    Small tips, always shingle the cricket first, stay away from the valley 8 inches for nailing, go back up there run a bead of black jack under the valley on both sides, run a bead of black jack over the top of the foil, you did a good job for roofing this as a dyi, I watched the video for building the cricket, all round good job and if it starts too leak again inspect the top of the chimney, alot of times when it rains water sits on top of the chimney and makes it way in, cock the fire walls that come out and if it keeps leaking grab some concrete and a bottle of bond and smear it on the sides and make a stucco looks then spray paint 🎨

      I was thinking the same thing. The cricket is supposed to be shingled first😅

      That’s crazy a cricket needs twice as much slope as the roof deck giving rain twice the velocity in any roofing system with posative water flow.

    you should take a grinder and cut a curf cut in the chimney about 3/4 inch deep, for cap flashing (one long piece) to go overtop the step flashing. After you cap flash, pack the cut with lead wool (like the old timers do) or just fill it with caulk. Some will use individual pieces of cap flashing, but that's easier to do while laying the brick, as they go into the motor joint area.

    So after you repaired the chimney how much should a roofer make a day? Btw most roofers would have done that in the most 1 day at the most. You should have either cut your counter flashing into the bricks first or used termination bar . or made the entire cricket out of metal. Lots of different ways to go. As long as it don't leak I can't see it from my house. Old roofer joke, lol .

    I can guarantee you your original flashing was done properly and you touched on the point in your cricket video why your original flashing was leaking. Yes you need to run you tar paper under the old tar paper and flash your metal in with ice and water or something like that seal and stick if this makes sense. You pay attention to details very well, this was great work by industry standard. Don’t be afraid to use black jack everywhere possible while keeping it neat. Great video.
    However, it would only last as long as the metal could hold up to weathering/rust/holes. Maybe you could have used valley metal with your cricket it is about big enough then you would have minded the rule of not nailing within 8” of valley.
    This is tuff. Never build a chimney and the drip edge always a problem over time.

    For your first time you did good. Those step flashings rust fast I can tell it’s the cheap aluminum ones not the metal ones. You ran the valley wrong way too. Water will get under Those shingles u nailed

      Yeah I'm wondering the right way to shingle the valley because it's definitely wrong. The water running down the roof will go right under the shingles on the cricket. It at very least needs valley flashing under the main roof's shingles.

    U did right shingleing the Cricket 1st.
    There 2 things I didn't see u do is 1, U didn't Tar (Black Jack) under your shingles running into the flashing, 2, the flashing should of been cut into the Brick the Caulked or something simular.
    Myself, I would of ran 1 solid piece of Flashing instead of the stair stepping the pieces.

    Sorry, I've yet to watch part 3, although I will tomorrow. I just had to comment about all of the negative comments. Some of them sound like they are from "professionals". As someone who has had their roof "repaired" by a "professional" and now am repairing their own roof, I applaud you. Have you done any worse than they might have done? I think not. They failed at repairing my roof and now I feel I can't do any worse. I would rather try and fail at a much lesser cost than have them try and fail after paying them a lot of money. I'm just saying. Thank you for the video. Best of luck to you, I hope part 3 tells me you succeeded.

    The water running down the roof will go right under the shingles on the cricket, it at least needs valley flashing under the shingles but I'm not a roofer so I don't know the best way to shingle and flash that valley.

    • @FamilyFriendlyDIY
      @FamilyFriendlyDIY  Рік тому

      Yes, I really should’ve reversed the way I roofed it. Thankfully there are no leaks. I tried to find the code on which side gets roof first, and I don’t think there is one, but if somebody can point it out that would be great. However, it does appear most roofers roof the little roof first, and have the bigger roof shed on top of it. Thanks for the comment!

      @@FamilyFriendlyDIY If you're still looking, I watch Grand Roofing, he knows his stuff. He shows how to shingle that type of valley around the 17 minute mark of this video:ua-cam.com/video/mN_WBOBqRoE/v-deo.html. I wouldn't hesitate to do it the way he does, I have watched a lot of his videos and he always has a good reason to do it a certain way.

      The shingle from the cricket should go cross first or am I wrong?

    • @FamilyFriendlyDIY
      @FamilyFriendlyDIY  3 роки тому

      @@wilbersandoval9682 That’s typically how it’s done, but building code is to follow the shingle manufacturer’s instructions, and mine didn’t have a preference. That said, if I were to do it again I would shingle the cricket first. I do think it’s probably a little less likely to leak and would look better. But supposedly as long as you follow the valley instructions in the shingle installation guide, it shouldn’t week either way.

    Looks like something we laugh at before fixing.
    -Cricket way to big
    - cut valley ran backwards
    - nails in valley
    - shingles don’t cross valley center line far enough
    -Courses not ran straight
    - valley cut is janky
    -didn’t cut in step flashing
    -didn’t tie felt into roof properly
    Could probably list more but stopped watching lol

    Easy and cheap that's what every customer wants to hear. Easy cheap leaks, Why did the plywood not meet at any of the edges. There are better ways to do this, so why not do it that way. So here you self incriminate the whole job being a mishap and you still leave the video up after a few years, why?
