I was at that concert, Bill Graham used to put on these concerts called Day On The Green. It was held at the Oakland Coliseum, were the Oakland Raiders & A's played their games. I still live in Oakland, but they don't hold those concerts anymore, unfortunately they were some of the best concerts ever. It cost $12.00 for a ticket on the out field grass. Lynyrd Skynyd was not the only band performing, you also got to see Santana, Peter Frampton and the Outlaws!

That must have been awesome. I was 7 so a bit too young. I did see their very first reunion show in Jax. Donnie did a great job on his first show. For Freebird, Donny didn't sing, he placed a hat like Ronnie wore on the mic stand while the band played. Up to the solos, all you saw was a spotlight on the hat. When the solo started you could see the whole band. All the still-living members were on stage.

What a privilege! I Did meet Ronnie in Kannapolis NC, when our band got bumped as the headliner. We were pissed, until we realized who the main act was. 😊 Then, caught the first reunion tour and realized why he was touring dives in NC! 😂
What I remember too about these great 70s concerts were that thousands of people would come together and jam. No shootings, to metal detectors, a scuffles when someone was a little too lit. But mostly all just enjoying the music, the sunshine, and the herb! Great vibes!

Allen Collins the one jamming,wearing white wrote that solo in high school. There wasn't a jukebox in america in the 70's, 80's, and 90's that didn't have this song on it.
Now you understand what Lynyrd Skynyrd is all about. This was a very powerful show.

This line-up didn't include Ed King or Bob Burns. They were replaced with Artemis Pyle on drums and Steve Gaines, the guitarist in the red pants with the goatee who replaced Ed. Artemis is the only member at this performance still alive.
Young man, YOU are the first to recognize the guitarist comes in at the end of the singers(Ronnie Van Zant) vocals to make it sound like he is finishing the lyric.

You hit the nail on the head when you said “that’s what brings people together - music”. We were all so much more together back then - black, white brown…all of us. The song started off even slower than the recorded version so it was long and drawn out. But all the kids knew what was coming. 😆
One of the greatest JAMS ever put forth. My closest experience to this was 9th grade seeing Molly Hatchet and during the last song (Flirtin with Disaster) they had 6 or 7 guitars out front jamming their asses off. Another great southern rock band.
During the part of Freebird where you said Gary Rossington's playing matched the singing of Ronnie Van Zant ... Gary Rossington's part could pretty much be described as being a vocal part played on a guitar. The two parts went hand in hand. -- I saw the original Skynyrd (this one) once and the reincarnation Skynyrd more times than I could guess. For many years they played almost yearly not all that far from me and I never missed their show. The original or the reincarnation, I was never disappointed in the least. Always tremendous.
Goosebump music brings everyone together. It brought a whole generation together making it the best time to be young. Everyone just enjoying the moment and music.

I was at this concert right down on the ball field, I was in the 11th grade. This is "Day On The Green". Oakland stadium! It was absolutely amazing and the best memories. Just think how Cool your grandparents where!!! We were cool!
their triple guitar attack was awesome! so sad that a short time later we would lose Cassie, Ronnie and Steve in the plane crash.

By the time of this concert, Artimus Pyle had replaced Bob Burns on drums and Steve Gaines was the third guitarist in place of Ed King.
Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines (white shirt, red pants) were lost in the plane crash along with Cassie Gaines (Steve's sister) who sang backup in the "Honkettes". Band is named after gym teacher that would get on them for having long hair, Leonard Skinner. Check out "Call Me The Breeze", "Saturday Night Special", "Sweet Home Alabama", and "Gimme Three Steps". Many more hits.
So many big festivals back in the day. In high school everyone listened to rock. There wasnt any other style. Live music was the deal and everyone you knew would be there.
I beg to differ. I was at this concert and 2 years later I was at Parliament funk fest in the same arena. I listened to Foghat just as much as I listened to the Commodores. I love Larry Graham "Graham Central station" just as much as I loved the Grateful Dead. We were definitely not limited to just rock. I graduated from high school in 1980, the music was a glorious banquet
Always gives me the creeps when Ronnie says If I leave here tomorrow would you remember me,. About 2/3 months after this show we would lose Ronnie, Steve Gaines (red pants), his sister Casey (backup singer), road manager and 2 pilots in a plane crash. 20 others survived but had serious injuries. They are all buried near each other in Jacksonville Florida. Even the teacher/coach who they got their name from. Leonard Skinner. 10 years after the crash, Gary Rossington reformed the band with Johnny Van Zant singing the lead. Billy Powell was a roadie and when group took a break he sat down and started playing the song, Ronnie heard him and said from now on your in the band.
I was only 12 when this concert was done . My oldest brother got his first car 1 week after the plane crash , and in that 1972 ford maverick , is where i was introduced to there music .
So skynyrd has been in my life for sometime now . Its my favorite southern rock band , i may be a little parcial , but its because they were raised 15 miles from where i was raised .. Us old time rockers knew that when you asked if most of their songs were at a slower pace like Freebird to that point, that you were about to experience how fast rocking they could be. Oh and always let the video play to the end you never know what you will miss. The camera pans the length showing how big the audience is and them wildly cheering this epic performance, the announcer pronounces the bands name clearly for you to hear, and some guys pass a joint while one of them looks around a bit nervously for cops or security. Been there done that many times. hehe

Two weeks after this show, band members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines all died in a plane crash and several members of the band were badly injured.
I saw this tour in Philadelphia Pa. like the week before, they were called the 3 guitar army they have an incredible history

SO Lucky to be there at age 14 with older brothers. Day on the Green, whore that T-shirt till it fell apart. Got to see KISS at San Francisco Cow Palace that same year. Fortunate to live in the bay area where so many big bands came to town.🎸🎶 Decades of recorded music, enjoy the exploration, rock on and rock hard. 😎🤘🏻

There is one band member on this stage who is still alive. The Drummer Artimus Pyle. He just recently released an LP as a tribute to the singer Ronnie Van Zant . The band is called APB . Artimus Pyle Band .

The first part of the song where the guitar is matching the vocals features Gary Rossington playing slide guitar on a Gibson SG. The guitarist in white is Alan Collins playing a Gibson Firebird. The third guitarist playing a Gibson Les Paul is Steve Gains. The bass player is Leon Wilkeson, and behind the drums is Artimus Pyle. 🎸🎸🎸✌🏼😎🇺🇸
Billy Powell on the piano was a concert trained pianist that was working as a roadie for the band until Ronnie (lead singer) heard him playing after a gig. They had no idea that Billy could play before that, Ronnie simply said; you're in the band.
The lead singer and leader of the band Ronnie VanZant, guitarist you noticed Gary Rossington, second guitarist in white Allen Collins and the original drummer Bob Burns all went to the same high school in Jacksonville Florida. Ronnie started putting a band together that became probably the greatest garage band in history. That's how bands used to be formed back then, guys getting together and practicing is someones garage.
This was part of the Day On The Green shows they had at the Oakland Coliseum. My girlfriend who became my wife would get free tickets through her work. They were all day concerts. All headliners.

Some of the BEST concert videos from the past were at the Oakland Colesium in 1977. Peter Frampton has one also - same year- same venue. Friken awesome. Things were so much freer then. I am also from the Bay Area so I especially dig this!!

What's crazy about this video is that they were opening up for the rolling stones and this video has probably been played more than anything the stones did at this show. Crazy world. Glad I've got a good seat.

Notice that old Budweiser can on Billie's Piano . Those old beer & soda cans weren't made from aluminum back then . They were steel and they had pull off tabs , not pop tops . You couldn't just crush a can with one hand unless you were pretty strong. Ronnie Van Zant was the lead singers Name . Gary Rossington was the guitarist who played slide guitar along with Ronnie's voice . The big solo at the end was the showman , Allen Collins ,doubled by Steve Gaines on the black guitar and Wilkeson just murdering it on on Bass ! This was a major historic performance .

It was fantastic! They couldn’t hold concerts of this size any longer. The people don’t know how to behave at a true rock concert now and there aren’t any bands left that can produce music at this level and remain true to rock and roll.
🎉 There was a group in the 70’s with the nickname, “Florida Guitar Army,” otherwise known as the Outlaws‼️ Try on some, “Green Grass and High Tides (1975). As if that wasn’t enough, Blue Oyster Cult has a few guitarists also…check out, “Don’t Fear the Reaper.” As if you didn’t know by now, the 70’s is where it’s at for guitar-centric rock. The drummer, Artimus Pyle, is still alive. The guitarist at the beginning, Gary Rossington, co-founded the band with the lead singer Ronnie Van Zandt. Two of the members in this concert, including the lead singer, were killed when their plane crashed.
Allen Collins was also a founding member. The other founding members were Bob Burns and Larry Junstrom.

I mentioned the genre "Southern Rock" on Simple Man. You notice the Confederate Flag? Some have called this the "Southern Anthem". Great music played by great musicians who would later become known as contributing their brand/style/image/ sound to Americana's 'historic' library of music. You'll find this genre very secretly seductive and hypnotizing, drawing you in more and more. There are many great Southern Rock Bands, Allman Brothers, ZZ Top, The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker, .38 Special and Molly Hatchet just name them off the top of my head. You are having a great time. This was just a few months before the plane crash. Yes all the founding members are up in heaven .
This was Southern rock. I saw them do this at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, NC in 1974. It was Under the Stars festival and featured a lineup of ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rare Earth, Leon Russell, Elvin Bishop, and Billy Preston. That was about 12 hours of my life I would not trade for anything! That said this was not a one off performance. This happens to be the best remastered video of them from that era. This song was a show finaly and was always over the top! The vocals sound better in the studio version as mics for live performances were not the same as today. You probably know a plane crash 3 months later killed key band members making this video the last of that era.
Try "Things Goin On" or "Gimme Three Steps" or "Gimme Back My Bullets". Southern rock at its all-time best.

The thing that makes THIS performance extra special, is that I believe, from what I've read, this was the last concert before the plane crash that killed some of the members of the band.

Bob Burns was not with Lynyrd Skynyrd when they were doing this Concert. The band members during this concert where as follows lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, on guitars you had Gary rossington Steve Gaines Allen Collins and Leon Wilson, piano was Billy Powell and on drums was artimus Pyle.In in the plant on the plane crash of 1977 October 20th the pilot and co-pilot were both killed road manager Dean kilpatrick was also killed and Ronnie Van Zant Steve Gaines and his older sister castle games with both killed in the crash.
The lead singer Ronnie Van Zant wrote this song after hearing one of the band’s members girlfriend asked him if I leave here tomorrow would you still remember me .
