Nah, this is Ronnie, his younger brother took over years later (Johnny). Get this the middle brother is Donnie Van Zant, singer, songwriter, and guitarist of the band 38 Special, check them out.
They are known for their hit songs, including "Hold On Loosely" and "Caught Up in You", among various other Top 40 hits on the US Billboard Hot 100 during the 1980s and early 1990s, including "Rockin' into the Night", "You Keep Runnin' Away", "If I'd Been the One", "Back Where You Belong", "Teacher, Teacher", "Like No Other Night", "Second Chance" and "The Sound of Your Voice".
Met Johnnv, briefly. He was getting in shape for the first "Reunion" tour. He was great!
Ronnie died 1977 and Johnny took over in 1987 at the 10 year reunion tour that started at the CDB Vol Jam

The plane crash was about 45minutes from me in Ms.. I was at the movie theater when it happened I was 13 at the time.

This is original Skynyrd. That is Ronnie singing, Allen, Steve, and Gary on guitar, Leon on bass, Billy on piano, and Artimus playing drums. Best group ever.
The Singer was Ronnie Van Zant . He was the GOAT of frontmen ! The dude playing the slide guitar next to Ronnie was Gary Rossington . He was using an old ,old asprin bottle (Corasiden) to make the bird chirps and slide along with Ronnie's voice . Allen Collins was the maniac with the crazy hair in all white who went nuts at the end who really invented this song . 3 people on that stage were killed in the plane crash 3 months later including Ronnie .
Met Allen Collins in the Café of a JAX hospital late one night. I was on my lunch break with friends, and he was alone, worried, and stressing. Just a very polite man who needed to vent. We all talked for about 45 minutes, then showed him to the Chapel for privacy. Didn't need or ask for anything from him, just thankful to be returning a favor. ❤😢❤

Ed was great in studio ,but was in background live .Gary also seemed a bit on the shy side . Steve was a showman for sure and close to Allen ,but Collins was just explosive on stage and his timing always perfect . JMO .

Not technically the originals, but this is the last lineup before the crash. Some people get really testy about who is or isn't actually original. I separate them into Ronnie era or cover band. This is my favorite lineup of Ronnie era.

@@Pokafalva No, the originals were Ronnie, Gary, Allen, Bob Burns (drums) and Larry Junstrom (bass). Leon replaced Larry, then Ed replaced Leon. Leon came back and Ed went to 3rd guitar.
This is one of those songs that should be required listening for anyone with even a mild interest in rock & roll, and this live version is one of the best in all of the "live" genre. If not for video footage, it may have been lost to time and maybe not even believed, as this performance is just mind blowing.
The finest live performance of any band or song that I've ever witnessed, be it in person or on video.

The icing on the cake was when Ronnie walked onto the (Rolling Stones) tongue portion of the stage, and called Rossington, Collins, Gaines and Wilkeson over to join him. I say this because Mick Jagger had warned the other bands to not go onto the tongue area.
For a VERY cheap ticket price (a few bucks, usually!), we spent the best years of our lives watching absolute LEGENDS perform for us!! I feel blessed to have these memories & to count Skynyrd & other greats among those who made up the soundtrack of my youth. There will never be another time like that again.

I was right there standing on that stage that day. Met those guys in Atlanta in the early 70,s , and from that time on we all were like brothers. Now they've all gone to that great concert in heaven, I truly miss each one of them. October 1977 was a very sad and heartbreaking time for the fans, friends, and family's of those that lost their lives that day. Ohh how I wish I could play one more time with all those guy's.

Actually the drummer in this video Artimus Pyleis still alive and Gary Rossington just died last year.
@@sharonhoyt2133 Artimus isn't the original drummer but I know Artimus. Gary lived about fifteen miles from me we talked at least once a week, now that he's gone I still talk with Dale.

Johnny was only 16 when Ronnie died. Gary Rossington playing the slide guitar in the beginning, and then Allen Collins shredding on the last half. With Steve Gaines on guitar as well, Leon Wilkeson on bass, Artimus Powell on drums, and Billy Powell on the piano.
Skynyrd was different, there live shows are bad@$$. Never to be duplicated.

Allen Collins, was the guitar player in all white, long hair. Steve Gaines was the other guitarist playing with Allen in the end, tragically he left us when the plane crashed too, along with his sister Cassie Gaines, who was a backup singer for the band

I guess I'll make my first comment on your channel. I was there for most of The Day on the Green concerts in Oakland and this one.The lineup that day was The Outlaws, Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and then Peter Frampton. That is why all girls were packed in front of the stage.
Thanks for that bit of info, wondered why there were so many girls. Went to lots of rock concerts in the 80’s and never saw a ratio like that.

My first concert ever, 1977 Skynyrd at the Long Beach Arena, CA. They finished the concert with this song, as usual, and they were absolutely electrifying. They set the standard for me, for what a concert should be like! And yes, those Grandmas are still hot to me!
This video is a great example of why its important to watch live performances. Seeing music being made, who is doing what and how hyped the crowds get . It's refreshing to know people like you will keep thus music alive for generations to come. I love your energy

I was there bro! Even saw myself in that video… a sea oh humanity. The best closing song in music history. Skynyrd played before Peter Frampton that day. Ronnie Van Zandt was singing… that was 3 months before the plane crash that killed him 😢. Have been lucky to see them 20 times in the last 46 years 🤩

Gary Rossington is the guitarist you're impressed with so far. He's playing slide on his guitar. If you look close, you can see a clear plastic tube on his finger and he drags that down to make the notes stretch out. He was the last founding member to die maybe 6-8 months ago. My favorite is Allen Collins, all in white but he stands back until it's solo time.

I read that alot of the girls in the crowd were really there to see PETER FRAMPTON who was the next band to play. you need to watch him do BABY I LOVE YOUR WAYS LIVE from same concert !! also remember back then the fans never got to see their idols in person at all, and there was no TV of concerts , of them playing or youtube only the record ,LP cover photos ,so when you finally got to see them at a concert it was like once in a life time event ! very very SPECIAL !

When you watch that again, pay attention to the guitarist behind RONNIE. He blends in finishing Ronnie's lyric. Amazing the little details they used.
One thing to consider about Lynyrd Skynyrd is their backyard of Jacksonville, Florida.
They grew up around a wide assortment of various bands in the area, and like all bands they
competed with one another, but were also there for one another if need be.
And most if not all of them were dirt arse poor.
This attitude helped develop the Southern Rock scene from a small area of the country.
As they would often play with one another, if they were short a band member.
An example of this can be heard in the band "Blackfoot", which was founded by a native American
born in the area, Rick Medlocke, who of course is of the Blackfoot tribe.
After the plane crash Blackfoot released their "Strikes" album, the song "Highway Song" was dedicated
to the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd who were killed on the plane crash.
If one listens to the song, you get the Lynyrd Skynyrd vibe for sure.
Later Rick Medlocke, became one of the guitarists for the revamped Lynyrd Skynyrd.
And when the band was being attacked for displaying the "Flag of the army of northern Virginia",
thus an attempt by media to brand them as racists, Medlocke pointed out, growing up & interacting
with members of Lynyrd Skynrd, he had no doubt that none of them were racist in any way.
Citing "Look I'm a native American, I'm a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, do you really think I would be playing
with them if they were racist?"
And while the band stated the displaying of the flag was purely a heritage pride display, they also understood
how it was hijacked & stolen by a type of people they don't associate with.
That part of us history exists, & have made the choice to no longer display the flag.
Their last concert, Johnny Van Zant drapped a U.S. flag over the microphone.
You should react to Chicago 25 or 26 to 4 live at tanglewood 1970 it has One of the greatest live guitar solos by Terry Kath rest in peace and amazing horn section
Gary Rossington is the guitarist standing behind Ronnie Vanzant (not Johnny Vanzant, younger brother that took over) when Ronnie left us a few months later in a plane crash
As, you stated this was exceptional. This was one of their all time best performances. Solid talent & beautiful.
And the then-kid behind Ronnie (the lead singer) on slide guitar just very recently passed away. You can see the video on youtube of him performing this song for the last time. Such a tragic history for this band. But they certainly aren't the only ones.

I was at this concert. We drove down from Humboldt Co. Im pushing 70, and this is one of my favorite memories. Pot was flowing and it was a hot sunny day. I'm so glad I can see this 40 years later. Thank you!!

This song was my intro to Rock -n- Roll when I was 8 years old. Heard it on a little hand held AM band radio. My buddy and I were blown away. Sweet memories. Eventually I went heavy with Sabbath and Maiden. But I still love this music genre, Skynyrd, SRV, ZZ. I'm getting old now and my days of sin are over. I stick with Jesus. Still love to hear these tunes once in a while though. Gets the blood bumping.

This was "Day On The Green", Billy Graham presents at Oakland Coliseum. I had just graduated from high school and a bunch of us piled in a van and saw this concert, among many at the same venue...Love, Love Love Lynyrd Skynrd!
Forby Leonard Skinner (January 11, 1933 - September 20, 2010) was a high school teacher in which Lynyrd Skynyrd; Skinner was the band members' teacher.
They executed "drop the mic" before I think it was a term, and it was well-deserved.
That was Ronnie on the lead vocal. It took him awhile to sort out how the lyrics would compose with the music but when he did the rest was history! Allen Collins composed the musical beat to the song. Adding Billy Powell to the piano for this made this even bigger imo. Powell was actually a roadie for the band & when they discovered his talents it made this more legendary imo

This was in 1977, one of the 'Concert On The Green' series they had that summer. All the girls are probably there for Peter Frampton who was also there along with Santana and I think the Outlaws. Peter's 'Frampton Comes Alive' album was huge back then.

I saw them the next day in Oklahoma at Willie's 4th of July picnic. They were in the plane crash that fall, so was a real treat. That place was messed up with drunk singers and crowd but a whole lot of fun in Oklahoma and it was hotter than hell, LOL. The only Willie's picnic that was held outside of Texas was on July 3, 1977 in Tulsa. You see a sea full of healthy bodies out there...especially California, but all of us were pretty hot back then in our crop tops and shorts and this is how we got to see our bands was in concerts. And this is Ronnie singing. Wish they would have gotten some videos in Tulsa, I think I've mostly seen photos online. Would be fun for some of these people to see themselves on video now wouldn't it?

Being there was free and easy. No cameras, no phones, and obviously no sunscreen in those days! We just partied and listened to the other bands too. Peter Frampton and Santana were the other two bands who played that day. Great day of memories to last a lifetime. No pics or recordings are needed. It is in our souls.

I recommend watching “If I Leave Here Tomorrow” - a documentary about the band that is the best rock documentary I’ve ever seen. It traces Lynyrd Skynyrd’s rags-to-riches struggle to become a super band. Clocking in at under 90 minutes, the film had me laughing, crying, laughing, crying as it alternates the backstory of these high school pals with news footage of the crash coverage. It was like the band members came into my living room with their stories, photo albums, scrapbooks, home movies and personal calendars, and in the end reminded me of friends I grew up with. It had so many surprising, fascinating details I had never known despite having grown up listening to this band.
This was our background noise for life. So many pivotal moments in so many lives. Generational music.

They continued to tour and record with co-founder Rossington, Johnny Van Zant, and Rickey Medlocke, who first wrote and recorded with the band from 1971 to 1972 before his return in 1996. Over the years, other founding members of the band have died either during-or after-their time in the band. In January 2018, Lynyrd Skynyrd announced its farewell tour,[3] and continued touring until 2022. Members were still working on the band's fifteenth album at the time of Rossington's death in 2023,[4] after which no original members remained in the band.

I was a year old when this concert happened but luckily my mother and my siblings introduced me to this among other great music from this era, before and after. My friends used to say my music tastes were weird but now they be listening to the same music I grew up listening to. I never really had just one genre of music, I had phases. 😂😂😂 But my music collection always had everything from the Beach Boys, Frankie Valen to the Doors and Led Zeppelin, to Queen and Kansas, to Rick Springfield and Richard Marx to DMX and Snoop Dogg to Marilyn Manson and Korn as well as everything in between each of those. Then you add in Celtic music, Native American, particularly native American flute music, and tejano music. I pretty much listen to everything including some classical music.
Such an amazing song. When this was released, I dont think I knew one person from ages 13 to 25 that as soon as we heard it claimed it to be played at our funerals. The 70s were the best, especially the music. Thanx so much, Peace
