Well done Dave. Amazing work for finding out the leak cause and fixing it. Just don't cut yourself with chainsaw cutting too close to your limbs. That slip was terrifying.

You can use the pythagorean therium when installing a cricket as well unless you have to flip the board. Measure all three lengths on lengths on a plumb line. Mark with a pencil with a half moon on your plywood to find the beveled edge where your measurements intersect. I like the bevel though I will have to add one to my tool collection
I have never had a remodel cricket, dormer, or hip-and-valley roof come out with symmetrical angles and measurements. They’re always just slightly off like that. It’s the nature of wood framing, especially working on something that’s had years to settle.
Reminds me of a UA-camr who pulled on a bowed garage wall with a rope and a truck one time. Turns out buildings are a lot more flexible than we expect 😉

You were leaking, because you didn't have any counter-flashing, but you had caulking on that brown flashing.
Nice job! Noticed that you weren't tied off when you slipped, just a note for pros, we had a sub get a $25k fine for each man not tied off
At around 11:30 couldn't you have replaced your red level with the 2×4 and used another 2×4 to make the angle cuts? Also how did you find the bevel angle again?

I think I would have peeled the underlayment back to see if I could find the leak just for curiosity. So, did the cricket solve the leak?

The only thing that bothers me is using your leg to hold the wood while you cut. Its a quick way to cut the major muscle in the top of your thigh and that's a huge medical expense sewing that all back up. I seen a guy that happened to, it wasn't pretty. But other than that, good job and thanks for the tips. We have to build a cricket to stop the water from soaking into the brick mortar and turning our fireplace into a humidifier. Good job on the harness also!!

It would of been easier and cheaper to make a sheet metal saddle with a 6” cricket for a $100 dollars.

Yes you don’t need a cricket When it’s a small.

@@jerryjenkins6071 I agree, whenever I meet a chimeny wider than 24 inches I do frame it.
The water is leaking through the mortar. Chimneys that dont get sealed over time will wick water through the grout. Just my opinion not an expert
