NEVER be another Drummer like MR Rich ever again
Lots of great drummers in the last hundred years, but no one had the speed on the snare like Buddy! A true legend!
Couldn't agree more!
yes, .some are faster with their feet these days. You may want to rethink that all.

@@morbidmanmusicon a snare?
@morbidmanmusic if it weren't for buddy rich there would be no drummers today playing that fast with their feet.
"Excuse me while I do more on my high hat than you will do on your entire kit in 76 lifetimes" - Buddy Rich
The greatest hands of any drummer I've ever seen! Just his left hand alone is beyond all belief. And when he would play with Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show Orchestra it was pure magic. Buddy and Ed Shaughnessy always had a great mutual respect for each other.
I saw both Buddy and Eddie perform separately. Met them both. What a thrill

When it comes to rock drummers there is no one as close to Rich as Carl Palmer.
@@karnevil9959Carl Palmer is Buddy Rich on steroids😮
Buddy Rich, Neil Peart, John Bonham legends that will always live on
Add Taylor Hawkins to that list now 😢
Add Gene Krupa and Joe Morello !
Closest thing to Rich as rock drummers go is Carl Palmer and Rich himself was a fan....
Hal Blaine
Louie Bellson, Ronnie Tutt, Dino Danelli, Keith Moon & Cozy Powell.
Most drummers would prefer/need to remove their suit jacket to feel less restricted while playing. Buddy wasn’t most drummers. Absolutely amazing!
always is stupendous~!~!~!~! BUDDY RICH the true MASTER of the Drum set~!
Wow, I can't believe how fast and easy buddy rich rocked
Everything and every skill reaches a peak of what is possible and the maximum abilities of the human being. Buddy Rich is in my opinion the the epitome of just that.
Buddy in an uncommonly good mood.

Buddy was a G .. Karen Carpenter another 🥁 legend of her time ~ for the ladies 🙏🏼
And Buddy influenced Neil Peart quite a bit too.
The GOAT. There are none better who ever lived.
Indeed!
depends on what you're asking on the drummer.
I love the way his snare sounds
Yeah, that is a great sound he gets out of the drum!
Its almost like a deathcore snare with that ring and snap. ❤
The world may never see or hear a talent like Buddy Rich. But we can say that he called down the thunder and crushed it.
One of the best drummers in the world
Wearing a 3-piece suit and a cheap toupet but still is capable of doing all these awesome licks. He was one of a kind.
How many people tried to brush your fu*** hair, I wonder ?!???!? Also, how many times???
OMG...... Buddy is the KING

Love how he didn't mind sharing the spotlight. 👍🏻🤘🏻
I'm no jazz fan but that sax solo at 6:18 is phenomenal.
Fantastically frenetic!
Ikr? I really need to know what that song is.
Piece was called “Nutville”. Lew Tabackan solo on sax.
@@scrimblo322the song at 6:18 is called "Nutville". It's not on Spotify or Apple music atm to my knowledge
And he's wearing a formal suit, while doing all those crazy fills!!!!😮😮😮😮😮
And a toupe' !
and no stretch back then... in suits or toupe's!
Buddy Rich the human Gatling gun of drummers.

Believe it or not, Joe used to play drums for Woody Allen’s Dixieland band. I saw him with that band in a club in NYC in 1975.
I'm stunned. I had no idea...

I like the trombone solo at 8:04.

Best copulation ever of the worlds best drummer
God bless, one hell of another drummer Johnny Carson.
Awesome video...keep up the great work!!
Thanks so much!
He will always be the best, so sad he died in 1987
All hail the all time master. Buddy Rich!
You’d never know looking at him you’d think he’s a used car salesman that he was this talented !!
Looks can be deceiving ;)
All of them are Amazing.
Thunderstorm ! Amazing drummer .
Pre-rock and roll stuff. He could have played in any rock n'roll band if he was younger! Around when they were.
Now that’s a Drummer!!!!
Thanks!
Thank you for watching...I appreciate it!
Not only does he have incradible FLAIR for the drums but he's a Character also! Buddy has great personality!
In the second clip, it shows how much he loved doing it.
I just had a flashback when he played Caravan my first band teacher made us watch this in percussion class
He was way ahead of his time , and wearing a 3 piece suit with a tie !!
That second song was fire
Blazing speed and power!
Amazing !!
I giggle when this guy sticks. So amazing
Look what can happen if your parents don't squelch your practice time. Isn't that right DAD.
Bruh the sax solo at 6:35 is OFF THE HOOK
Yes it is especially playing that baritone sax. Bad ass playing!
Flawlessness ....... in a three piece suit 🎉

What a monster. Oh my god. That left hand.
Best ever by far!!!
Big Master 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The original professor!!
Objectively the greatest
Thank you for posting! :)
You're welcome! Thanks for the kind comment!!
Was the greatest TV show ever!
Incredible
Buddy Rich could never understand why his band was never as appreciated as the rock bands of the sixties and seventies
13:37 to 14:10 impossible to play for every human drummer 😑 14:00 to 14:10 awesome
Eso sera para ti, y para mi (por supuesto), pero hoy en dia hay baterias en videos que hay en UA-cam, que hacen eso y mucho mas.
God of gods of DRUMMERS
He's the one of one for all times!
Virtuoso right there
Louie Bellson Art Blakey and Gene Krupa right there w him
He did that all with a traditional grip too
Johnny Carson had the best musicians.
A showman!!
Fantastic, thank you
You're welcome...thank you for watching!

LEGEND !!!
Buddy was my favorite student when I was giving drum lessons 🤣🤣hee! hee! heee.
He was indeed the drumming king until El Estepario Siberiano was born. Buddy will always have the best left hand ever.
The sax player is bad ass
One ugly SOB but the greatest drummer ever. A true legend. 💪
*in the thumbnail he looks like Richard Pryor!*
Ha ha!
fricken incredible musicians along with that drummer guy. lol wow
Phenomenal
Buddy a great drummer, Carson can rock it too. Love Jack Benny letting Carson display his talent.
Simplesmente o melhor dos melhores ☝️
in the 60s kids listened to the beatles, this is what MEN listened to in the 60s
Monstro 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Buddy Rich #1 .
There is no #2
or #3
#4 I don't care.
His hands and feet have HAD to be motorized. He was a cyborg. Had to be. No way a flesh and blood can play like that. lol
He was incredible! Thanks for watching!
What a legend
One of a kind, studied his rudiments book.
MASTER @ WORK
He makes it look so damn easy
Wish I could do this
Was this during the crack epidemic??? Cuz he's smokin!
