And here are the results of placing a double screened dividing board into a beehive. With 62 of our hives split using this method, all 62 of them, that 100%, formed emergency cell queens proving the efficiency and easy of using this method. I hope you will try this out for yourself. Thanks for watching. God's peace to all.

Loved that video
I’m still stuck in a snow bank. Your colonies look terrific! Loved finding the queen cells
When you are ready for a break from the cold, come on down, we are going to hit 82 today. And look, don't worry about helping out in the yards, I just finished our splits yesterday so we can just enjoy some great food and talk about the honey that's going to be coming in. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoffI stopped by the abbey today to visit the gift shop and will be passing through again soon, what days are you usually there ?
Part of why I luv watching and listening to your show are all the bird sounds.
I'm so lucky and blessed to be able to work in nature. Thanks for watching. God's peace Jennie.

Hey Mr. Ed and GTC. . .
52f is Summer 🤭 for us here in Scotland 🏴
Chilly. . . My Bees must be hard as Nails, doing orientation flights at 48F
Loving this Double Screen Board Series (Part 2)
Yep it's Spring, and it's due to Snow on 1st April or so. . Right !?!
Splits will have to wait a few weeks, so the Beek can wear a Beesuit, and not Hat and Mittens . 🙃

Happy Beekeeping 2023.
🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
Keep them Scottish bees warm, and they will get the honey for you. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Good morning gentleman. Hope all is well. Glad to see Charlie. Haven't seen wreck it Ralph in awhile. Hope he is well. Sorry about the cold weather. Move to Indiana, it's always cold here it seems like. Take care fellas
Your hives are doing good! Lots of honey to be harvested eventually.🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
I sure do hope so, but it is looking good right now. Thanks for watching. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
I love all your videos. I am a first year beekeeper and have grown my 5 frame nuc into two 8 frame brood boxes and think I need to add another.. they have almost filled 2 medium honey supers already not to mention loads of honey in the brood boxes. I may add another brood box to give them room and not swarm and this next spring I will split it up. Watching your videos has really helped me up my bee game! Thanks
You and your bees are smoking! Way to go! I'm delighted to hear that my videos have been a source of information for you, and I happy to share what I know with those who care to watch. Thank you so much for doing so, and until the next one, God's peace Chip.
Mr. Ed
Enjoy seeing you all work. Considered bee keeping but the more I watch the more complicated it seems.
It is only as complicated as you want to make it. Since I only go into my hives twice a year, to make splits and to harvest the honey, I find it very simple. Don't throw in the towel before you take your bath. God for it! Thanks for watching. God's peace Randy.
Mr. Ed
I'm starting my hive in a few days. I've been watching so many videos and I know I just need to start. I plan on spending as little money as possible by using free material to design something that resembles what I've seen. So all I now need, is the starter wax for the frames and I've got my first ever hive. Sharing this to encourage you to just start and see what happens. 😃
Mr Ed, I know it’s Friday when I start drinking my coffee and open UA-cam and there’s your video. I guess we’re going to have to say the 2 Amigos since Ralph rarely makes a showing.
You will see him next Friday, hang tight. God's peace Don.

Mug up from central NH where it is 38F with winds are blowing at 10-15 mph with gust to 25 at 9am. Typical spring wind. If it was 50 and windy the snow would be gone within a week, but that ain't going to happen. Long range forecast temps are not to break 50 F until 4/11. No pollen yet. You guys get all the early fun! Thanks for posting. Have a great day, Brice
You are correct, we have all the fun down here....at least a little bit earlier than most. God's peace Brice.
Mr. Ed
I enjoy your bee shows so much. The joy you have in the whole bee experience is how many of us bee lovers feel. It's so much fun to share our joy.
Charlie is amazing spotting those queens. He's incredible.
I agree 100%. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Mr. Ed, every time I see your smile, it never fails to make me grin!
I know beekeeping is super complex in practice, but seeing how simple you make it seem and with such passion, really inspires me. I recently started gardening in the past year, and I approach it the same way you do with beekeeping. It truly allows you to enjoy life to the fullest when you do something you love!
Thank you for the wonderful content and keep on smiling! Maybe one day I can start beekeeping myself (if the wife will ever allow a hive in our backyard)!
Thank you so much for your very kind words and for taking the time to follow along with my bee wrangling adventures, it is greatly appreciated. If only you could convince your wife about putting a beehive or 2 by the garden. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
This was great really enjoyed it Have a blessed day
Hi guys! Well done. I’m in MN. Sunny and 45 today. I’ll be looking at some sheltered nucs.
My brother in Indiana is a little warmer and he follows your style of beekeeping pretty closely.
Thank you for sharing the love of bees❤
Keeping bees is unique to the area one lives in, and in learning techniques, local knowledge is the secret to being successful at it. Thanks for watching. God's peace Andrew.
Mr. Ed
It’s just so amazing to see how you and Charlie manage to do these stuff with the bees, what a wonderful sight to see.
good to see the turn over of Queen cells and a good split . Lucking forward to next week.
Thank you for making these videos! I've learned so much from you all.
You are very welcome, and I hope you will continue to watch, learn, and enjoy. Remember, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace.

LOVE watching your videos! Mine are doing the exact same thing as yours, hope to get back in them this weekend and HOPEFULLY they look as good as yours! God BLESS!
Thanks Mr. Ed and crew!
You are very welcome, and thank you for taking the time to watch. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Man you’ve got the bees. Beautiful cells. You and Charlie are working hard. Everything looks great. Really enjoyed the video. Take care and God bless.
I have a small bee yard, with only 6 hives currently. My goal this year is to have zero swarms escape by splitting them as needed, and if they make swarm cells, to bank some queens in nucs. I'm still pretty new, so I have a lot to learn, but at least I've learned to keep them alive. Mites are bad up here in VA if you don't treat, so I have an OAV gun and it works well. Guys around me trying to go treatment free lose most or all of their hives every year. I've lost none in 3 years, which is pretty cool! I think the screen method will work out, based on this follow up video. Thanks for all your helpful videos! I've been binge watching.
Congratulations on keeping your bees alive, it is a real challenge. Keep up your efforts and continue to learn. Thanks for watching. God's peace Tony.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff Thanks, I appreciate that! God's peace is a very valuable thing to have!
Jeff and Charlie, we all hope you are taking care of yourselves. You are both a National Treasure and the bee community would suffer without your knowledge and GREAT sense of humor. As a Connecticut Beekeeper my hives died off this winter - have 3 packages coming on Sunday (hope it's not too cold/rainy). God bless and keep you both.
Thank you so much for your blessings, kind words, and taking the time to follow along with our bee wrangling adventures, it is all GREATLY appreciated. Best wishes for your successes in the coming year. God's peace brother.

Hi Jeff. Thanks for posting! I'll be checking my splits this weekend.
I hope you have the same results as we did, 100%, 62 out of 62 had emergency cells in them. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

Explained that great 😊mr ed yourself good time Charlie stay busy that's alot of work bees sure need you they are happy God bless Mr ed good time Charlie 😊
Great video Jeff. God bless
So awesome! Going to be going into three more of mine today to split out. Did four yesterday that were so full that I ended up with 8 nucs from them. It’s my third year so I don’t have the equipment built up or I’d much rather do your method for splitting! Much easier and can do more hives that way. I’ll probably come away from today’s with 5 more nucs from the number of bees I know they have! Have a great weekend, keep on making more cause I’m keeping on watching lol. God Bless!
I can't wait to get started, I'm about 3 or 4 weeks out from the time to put up swarm traps in my area.
Wow that so great. The hive is so big and have a lot of honey.
Our bees are really doing well this year, and I can hardly wait till the honey starts coming in. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. Well done . Informative 👍👍👍. Thank you for sharing. Be safe🇨🇦
I love my lazy boy recliner and it swivels too. What a great video. I have got to make me one of those double screen boards this weekend and see how it works for my setup.
They are very easy to make, and are the simplest way to split hives for beginners or old timers like myself. I did 62 hives using the boards and had 62 hives produce emergency cell queens in them. You will not be disappointed with the results. Again, thank you for your gift and for watching. God's peace Jim.
Mr. Ed
Man it looks like it’s going to bee a beeutiful bee keeping season this year! It’s only March and these boxes are full. I can’t wait to see what the honey crop will bee. LOL. Good to see y’all this morning, I always look forward to your posts on Fridays. Have a great weekend guys and thanks for sharing part of your day with us :)
I have a feeling our honey crop will be a great one this year based on the number of bees in the hives this early on. Now, if only Mother Nature cooperates and allows the nectar flow to be abundant and long. I'm happy to be a part of your Friday's , thank you for allowing me that honor. Until the next one, God's peace.

Hey, we got a lot of nectar too over here! Queens are laying and the colonies are expanding, can’t wait to check them out tomorrow and see how they are doing, great video, love the informations
When the boxes are full of bees and the nectar is coming in, those are the perfect ingredients to make ANY beekeeper happy! Glad to hear you liked the video, thanks so much for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Making splits like a BOSS!! I stopped using the stick on my verticals….awesome video!! Beautiful cells at the end!!
I'll probably stop using them as well, it just bothers me to have the field bees all ganged up on the back of the box. Those were the prettiest ones we saw all day. Julian would have kept them all....I did. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
Whooo gotta love hearing that cold propolis crack when you pop those frames loose.
Actually, I don't because all I can think about is how many hive beetles are going to be released from their corrals by my action. Thanks for watching. God's peace Steve.
Mr. Ed
I love your videos. I'm going to try doing my own queens this year.
The method I use is very fail safe with almost a 100% chance of working. I finished 62 splits with all 62 hives producing queen cells. I still have 12 or 13 that have to be checked and that will be done next week. Good luck with your splits. God's peace Linda.

I learned on your about page you're in Louisiana after watching this video. I like your techniques & see the value of learning from you. However, being in a residential area of SW Michigan the relevance of your region is limited. Thank you for publishing nevertheless~
Though the particulars of keeping bees varies from place to place, many of the techniques practiced hold true everywhere. My guy crushed so many bees at 11:59 😢 they make bee brushes for a reason also you can set the super on one corner and slowly slide it into place. That’s how I do mine I minimize the little bee deaths as much as possible.

Mr. Ed
Thank you for doing this follow up video. Because of your last video, I made a double screen board and split a hive on Friday. The queen was on the bottom in mine. Is there any reason to move her to the top? I plan to look for queen cells next week. Pretty exciting to learn a new method. I hope it works out.
I also made a traditional split, pulling 3 frames of brood and a lot of bees from a hive that was huge and the queen and a bunch of bees from a hive that was making swarm cells. Made for a really big split, a deep plus a medium nuc, but that's good, because they will fill up quickly, and will probably go into full sized boxes within 2 weeks. A good start to the season! Thanks again for your great videos and your help.
The reason I like her in the top is because I will move her from the original location to help reduce the chances of her swarming later in the season. If she is moved, it steals all her field bees as they go back to the original location. God's peace Tony.
Mr. Ed
I always learn from and enjoy your vidoes! Twith the abundance of bees and a lot of brood into the top box with the old queen and fewer bees and brood? hank you for sharing your knowledge and experience! I am wondering why you don’t put some bees and a frame of brood from the the bottom box? God bless you and your bees!
Because there were so many bees in both the top and bottom box, I want the field bees from the top box to return to the original hive after I move the top box away. This helps reduce the chance of the old queen swarming by stealing her workers and helps the bottom box hive bring in nectar. My main concern about keeping bees is honey production. Thanks for watching. God's peace Mary.
Mr. Ed
52 degrees chilly, looking outside at 20's.
I do hate the cold, stay warm brother. God's peace Brett.
Mr. Ed
Good morning Mr Ed, will you take some of those extra queen cells to use or requeen, or just leave them? Especially the 6 on one frame. WOW! That absolutely deserves a Thank You Jesus! Gods blessings Mr Ed, I thank you for your videos and should be getting my 1st bees (5 frame Nuc) at the end of April. 😊
I leave all the cells in the box and let the bees work it out amongst themselves. After all, there can only be one queen per hive. God's peace Brian.
Mr. Ed
Nice one Mr. Ed, thanks for another great video.
Eagle-eye Charlie, I think he must have been taking private queen-spotting lessons from the Rooster?
Just wondering if you were to face the dividing board entrance to the front you wouldn't need to put the stick between the boxes?
Have a great day!
Charlie has been giving the Rooster lessons on queen spotting....and it still has not helped him. The entrance is placed in the rear of the hive to prevent confusion and create separation between the hives. Thanks for watching. God's peace Alan.
Mr. Ed
Hi Mr a
good video, so this is your way to expand, cant remember i have seen videos about gueen grafting, havent seen mutch about feeding in your videos. Dont feed mutch?
I do not graft or feed our bees. I will feed swarms or cut out to get them started, but once they get settled in, they are on their own. Thanks for watching. God's peace Bub.
Mr. Ed
Hey Mr. Ed! I've learned so much by watching your videos. We installed a double screen board and was pleasantly surprised one week later with multiple emerging queen cell capped. That was 4/1. Checked today to see if those splits have mated queens, eggs, or larvae and there was nothing. How long should I wait for the mated queen to show eggs or larvae? Also, after said time, should I combine the split back to the original hive? We're in a nectar flow now and I only saw one drone today. When we did the split.....there were many. Thanks so much for all that you do. God Bless you Mr. Ed!
One thing the bee have taught me, patience. I give the bees 4 weeks after I find the emergency cell, by that time you should see brand new larva in the cells. If at that point I see no new larva, and out of 80 some odd splits this year there were none, thank you Jesus, I will add another frame of brood from one of my old queens to let them try again. Then the whole process starts again. Thank you for your blessings and for watching. God's peace Carolyn.
Mr. Ed
Cold! Here just outside Chicago we’re under a Winter Storm Watch. 5-8” of snow! I’ll trade you.
We hit 82 today, I love it. God's peace Bill.
Mr. Ed
Outstanding Video Jeff! I was just wondering that after all of your manipulations how many of your colonies actually swarm??👍👍
You have to ask that question in about 6 weeks. It's at that point my old queens are most likely to swarm as their hives have swollen in numbers. As long as I keep ahead of them by giving them room, by adding another super, they will not swarm. I track all my old queens so I know which hives they are in. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Hey Jeff thanks for the show. Did you have any die outs this winter?
We had somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 hives die out over the winter and fall. Still, our overall losses were less than 35% and I'm very happy with that number. Thanks for watching. God's peace Fred.
Mr. Ed
Great to see your vids and I’m excited about your Layens hive.
Time index 22:18 Jeff was that a piping virgin queen sound?
Sorry, but I did not hear a thing. But I would have to say it was not due to the fact I split this hive even before there were queen cells in it. Thanks for watching. God's peace Timothy.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff maybe just a couple of seconds before 22:18 right after the queen was spotted
Jeff, thank you for your videos, Question, I have a brood box that is now Queenless, not sure why. the bees made 2 emergency cells , sealed and both were nice formed cells of good size. ... I inspected the 2 cells 15 days later, I found both cells were opened on the side /middle of the cell, and after several inspections over a week no queen found
Why would the bees build nice sealed cells then open the cell from the side middle and destroy a queen when they need a queen.? Any thoughts
I think you have a queen in your box and you just have not seen her. Typically, it is the queen who chews a hole in the cell to kill the other queen that is in there. I would look for new brood, either eggs or uncapped larva, in another week or so if the queen can't be found. That is the simplest way of knowing you have a queen without spotting her yourself. God's peace brother.

Hello Judi, and thank you so much for wanting to support the monks and their works, for the blessings you gave, and for taking the time to watch this video. St. Joseph Abbey, a Benedictine monastery, is located about 50 miles north of New Orleans, Louisiana, and is home to about 34 monks ranging from the age of 27 to 84. They do have a web page, and the address is:
saintjosephabbey.com
if you'd like to find out more about it. Also, it is the largest seminary college in the United States. Of course they happily accept all donations as this is their primary source for sustaining their lifestyle, but they also have several cottage industries that contribute to their well being as well, and these you will discover if you look at the web page. Any contribution goes into a general fund, however if you specify "Abbee Honey" on the donation, the funds will be directed to that department, and this help me tremendously to continue the work I do as a volunteer for the monks. Again, thank you so much for your support and your blessing. Also, I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace.

Jeff , Can you take one of the frames with a Queen cell with the nurse bees and put them into a box with maybe half the other frames leaving the rest of the unhatched Queens in the other box and do a split that way ?
Sure can, but you have to give them some food frames as well since there would be no field bees with them. Thanks for watching. God's peace Keith.
Mr. Ed
And I have 8 framed boxes I recon I should have another frame in there because to much room and the bees are showing me so and there’s so many bees Charley come over I need to see my queen god bless boysmr Ed can I wash the head peice of the bee suit
Just make sure your box has the correct number of frames in it so the bees won't draw wacky comb. Also, you don't really need to "see" your queen. As long as you find new brood, you have a queen in the box. Thank you for your blessings and for watching. God's peace Nola.
Mr. Ed
You guys in sweatshirts? That's shorts and T shirt weather. Hello from Wisconsin
You guys have it so hard. Give me the heat any day over the cold. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Do the lizards eat the bees? If not could adding a lizard to the top of the box help control small hive Beatles?
They do eat the bees, but just the slow ones. But what is awesome about them is they do eat beetles as well. Thanks for watching. God's peace Larry.
Mr. Ed
So the queens are in the top box that often? Never thought about it before but that makes. Thanks.
Bless you!
They really are....go figure. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
I know you said in a previous video that you are not treating your bees. I'm curious if over the years, you have less dead-outs, as you are splitting from better genetics? Thanks for the video!
I really believe mites are not a serious issue here in the South compared to other parts of the country, and I do also think the feral bees that are in our bee yards can handle the mite load at present. Say hello to my jacket for me. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff Thanks for the info! Interesting about the mites, for some reasons I assume it was the opposite for very hot weather, like hive beetles! Thanks for the reply. Your jacket is still looking amazing, in it's display case !
Will lemongrass oil in a big plastic jar with holes attract bees so please let me know thank you.
It is possible to have to much of a good thing which is why I use a Q tip and dip it into the lemongrass oil. Then, 2 weeks later go back and refresh the trap with a new Q tip. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. Mr. Ed
Does the first queen selfmanage the multiple other emergency cells in the hive ? No risk for swarming when you give them an 2th (top) box ?
Yes she does, she will kill them. Bees can swarm at any time, even after adding an additional super, but it is very unlikely to happen if you keep ahead of them by giving them space. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. Hi! I’m over in Pass Christian- I noticed this video was shot just before the freeze. How is this affecting your bees? All of my blackberries froze, the privet is back sporadically, and the popcorn trees are getting new leaves.
I went to Biloxi yesterday and was looking at all the blooms along I-10. Lots of privet, and your tallow has tassels all over them. Here, it's about the same. Thanks for watching. God's peace Jodi.
Mr. Ed
Have you tried hive beetle traps placed on top of the frames? I have noticed that many beekeepers use them and say they are effective.
I do use them in areas that the SHB is really bad. Other than that, I let the bees manage them. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Jeff, please explain. You put a super on top of the brood box but you didn’t put a Queen excluder between the two. Won’t your Queen lay in the super without the excluder in place?
I don't use excluders. It matters not to me if the queen gets into the honey super and lays. Because I run all deeps in our hives, if the queen does go up there and lay, I simply transfer a frame of honey from the box below for a frame of brood that was in the honey super. It's just my way of doing it. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. Now then we need to know how the new lazy boy worked out! 😂
It must bee working great, I have not heard from Charlie in 3 days. ARe we still doing the removal when I head your way? God's peace Jeremy.
Mr. Ed
It's working real well I would assume! Always up for a removal. Just started another yard in field store this week, so I split down some bees pretty good to get about half the hives the land owner needs (AG Exempt rules)
I sent you a email as well, can put more in them things.
