I actually own the 10 dollar one and it's my favorite ice cube tray. I can carry it up and down stairs without it spilling and to take one out, I just push down on one side of a cube and it slides right out.
He missed the point on the honeycomb one. Most people don't take the ice cubes out all at once, they individually take one out for a drink and this is perfect for that because you individually push the base out of each one while the others stay inside.
but... you can easily take just one icecube out of the others too? Just hold them right side up when you crack them so they don't fall out. Icecubes stay in place and you're free to just pick them up with your hands, or if you really need to, dump all at once. Never heard of a person who struggled with taking one icecube out of a normal tray The hexagon one isn't perfect either. A bunch still fell out when he turned it over so it's not like you can just hold it upsidedown and push them out one by one, because they're probably going to spill
Hey, at least you now know there's ice that fits in water bottles- I bet the really small one can do it too- and it showed you don't need to shell out 30 bucks on an ice cube tray- it looked like a bit too much work for not much payoff.
It's interesting how the most expensive is what everyone used to have long ago. I remember if my hand were a little wet, that metal ice cube tray would stick. Ouch! Great review!!
RIGHT!?!? I hated that about those old trays, they worked great though. It's prolly so expensive because metal is considered an exotic material in these days of plastic everything. They make a regular size metal tray for only 11.99 on amazon and walmart
@@bostonrailfan2427 One problem, is at least with our water, after a couple of years, the inside surfaces of the silicone trays get 'etched' by the hard water, and are no longer non stick. I'd rather have the old metal trays that last, well, forever than have to keep replacing my ice cube trays. no reason to fill up the ocean with plastic ice cube trays that no one will use once put into the recycling bin.
The hexagonal prism tray was hard to get the ice out of because it was rubber. All rubber ice trays are like that. Plus, who ever needs all the ice at the same time? It's more convenient to be able to remove one ice at a time than have all the ice fall out when you're trying to get a few pieces for a water bottle.
When he said the hexagon tray was difficult to get them all out, I laughed. Who would need that many at one time? Only for special events, but even then.
They're easy to get out if you use a little bit of brain power. After you hit the bottom on the counter, with the lid still in place, flip it upside down on the counter and push on the bottom. Flip it, take the top off and pour them out.
@@SDM17RG I imagine most people empty the ice into an ice box so they always have a supply while more freezes. Especially if you have many people in the house.
I've been wanting the retro stainless steel ice cube tray but $29 is ridiculous. The round one is the dumbest idea I've ever seen. The $1 trays are well worth the money and they are serviceable.
OMG, when I was really little they had those retro, but made of aluminum and the were stackable. The thing is easy to get the ice out. The stainless, means no plastic which can contain things from China you might not want leaching into the water. The silicone might be better.
My grandmother had several of those metal trays when I was young. Wish I would have held on to them. But I use the cheap plastic trays. I got from a grocery store I don't know 20 years ago. Got 4. Still have 4 and they make good ice cubes.
Yeah I remember them when I was a kid in the 70s the best thing about metal trays they don't trap odors as easy as the plastic one not to mention the chemicals they use the process the plastic God knows where is made at.
Shoot, I've got my grandma's old trays. They last forever. Could you tell the difference between the old ones and a brand new one? In fact, I've also got her even older ones that required a hook-like thing that released the ice, 2 cubes at a time (it works kind of similar to the handle he pulled on his metal one, but doesn't release the whole tray at once) . That said, I like my trays similar to his dollar store ones best, and am only saving the metal ones for the antique sale value someday. My hands hate the metal ones now, but I did use the metal ones until a couple years ago, when my carpal tunnel started acting up.
tdsm19 Yeah they are just reproductions Of the old-school ice cube tray’s from the 40s and 50s. My grandma had a couple from the era that she still used that were diehard and worked great.
To be fair if we kept the horrible safety standards from the first half of the 1900s, and just didn't give a shit, we could have flying cars by now. People would be crashing and exploding them, raining parts down onto the populace, but still.

I bought the cheap one dollar trays and they worked great for one summer, then they crack and become a mess. I started buying the Rubbermaid plastic trays which are 2 dollars each. I have a set that is now on its 3rd year with no cracks. I don't usually do it, but all trays will last longer if you turn them upside down and run warm water before attempting to remove the ice.
I have the cheap Rubbermaid set that came 3 to a pack. Been working great for years. My mom had Tupperware cups and ice trays from the 50's and I still have some of those cups. Lasted over 50 years.
Nice review, just about icecube trays, but they are a thing so it had to be done :-) About OXO, I work in the medical field and they design their gears for people with disabilities or lower stress on hands and joins. The ice tray seems to follow that same principle. Covered to avoid spill for people that have trouble staying stable, and zero effort emptying for the same reason. I love their product because of their mindset all about ease of use and confort. Check out the salad spinner!!!
I have pretty much OXO everything in my kitchen. Their products are all well made, well designed, perform better, and last longer than other cheaper alternatives (pricier ones too). I just cannot justify their ice cube trays at $10 each when the $3 Rubbermaid ones work just as well and are similarly easy to twist if you let them sit out a minute first.

No one in their right mind gets emotional over an ice cube tray review, but that metal contraption brought back some memories of times long gone. I can promise you Mamaw and Papaw never paid over 20 dollars for an ice tray. I hated that thing, I could never pop the frozen lever but I was a little girl at the time, they didn't seem to have a problem with it.
I remember the metal ice cube trays but ours were made of aluminum instead of stainless steel. I remember if you filled them too full they wouldn't work. We thought we upgraded when we got plastic trays.
*The cruel, aluminium type, would break the ice cubes into shards, that tried to slit your wrists!! Not to mention, your fingers would stay stuck to the tray, IF you touched it for more than 3 seconds,... Skin was actually left on the tray sometimes!! OUCH!! The 60's were awesome,....But, NOT those trays!!*
@@mddell58 Yeah my grandparents had the aluminium variety, you had to make sure your hands were 100% dry because its such a good heat conductor. They ended up getting rid of it after our aunt ran it though the dishwasher causing it to turn black with oxydation.
One question. Why would i want to get all of the icecubes out of there at once. The hexacomb icecubes come out easily , one at a time, without making your hands wet
I was just thinking that 😂I like the re useable ice cubes, I have pink heart plastic washable ones and I love them bc keeps my drink cold without the drastic watering down of your drink!
The metal one reminded me of the kind my parents had. They were no where near $29 but made nice consistent sized ice cubes and were much easier to get out than this one. So, I would go with the dollar store one too. Great video.
The honeycomb would actually be nice cause you do not normally take all the ice cubes out at once. If you only need a couple for your glass then you poke them out real quick and do not need to worry about all the others falling out or making a mess.
I bought a pair of silicone ice trays not long ago . . . the thing doesn't have a raised lip around the outside, so I'm always spilling when filling. And the ice chambers are using a common wall, so there's not nearly as much play to twist the thing and get them to pop out as you would think with silicone. Furthermore, the water would expand irregularly into the flexible walls, meaning that the cubes would bulge into the neighboring pockets and make removal difficult. Each cube fit into the next like a key into a lock. And - as if that weren't enough - with no void space between cubes, just the one silicone wall, there wasn't enough play in the tray to get air in behind the cubes, so they got held in by suction. I literally had to push and pull each cube out individually. I went back to my cracked, leaking dollar store tray after just one batch. :/
"you do not normally take all the ice cubes out at once. If you only need a couple for your glass" Is there a rule for how many ice cubes to take out at a time? Ice bins are made so that they can hold the ice from several batches of ice at a time. That's not going to happen if the ice isn't dumped out of the tray. And I always fill glasses with ice, not just a couple cubes.
I like the honey comb one. I rarely use all the ice cubes so having to remove one by one works fine for me, the size seems good and the shape is awesome. Price wise is okish. Still cant beat my dollar trays. so until they break I may consider the honey comb ones.
Agreed. I want to drink some juice but it's hot, i grab an ice cube tray and poor 2-4 ice cubes into the drink and i drink it. Unecessary comment but i just wanted to say this
@@stellarmetal6566 no problem, I do the same . I never seen someone use all the ice cubes in one shot, so that two to four ice cubes at a time for the honeycomb style is a good option, specially for old folks they just hit the tray on the counter and poke each ice cube individually.
I own & really like the honeycomb trays. Pressing the ice out one by one is NOT that big of a deal!!! I can press out 1 or 2 as needed or all 34 all at once. I turn it over onto the lid & press each individual bottom. When I turn it back over, I have as many cubes as I need!!! These cubes seem to increase the coldness too.
The hexagon tray is GREAT for making fruit cubes or tempered chocolate truffles as well. Very handy. Silicone is good to a high enough temp you can even bake in it at 350. Poppers!
I have jumbo ice cube trays Ifs only two and I have a round one and its only 2 I love them both I dont need that much but I think I want the hex to make fruit cubes and chocolate and it can be there when I'm to lazy to fill up the others
The oxo is great for road trips. We have a dometic freezer that sits on the top bunk in our semi truck and the no spill lid helps with the rough roads if you just filled it

Lol I remember having those as a kid. Had no fingerprints till my teens because my fingers would stick to the metal. They were aluminum I think. Plus you’d end up with maybe 2 cubes and a bunch of ice shards.
I’m not sure about icenator brand specifically but you can get identical trays that have different sized middle pieces for different sized cubes, my dad bought one for decently cheap that came with three sizes I think for $25 but it was a decent time ago
I'm in Northern Michigan, all I have to do is go outside in the winter months and my drink will stay cold lol. I think the simplest design is the best design. Others are cool but just can't go wrong with the dollar store one.
Shawn rocks on this channel, but as a fellow Michigander, I had to add this: Who needs ice trays when I have all the icicles I need hanging from my porch. Lol.
13:50 ... To be fair not every one wants all the ice out at one time, some people like to use a few cubes at a time and leave the rest in the tray and just have two trays, one for use and one for freezing while the other gets low, Silicon molds are great for that purpose since you can easily control how many you get out at a time and don't accidentally dump the entire thing onto your counter when all you wanted was 4 cubes for your drink. Between all the ones in that video if I didn't have an ice maker in my fridge I would have 2-3 of the dollar store ones and 1-2 of a silicon mold one, the 2-3 cheap ones for when I have people over and need more ice at once, then the 1-2 silicon mold ones for normal use for just myself when I want a few cubes and not a full tray. I have a pumpkin and skull shaped ice trays that are silicon that both make small cubes that work perfect, I think my sister got them from a dollar store during a Halloween. That's just personal preference, then again when I get drinks from fast food I either ask for no ice or light ice, I am not a big ice person.
Yeeees! I hate dumping the entire 20 cubes onto my counter, floor and glass and having to pick up cubes that slide to the other side of the kitchen before it will let you touch them
The stainless steel tray is one you have to know how to use. You are supposed to run water over it and then use the handle release and it will work perfectly well. By far the best of the bunch in my honest opinion. I miss that contraption of the past except the older ones were made out of aluminum. Many of the kitchen contraptions were made out of aluminum in the past.
The honeycomb one is perfect for storing excess fresh herbs. Put them in water, freeze and you always have that fresh taste available. The fact they don't come out easily is an advantage if you only want to pop out one herb. The icenator is also great if you want ice on hand to soak your feet.
If its a hot day, they'll probably melt long before they become an issue when you're drinking. Also you could always just stick your tongue in front of the hole to prevent the ice from getting into your mouth.
The silicone trays like the hexagon shaped one would empty easier if they didn't make the walls of the individual ice cube area 90 degrees. Have them angled to a little more of a "V" shape and it would help a lot. Just like the OXO and dollar store models. More angle = easier to get the cubes out of the tray.
I'm 75 and in shock that the metal on with handle is $30... OMG.. these were standard in my day and so inexpensive as to be insignificant... probably the cheapest thing in the kitchen next to metal manual can opener which are just used for camping and outrageously priced also. I guess the advent of plastic made everything metal more expensive today. But "more" shouldn't mean ridiculous. And let's talk cheap: Save a potato salad or other medium sized plastic container, fill with water and use and ice pick. Ice cubes are the cost of the ice pick. Or buy a few JackInTheBox breakfasts and save those containers that come with lids and are very stackable and thinner layers of ice to go through with the ice pick. Just sayin.
If you calculate inflation, something that costs $30 today would have cost $2 back then. So if you're thinking they where priced around $1.50 to $2 back in the day, that would be correct.
@@scarffoxandfriends9401 No, when a 5 pack of gum was 3 cents and a bottle of pop was a nickel, $1.50 or $2.00 for an ice tray would be unthinkable. Think a quarter for it if that.
@@2lmdi a quarter would translate to about $7.50, I've seen these trays for $10 to $12. But that is still more. Technically speaking stainless steal and aluminum have dropped in price, my best guess is a common tactic seen with higher grade materials. Most people don't know the price difference between plastic and metal, so stores will sell them at much higher prices then they are worth. A lot of people have this "the more it cost the better it is" mentality, so they spend more then needed. Another place this is seen is how Apple will sell a iPhone using $300 in material for $1200. People see the iPhone costs more then the other phone, so it must mean it's better, but in actuality it's the same or worse then other cheaper priced phones.
If I remember right, the old school ones were aluminum. I think aluminum would a lot cheaper than stainless steel. I don't even think stainless steel is around back then either.
@@IowaKim Stainless steel was invented some time between 1900-1915 over 100 years ago so it's possible it was made from stainless. I do believe the old trays were made of aluminum though cheaper material with great heat transfer rate.
$29 for cinder block sized ice cubes absolutely I'm sold I'm totally going to get that. not only are the cubes big enough to make something cold real quick but if you have a slingshot they make a great home defense weapon.
$4-$5 for plastic tray with lid with large cubes at tjs, marshalls, Burlington, home goods. No struggling with lever, not overpriced, has a no spill cover & no nasty silicone taste on ice like silicone trays.
Love the mini trays. Those are the ones I always end up buying. They're a perfect size to fit in water bottles, and you can add like two of them to a glass of scotch and it doesn't water it down too much. Plus they look like gum drops. Aren't you supposed to fill the middle of the ice genie or something?
Thanks for reminding me why I was so glad the cheap plastic trays came out. Metal trays could cause a lot of stressing, straining and cussing. We always had to run water over the tray, wait and then commence to fighting to get the ice out. We would put several trays in, freeze and then pop out into a bowl to keep in the freezer while the next batch was freezing. I will stick to the dolla sto cheapies.
My fourth grade teacher would do that every day lol it’s funny because he said he would try to drink a bottle of water throughout the day and as a kid that sounded like a lot but now I’m a thirsty hoe
I have (or had) the mini ice cube trays but the cubes are just too small, and it’s easy to spill trying to get them out. The honeycomb one is the most interesting, the advantage of that one is that you never have to worry about a cube being stuck, you will always be able to force it out.
Everything you have ever experienced in your entire life, every motion, every thought, every action, every emotion that you have ever felt, every choice, every tiny molecule of your existence, every breath you have taken, every sight you have ever seen, everything that you have ever been, or done, or didn't do has accumulated into that one final fateful click that brought you here. AND YOU HAVE AN AUTOMATIC ICE MAKER!
James, I totally agree that the $store ice trays give you the best bang for your buck!!! Now, let me give you a different POV...I have a disability where I am completely unable to use my left arm; hence, twisting the $store trays is pretty much impossible. I bought a fridge with an ice maker. Sadly the ice maker has been on the fritz & repairs have been short lived. I've been on a quest for the perfect "one handed" ice cube tray. After a lot of trial & error, I found the honeycomb to be very efficient & the easiest of the ones you reviewed for me to use!!! I turn the tray onto it's top, lift each end so it stretches a little. Then I take my thumb pressing every little honeycomb. Most of the time when I lift the tray, all 34 of the cubes are nestled in the tray cover. Occasionally, there is a stubborn cube & I have to press the bottom of that particular cube again. With the way the silicone stretches, I get ALL the cubes out with minimal effort. I have a 40 oz Rtic cup & I put all 34 cubes in my cup, add my beverage of choice. After replacing my lid, my drink stays cold & drinkable for the next 24 hours. I can see how this tray is frustrating for those with 2 perfectly working hands; but, for those of us physically challenged, it is a doable alternative. My biggest complaint with the honeycomb is that it's a pain in the butt to fill up!!! Now, another suggestion that I like even better. I bought 2 of the silicone egg bite trays. I fill them about 80% full, put on the lid, & pop in the freezer. They only have 6 molds but the mold is large...like 2 oz or maybe 4 oz each. The molds are large enough that it takes some extra time to freeze. They are sometimes tricky to remove but the ice looks like a large bullet & they melt slowly. I've also discovered with these that I can run some tap water over the bottom & they release easily without the ice melting. I use 4 pieces of ice in my 40 oz Rtic & it will easily last me for 24 hours. With 2 trays, I'm using one of them while the 2nd one is freezing & then I rotate the trays so I always have a frozen tray ready to be used. Since it also has a lid, I can press the ice into the lid & then put directly into my cup. Although they're not made to be an ice tray, I prefer my egg bites ice trays to the conventional trays. With the lid, they are stackable. IF you're willing to look around, they make baby food trays similar to the egg bite trays that has 9 molds. I've ordered one of them but it hasn't arrived yet. I see NO reason to believe it won't work the same!!! I thoroughly enjoy your reviews...I just have to alter my thinking to my physical challenges & you give enough info that I find that easy to do!!! You've saved me a small fortune in watching your reviews. I passed on buying the Ice Genie after seeing your initial review. Although it sounds easy to use, you had enough trouble using 2 healthy hands that I knew I couldn't use it 1-handed...THANK YOU!!!
@@Immagiraffe101 You know phones exist right? I can also type fast on my keyboard with one hand. Not because I don't have 2 arms but because I'm too lazy to get my legs of my leg rest sometimes I just type with one hand.
Problem with cheap plastic versions is that they pick up that “freezer smell” which you cannot wash out. Buy the stainless version and hand it down to your children when you pass into that great freezer in the sky… ;-)
I think there should be another couple of categories. Space should be a consideration. The hex and the OXO seem to be more slender units, but the volume to quantity should go to the hex. They are stackable and produce a good volume to space used. I'd have to get measurements to compare them to the dollar store option though. The hex also has the lid to prevent spilling, so that's a plus. The other thing to consider is the durability of the trays. I throw out about 6 of the dollar store type per year because they crack and leak. The hex seems to stay pliable even in the freezer, so they might not suffer from the material failure the hard plastic ones do. If you are concerned about plastic waste and the environment, you may want to think about this. On this point, what are they made of?! Is this a material that is worth producing for it's durability, or is it too damaging to the environment to even consider? That then brings up the OXO again. Is the fact that it just falls out of the tray going to give it a longer service life, making it more valuable? The $29 option seems to be the most durable option, but it is not stackable and will take up much more space as a result. It seems that you could hand these down to your children and grand children, but I would need to see the results of a durability test to see if $29 is worthwhile. Will metal fatigue be a factor on some of the moving parts? Just thought I should bring up some other things to keep in mind about these results.
I love the Rubbermaid ice cube trays, they make I've similar to the dollar store ice cube trays, but last much longer. The one I'm using now is 3 years old, with no signs of fatigue
Excellent points! We try to consider the impact on the environment when it comes to inexpensive purchases. You get what you pay for...typically anyway. 😏
I love the honeycomb one! I like how you can individually get them out. I hate needing only 6 ice cubes and having all 16 come out at once all over my counter.
I'm amazed that the design that existed when I was a kid and was a major pain getting ice out of is the most expensive. The plastic "twist and flip" trays were such a game changer when they came out.
most often that would be true but due to the moving parts in this case it is not. I had more than one of these style of trays and due to the water getting in-between the small areas and expanding when freezing the tray would fail.
@@penknight8532 I think you misunderstand. when I say the freezing water is a problem I mean the the freezing water actually bends and or cracks the metal due to the pressure it creates as it is freezing not from the actual use of the moving parts.
The dollar store tray works fine new. Wait for a few months it cracks and breaks. The ice starts sticking. Good luck! I would like to see update on dollar store ice cube trays

I usually just run some warm water on the bottom of the silicone ones to loosen all of them at once and it works pretty well
Exactly what I was thinking when he demonstrated it, I usually use maximum 2 ice cubes per glass ^^
Also the small size is good for not taking up space in the freezer. Not everyone has massive freezers to fit 17,000 ice cubes.

That's why you empty the trays into an ice box when done.

You can sometimes find the aluminum with steel lever *actual* antique trays at specialty antique stores.

yeah but if i'm at someone's place and they whip out a $29 metal ice tray i ain't messing with them
It's like an expensive car. You don't need it, but it will get you all the girls (or so I heard)
I grew up with those trays in the 70s, everything old is new again!
What if they have a fridge with an ice dispenser built in?
I found an old metal ice tray in my grandparents home.. omfg I LOVE IT!!!

The Rubbermaid ones can last forever. My mother haa some Rubbermaid ice cubes from the early 80s that are still being used to this day.

Nice review, just about icecube trays, but they are a thing so it had to be done :-)
About OXO, I work in the medical field and they design their gears for people with disabilities or lower stress on hands and joins. The ice tray seems to follow that same principle. Covered to avoid spill for people that have trouble staying stable, and zero effort emptying for the same reason.
I love their product because of their mindset all about ease of use and confort.
Check out the salad spinner!!!
Or just to prevent spill period, ya know
I have pretty much OXO everything in my kitchen. Their products are all well made, well designed, perform better, and last longer than other cheaper alternatives (pricier ones too). I just cannot justify their ice cube trays at $10 each when the $3 Rubbermaid ones work just as well and are similarly easy to twist if you let them sit out a minute first.
@Danielle Anderson Exactly! I came here to say the same thing. Kitchenaid is another generally dependable brand, though it's a little spendy

No one in their right mind gets emotional over an ice cube tray review, but that metal contraption brought back some memories of times long gone. I can promise you Mamaw and Papaw never paid over 20 dollars for an ice tray. I hated that thing, I could never pop the frozen lever but I was a little girl at the time, they didn't seem to have a problem with it.
and they would freeze your hands off.
And have a risk of hurting yourself.

You could say that for each one.. Also some people like emptying them all out into a container and making a lot of ice.

What an ordeal. I feel like you need a hug! :)
@@cotteeskid For me? Thanks man :)
"you do not normally take all the ice cubes out at once. If you only need a couple for your glass"
Is there a rule for how many ice cubes to take out at a time?
Ice bins are made so that they can hold the ice from several batches of ice at a time.
That's not going to happen if the ice isn't dumped out of the tray.
And I always fill glasses with ice, not just a couple cubes.
@@shawbros icebins are pretty American. In Europe, most people just only take out the icecubes they need, because there's not icebins in the fridge.

The water bottle ones sound like a good idea until it falls out and hits the back of your throat while you are drinking. That sucks.
How do you drink from a bottle?
If its a hot day, they'll probably melt long before they become an issue when you're drinking. Also you could always just stick your tongue in front of the hole to prevent the ice from getting into your mouth.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣... bet they didn't think of that
Hey, at least it’ll train your gag reflex.

The silicone trays like the hexagon shaped one would empty easier if they didn't make the walls of the individual ice cube area 90 degrees. Have them angled to a little more of a "V" shape and it would help a lot. Just like the OXO and dollar store models. More angle = easier to get the cubes out of the tray.
actually there has been an improvement on the design of the hexagon product to do simply what your are saying.

Got a video about Ice Cube trays in my recommended
...
Today is a good day ;)
I have (or had) the mini ice cube trays but the cubes are just too small, and it’s easy to spill trying to get them out.
Okay UA-cam recommendations I needed this. Yes I did.
You sure can type a lot without the use of your left arm lol
@@Immagiraffe101 or maybe has a dictating software ;)
quiltedquickerpicker doubt it, the way it’s typed wouldn’t be from that kind of thing. It definitely was typed out by someone.
@@Immagiraffe101 You know phones exist right? I can also type fast on my keyboard with one hand. Not because I don't have 2 arms but because I'm too lazy to get my legs of my leg rest sometimes I just type with one hand.
@@Immagiraffe101 Thank you...I had a lot to say!!!
Problem with cheap plastic versions is that they pick up that “freezer smell” which you cannot wash out. Buy the stainless version and hand it down to your children when you pass into that great freezer in the sky… ;-)
Ok but this is a review I never new I needed!!

I think the honeycomb one is the most interesting.
Same he only scored it less bc some cubes got stuck which isn't a problem you are usually only going to use a few cubes anyway
I love the honeycomb one! I like how you can individually get them out. I hate needing only 6 ice cubes and having all 16 come out at once all over my counter.
Its good as a specialty cooking sheet too. Works fine at 350F
The $29 design has been around for over 50 years. I remember it well from my childhood.
That Guitar riff is what you first hear when you enter Hell.
VOID DEATH ケェヲキェケ lol
I just watched a dude make ice cubes for 16 minutes.
Totally worth it 👂😎
I like the sound when you crush the ice genie, the only redeeming quality.
I'm amazed that the design that existed when I was a kid and was a major pain getting ice out of is the most expensive.
The plastic "twist and flip" trays were such a game changer when they came out.
I like the quality and durability of the steel one. That’s something that will last a lifetime.
most often that would be true but due to the moving parts in this case it is not. I had more than one of these style of trays and due to the water getting in-between the small areas and expanding when freezing the tray would fail.
@@fusionchef1 They never fail if you run water over the top and bottom of the tray and pull the lever slowly!
@@penknight8532 I think you misunderstand. when I say the freezing water is a problem I mean the the freezing water actually bends and or cracks the metal due to the pressure it creates as it is freezing not from the actual use of the moving parts.
@@fusionchef1 I have never experienced that but I will keep a look out for it...thanks for the information.
Iconator- ice cubes from the 1950s just like when I was a kid.
My MIL still used them and I could never get them out
@@kitnmom We had those metal ones and just run them under the faucet for a second and pull the handle......simple. lol cheers :)
@@kitnmom I had the same experience, My grandparents used them, and I could never pull that lever up to release the cubes.
The dollar store tray works fine new. Wait for a few months it cracks and breaks. The ice starts sticking.
Good luck!
I would like to see update on dollar store ice cube trays
i thought i was the only one who thought ice cube trays like that stopped removing with ease after a while lol.
But you can still buy 29 of them and give them a couple of months each before you justify the price of the metal one haha

I like my freezer ice maker for $30.00
Even though my trays i got at the dollar store have cracked a bit I've been using them for a LONG time I got them when I first moved to Canada back in 2001!
