One thing I love about this movie is it shows other people being heroes. The curly-haired computer guy. All those nameless Shield agents who died trying to help Cap. Even the bureaucrat who draws the line in the sand - "not if it was your switch." You don't have to have powers, just the will to do the right thing.

One of Steve’s superpowers is inspiring people to be their best selves.
100% That moment is part of what makes this one great. It takes seriously institutions and the people in them. The tension there was so palpable. Most of the tension to this point had been fast-paced, but this slowed everything down, the way Rumlow quietly continued giving the orders, staring him down. The room was quiet, only thing you could hear was the man's fearful breathing & stuttering. So good.
“Before we get started, does anyone want to get out?” That’s the most gangster shit!!
And shows Cap's honor . He gives them a chance to leave peacefully even though he knows it won't work.
Every time I see that scene, I get a chuckle at Gui taking a nap in the corner.

I want to make a point about this movie that I think is unnoticed a lot of times. Captain America was a regular soldier in WW2. He took orders. He trusted authority. In Avengers, the first disillusionment happens when he realizes SHIELD has been using the alien technology without telling anyone. Here in Winter Soldier he comes face to face with the realization that authority can't be trusted. This isn't the 40s anymore, and you can't just blindly take orders. I love seeing this shift in his perspective, and a continuing motif. I thought it would be cool for you to notice now and watch how it evolves. LOVE hanging with you Alex!

Alex, I think you forget that Steve literally saw his friend, who always had his back and supported him, die. When he returned as The Winter Soilder, all he saw was his friend who he thought died. Not only is Steve not the only one from 1945 anymore, his best friend is back. And if he realized that Bucky was brainwashed, remember that Clint/Hawkeye was also brainwashed but came back as well. Wouldn't you be fighting for your friend back as well? Especially when you have someone else going through the same thing. Although Bucky was frozen and unfrozen during missions.
Not to mention the massive guilt trip attached. He always blamed himself for not being able to reach him in time and then finding out that he didn't just die but was captured, tortured and imprisoned is ROUGH. Like Bucky always pulled his ass out the fire, Steve got a whole new body and couldn't save the one person who was always saving him. It's horrible

@@megmur1766 To me Bucky is an incredibly tragic character. He suffered 70 years of torture, brainwashing and all self determination was taken. He had to comply. He was a good man and a loyal friend and they took everything from him and made him into something he would have hated. So cruel.
A really good detail is that the senator that’s revealed to be a hydra agent, is not a new person for this movie.
He was in fact the same senator in Iron Man 2 that tried to force Tony to give up the suit.
Meaning with the benefit of hindsight means hydra was trying to take the Iron Man suit.

Not only that, but there are nods to Stane being Hydra as well, thus the murder of Tony's parents and Stane taking over Stark Industries until Tony came back, then doing everything to undermine Tony and lock him out, steal all his tech, and eventually murder him too (note that Tony was one of Hydra's targets for the Insight Carriers).

I love that connection! It makes so much sense why he was so determined to get the Iron Man suit and thank goodness Tong refused! I forgot until I rewatched it not too long ago that Sitwell was in Thor and had a very brief moment in Avengers!

In which Colson and Sitwell are talking to each other at a diner, trying to figure out how they were going to get Colonel Ross so angry that he can’t help with a military hearing that would’ve had abomination exonerated and all the destruction in Harlem blamed on the Hulk.
It just adds an extra oomph to the good punch when it’s revealed that he was a hydra agent all along, because him and Colson seem to be such good friends.
Remember in the first captain America movie when Steve saved Bucky. Bucky was strapped to a bed. They had already experimented on him some with the serum. That’s how he survived the fall in the first place. Then they saved him and added the arm. He is basically a super soldier like Cap is.

Always enjoyed the fact that the Winter Soldier just shows up in scenes, he's never shown arriving. You hear his theme and then see him come from seemingly nowhere.

Fun fact, he has the literal highest on screen death rate of any actor of all time. And he’s one of the most prolific actors ever as well. His on screen death rate is about 91% for all his characters. Not even kidding.

The part that always kills me is that, maybe it was saying the end of the line thing that got Bucky to recognize Steve, but I always thought that was just the Steve he remembered. Bucky didn't grow up with the hero Steve rogers, he grew up with the skinny kid who wouldn't back down no matter how bad he was beat.
Fun Fact: Winter Soldiers theme has Bucky’s scream from the First Avenger when he’s falling mixed into it. Pretty haunting actually.
This is still my favorite MCU film to this day. Such a great cast, superb writing, a lot of great twists, and the action/fight sequences, specifically Cap vs WS the first time is probably one of the best fighting sequences in all of the McU. So glad you enjoyed it. Now… onto another top 5 MCU movies for me personally: Guardians of the Galaxy.
It's actually the composers scream. Still pretty cool tho that they factored the human trapped inside the machine into his personal theme.

What makes this one of the best MCU movies for me, is that even if you take away all the superpowers.... it's still an enthralling spy thriller. Too many superhero movies focus on the cgi, the cool superpower effects, and packing as many heroes into the movie as they can, but most don't realize that you have to start by telling a story that exists independently of all that.
That's why I loved Marvel comics so much when I was a kid... it didn't feel like I was reading a typical comics book.... the story was big, complex, and evolving. I felt like I was reading books intended for adults. I really appreciated them not pandering to the standard superhero tropes.
Yea that’s hurts the other movies. To much cgi the grounded approach helps this film go smoother than most mcu films
The first couple of Captain America movies are probably the closest to “traditional” movie tropes in the MCU. The war movie and the spy thriller. This one is barely about superpowers at all; there are very few stunts where you can’t imagine a James Bond movie trying to pull off something similar. (Substitute some Q-invented super-tech for the stuff the shield does.)

The guy Cap had a small amount of trouble taking out was Batroc the Leaper. He was an actual midlevel villain in Marvel comics. So he was a little elevated beyond average thugs.

I never thought two genres: superhero and political thriller would work together, but Captain America- The Winter Soldier mixed them up perfectly. Twists and turns in almost every scene, tension that keeps you at the edge of the seat, sheer perfection fight scenes, the Winter Soldier theme and the entire music score and soundtrack. Speaking of the theme: that sound you hear every time WS is on the screen, is in fact Bucky screaming when he fell from the train. They distorted it in that bone chilling, screeching sound that became so iconic.
By the by: as a Romanian, I couldn't be more proud for my fellow Sebastian Stan. His talent and excellent portrayal of Bucky/ The Winter Soldier, propelled him to the worldwide stardom.
This and Guardians back to back is so exciting for first time watchers.
No doubt one of the best and darkest marvel movies ever. Everything about this movie is great.

There's a few dark MCU entries these days. Thor 2, Incredible Hulk, Multiverse of Madness, Moon Knight and the upcoming Blade. Plus Venom and Venom 2 if they count.

@@Jantzku when you consider this film is a thriller/espionage movie and you take into account all the political drama involved in the movie, it feels like the most grounded marvel movie out there along with other grounded mcu movies like iron man and hulk. Sure ds2 is pretty dark because of the horror aspect of the movie but I feel like with all the themes of governmental betray, brainwashing, not being able to trust anyone, even the score makes the film feel dark to me. Sorry to rant but I just really love this movie
one of the craziest things was AGENTS OF SHIELD the series was in full swing when this movie came out, so the show had to adjust along with the events of this movie. it was kinda cool.
That was one of the best weeks in MCU history. That twist was huge and changed that show for the better. The Hail Hydra memes were hilarious.
I think I'm going to have to rewatch AoS again. When this movie came out and changed the show was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Season 4 was the single best season of any show I have ever watched.

On one hand it's hard to compare Winter Solider and movies like Infinity War or Endgame which built up over so many movies. But when push comes to shove, I've re-watched Winter Soldier more times.

Like Steve said, Bucky was experimented on by Zola after him and his unit were captured and during those experiments, he was given a version of the super soldier which in turn helps him survive the fall from the train but unfortunately loses his left arm when he uses it to break his fall and when Zola and Hydra pick him up, they replace his damaged left arm with the silver metal arm.
Bucky isn't evil or apart of Hydra willingly, he was taken by Hydra and then basically tortured and abused, even brainwashed into "The Winter Soldier." this perfect soldier to do their bidding, a mindless person that they can control and he cant fight them back because they'll just shock it out of him, making him forget all over again and send him out after keeping him on ice for long periods of time hence why he's called "The Winter Soldier."
James Buchanan Barnes is a good man deep down, always has been and he was taken advantage of by an evil organization. He's a victim in all this, plain and simple.
Also Steve isn't about to kill or leave Bucky, he's Steve's best friend, his brother so that's why he tries to get Bucky to remember who he is and doesn't want to fight him and Bucky doesn't either but he doesn't want to get in trouble with Hydra again and get his memory wiped again so that's why he resists until steve pushes him to start punching Steve until Steve says "I'm with you till the end of the line." which makes Bucky stop and you see the shocked look on his face like that phrase clicked in him because he's the one that said it to Steve first which is why he saves steve, gets him out of the water and waits to see if he's breathing before walking away and then shows up at the museum, looking at his little exhibit to find out about himself.
Also, I think it's sad that he finally recognizes Steve when his face is beat to a pulp. How many times did Bucky see him that way in an ally or parking lot? He finally recognized him because he saw the beat-up face of his best friend: the 5' 4", 95lb athsmatic from Brooklyn.
@@mathsalot8099 now you've described that, it is very sad if that's what he sees and remembers as he's coming out of it after Steve says "I'm with you to the end of the line."
It's also pretty plain to me that Bucky Barnes is still in there and comes to the surface. Redford's character give him a whole pep talk on how important his missions are to the benefit of society, and I think it's not the first time he had to do it. That's for the shadow of Bucky in there. Why would the Winter Soldier care. He is programmed to comply, not question.

You are so right. Bucky is a good man, a victim, and what he suffered is horrific. The timeline people have pieced together indicates it took them years to turn him into the Winter Soldier. Because his super serum makes it so he can heal from almost anything, his brain starts to heal and he starts to have flashes of memory. As they say in the movie, "he's unstable" and "he's been out of cryo too long." That's why Pierce gives him the pep talk, which plays to Bucky's desire to do good. And it's why they "wipe" him after missions and when he comes out of cryo.
Bucky isn't reluctant to fight Steve at the beginning of the fight on the helicarrier. He's pretty much blank, an automaton, at that point. The reason Steve retrieved his WWII uniform is to help jog Bucky's memory.
Bucky is one of the most fascinating characters in the MCU/comics. Sebastian Stan barely speaks in this film and he's wearing a mask and goggles half the time, but he does so much with his eyes and body language.
Fury's grave which wrote "The path of the righteous man..." is so funny XD referencing the movie Pulp Fiction. All time classic hit from Sam Jackson.
Fun fact: at 11:56 when Cap smashes into the wall with his shield while turning the corner, that wasn't part of the scene. He was running full force while filming and had too much momentum going into that corner lol

@@agresticumbra Idk about that but I do think Steve being motivated by hearing Bucky scream was a callback to the last time he heard him scream. I think the fear of losing him again is what made cap move with 3 bullets in his body
In Phase 1, the MCU was finding its legs, walking out into the world, after Avengers it started to STRUT, and this movie is where it gets it swagger it has ran with till this very day

I hated that in the later movies, Winter Soldier turned into "Machine Gun Guy" and didn't really show how bad ass he was anymore (except in Civil War)
@@brianlujan7089 Bucky is a human with morals, Winter Soldier is a programmed machine just to accomplish one goal, to kill at any coast and complete missions. They didn’t did anything to the character, you just didn’t understood the character arc.
@@reynaldolorenzo8409 yeah too many ppl don't differentiate the two. Bucky didn't even want to deal with the winter soldier stuff until the tv series they did. So hopefully the next time we see Bucky we see the winter soldier badassery blended into him

Granted there are a few "writing inconsistencies" but it doesn't deter this from being one of the greatest MCU movies to date. We all have our favorites.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE: Black Widow & Cap found out Hydra was behind so many things, including the death of Tony Stark's parents. Both Nat & Steve come out of this learning things are not always as they seem. Their mutual trust has gone up & they are bonding as friends ... as friends.
I really liked how Alex said Black Widow feels like a sister. I think that's intended the intended feeling you're meant to have towards her. Because the avengers feel that way about her.

@@self-motivationrafi8097 I think I shall pass on re-editing the whole damn script just because you demand it. However, I will help you out with a few inconsistencies since I said a few.
1) Ship Rescue Mission: Cap survived jumping out of a jet without a parachute over the water at a distance requiring far more durability than his body could handle. He clearly does not use his shield to break impact with the water. He clearly showed zero damage from the fall. This smacks of Hulk or Thor level durability.
2) Street Fight with Winter Soldier: Cap's shield is capable of absorbing and rebounding the impact of Thor swinging Mjolnir (his hammer) as seen in "The Avengers". That impact rebound flatted a large section of a forest and send Thor flying backward while Cap stood his ground. Then why would a far lesser impact from a bazooka blast send Cap flying?
3) Helicarrier Fight: Winter Soldier grabs Caps targeting blade as he becomes aware it is important to Cap's mission. He has plenty of opportunity to break the targeting blade yet didn't.

I had never been to a movie theater before so when i turned 24, my friends got tickets to watch winter soldier. That was one of the best days of my life i'll never forget. Everyone in that room was either screaming or clapping but i was crying at the beauty of just the entire experience. I'll always be in love with this film. Best birthday present ever. 🙌

Here in the UK I walk home at midnight. Its about 30 min walk in the countyside and rather boring doing it every night.
Except Marvel Mondays as its great to see Alex enjoy these films that we've all enjoyed and thus makes that dark walk all the brighter 😁.
this movie has easily the best fight scenes in the MCU. Mainly because it's not a bunch of different colored lasers.
And something people pointed out back when this first came out, is that the choice to have Robert Redford play Pierce was a very interesting one. If we assume he's been hydra for a long time, and that he's been the Winter Soldier's handler for a while, it suggests that they might've chosen him partly because when he was younger, Redford looked kinda like Steve did back in the 40s.
That's such a wild statement bc it proves that no matter how much they tortured bucky they still had to play to the man beneath in order to really control him.

Neat bit of trivia for you Alex. The narrator voice at the Captain America exhibit is Gary Sinise (Lieutenant Dan from Forrest Gump). His work with veteran's organizations made him the perfect choice for the part. It's not much of a fact but it is a Dope Ass fact.

I find it amazing how overwhelmingly involved you become then the huge levels of disbelief when anything remotely different happens on the screen.
Age of Ultron seems to be everyone’s least favorite avengers film. Imo it’s the most slept on. The Intro to new characters, setting up for Infinity War, the villain, the setting is all fucking crazy

Some MCU films cover various genres. This was an espionage film. Ant-Man is a heist film. Doctor Strange 2 is a horror film.
I was at my sister's house one Christmas and when I walked in the front door, my brother in law, who served as a staff sergeant in the Marines and did two tours in Vietnam, and his son, who recently retired after twenty years in the Air Force, were both sitting in the living room watching this movie. Two men who never read a comic book in their lives. That's how good this movie is.

Those scientists at the end are also Hydra, using the scepter of Loki (which he used in Avengers) to experiment on voluenteers. All died until they experimented on the Maximoff twins, who obviously survived and gained powers.
Now, in the comics, they are mutants (children of Magneto, to be exact) but during filming and release of these movies, mutants couldn't be used due to copyright issues, so they were called 'enhanced'. That's all I'm going to say on this. Have fun with James Gunn.

Secondly, I'm loving watching your genuine reactions to some of my favorite movies of all time. Watching your MCU journey has been a real treat. I especially love this reaction. Dawg, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is hands down the greatest MCU film EVER. It won't ever be topped, sorry to say. There are some who get real damn close, which you will find out soon enough. Each movie is sooo rewarding by its self-contained plotlines, by the easter eggs spread through-out and by the connecting thread of them all. MCU is the rocks! Glad you're (finally :P) on board!
Fury shows us a mistake in this film that, unfortunately, many men better than myself have made far too many times. Fury knew that the Helicarrier program would be safe 'because Nick Fury was running it and Nick Fury is trustworthy.' Let's grant that and say that he is. Not even Nick can live forever, not in this universe anyway. What happens when the trigger gets passed to someone else? It's not enough that we try and predict how we will use a technology or weapons platforms. We must also try and predict how the enemy will use it and try to stop that from taking place. It would be better if intelligent people could decide that, even though we know how to do a thing, we probably shouldn't. Unfortunately, we all know how that turns out.
You were right when you said that Cap had every reason to kill TWS (no spoilers in comments). That would have been the most expedient thing, and probably an alright call, tactically speaking. There was never any chance that Steve would do that. Part of his character is that he ALWAYS makes the right call. He was a good man before he was given anything, and the serum he received, "turns good into great." Whether you're on his side is a good litmus test for whether the side you're on is the right one. There is a very close relationship between the two men, and there is no way on God's green Earth that Cap would break that trust. The idea of 'never leave a man behind' is part of his core values. I'd like to think I'd do the same thing. If I have to sacrifice my life for that of my brother, or my brothers in arms, so be it. That's a call a good leader needs to be ready to make.

Honestly, I never got the vibe that Natasha and Steve were ever actually into each other as anything more than friends, but I can understand how you'd feel like they were leading towards that.

If you watched the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on TV, the release of Winer Soldier followed the revelation that S.H.I.E.L.D. had been infiltrated and corrupted by Hydra mere days after the show aired. Was always super impressed by the coordinated release dates of the TV show and this movie. Total pro move with that kind of fan service! Easily one of Marvel's best showings.

On whether to watch it - most people like it once they get through the bit before The Winter Soldier movie was released. Season 4 was an amazing season of TV.

Winter Soldier is my favorite of the standalone films, mostly because even if you powered everyone down, it still stands up as a good spy-thriller. Adding the extra sauce that is our knowledge of the MCU-ness of it all just makes it better. Ragnarok and Black Panther are right behind it though, I can re-watch them endlessly and have done so.
The best Avenger's film before we get 2 finale films was Capt. America: Civil War though. it is a better executed team film than Avengers 1 or 2.
Zemo was an amazing villain. Perfectly executed. Daniel Bruhl can do no wrong.

Black panther sucked big time
This is my favorite MCU movie but that doesn't mean that the others aren't good too. Guardians would be a very close second for me. And it is totally worth sitting through every single minute of every single movie just to set up Infinity War and Endgame. Forget goosebumps, I cried during those - they made me cry for comic book heroes because I knew the characters so well. Just the thought of Steve coming to visit dementia-suffering Peggy, week after week, maybe day after day, introducing himself to her every time still makes me tear up.

5:25 1, you can tell steve is playing with the guy, at the end he easily finishes him off. 2, the guy he is fighting is one of the best UFC fighters in the past 15 years, so it’s semi plausible he could put up a fight against cap

Cap's shield absorbs energy. That's how he took a hit from Thor's hammer without breaking every bone in his arm. It's also why the bullets Carter shot at him in the first movie just fell to the ground. (It's also why the minigun rounds bouncing everywhere is a continuity error.)

I get a perverse joy out of seeing declarative statements like that because... I understand Marvels long plan.
We comic book fans have been looked down upon for the longest time because most people think of comic books as being "kids stuff". Well, Marvels plan with the MCU has been to teach the general public that really rich stories can be made with an unbelievable premise.
They said; "Can you believe in a guy making a weapon, a suit of armor" and people said, yeah. Sure. "Well, can you believe in a guy who is tougher than most humans, and he calls himself a god? How about a process that makes a human like a god?" and people ate that up. "Put them all together!" and people lost their minds.
This movie is a reminder that they all still operate in a living world. We get a lot of these, and they are great.
Next, Marvel will take you to outer space, another step into the unbelievable. You will also be introduced to heroes who already existed, but we never knew about them because the very concept of super hero and super villain had not come to light within this living world until recently. You will learn that magic exists and that all the powers on display have their own rules. They won't hold your hand by explaining these rules, but they leave enough breadcrumbs to work out the basics.
Eventually you will learn about the multiverse, and once you have started upon "What If", I would REALLY love it if you revisit that statement about "the craziest plot twist ever!".
Enjoy dude, as I have enjoyed your musical journey and now enjoy your MCU upbringing.

Id argue Winter Solider is where it truly takes off. I mean i do put winter soldier as my top non avengers movie. Its hard to say the mcu peaked here when theres still infinity war.

The Winter Soldier literally elevated the MCU to a new standard of quality. Every movie before this, even The Avengers, was kind of campy and stereotypical. This was a huge move that shouted to the world that the MCU is not just for comic book fans. Not to mention that this is a very politically conservative film, which is a breath of fresh air. This movie takes itself seriously in all of the best ways, and every movie that follows was better for it.
And the cap stealth suit upgrade was amazing
