Anyone who thinks John Bonham is even in the same league as Ginger Baker doesn't know what they are talking about. I've been playing the drums for 32 years and I was classically trained which I later found to be a hindrance as a classically trained musician is programmed against improvisation and improvisation is something that Ginger and Bonham had in bucket loads. But Ginger wasn't just a skillful drummer; Ginger understood 'Time' and I mean he properly understood it. Listen to the time signatures of many cream records, then think about how they would have sounded if they were played in standard 4:4 time which is how Jack Bruce wrote them, it was Gingers knowledge of time which resulted in the huge heavy sound that cream was famous for. Ginger was a Jazz musician who understands musical arrangements and Bonham was just an amazing drummer. Bakers knowledge of time is what sets them apart.
