"Can't believe Hydras been hiding in shield all this time" that was kind of the main message of this movie. The thing about nazisim is that it never truely dies, it hides beneath the surface and rebrands. Thats why I loved this movie so much. I remember what I thought when I saw this in the theater: "Marvel has changed the game." This wasn't just a superhero action movie, it's a tense, paranoid 1970s-style political thriller. It was audacious and intelligent, and it represented a change in how Marvel made movies. After CA: WS, each movie works in a different genre than others in the series. There is sci-fi action, family drama, family comedy, sci fi buddy comedy, psychedelic trippiness, a movie that's essentially about divorce, and more. Most movies tend to push things in a different direction than any MCU movie that came before, and it all started with this one.

When you reflect on this movie Steve's story becomes even more poignant. Remember that he is a man who is all alone in the future. Peggy has lived her life and Bucky is the last thread Steve has to his home and his past. In the end he gave up everything for his values and was willing to die at the hands of Bucky than call him an enemy. I feel for him falling off the carrier and can't help but think he was ready to surrender his life without a struggle - a man of principle to the very end.

And I always put it into perspective by reminding myself that he crashed into the ice less than a year ago in his personal timeline. He was fighting Hydra in the 1940’s a few months back, now he’s processing everyone he loved being dead or dying, fighting aliens, and learning that his battle against Hydra was in vane in the 20-teens! That’s a mind fuck if ever there was one!

This movie cemented Cap as one of my favorite characters in the MCU. Like you said, he is too pure. Some trivia:
Abed appeared because the Russo Brothers got noticed for the directing in Community and they bring in other actors and references from Community to their MCU films
All of these Phase 2 MCU films involve a character losing an arm as a tribute to Empire Strikes Back (Bucky loses his arm, Thor's arm was cut off in an illusion, and Tony cuts off Killian's arm)
Sebastian Stan (Bucky) played with stunt knives on set to be able to perform the knife stunts (when WS spins and flips his knives around) himself
And the narrator of Cap's museum section is Gary Sinise. Sinise has been an outspoken advocate of US veterans and for years has used his celebrity status to support them in numerous ways

  • @victorsixtythree

This is one of my favorite MCU movies for sure! The whole movie has the feel of a 70's conspiracy thriller. (It's one of the things that can be fun about the super-hero genre - it can accommodate a lot of different types of films.)
In the wake of the Watergate scandal in 1972, (where the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate hotel were broken into eventually leading to President Nixon resigning) there were a number of movies centered around the idea of vast government conspiracies. Robert Redford himself starred in a few himself - like "Three Days of the Condor" about a low level CIA operative who suddenly finds himself involved in a secret government plot and "All the President's Men" were he played Bob Woodward, one of the primary reporters who uncovered the Watergate scandal. So, it was quite clever to cast Redford as the bad guy Alexander Pierce. Also, in some of the shots of the SHIELD headquarters building, in the background you can see the actual Watergate Hotel where the break-ins occurred.
