This was about 46 years ago, most of those thousands of chicks are in their 70’s now and probably still rock out to Free bird. I will never forget the day the plane crashed. I was only 12yo 😢
I just turned 16 four days before.
The guitar solo is probably one of the most iconic and amazing guitar solos that has ever been recorded live.
TBF, it's a guitar trio though.
@@Tijuanabill, true but Allen Collins appears to take the lead here.
Allen plays most of the solo alone. You can here when Steve joins him on certain places. After the vocals are done and the solo is done, Gary switches to rather the test of the way. However, Leon almost has his own bass solo goin on😊
I'm 62 & this was my first concert! Still have the ticket!
Their bassist is the most 70s looking dude I've ever seen in my life lmao. Love it.
That would be Leon Wilkeson aka The Madhatter as he would change hats constantly throughout shows
@spike3082 He plays his fingers off in this one. About 2/3 of the way through, after they turned on the afterburners, Leon plucks those bass cables like they're angel-hair pasta-diameter, fast and clear and crisp as the song nears its end but hasn't slowed down in the least.
@@artbagley1406 you're absolutely right he truly is underrated and is truly a legend
Looks like he stepped out of a 70's biker exploitation film 😄
Keep in mind, this is 1977. Ear bud monitors didn't exist, they are playing in a huge open-air coliseum that is very loud. All he had was the monitor on the stage.
i agree this live version is so energic and wild with the people jumping all around the stadium, the basic record might be easier to ear and analyse the song notes
.. lol... I was 19 in 1977 ... mullet hairdos, halter tops, and hitchhikers ... all these good-looking girls rocking out are now in their 60's and 70's ... cypher on that one...
Grandma is that you!
@@jackskass8197 Would that need cyphering or goesintos? Ask Jethro Bodine about that.
They know howe to do it!
Lynryd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers are 100 PERCENT SOUTHERN ROCK!!!!!!!!!!
Marshall Tucker band ✊
The three best bands in American history. God Bless Southern Rock
She was right though. Southern Rock was essentially taking current Rock and backcrossing it again to all the traditional Southern Music from Blues to Gospel. She just picked out a little twang.
Lynryd Skynyrd, 38 Special, and Molly Hatchet all from my home town, Jacksonville Florida. Before cutting their first record, Skynryd played at my high school, Ed White High. They were revered as Southern rock gods in the deep south.
Lynard Skynard has one of the best songs in history..sweet home Alabama
October 19, 1977 they played their last concert in Greenville SC, I'm lucky to have been there for that show, their plane crashed the next evening on the way to Baton Rouge La. The lead singer & one of the lead guitar players and his sister, who was one of the back up singer, and their road manager were killed in the crash, and both pilots also died, all total 6 people died. 20 lived.
It's amazing anyone survived that!
And later, Rossington and Collins had a great band! Still have all my albums!
And one of the longest songs ever recorded at 9 minutes! RIP Ronnie Van zant!! Long live Skynyrd!
Lynyrd Skynyrd...my favorite and The Greatest American Rock Band in History...!
Mine too and from the beginning.
Greatest American Band EVER.
One of the greatest rock bands ever. Three months after this concert there plane crashed killing some of the members.
😱😳omg!!!! I am so sorry 😢
THis performance of this briiliant song brings me to tears every time. I think it's because it is such a amazing celebration of life and the spirit of rock and roll music. If you could capture the energy in that stadium and bottle it, you could power a large city for a hundred years.
One of the things that made Lynyrd Skynyrd so unique was their 4 lead guitarists on this song. One may have been a bassist, but the other 3 were sharing lead.
3 lead guitars and a bass
I'm 61 and they were the first band I ever saw in concert! They were absolutely amazing, just made people feel so good with their lyrics and instruments. Ronnie Van Zant was the greatest songwriter ever, and now his baby brother has been singing for the band for 30+ yrs, and does a phenomenal job! Big brother has to be proud of him for letting the next two generations in on those brilliant songs! Try out Simple Man, you'll love it as well❤
Tuesday's Gone" and "Simple Man" are my recommendations from Skynyrd.
YES!!
@@jimroe1316 I love Curtis Lowe and Down South Jukin
@@shabbymaverick7975 Me too!! My wife and I used to Curtis Lowe while riding our Harley
In the film 'Forest Gump' two of the band's songs are used in the soundtrack. "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" which is a very strong scene in the film.
The crowd knows what's coming. Grandma got a sunburn that day.
Gary Rossington played the slide guitar part (birds chirping) as a tribute to Duane Allman.
This is the greatest closing song ever. Wish I had been there, but I was only fifteen and it's a long walk from Texas to Oakland.
They would play a 2 hour show then do a 15-20 minute encore of Freebird It was always thier encore song..
That was an awesome concert. July '77. I think the most fav I ever went to. Next song, Sweet Home ALABAMA!
Think I remember you. Sold you 3 grams of Blond Lebanese Hash,$10.00 a g!
I was there.
i have discovered this song last year, in a local concert where i live, played by young musicians, and it's was mindblowing that duo-solo that goes crescendo it's just pure madness, and it's my phone ring since then
This was before the singers had the ear pieces so they could hear themself sing. Notice towards the end when he was singing. It was so loud that he had to look over at the guitar player next to him to stay in tune. The solo has four guitars, one piano and a drummer. The drummer and the piano were both banging it out as loud as they could. It is also neat that the piano was not in the band. He was a "roadie". He would travel with the band and put up all the equpment. They found out he was a classical paino player and dicided to put him in the band.
I used to listen to that in the Doune Castle Glasgow every weekend 40 years ago outstanding ...
Lynyrd Skynyrd greatest rock band ever, from Green Cove Springs Florida
I was at this event… This was an amazing moment in music for me… Fly High Freebird
I love how this song starts out as a melancholy break-up song and then those guitars FLY FREE!
One of the best Rock songs ever!
This was a great show, it was my first concert. The lineup, in order of appearance, The Outlaws, Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Peter Frampton.
Songs from the bands on that day:
Outlaws; There Goes Another Love Song, Green Grass and High Tides, Ghost Riders in the Sky
Santana; Black Magic Woman, Oye Como Va.
Lynyrd Skynyrd; Sweet Home Alabama, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, The Ballad of Curtis Lowe
Peter Frampton; Do You Feel
10 years later, in Sep 1987, I saw Skynyrd at Shoreline Amphitheater. It was the 4th show of the tour, Carlos Santana walked on stage and played with them for a bit.
This band, along w/ 38 Special & others,. define the southern rock genre.
My babysitter was at this show. She went to a lot of the "Day on the Green" concerts. She also saw Zeppelin, Eagles, Heart, Fleetwood Mac. My first Day on the Green was The Who in '82.
My favorite version, this is. It was 'At the Green', One of a series of outdoor concerts held in Oakland back in '77. It had Santana and Peter Frampton as well I think, maybe the Outlaws? Frampton was huge back then and most the girls were probably there to see him.
Billy Powell on the piano. He was a roadie for the band that wrote an intro to Free Bird in his spare time, played it for the band and was invited to join the group! Love that!
Cheers.
@@spells1389 Collins wrote the guitar solo in high school. He brought it to Ronnie and told him the story of his girlfriend and him getting into an argument and she said to him the first verse,, "if I left you tomorrow, would you still remember mw?". Ronnie wrote the other verses in like 20 minutes. Gary came up with the slide to go with the verses. It was a band effort to make it the complete masterpiece it is!
That slide guitar melody gets you right in the guts.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was the epitome of Southern rock.
I have seen them 12 times!!👁️ 🤟🎉❤🤘
I think most people probably expect "Simple Man" to be next from this band. A very well-known song.
I love thath young peaupil still love this music!!......
You should check out their live performances of Workin' For MCA and Gimme Three Steps from the Knebworth Music Festival in 1976. Ronnie Van Zant (vocalist) was one of the most underrated songwriters of all time. Great reaction. 🙏✌️
The Stones didn't want to go on stage after that profomanance. Ronnie made them mad when he put his boys out on the tounge that was for the Stones.
Also from that Knebworth show was a really mean "T For Texas"
@@guyray1504 you got that right lol
Great selection, next selection "Simple Man" another great song and reaction. Also "Sweet Home Alabama".
Collins, rossington, gaines, king, wilkinson, van zandt, powell, rip great skynyrd, only artymus is alive
Tusedays Gone is a must
They're my favorite band of all time.
😉😉😉😉🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍👍👍
The first time granny flashed her goodies was at this performance.
This style of music is called southern rock. It's kind of a mixture of rock, country and the blues. Great reaction!!!
Noticed you mentioned the red backs. I was at this show but was smart enough to sit in the shade in the press box all day. You should have seen those backs 3 hours later after Peter Frampton was done. Lord!
Oh yeah, this is the right way! 😉
I was at this Day on the Green...awesome concert
You should check out a song called Every Mothers Son by Lynyrd Skynyrd. It is a tune known mostly by hard core Skynyrd fans . Every one I've turned on to that song has added it to their playlist.
Same goes for The Ballad of Curtis Loew
Tuesday's Gone is my favorite sing by this band. I think you'll love it too.
This,, my friend, is pure rock and roll from my time
Thousands of babies were made that day.
😎😁👍😉
A masterpiece.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was once of the best and you look very lovely
Billy Powell was a roadie for the band who got promoted when they found out he was a trained pianist.
Call me Mr Breeze is another great song from the band
Freebird....BEST song EVER!!!
The greatest rock and roll song ever
The biggest hit from them was "Sweet Home Alabama". "Gimme three Steps" and "The Breeze" are also really good.
Im 78 and remember this like it was yesterday. They blew the Stones right off the stage. Years later- ive seen this band three more times. Never gets old. Only 2 left now- Ricky Medlock, & Artemis Pyle
This was Oakland...1977...the Stones weren't at this concert...
@@markleedham6114This was 76 at Winter Park. 😂
@chopperchopper1418 actually this was in fact Billy Graham's The Day on The Green festival in Oakland 1977
Lynyrd Skynyrd, .38 Special, The Outlaws, The Marshall Tucker Band, Molly Hatchet, The Allman Brothers Band
Z.Z Top, Wet Willie, Point Blank, all of them are my favorite southern rock groups. I’m still listening today.
You all in the crowd completed the experience.
Iconic song. ✌
Surprise Emma 😂😂❤
Epic, best rock song ever
The birds are the natural harmonics on the guitar strings, without touching the strings all the way to the frets. They only exist in a few places, unlike the frets. It's a great showboat move.
Allen Collins the guitar player in all white with long hair had the solo written note for note since high school when he was only 16 years old 😮
Other songs you may really like: Simple Man, Sweet Home Alabama, Tuesday's Gone with the Wind, Gimme Three Steps 👍😁
Just a few months before the plane crash that took the lead singer and several other band members and crew. The band later reformed but they were never as good as they were here. All the best Lynyrd Skynyrd songs came before the crash.
Omg!!!! 😱 it’s so sad!! 😞
This concert was at the Oakland Coliseum. , it was a concert series call “ Day on the Green”. I believe the next band to play that day was Peter Frampton band.
I probably went to over a 1/2 dozen of those all day concerts as a young goofy knucklehead teenager. 😂
Frampton Oakland 77. This concert was 76 at Winter Park San Francisco. 😅
I went to a bunch of concerts at Winter Land back then
Never saw Frampton
I was there
southern rock! their song "Simple Man" worth a listen
Who's the woman who inspired these guys to write a song like this? Damn.. Wild tune, love it 😎👍
The opening line was actually a question that Allen Collin's wife ask him ( Allen was a founding member and guitarist with Skynyrd.)
@@richardpierce7819 Legend mate. I didn't know that 👍
Who ever had the mind set to film this ,❤ ya
One of the greatest instrumentals
Great reaction to a great performance.
The Ballad of Curtis Loew.
Simple man is another amazing song from this guys… the confederates flag in a hippie concert…the world used to be a better place back then
Lead singer was one of the 4 killed in the plane crash just a few months later.
The little tweets from the slide guitar were a tribute to Duane Allman from the Allman Brothers Band who died.
Outstanding observations. Very sweet.
You should check out their live version of Call me the breeze. Also try out That Smell. The way they weave the guitars between each other is outstanding.
NEVER neglect the studio version......
The live version from One More From the Road...just sayin'.
Yes we still remember you Ronnie...
FREEBIRD!!!
…..just to point out that was the last leg of that tour and his voice wasn’t 100 %. Great reaction ❤️
The song Free Bird was written by Allen Collins and lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. It was inspired when Allen had a fight with his GF Kathy. She asked him if he would remember her if she left.
Triple guitar!!!🎸🎸🎸🤘
Awesome!!
Speechless 🤷
Dolly parton just covered this with lynyrd skynyrd playing on it we now get a woman's point of view on the song
Simple man is a good song By them
Imagine being the band that had to follow this.
I seen this tour at the end of June in Philadelphia it was my second time then they had the plane crash in October, they have and amazing story they were turned down by every label company it took Al Kooper the keyboard player from Blood Sweat and Tears who got backing from Frank Zappa to come up with the label Songs of the South I've seen them ten times after losing Ronnie VanZant Steve Gaines and his sister back up singer Cassie Gaines along with road manager Fitzpatrick and both pilots R.I.P.
You stopped at the best part. Sacrilegious!!!
Call Me the Breeze!
*Lynyrd Skynyrd (Simple Man)*
Pianist Billy Powell was originally trained as a classical pianist
Emma has the prettiest eyes, ever! My oh my, her boyfriend must be mesmerized by them. Mmmm Mmmm Yum Yum. Dark pools of intrigue and mystery, they are.
In the 70s I was a kid and loved this song. I would turn it off after the last word was sung because I thought the fast music at the end didn’t gel with the general mood of the song.
The drummer is the only one still alive, and the majority of the audience are 60 years old plus
If you love Freebird. Play a beautiful song by Curtis Lowe. Great song.
Also, you should review the movie about their story and the plane crash... Street Survivors: The True Story of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash (2020)
One of my favorites is their rendition of "Call Me The Breeze". Personally, I prefer the studio version for this one.
You should listen to Tuesday's Gone.
