Double screened dividing board splits.

    On this video I show how I use a double dividing board to make a split. I visit our St John Bee yard where I had placed 4 double dividing boards in hives that did not have swarm or superseding cells in them on my last visit. By placing a doubled screened board between the boxes, it forces the bee to draw out emergency cells in the box that the queen is not in thus making it possible for me to split the hive and averting the hive to swarm.
    The one scenario I forgot to talk about when using a double screened board is what happens when you go back 7 to 10 days later to check for cells and there are none in the box that the queen is not in. In those instances I have a number of options:
    1. I could remove the board and simply rejoin the hives.
    2. I could add a frame of brood, one that has eggs 3 days or younger on it, I just guess and I have good luck with that.
    3. I could take a frame from another hive with an emergency cell or two one it and put it in that box...that is after knocking all the bees on the frame back into the box they came from.
    4. Buy a queen and add her to the hive.
    And there probably there are several other solutions to the problem, but at least it is not a hopeless situation.
    I'm really itching to do a removal, but with the coronavirus still having it's way with the world, I simply have to wait just like everyone else is doing. I hope all are practicing healthy choices, and I continue to pray for those who are suffering now and those who will suffer due to the effects this virus will cause to our economy.
    And though these are difficult times, I still pray all will remember to live the joy of Easter and Christ's resurrection. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

    I use a lot of boards and learned from a guy who uses 1k boards. Mainly in the fall.
    I was taught to keep the board entrance on the same side as the main entrance. When you pull the top box you don’t have bees trying to get into the back of the box. The top bees just end up going to the bottom entrance without a lot of fuss.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 роки тому

    Kinda funny how the bees dislike the camera. Well, I guess if someone brought a camera on MY property and proceeded to tear up my house and talk about MY family and how they were gonna help themselves to MY pantry….I suppose I’d take a shotgun and invite them to leave! So we all have our own sting…. Thanks for another great video! This is the way I like to split my hives. I’m not much for the whole queen grafting and all…I know you can make money with it but it don’t seem natural. Jeff, You mention how the smaller superseding cells are inferior based on size. But shouldn’t the size of the cell theoretically be almost as large? I understand the capped portion makes the cell look smaller but the cell actually extends the depth of the cell to plastic foundation as well. This extension is rarely if ever addressed when determine queen cell size. With a swarm cell the entire cup and capped end is visible making the cell look larger. Thoughts?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 роки тому +1

      It's not necessarily inferior based on it's size, rather it's based on the age of the egg that was chosen to produce the queen. You are absolutely correct when you say the cell extends to the plastic foundation, which often gives the appearance of a small cell when in truth they are the same size. I saw some beautiful queens emerge this year from dinky emergency cells. Great comment, thanks for watching. Stay safe, God's peace Joshua.

    Jeff I do something similar to you, but I have found over he years that if you specifically select only a couple frames with eggs and then use OTS method the queen cells developed are a much higher quality. Like I said I raise many of my queens using a double screen, and sometimes depending how many notches I make On natural comb I can harvest a dozen nice queen cells. Just a thought.

    Would you ever use the double dividing board to introduce a purchased queen in the hive that is queen-less (as a result of using the dividing board)? If so, would you follow the procedure of moving the upper hive and allowing the hives in the moved hive to return to the original location?

    Hello MR ED, thank you Jeff very interesting and informative video, I’m really happy I have UTUBE so I can learn so much stuff from all of you experienced beekeepers, Jeff can you tell me please what breed of bee do you find easier and more productive to have I started with Italian type bees but I’m hearing from a pot of good beekeepers over here in the UK that they like to have the Buckfast bees plus if I may ask another question what do you think of the polystyrene hives I’ve never tried them and I don’t know any off my other beekeeping friends that have had them either ! Well thank you Jeff for sharing your expertise and posting your excellent videos for all of us , Stay safe and god bless my friend.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 роки тому

      Hello Peter, I will tell you my opinion on what a good breed of bees is, it's the ones that you pull out of someones house. With all the different species of bees to select from, really, how is a guy to know that's the one for me? For that reason, the single most important trait in a bee that I look for is survivability, can the bees withstand whatever Mother Nature throws at them without me doing anything with them. In other words, without treatments or feeding. Are Buckfast bees good, yes, heck I'd like a few of those. What about Russians, Italians, Cornies, and on and on, they are all good, but what's going to do the best for you is something you will have to work out for yourself. Personally, I don't mind doing the work taking bees from structures and tending them, I don't pay money for them and if they perish, I'll go get more. Eventually, I'll get the bees to stick and they will develop their own species due to the intermingling of the hives. I am now in the 4th year of working under that auspice, and can see already a certain degree of success as witnessed by the bees in this video. As far as poly hives go, I understand that they are pretty common in the UK and due to the weather conditions there, they maintain heat very well. Personally, I do not have experience with them however. I'm sorry I could not be more help for you, but with a lot of things in life, we have to take circumstances and make them fit our way of living. If you can do that, you will find contentment with your choices. Thank you for your blessing, and stay safe yourself. God's peace brother..

    Hi Jeff
    How does the queen or even the bees know which are drone, queen and regular eggs.? Is that just by instinct or is there some pheramones that the brood eggs emit that make that distinction possible?
    Also are your boxes painted different color for any paticular reason. Some are white, pink, a,few yellow etc?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 роки тому

      Almost all the eggs that the queen lays will develop into a bee, a drone, a worker, or a queen. If it's a drone bee the queen will lay an egg that is not fertilized. If she lays a fertilized egg it will become a worker, and if a worker egg is fed royal jelly, it becomes a queen. AS far as the paint goes, it just looks prettier with different colors. Thanks for watching. Stay safe, God's peace Douglas.

    Looks like a really simple and minimally disturbing method, both of which I love. But I dont understand the need for the screen, would a simple wooden board not suffice?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  3 роки тому

      A solid board would work, but the screened board serves a few functions a solid board can't provide. It allows the bees to share the queen pheromone in case the hive needs to be rejoined because the bees did not make an emergency cell, and also it allows the bees to share heat. Because we do our splits in the early spring, temperatures can get pretty cold. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

    If I heard you correctly; using your divider board method you are creating emergency queens which you said are not as viable as supersedure or swarm cells; so why would you want inferior queens?

      It is not that the cell is "not as viable," most beekeepers prefer swarm cells and superseder cells because the cell was made for a queen to be grown in. An emergency cell is a very good cell, after all, a new queen will emerge from it, and if she is an "inferior" queen, the bees can always supersede her at a later date. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

    How do you decide which colonies to do this to? Do you do this to prevent swarming?

      I will split EVERY hive in our yards, but the ones that have swarm cells in them at the time of the split I will use those cells to make the split. God's peace Mark.

    I had never heard of using loud sounds to corral a swarm. Then I learned that it simulates thunder and they all land. Is that what you believe?

      I do not know the reason the bees will land, but they often will. Here is a link to a video I made last year showing it happen. Thanks for watching. Stay safe, God's peace Marcia.

    Happy Easter!!What does it mean to checkerboard a hive?

      Happy Easter to you and yours as well Chris. Checker boarding frames means alternating drawn frames with ones that are not drawn, it helps drawing out even comb......most of the time. Stay safe, God's peace.
