I once had a lady order a pina colada and ask for no ice. I explained everything to her, but she didn't care so i was like "okay, whatever". As i added the ice to the boston shaker she was like "NO ICE!". I told her that i would serve it without ice but i needed to shake with ice to make it cold, and also so mix the ingredients with vastly different viscosities (the rum, the pineapple, the coconut cream also need to be emulsified because they are alcohol, water, and oil based liquids respectively, that don't mix normally). She wouldn't accept it, so i just stirred hers. Her husbands came out beautifully, and hers looked like half a glass of pineapple juice with weird fat blobs floating on top from the coconut cream and a banana leaf floating like a dead fish. I could see she wanted to say something about her drink being so shit, but she didn't want to admit she was wrong and just drank it anyway 😂

Absolutely, trying to explain this to people is such a hassle because they always think I am trying to scam them or defend the usage of ice. People need to start trying to make cocktails themselves, and then they will understand the importance of ice.
It's not only the importance of ice, sure ice matters and all, but it is also used to lower the cost in some way. It's not hard to do most drink while adding less ice and filling it up more, but the price would rise too.
True... but to be honest when I make myself a drink it is empty far too quick to worry about something like that.
The difference in is, when I pay 12$ for a drink I will take my time and for that I sure hope there is enough ice so it won't dilute so quickly...
@Kryyto If you do not have access to cold spirits, as in just room temperature on the shelf, then you can only serve warm drinks, which just sucks.
You also lose access to a lot of styles where ice is important in oxidizing while shaking or to layer foam on top of drinks by pouring onto the ice (Yes, you can use a spoon). You also can't make drinks with crushed ice without ice. You also need specific glassware so that it just doesn't look stupid
You are still scamming them with giving them less alcohol.

I think the issue stems from cold drinks in stores like McDonald's, where they literally fill your glass with so much ice that you can't even move the straw. If you ask for no ice in these restaurants, they do have to fill it up with coke( or drink of your choice) instead, so people are probably projecting the same thing to cocktails

It is not like you get what you paid for everywhere you go.
You feel ripped off because the ingredients (water in form of ice cubes ) is too cheap for what you paid....
If you pay 10$ for a drink with ingredients not even worth 2$ why shouldn't you expect getting more
In one bar I paid 6$ for a "glass of whiskey" with a bottle price of 15$, it is not like they lose out if they give ya a little more....😅

Compare it with a fast food restaurant if you are more happy with that.
At a restaurant I worked at in college we used to sell 22 ounce mixed drinks. They were sugary as all hell and overpriced but people loved them. However, there was only about 2.5-3.5 ounces of liquor in there (can’t remember the exact amount but still a steep pour). People would always ask for “light ice” or “no ice” thinking we would then be forced to fill up the difference with liquor. It’s staggering how many people had this misconception.
There will never be a loophole in a restaurant/bar where you “beat” them. Want to pay less for alcohol? Find a spirit you agree with enough that you can drink the bottom shelf version of that with a simple mixer as opposed to some dolled up fruity house special. A double house gin and tonic or a double house tequila sunrise or a double whiskey coke is gonna be a better deal than any speciality drink. But “no ice” just gets you a warm drink lol
Add the fact that many countries even have laws where you need to make a % profit per ounce of liquour sold or it would be deemed illegal. You get what you pay for, if you only wanna get hammered then buy shots or high alochol cheap wines.. Drinks are tasty, and you need ice to make them so.
I have a friend who worked as a bartender in a get drugnk af wine bar. The most popular drink was wine from tap with ice. They would overfill glasses with ice. Customer would pay 2dl of wine but they would get 1.5dl. At the end of the day, since it is measured on volume and not on unit, bartenders would stash hefty amount of money. Scaming both customers and owner.

I'm a hobbyist bartender and have had duscussions with my friends about this soooo many times! I also just hate the use of the word "scam"; Even if you think it's overpriced, in what way are being scammed when you get exactly what is described on the menu?
Not an exact scam in my opinion, but it's a bit unfair like deceptive packaging that cover empty space to trick you. Techniclly you have a mass on a package but still this sort of tricks ain't feel right. Same with drinks, why can't you just use a smaller glasses that mach amount of liquor u are selling? Because bars want's to trick client that his drink is huge by using big glass and filling it with lot of ice. Technically you got ammount you paid for, but still, it ain't feel right for me.
I mean not every bar and I got it that you still need to put enough ice into a drink to make it right, but in many cases I'm sure that drinks would be same as good in a smaller glass with a smaller amount of ice.

Vlad is absolutely right. You *could* get more alcohol but that also messes with the ratio, the price tag and the temperature of the drink over time. Yeah, you could definitely just slam the drink and not have to worry about the temperature at all but that's not how everyone drinks. Some people like to sit with it and enjoy it as they socialize instead of blowing through their wallet to get ten drinks over the span of an hour. And if you think that drinks are too expensive and that you could make six of them yourself for a fraction of the price of two drinks, congratulations, you've discovered how businesses work. They have to upcharge you to stay afloat. That's simply how the world works.
And yeah, you've probably been scammed once or twice by a business and some places do definitely overprice their drinks and service but that doesn't mean you're always being scammed by bars and restaurants.

I had a customer ask for a mojito with no crushed ice and i flat out refused.
Crushed ice as importantly to a mojito as the rum and mint. Otherwise it's literally just sugary rum with lime wedges and mint leaves floating which, without the crushed ice, you WILL swallow because the loose mint will block the straw.
What happens if you swallow mint leaves?

I always hate people who goes to a bar, orders a cocktail, and expected to get plastered.
It's like arguing that you're going to a restaurant, offered food on a somewhat larger plate, and call it a scam because the food isn't filling every surface of the plate
For people who want to taste alcohol, don't go to a bar and order a cocktail... Ask for shots
And if your goal is to get drunk, don't go to a bar. Full stop
Just buy a bottle of liquor, go home and make shots at the comfort of your own home... Being drunk at a bar isn't pleasant for you, for the barkeep/owner and for other patrons
If you don't have a home/place where you can be drunk comfortably, then you shouldn't be drunk in the first olace

People simply don't know how establishments work and it shows. You aren't just paying for the ingredients anyway, you're also paying for the mixing itself, the service and the utility fees that come with owning a business. If these establishments like bars, restaurants and cafes are scamming everyone so often, how come so many of them go out of business?
@@Charziken909 That's because you aren't just paying for the drink. Bars, restaurants and cafes need to pay their staff and the bills associated with actually owning a physical location and utility fees. And that's just to break even. These businesses also need to make a profit at the end of the day which is extremely difficult and that's why so many places go out of business despite upcharging their customers which is a great shame. For the customer it does often feel like a scam to pay such a heavy fee, I agree, but most of the time it really isn't.
But good on you for making your own drinks! Anyone who thinks it isn't worth the price of going to a bar and buying drinks should do the same as you but they also need to understand what the mechanics behind the price tag are.
Ignore them. There will always be people that don't understand they are not at the corner street buying a bottle of alcohol, they buy a cocktail (drink). The rest of us will just enjoy the show the bartender performs and respect the mastery over his craft.
Ice is both practical and just generally aesthetically pleasing 🙏

Thank you for addressing this. I despise the idiots online who go on about this and think they're being "ripped off" by ice. Just morons with no idea what they're talking about.
Ikd about the US, but in the UK, you are only legally allowed to serve a maximum of the equivalent of 2x shots of hard alcohol in one drink. So when people ask for more alcohol, i have to serve it on the side as a shot, and yes, i am charging you for that shot, otherwise the bar is literally paying you to drink because the costs of running the bar and buying the alcohol are more than what you're paying for. Almost everyone in the UK understands this, this is a uniquely American problem. What is so hard to grasp?
You'd be surprised, I worked in a cocktail bar in the UK and a good bunch of the consumers would ask for less ice because they didn't want to "water it down", or for some reason believed they'd get less alcohol from a glass of ice.
I tried to explain the science about how more ice cubes keep the drink cold and so it takes longer for the ice to melt opposed to 4 ice cubes. I also explained it's the same amount of alcohol regardless, there would just be more soft drink/juice without ice. But they thought I was trying to scam them. Some would even claw the ice out with a vengeful look in their eye because I added less ice, not apparently 'less' meant specifically 2 cubes of ice.
These are the kinds of people that just don't understand but don't want to learn from someone they see as below them.
I don't think it's a purely American thing but just a greedy or uninformed person thing. You'll find people like this everywhere in the world, unfortunately.

So, in essence, its not a scam, you're getting the same amount of alcohol each time, and if you tried to ask for more, you're paying for it because its considered a double?
Bartenders don't just give you a random amount of booze. There's specific measures of the amount of alcohol they're serving you. In the UK it's 25ml/50 for a double for example. Same with glasses of wine, either 175 or 250. It's literally the law in most places.
hell in Utah cocktails are restricted to holding only 1.5 oz of primary liquor

As a bartender this is a question that i get every single day i work, less ice more alcohol. Like you said less ice just looks not presentable. I always try and use as much ice or the correct amount of ice so that not only will it look better but it will also work with how much alcohol and mixer i am using. You can have as much alcohol and or mixer as you want with no ice but then it is gonna taste weird, bad and look horrible. If you want more alcohol you have 2 options
1. Make drinks at home and customize however much you like
2. Start sleeping with a bartender who will give you extra alcohol for no extra charge.
I have no dog in this fight, I can't stomach alcohol enough to care about how much ice is in it. I just think it's cool looking at the funny slav do tricks with my drinks

People dont seem to understand that cocktail recipes have a fixed amount of ingredients in them and that the ice quantity is not part of the recipe. So if I remove a couple of ice cubes from your drink that doesnt equal to pouring another couple ounces of expensive liquor just to fill up all the "extra space" and then charge you the EXACT same price as before 😂

Exactly this thing told me my friend who is bartender. As a beginner i try to make some cocktails keeping in mind that ice shouldn't float in the cocktail
This is the video everyone needed! I would also add that the right amount of ice and, consequently, the proportion of ice to liquid maintains the right temperature of the drink. If you do not put enough ice compared to the amount of liquid, you will make the ice melt way faster and destroy the flavor of the drink. The other way around, the right amount of ice holds the proper temperature making the ice dilute slower and keeping your drink fresh and delicious for a longer time.
Finally, some countries have extremely strict laws when it comes to the amount of alcohol served in a single drink. For example, in Scotland, you can only have a double shot max in a single serve. Then, if you want to have your drink looking and tasting good, you need to accept the amount of ice it comes with.

In Germany, it's not about the amount of ice, it's about the amount of drink you get. If you pay for a drink 0.5l you have to get 0.5l of that drink. If the bartender puts so much ice in it, that you get only 0.4l of that drink it's tax fraud. It was a spicific case where the owner did exactly this, he sold x amount of cola, but only rebought 4/5 of the amount. So the authorities said this can't be true, that you sell so much coke and only buy 80% of the total amount.
Every so often quantity matters more to me than strength, for both alcohol and even coffee. I would rather have two sips more of slightly less concentration and/or slightly more warmth. This is where i don't mind a diluted product. Thats just sometimes when im a bit dehydrated though

Not only that, but we have strict licencing laws that prevent our restaurant from selling over 50ml spirits in cocktails. I LEGALLY cannot add more alcohol to it, even if you wanted to pay more.
You can however, order an extra shot on the side, and you decide what to do with it ;)

So it's not about having to much ice in the glass, it's about having a bigger glass than the drink so that you can ice it down properly.
I'll still be asking for my sprites without ice, but at least I'll know how to appreciate a mojito when I'm old enough for one.

The only time your gonna get more good stuff with less I've is if your getting something super cheap such as a straight up pop/soda, or something along those lines where it would be maybe a half cent more money if they decrease the ice, for alcohol where the main expense for ingredients IS the alcohol it makes sense, the alcohol amount won't change

Most cocktails and basic drinks that is used often is gin and vodka. If you don't have a lot of money then try one spirit like vodka and a liqour like triple sec. You can make a lot with just these two and can make even more if you wanna try something more like lime juice and sugar sirup

Yeah, you’ll likely get better advice on Reddit or something, but as someone else said, Vodka is a good starting point. It’s a somewhat neutral flavor as long as it’s not the bottom-shelf stuff and that makes it pretty easy to mix with just about anything, even just some drinks you may have sitting around your house. Lemonade, juice, soda (sort of), syrup, sour mix, etc… the list goes on and on. A solid whiskey/bourbon or tequila would be my next pick. Make some simple syrup and you’re good to go

This is a thing at Sonic, that crunchy ice takes up over 2/3 of the weight of their 44oz drink, it only fits a medium cup of soda with the recommended portion of ice

g&t with ice: 3 oz gin, 6 oz tonic.
g&t without ice: 3 oz gin, 6 oz tonic
same amount of alchool.
If you want to really critique them, just say that for them alchool is cheap af, and they charge too much

I think i dont like ice in my drink because to the bars that i went to they put in half tonic and like 4 drops of vodka(a 2$ bottle of vodka that tastes like vomit) and the rest is ice. But i understand that may be only in my experience and good quality bars will do just like you
I dunno I suspect a lot of the people that are actually complaining about 'too much ice' have probably never ordered a drink before, or have never actually drank alcohol period.
Quantity is low, the price is double or triple. Obviously the owner needs to make money but clearly the profit are way high since its charging twice. People know this and still go to bar. So if you want to be rich. Owning a bar seems like a good way to get there

When I make my own cocktails, I really don't like to put ice in my drinks. For example, if I'm making a mixed drink with a soda base, then I'll make sure the soda is as cold as possible before adding spirits. I've never had a good experience with ice in drinks unless I drank them super quickly before they dilute.
This only applies to coffees as a rip off.

If a customer asks for less ice they should get a less taller glass. Glass will still be filled to the top and look full like a tall glass.

I once ordered a double mojito at a club because I wasn't thinking and got charged a whopping 40 fucking dollars, and it wasn't even good rum! Literally 2x the price

As a customers perspective, I cant understand why you cant keep the ratio of alcohol to drink. Is there policy or smth like that?
basically instead of thinking it in a cup, let's say you had a cocktail, at a bar and it especifically listed in your leaflet "50ml vodka, 100ml gin"
now you get a glass, and put that amount in, then you put the ice
in a cocktail, you're paying mostly for the alcohol, which is why the initial quantity of ice doesn't matter, you get the same amount

you can, but say for instance two people order the same drink, one is sensible and orders with ice, another isn't and orders without, the person will definitively notice the smaller glass and be like "hey wait a minute this is less!"
A bigger glass means more ice, more ice means the drink chills quicker and dilutes slower. I don't know what's so hard to understand.
