I'm glad the people at the NC conference were so nice. I'd hate to have seen a riot start up after you demonstrated the proper general population yard use of a shank.
Don't know if you were aware of this or not. Right after I did the presentation, everyone ran out to the vendor selling them and bought them all out. To my understanding, they were arming themselves and did not have to have a permit to carry them. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoffI hate I missed the NC event. We wanted to go, but we were already out of town. Hopefully we get to make it to one soon. Glad the event went well. 👍
Hi Mr Ed. Here in Scotland 🏴 we call this The Demaree Method. The Demaree Board 'stops' the Bees 'touching each other aka passing on 'the Queen Pheromones' so those where the Queen isn't 'think' they are Hopelessly Queenless (!) They're not ! She's either in the Basement or the Attic. 🤭 By doing Splits via the Demarre Method : you don't need so much Equipment re Hive Boxes. Also those in the 'Dwindling' Side (not have the Queen laying up more Babies) can 'share the Hive Warmth.' And once the 'Queen Cells are made' and moved elsewhere, means you still have a Massive Colony to combine back together and get you a Big Yummy Honey Crop. What's not to like. 😎 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2024 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 A Demarre Board is easy to make : use any Timber that is thick enough to allow for a decent "Gap" between two Screens. Loved the double screen board method to split a langstroth hive...will this method work for a long hive as well? Really enjoy your channel....so much info for all beekeepers!
A special design board would have to be built, but yes, it would work. Glad you enjoy watching my channel, thank you for that and your kind words. And remember, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Sandy. Mr. Ed
Good morning from central NH, where it is raining and 38 degrees. Been watching political commentaries, Thanks for saving me! I have been thinking of making up a few double screen boards to play with. Thanks for the video, peace love and patience, Brice
Hey Mr Ed, I really enjoyed your talks in New Bern. Thanks for coming and talking to us. We spoke briefly in the hallway about double screened boards. I'm going to use them for the first time this year so came back to the channel to re-watch the older video and SURPRISE you have a new video!
Great meeting you Joe and so many other beekeepers while I was in NC, it was a real joy for me to get to know so many. Glad to hear you will be trying the DSBs this year, I really think you are going to like the way they work. And if you like surprises, I post a new video every Friday. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
Good Morning Mr Ed, Janet and I sat down to have breakfast and watch your video. Janet, my wife, said to me she got it! She understands what you're doing. Another great video in the Bee Hall of Fame! You all have a wonderful weekend! God love ya!!!
If Janet can understand the process, maybe she would like to go on the road with me explaining the process. Good Time Charlie can't do that because it would interfere with his fishing. Thanks so much for watching, and I hope all is well at the Applewood Farm. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Such great content and information. I feel like I got to have my first field day to watch how splits are done! Thank you both for doing what you do, and thanks for the shout-out! Keep bee-ing your awesome selves and I look forward to seeing the updates 😄🐝🙏
Thank you Anna, delighted to be the guy leading the field day and sharing the knowledge. Stay tuned, there's a lot more fun coming up. Thank you for becoming a member, I am humbled by your gift. Until the next one, God's peace. Mr. Ed
You are very welcome Debby. It is a real joy for me to share what works very well in our apiary in the hopes it will help other beekeepers. And don't worry, we'll be making more as long as you keep watching, thank you for doing that for me. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Jeff, thank you for taking the time to educate us. I only have 6 hives here in ponchy, but you’ve given me the knowledge and courage to try some splits with double dividing boards. Only 2 were strong enough to split but this is better than letting my ladies swarm. It’s looks like spring is exploding. I’m praying for a better spring this year. Last year was rough. Glen.
Last year was a tough one for us as well, but as I am always hopeful, I look forward to the challenges this year will bring. Hang tough brother. Thanks for watching. God's peace Glen. Mr. Ed
When I first started being a Bee Steward I was putting out nice fresh water every day in clean dishes. Did the Girls appreciate my efforts? Nope. They always went for the manky water in the Wifes pot plant dishes... Turns out they don't really like clean water😆
It's the thought that counts, and I'm sure a few of them appreciated the clean water, you just never saw them. I still can't get the picture out of my mind about Charlie laying down and lapping up some of that nasty water. Thanks for watching. God's peace Phil. Mr. Ed
I learned about making splits like you do yours. I use some screen boards that look just like yours. I need to do some more. Always enjoy your videos. You take care and thanks for the information. God bless.

Great stuff, Mr. Ed I've used the double screen for a few years and enjoy having it as a tool in the yard. i enjoyed your method of using the cells, i go through a good bit more headache to transfer mine.
I find, and apparently you do as well, doubled screened boards are a great and easy way to split a hive, no expertise necessary. Best wishes for a great honey harvest this year. You two guys are something else! Good Morning Mr. Ed and Good Time Charlie! That is pretty much a good teaching video being put out today Mr. Ed. Little chilly up in these parts too! With the sun up for about an hour now, temperature is warmed to to about 20F above zero lol. Always good to see that fine warmer climate of Louisiana! I sure am going to keep on watching what you two keep on making too!! -Bob...
Wow that's a lot of work but got to love them bees I saw a few on my weeds that have the yellow flowers on them and I say to myself self it's a good thing you met Mr. Ed so let them beeeeee. God bless for all the work you do. God bless Mr Ed.
And I'm grateful to have you supporting my work and following along with all by bee wrangling adventures....even if it means there will be roaches in the video. Thank you for your blessings and for being there. Until the next one, God's pace Sherry. Mr. Ed
I’ve got drone cells on a plexiglass lid I’ve been watching. I can actually see them developing which is super cool. Not long before we will be splitting here in Oklahoma. God bless
That has to be awesome watching the cell grow, I have never seen it for myself.Great meeting you and especially for the hive tool. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
What I good time I had in NC, I thought I was royalty the way I was treated. You guys have it going on up there! Happy to do the shout out for you and VERY happy to have you as a member on the channel, thank you so much for your gift and support. I do not know which vendor was selling the shanks, but he sold out of them right after my presentation, sorry you did not get one. God's peace Steven. Mr. Ed
God bless you Jeff. This was such a great video. Give Mona a hug for me. God bless this ministry. God bless your bees and beekeepers and God bless the honey!
Great information on how to spit your box's. Always love watching your videos Mr Ed with Good Time Charlie. I have a new name for him, "Lunchtime Charlie"..LOL!! God Bless you both!!!
Thanks for the video. I was a bit confused by what you did but I think I have now figured it out. Please correct me if I am wrong. • You split if 6 or more frames of bees in top box and 6 frames in bottom box. • In first hive: • You removed all queen cells and cups from top box (because queen is there). You then put double screen board between top and bottom box. • One week later, you put top box on new stand. • In second hive: • Swarm cells present. You cut them out, removed all other queen cells, attached cut out cells to frames and put frames in the box (was bottom box) that is on new stand.
Thank you for sharing this!!! I made my first double screen board like yours by cutting the center out of an old wooden kitchen cabinet door (nice and sturdy!!) I used your technique yesterday in an over packed overwintered hive up here in Wisconsin. I noticed the upstairs gals look confused and reluctant to leave there new upstairs box. Is this typical? Thank you and God Bless!
Very as most of the remaining bees are hive bees and have not gone out foraging yet. Give them a few days and that will all change. Thank you for your blessings and for watching. Also, I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Sam. Mr. Ed

Mr Ed, what's up, hope you well. What is happening with the honey / bottle labels, you have not given us any feedback. Please also let me know if you received my label from South Africa (100% BEE). I really hope so, sent via SA postal service that is not get at all lol. Been months, bee happy GP
I still have not posted the video on the labels, but as soon as I finish our splits and setting up for the honey harvest, I will be posting it. Thank you for your patience and understanding. I'm sure I have received it as I have gotten well over 200 labels over the last year. God's peace George. Mr. Ed
Hey Mr. Ed. I loved your video, but I had one question. You mentioned that you prefer to keep the queen in the upper box when you split and have the bees make their own queen in the bottom box, but you didn't check to see if there were any eggs or larvae in the bottom box. Without checking, wouldn't that set you back weeks without knowing that there were no eggs or larvae in the bottom box?
There is the possibility of not having brood young enough in the bottom box for them not to draw out a emergency cell, but if that is the case, when I return the following week and find that situation, I grab a brood frame from the box above with young brood and try again. Yes, it cost me a week, but I'm still ok with the timing. God's peace David. Mr. Ed
Generally, it just me and Good Time Charlie getting things ready for the flow. But once the honey is in and needs processing, we have about 10 other folks there as well. Thanks for watching. God's peace Don. Mr. Ed
As the swarm cell has to be removed from the box, either the entire frame or the individual cell, adding the half inch spacer would not help. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Greetings from Bonham Texas. I know you use to have a topbar hive and was wondering if you could split the hive with a screened divider board. Got to old to lift the broodboxes so i have gone to all topbar hives. I sell out of my honey every year to my coworkers in the prison and would like to make more honey before i retire at the end of the year. Ps no prison shanks here
I do not see why that would not work. It would take a bit of modifying, but by building a top bar double screen, it would create the same scenario, two bodies of bees, one having the queen in it and the other with out one. The only thing that would be necessary to make it work properly is to have brood young enough on the queen less side in order for the bees to draw emergency cell. Let me know how it goes for you. And you are correct, with a top bar hive, no prison shanks are needed. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

Such a great video on splits and double screen board. I might just try that it looks so easy! I do have one question - did you get Charlie fed after all that hard work? Peace, brothers! - Jeff
For beginners and experts alike, screened boards are the easiest way to make a split. The only simpler way is a walk away split. Yes, Charlie got fed....he would not have it any other way. Thanks for watching. God's peace Jeff. Mr. Ed

Hey Jeff! Great video as always! Any issue with the bees eating through the fiberglass screen? Or are they not on the hive long enough to give them the opportunity?
Hey Ashby, great meeting you and your wife at NAHBE this year, I am really impressed with the work you guys are doing with your queens, and I wish you all the best in the future. As far as the fiberglass screen goes I have never had the bees chew throw it. One thing I have learned is the screen has to go all the way to the edge of the board and the box edge sit on it as that is the only way to prevent bees from going under the screen and getting trapped between the two layers. Great hearing from you and I look forward to more correspondences. By the way, I'm a new subscriber. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
No I do not monitor my queens. As all of our hives are gotten from cut out, their genetic origin is unknown. The only quality of bees I'm interested in are the ones that can keep themselves alive on their own, and so in our yards it is survival of the fittest. Thanks for watching. God's peace Benjamin. Mr. Ed
That video is coming up very soon. Since I have been so busy with speaking at conferences and now doing splits, I have not gotten around to it. But I promise, it is on my list of things to do. Thank you for your blessings and for watching. God's peace Terry. Mr. Ed
Wow. Honestly, you're not that far ahead of us in SW Ohio. We're just having 70's, 40's 60's, 50's, 70's, 30's. Snow. It's nuts. Queens are laying fast and hard. And silver maples are just in bloom.
I do not know it's real name. Maybe a hive body separator? Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. The problem is there is no new entrance using a inner cover for the dividing board. If you can make an entrance, it should work, but if you go through all that trouble, why not make one similar to the one I made? By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Wilma. Mr. Ed
Queens are marked with a certain color each year, Will You Raise Good Bees This is a mnemonic phase to remember the sequence. Years ending in Will = White 1, 6. You=Yellow 2, 7. Raise=Red 3, 8. Good=Green 4, 9. Bees =Blue 5, 0. So please follow this code Jeff and mark your queens or boxes…. For feral Bees in California I started a trend to mark them hot pink 😂. Feral any year HOT PINK I can send you a couple pink markers as your bees always run a little HOT.
Charlie was born and raised in Opelousas so I guess you and him must be cousins? Hey, thanks so much for becoming a member to my channel, your extra support is greatly appreciated, and I'll see if Charlie can pull your name for the million dollar give away...that way you can buy a few hives. Thanks again for the support and for watching. Until the next one, God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
You could do it that way for sure, and I highly recommend that you do, but it has been my experience that the amount of time it takes to make sure there is brood young enough to make an emergency cell, compared to the times there is not, the percentage does not work out in favor of not having young enough brood in the box. Therefore, I no longer check to make sure, and with over 150 hives to go through, that is a lot of time saved for me. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace. Mr. Ed

For amusement only.... it is June 21 . It is 38 degrees F outside. 7 am. SW BC CANADA Clear blue sky. It is not fair the weather you guys get 9 months of the year we get for 60 days and somehow the bees still manage to make all their honey and more. It defies any kind of logic I have read about.
That isn't good to get stung on the noise. I got stung on the noise about 2 years ago buy a yellow jacket. And that is really painful. Don't know witch one hurts the most. I end up using my mud on the stinge it pulls the Poison out quickly.
Boy you sure can tell when bees are upset. That poor camera took more hits than you boys combined! I always heard if you were gonna move a hive you had to move it at least a mile. Obviously that's not true as I see you splittin hives & moving one box right next door to the other one. Where'd that tale come from anyway?
Bees just can't stand the camera...or it could be Charlie. No, for whatever reason, bees will attack the camera, especially if they get worked up, and in this instance they were. It's a different story about moving hives or moving a split. Splits matter not where you place them, it will be ok. However, a hive either needs to be blocked up before moving and left closed for at least 2 days if moving it less than about 2 miles from it's original site. If moving the hive more than 2 miles away, after closing it off, they can be allowed to fly as soon as the box is set up in it's new location. Thanks for watching. God's peace Carole. Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff Could you correct my reasoning on this if you have a minute? So the splits are ok to move next door because all the field bees will return to the box that doesn't have the queen anyway right? And the newly hatched brood in the split (where the queen is) will automatically orient to the spot where that split box is. But if you move the whole hive, when the bees leave the box (after being orientated to the original place of the hive) they're going to automatically return to where the hive WAS rather than the new spot if it's close by. Is that the reason you close up the box for a couple of days, to force them into doing orientation flights again in their new spot if it's closer than 2 miles or so? Why do they know to do that if you place the hive more than two miles away? Do you have to keep them holed up in their hive for a couple of days even when you move it further than 2 miles or not, and if not why do they know to reorient then when they didn't know to reorient when their his was placed closer? Sorry if this is too tedious to answer. I'll totally understand if you don't respond and just keep watching to learn more. Thanks!
I make a lot of mistakes, but fortunately the bees can correct them and move on. Judging from the health and number of our bees in our colonies, I'd say they are doing a great job of overcoming my mistakes. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Thomas. Mr. Ed

By doing Splits via the Demarre Method : you don't need so much Equipment re Hive Boxes.
🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
Happy Beekeeping 2024
🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
A Demarre Board is easy to make : use any Timber that is thick enough to allow for a decent "Gap" between two Screens. I use fairly cheap Garden Windbreak Plastic Mesh about £2 a Metre.
($2.50 Yard kind of. . . 😉)
So as cheap as chips Since each Screen doesnt need a huge bit !

Good morning from central NH, where it is raining and 38 degrees. Been watching political commentaries, Thanks for saving me! I have been thinking of making up a few double screen boards to play with. Thanks for the video, peace love and patience, Brice
Get busy with them boards, you won't bee sorry. Looking forward to speaking with you guys real soon. God's peace Brice.

How funny and she said no, she will pass. We love Charlie, too. Everything is wonderful here.
Such great content and information. I feel like I got to have my first field day to watch how splits are done! Thank you both for doing what you do, and thanks for the shout-out! Keep bee-ing your awesome selves and I look forward to seeing the updates 😄🐝🙏

This channel only gets better!😊
Get out of the comments and make another.. ha ha!🫠

Mr Edddddd How are you. Hope you are doing amazing. Always love watching your great video. Hope to see you soon.
Thanks for the video.
I was a bit confused by what you did but I think I have now figured it out.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
• You split if 6 or more frames of bees in top box and 6 frames in bottom box.
• In first hive:
• You removed all queen cells and cups from top box (because queen is there). You then put double screen board between top and bottom box.
• One week later, you put top box on new stand.
• In second hive:
• Swarm cells present. You cut them out, removed all other queen cells, attached cut out cells to frames and put frames in the box (was bottom box) that is on new stand.
That's it, and next weeks video will show what happens 7 days after the board was installed. Thanks for watching. God's peace Vlad.
Mr. Ed

Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff Thanks for the reply, looking forward to seeing you video on labels
Hi mr Edd.
Thank you.
Hey Mr.
Mr. Ed
When do you find time to sleep.?
How many people in your crew during the honey flow.?
That man is a one man band! He's got the good Lord backing with strength of a Super man!!!😅
Generally, it just me and Good Time Charlie getting things ready for the flow. But once the honey is in and needs processing, we have about 10 other folks there as well. Thanks for watching. God's peace Don.
Mr. Ed
You need to give Charlie a raise!
Great video.
Thought: if you built a 1/2" rim arround the top edge of the double screen then there would be space for the Queen cells not to have to be scraped off
As the swarm cell has to be removed from the box, either the entire frame or the individual cell, adding the half inch spacer would not help.

Hi Mr. Ed and Charlie. Did you rotate boxes this year? I'm thinking about skipping this step next year.
I did not rotate our hives, and I have not done so in 4 years now. I find the step is not necessary, but that is just my opinion.

Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff Sure was great meeting you at NAHBE! Thanks for the tips about the screen! I look forward to hearing from you!
do you monitor your queens for a selection and what are the criteria for a split?
No I do not monitor my queens. As all of our hives are gotten from cut out, their genetic origin is unknown. The only quality of bees I'm interested in are the ones that can keep themselves alive on their own, and so in our yards it is survival of the fittest. Thanks for watching. God's peace Benjamin.

Do you think I can just take a inner cover and do the screen on both sides and use it as doble screen dividing board?
The problem is there is no new entrance using a inner cover for the dividing board. If you can make an entrance, it should work, but if you go through all that trouble, why not make one similar to the one I made? Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. Queens are marked with a certain color each year,
Will You Raise Good Bees
This is a mnemonic phase to remember the sequence.
Years ending in
Will = White 1, 6.
You=Yellow 2, 7.
Raise=Red 3, 8.
Good=Green 4, 9.
Bees =Blue 5, 0.
So please follow this code Jeff and mark your queens or boxes….
For feral Bees in California I started a trend to mark them hot pink 😂.
Feral any year HOT PINK
I can send you a couple pink markers as your bees always run a little HOT.

@@stevenaamos I wish the bayou was back on its feet. I moved from there to Raceland after the storm.
Seems to me you would look at each box to make sure you have young enough brood in each box ?
You could do it that way for sure, and I highly recommend that you do, but it has been my experience that the amount of time it takes to make sure there is brood young enough to make an emergency cell, compared to the times there is not, the percentage does not work out in favor of not having young enough brood in the box. Therefore, I no longer check to make sure, and with over 150 hives to go through, that is a lot of time saved for me. That isn't good to get stung on the noise. I got stung on the noise about 2 years ago buy a yellow jacket. And that is really painful. Don't know witch one hurts the most. I end up using my mud on the stinge it pulls the Poison out quickly.
😂😂😂lol
You need to make Charlie work harder. His jacket is way too clean!
Thanks!
U guy's need therapy just saying 36:17 😊
What beekeeper does not? God's peace Thomas.

I think biggest mistake u make u don't allow proper bee space between boxes result hardly any bridge comb
